    Beautiful work, Sigurdur - that bowl is great. Nice video work too - most woodturners don’t get close enough to the cutting action.

    Wow! Another beautiful piece! Your skew and spindle gouge skills are awesome!! What is the hollowing tool with the small carbide cutter and where did you get it. It looks perfect for what I need. I’m going to try something along these lines tomorrow. I’m recovering from back surgery and just now starting to get back to my lathe! You have inspired me!!

      Thanks so much for the information! I turned something similar yesterday. My base and top turned out really good but I didn’t do well on the finial but I’m going to practice those today. I’m going to make some ahead of time to have ready for future projects and get in some good practice. I only hope I can be as skilled as you are with the skew and detail gouge!! Keep making shavings my friend!

      Hi David. Yes, you are right. I should not blame it on the tool. Thanks for watching. Appreciated.

    Very lovely and well proportioned piece! Nice work. May I ask why you chose Hampshire Sheen for parts and microcrystalline wax for others?

    • @SAr-Woodturning
      @SAr-Woodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words and for watching. Appreciated. Reg. my use of waxes. This was while back, but I think my reasoning was as follows. Microcrystalline wax is supposed to be better on pieces that are handled often. Not as prone to show fingerprints etc. I believe that is why I used it on the Finial. But I was probably just experimenting with the waxes. There is not really any reason no to use Microcrystalline wax on all of the piece.

      @@SAr-Woodturning thank you. That is helpful. I use Hampshire sheen quite often but haven’t tried the microcrystalline wax

    What do you find to be the benefit to roughing out a blank with a skew when spindle-turning? I watch another guy do the same thing, but I just can't wrap my head around why it would be more beneficial to do it that way. Better finish in your opinion or just preference? I use my roughing gouge to the point of it being true and then I'll hit it with my skew to make it look pretty. I guess starting with the skew just yields faster results? Amazing piece my friend, I like it quite a bit.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.
      I tend to use the same approach as you describe. Especially if the item I am turning starts out with a very rough, uneven surface. But sometimes I use the skew for roughing out. Mostly for practice like in this case. I don’t use the skew much and I feel I need all the practice I can get.

      @@SAr-Woodturning You know, there's a hell of a video that I watched not too long ago and I'm gonna find it for you. It worked wonders for me when it comes to the skew and perhaps it could help you as well.
