Making A Star Finial Box out of Redheart and Maple Wood - Woodturning Project

  • This wood turning project is more complicated than any other I've done a video for. It's pretty long, but I talk through a couple of my processes - laying out the design on the blank, how I'm ebonizing, and a couple other things. I'm still working on getting some decent commentary in my videos, as many have requested. It has proven to be more difficult than I anticipated. I included quite a few subtitle comments throughout the process since I didn't talk through any of the turning - I hope that helps for those who want commentary. The tools I use are a variety of bowl gouges, a spindle gouge, skews, and a round nose bowl scraper. The order that I do some of the processes may seem strange, but there are four pieces, three points where pieces have to fit together, and I can't dry fit two of them until they are completely finished... Luckily, it worked out okay! I hope it's not too hard to follow. Let me know if you have any questions.
    My Etsy and social media links are below. If you're interested in purchasing this piece, message me. Thanks so much to everyone who has subscribed! Please check out my other videos too!

    Beautiful little box! I like the contrasting colors of wood too. The large finial just works with the squatty little body of the box itself, its great!!
    Thank you!

    If you can handle that geometry like you did, I am confident you'll do great with the commentary! Thanks for demonstrating ebonizing, very stylish piece!

    Hey Chad, like you I had reservations regarding the size of the finial. I thought proportion wasn't quite right. But once it came together my concern was put to rest. I'm a big fan of your work Chad. Another signature piece.

    Chad, great video again! Love this channel. Can you make a quick video on how to use diamond cards to sharpen the bowl gouge or other lathe tools? The grinder takes off too much material. It’s a waste. Diamond wheels are too expensive, but diamond cards/paddles are cheap.
    Just a thought. Great work.

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great suggestion... I'll add it to the Tips & Tricks video I've been planning. However, there is no replacement for a grinder for sharpening. The diamond cards can get you several more cuts before going back to the grinder, but they can only do so much. Practice grinding with cheap tools, so you're not ruining high quality steel. And I know they are pricey, but I love my CBN wheel... it'll save you money on wheels and tool steel in the long run. Thanks!

      Just passing on something I discovered today. Instead of drawing a star just measure the diameter of the piece. Halve it, set your compass to that measurement then place the compass point anywhere on the circumference of the piece and walk it round, marking as you go. You should end up where you started and have six points ready to draw the ellipse.

      I never thought about doing it that way, but it makes sense. Ever notice how 6 equal circles (like dowels) can be arranged so a 7th equal circle fits right in the middle? If not, try it with 7 little dowels. I've always noticed that, but never figured out a way to make that knowledge useful... Thanks for the info!

    Great project Chad . Loved the use of the rubber band ! Is that a brass broomhead which you were using to clean the sandpaper ? Also liked the the way you just used the sander to form the shape . 👍

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, Jim! The broom head is actually just a natural bristle deck brush. I also use one to clean the funk off my tools real quick while turning. Epoxy a few neodymium magnets to the back and stick it anywhere on your lathe. Thanks for watching!

    Honestly, Chad, the video is a straight six. Your detailed drawings on the wood at the beginning, where are they? Turned down. The road to Star Form, where is it? So I can't understand all this, it's not at all clear how you do what comes out of it. Weak, annoying, way too long video, thumbs down, you can do better.

    • @ChadEamesWoodWorks
      @ChadEamesWoodWorks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you’re probably right, I CAN do better but I won’t. Haha. I’m a woodturner first and that’s where my focus stays. My videos took a number of forms as I made more of them - some short, some long, some with explanation, some without, etc. Different people like different things so you have to experiment a bit. Is this one too long? Yep. Is it a little confusing in the beginning? Yep. Were there a TON of takes that had to be sorted through and pieced together to salvage parts of it? Yep. Was there any chance that I would have considered reshooting it? Nope. My videos get shorter and contain less explanation after this one… lessons learned. Your feedback is valid and I promise that I’m a harsher critic than you, but the alternative would have been no video at all. That’s why I haven’t put out a video in nearly a year - I’ve been too busy turning. Still trying to figure out a way to make it all work. Thanks for watching.
