Actually changed the strings on my Squier CV 50s Tele with vintage tuners from 10th to 11th in a few minutes and it worked beautifully! Thank you for sharing! Cheers Kurt
This is the video I needed. Just got a new guitar with this style pegs and I had no idea how to use them properly. In 36 years of guitar, never had them before.
Wow, I can not believe I've had vintage tunners for this long and did not know this, so simple and easy, thanks so much for the tip !!!! Great video!!!
Thanks Rich, I just got a Jazmaster 62 reissue with slotted tuners, and I have never use them before, I was totally doing it wrong! So simple, but you don't know what you don't know! Thanks again, cheers!
You can also use it like a regular tuner with an over and under wrap. first half wrap over the string then wind under the string which squeezes on the string with no crossover of wraps.
I am going to try this on my man newly acquired Strat. I like this method better than the "two and a half tuning pegs" as there's no guessing when you come to the B and high E strings.
I wish I’d have seen this earlier today. Just got an old strat and hadn’t dealt with those tuners….snapped off a high E Superslinky when I was tuning it up. I’m used to my Grover’s. Very helpful video…glad I bought 4 sets of strings the other day! Thanks, man!
At 2:44 please note exactly how he is applying pressure and pulling back on the string as he applies the tension by turning the pegs. Man oh man - this is SO important. If you do not do it this way the dang string will pop out which really gets old
You don’t have to back the string up two frets 😃 you just clip it off two tuning posts up. Easier and less chance of a measuring error. You can back up the B and E strings if you like, but by then you’ll have an excellent idea where to cut them.
These tuners are such a pain in the butt though, I bought a new strat this week and it is the first time I encountered this type of tuner. I get it if the guitar is actually vintage but there are obviously far easier and better solutions available today
How in the hell do you do the winding at 2:40 everytime I do it my string just goes outward and the wraps stick to the bottom of the tuning peg I hate restringing so f*****g much
What I first do (and I guess I should have showed this in the video) is after putting the string in the tuner post, I bend the string over the slot so it won't pop out while winding. After that, when I start winding, I pull on the string purposely to give it tension so it slides up the tuner post while winding (you can see me doing this in the video), otherwise I would have the same problem you're having now where the string would "flop out" and just stay at the bottom and not wrap around the post correctly.
It’s a ok method, there is a much better method is to “lock” the strings...there are some video that explain that using both vintage and modern tuners.
I fucking hate vintage tuners man. I followed this exact steps and the bloody high e string will not stop popping out. Why are these fucking tuners still a thing? I’m about to throw this damn guitar out the window
I will not buy a Fender that doesn’t have this type of tuner. Unfortunately, they are not using them as much on the newer models. The American Performer series is underrated.

Same, ive had my fender since 2006 and it was trial and error till i watched this lol
This is great! At last , an end to the frustration changing strings on the safety post tuners. THANK YOU!

Excellent tip! First time I've seen that and so much easier than measuring against the tuner pegs.
That's cool. Thanks for the tip. I've been playing for years and never knew this. Thanks a million my friend.
Thanks. I have a Tele for the first time in 45 years. I guessed before. Want to switch back to these slotted tuners.
Perfect tip. Thank you so much

Good idea Rich, I’ll try this out next time
Juding by your profile picture, I’d say you have amazing music taste. How To Disappear Completely is the best song ever recorded
thank you, been playing for decades but never used tuning posts like this and couldn't understand why the strings were slipping out.

You saved me a lot of time. Great instructions! Very concise. I appreciate that very much! Thanks.
Rich, thank you for this!
The one dislike is from the guy who still couldn’t figure it out after watching this video
What are you talking about I didn't dislike the video.
thanks rich this will make changing strings fun instead of having to worry thanks again!
Perfect! Thanks - after all these years….

Thank you, took me about like 25 minutes to restring my guitar :)
Or just pull the sting up 2 x tuning pegs and cut, works just the same
Yes,you're correct ! The distance between 2 tuning pegs is about the same as the distance from the nut to the second fret.
Thank you!!
I like this idea! Thanks for showing us this...saves guessing the last two strings LOL
Excellent tip, thank you.
Thanks for your input on my video which led me here.

Take your time, they really are a piece of piss to use, I never have any issues with tuning 👍🎸
Rich I know you like using 8's... Do you tune down or play in standard tuning?
Who knew? You! Thank You 🤙
I feel silly now. Thank you sir.
You saved me! lol
I would do three frets.
didn’t work my E string won’t stop ringing I made sure it was exactly the same too bruh
I go 3 frets instead of 2.

@@rmenga while pushing with the index you are pulling it with the middle and ring finger, is that correct?

Toothpick. Straight into hole, after string is in.
They are fantastic tuners. I prefer them over all the rest. Even locking tuners. When you wrap the string YOU GOTTA ADD PRESSURE.
you cut the string too short
I will not buy a Fender that doesn’t have this type of tuner. Unfortunately, they are not using them as much on the newer models. The American Performer series is underrated.
Lol. Man if you’re that frustrated maybe throw your brain out the window. It’s not working.
Man, I hate this type of tuning system... Especially the thinner strings have the tendency to jump out as you're coiling them.
Vintage tuners are the best. If they slip out it’s because you’re not adding pressure to the string as you wrap it.
