The problem here is that the tuners have a big shot of grease in them, an oil will just dilute the grease. And if that grease has gunk in it . Welll…… I use a ptfe type grease , take tuners off completely, hand use a hypodermic needle. I fill it till the old shoots out. Usually do this before install. And then it’s done, no room for dirt inside the tuner. Lubed for life. And ohhh so smooth. Just my thoughts
Great info. I mix 3 in 1 Oil + Vaseline + Graphite-pencil dust (into a paste) - works phenomenal. (also) for super tight spaces: Stew mac - Tri-Flow Pin Point Lubricator. oNe LovE from NYC
3-in-one is not for guitar tuners. the gears inside the case need something that will not thicken over time. A better choice is a Teflon grease in a container with a sharp tip, even if you prefer to use a broomstraw or toothpick to put the lube in the case. also the tuner shaft enters the case and that should be very light;y lubed since it is a friction point.
After a bit of research I was led to believe the way to lubricate Kluson tuners / machine heads was to use white lithium grease fed in using a syringe ? WD-40 do such a product in a spray can with an attached nozzle for getting in small areas, UK price £6.50 for 250 ml, this amount should last the life of a guitar ?
did it work? how often do you do this? I'm thinking you might be using the wrong type of lubrication. That oil might penetrate the wood, something you do not want. It can do harm if it does penetrate the wood, it can cause the wood to swell, and the finish may start lifting off. You can use lighter fluid as a cleaning solvent. Looks like you might need some. th-cam.com/video/AkeS8HDzCH0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=a_Ky_BMdU1IadGnP

Nice bit of info Doug. I believe Teflon grease and White Lithium grease are one of the same. Many thanks.
3 in 1 professional white lithium is perfect. (3 in 1 is just a breand.)
I like the toothpick method you used to get a smaller amount in the tiny holes. Hopefully the oil you put in there will loosen them up.
How in gods name do you tighten these damn things. Mine are loose.
Take then off and tighten up the main screw, if your are the same. But don't over do it

Nah, WD-40 isn't a lubricant, much more a cleaner and anti rust type thing.
@@tallthinkev WD-40 is a brand name, they do a variety of products, one being not just a cleaner but white lithium grease too.
So once this type of tuner is sealed with a cover, one cannot pop it off and put it back on without breaking it? I am doing fine too, tallthinkev.
These can be 'popped off' however there is a risk of braking the lugs that hold them together.
How often I need oiling the Machine head?
Some will never need it, however if it's been a very dry or dusty place...

Me I'd take off the tuners and squirt it everywhere 😆
Can I use all purpose oil?
3 in 1 is all purpose oil
All-purpose oil is not for all purposes. You don't want to use it in the kitchen, or in the bedroom.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
