Thank you for your kind remarks. "86 years young". Impressive, but as long as you are interested in learning new skills you stay young in heart and mind. I find that rule no. one in learning woodturning is to always start the cut with the bevel rubbing on the wood. Then rotate or lower the gouge until you see a fine shaving forming at the edge of the gouge. As long as you have the bevel in contact with the wood you have control. After a while, this becomes second nature. Best of luck with your turning.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated. I tend to use the same approach as you describe. Especially if the item I am turning starts out with a very rough, uneven surface. But sometimes I use the skew for roughing out. Mostly for practice like in this case. I don’t use the skew much and I feel I need all the practice I can get.

Yes, it can be frustrating to loose a piece when almost finished but that is one of the exciting things about turning wood. You never know what you get in the end.

Hi. I have Thread Chasers from Hamlet Crafttools, England. Size of thread 18 tpi. (tooth pr. Inch) and from Carter and Son Toolworks, USA. Size, 16 tpi. 16 tpi are easier to use since the teeth are bigger. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.
