I tried this. One of the Schallers on my Rickenbacker was a bit stiff, so I got some lithium grease from Halfords and it improved the turning, but then found that there was major play - I had to turn the knob one whole turn between tuning up and down. So I emailed Schaller in Germany, telling them what I had done and what happened. They asked for a photograph, and then straight away said they will send me a complete set of brand new replacements, without a receipt, for a guitar that is three years old. Now THAT is customer service! Grover have a lifetime warranty as well, so that's worth checking. I didn't know about Schaller so I'm super happy that I'm getting a new set. Thanks Schaller!
The guys at JHS who distribute the Grovers I purchased would not replace them without the original packaging. Grovers that we purchase in the UK are made by a factory in china licensed by Grover for distribution in the UK. So basically they are fake Grovers in my book. Schaller have not sold out, they are a great company.
I take off tuner 'buttons' by removing the screw that holds each one on the shaft. A black 'split'' washer and then a white nylon washer next to the tuner body can be removed for cleaning and light lubrication with light grease (gun grease). The gearing inside is not accessible since the rear of the case is sealed with a round plate. But if the shaft is jiggled and pushed ... the geared shaft starts to emerge from the case. Lubricant/cleaner can be just touched on the end of the gearing (like fishing reel grease) and then reassemble. Cleaning and light lube of the button on the shaft helps a lot and any small rough places can be removed with a fine diamond nail file (like Revlon in the USA) so the surfaces are smooth and free of burrs. Quality tuners (Grover, even Wilkinson and better) do not need much help, but China ones are sticky and really need improvement. The screws that hold the 'buttons' on are just barely snugged to hold on the buttons. the hex nuts on the front of the headstock face can be snugged very lightly and the inside of each one is where the rotating shaft glides.... very lightly wipe grease on the tuner shaft. Be sure to replace the metal and nylon washers just as installed... not backwards!
Happy New Year! I LOVED THIS! You have no idea how grateful I am to read this. I've just purchased a new guitar that came with the worst tuners on the face of the earth. Good thing I'm a MacGyver. I've been destroying and rebuilding things better since the days when my parents had no clue I had a complete workstation at the back of my closet. I had already taken the tuner apart only to find a classical guitar type open tuner hidden inside a locked chamber. Your fix is what I was missing. I had lubricated all, but those tiny washers. THIS IS THE FIX. I can hear a choir of angels as I type. I'm all in! Subscribed and all. Thank you!
Funny, that's the same thing I did with the Grovers on my SG - except I used machine oil instead of grease. It goes into the tuner easier. I've never figured out when to use grease and when to use oil, but since there really isn't much stress on the gear in the tuner, I really don't think it matters.
They are probably packed with grease hence why you should only use grease, I suppose if your only doing the washers a litteral drop of oil isn't going to sink into the actual machine head, but still if oil gets to grease, weird things stsrt to happen
The real problem is that tuners with separate buttons are designed with a flat on the shaft that drives the worm gear that engages with a corresponding flat on the side of the hole through the button. This stops the button from just spinning on the shaft and keys it so the shaft turns when you twist the button. If the tolerances on the shaft and hole were very tight the two would mate tightly and there would be little to no play. Unfortunately tolerances on most tuner shafts and buttons are quite wide and there is often a lot of play. It is a poor design and tightening the end screw doesn't really solve this, it just makes it less obvious. This is a problem the old Kluson tuners don't have because the buttons are pressed onto the shafts.
`I took all tuners off and too k them all apart and cleaned them real good with tooth brush. Put them back with a little dab of white grease and retuned with no problem at all. Excelllent.
Thanks for the great idea! Now I will call the tuners notchy due to lack or better words and description. Do you think break slider pin grease will work?
i have no problem with grover tuners but wonder why the hint on u-tube talks about epiphone tuners which, on my masterbuilt are stiffer than a pastors face while passing the pub
Interesting.. late to comment I have brand new les paul studio with sketchy Grover tuners. Coincidence.. I have also, a epiphone which I replaced the factory locking tuners for Grovers and have no issue. I will try this on the Les paul. Although.. I found the tuning issue to actually be with the bridge. I used a little 3 in 1 oil on each saddle and seems to have fixed the issue. Will try this for the notchyness.
I was going to get some Grover locking tuners cause of this issue. But I was able to fix the problem with my Grover 3x3 205 tuners on my Dean VX. But this worked well thanks for the tip. And the end of the tuner that u turn is called Button yes u can replace them . Keep up awesome work rock on an stay safe .
can this be done with the strings still on? i just slapped some new strings on mine and really should've remembered to do this before. don't want to waste a set.
Found this video as I’m looking for help on my Les Paul. Gigged Friday night with it and only noticed that part of the tuner has dropped (the black circular part on the tuner, my guess it’s slipped when the string broke) ? Is this an easy fix ?
I have grovers on one of my les Pauls and I have the same issue....probably because I live in Arizona and its very dry....very, very, very dry,. Gonna do this right away, so that I will be pleased as punch as well. Cheerio
That "fix" is only temporary and not address the REAL problem, which is gear lash inside the machine. You need to open the tuner up and put grease on the gears inside.
No, the actual problem was not the gear, it was the connection f the button to the shaft being a poor fit. But your explanation is perfectly feasible in most cases :)
I've got a 95 Washburn dime333 and my tuners ar so lose you barely even touch them and they move should i tighten those screws also they are very smooth not notchy at all thanks

I know of 2 things that are light grease that is never sticky: fishing reel grease (clear white and very light) and a reddish light grease for handguns. Both are in a small tube with a tiny hole to squeeze out a tiny bit. I'd like yo know how to lube inside the tuner body and about that small part that will push out some when you press on the shaft end after the button is removed.

SuperLube is a food-safe, silicone-based white grease with PTFE. I bet it is similar to what you used. It also is a great in the nut grooves and saddle/bridge where the strings tend to bind during tune-up and tremolo/bends. You can use a toothpick to apply it. TK, you CAN get to the inside of those fully closed tuners. BTW, when you do, just like in the "Wizard of Oz," when Toto pulled back the curtain, you'll find nothing to fear. There is a very simple assembly, as opposed to anything too crazy to work with. Lubricate it all very lightly once inside. There is absolutely no need to spend more $$$ on tuners. How you open it is with the sharp blade of an exacto knife 🔪 taking care that you don't injure yourself. Run the blade around where the casing connects, loosen up the adhesive that holds it together, and gently; carefully pry it open. You can also use a tool I fashioned for this kind of stuff. I got a few pairs of jewelry and sewing machine pliers (cheap). I used felts from my cymbals. They're thick, so I slice about 2-5mm right down the center and crazy glue them to the insides of pliers, creating what I call 'soft pliers', which I use to grip things without hurting them.
DB I take cod liver oil tablets every morning with a cold drink and I've not had a cold for years. Eat less dairy as well. That concludes today's health tip. You're welcome.
PTFE (aka Teflon) is almost good on any musical instruments in context of lubricating. Due to its non-reactive, self-lubricating, low coefficients of friction and hydrophobic properties. PTFE is so inert that it almost can be applied on any kind of surface without attacking the substrate ever (under normal musical instruments playing conditions). I used to deal in PTFE products in the past.
No I dont think so, however tuning pegs can get damaged around the post hole but with plenty of windings it should be fine. If you have locking tuners always keep an eye on this.
How well do you think powdered graphite would work? I keep a tube to sprinkle on my bridge saddles and nut when changing strings. I'm having the same problem with stiff Grover tuners on my new Les Paul.

It will last 6-12 months in my experience before the grease dries out and stiffens up, but if you’re in a humid climate much longer.
That screw is to adjust the tension on all tuners it should not be tightened to the max unless you want that stiffness.
Just trying to help and inform

How well do you think powdered graphite would work? I keep a tube to sprinkle on my bridge saddles and nut when changing strings. I'm having the same problem with stiff Grover tuners on my new Les Paul.
dont know, try it and let me know.
Would WD 40 work?
I don't recommend it.
By grease do you mean cooking spray? Or bacon grease? Or grease off your head or what? Must have a single meaning in Britain.
