How To Fix Loose Gibson Deluxe Tuners. Best way to do it!

  • I had a 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio that had loose tuners. I tried to find a decent tutorial on how to fix them and the videos I found were bad advice and would cause damage to them. I found a way to do it that seems to work pretty well aside from replacing them. Hope this fix works for you too! Please leave a comment if it did!

Thanks man! I’m currently restoring my 1992 Epphone Les Paul and used to be “that guy” who would replace pieces of hardware with new parts. It worked and you saved me another 60$ just by giving the worn out tuners a few blows with a hammer and screwdriver! LOL…
    Great tip!

Very cool tip! Mine only have one tab, whereas these have two. I didn't have the right size screwdriver, so I skipped the tapping...but I'd imagine it would still work with just one? I didn't have the seperation like his had either, but my g string was slipping out of tune a lot and the tuner was really loose. I did notice that torquing down on the nut that goes on the face of the headstock did help to tighten the tuning peg enough that I'm hoping it will stay in tune at least for a bit. Next string change, (or if it's still slipping out) I'll do the screwdriver trick. I want new sperzels, but damn they are pricey these days!!

You might have to solder that cover on if you lose that tab. I think what’s good about that type of tuner is you can take them apart and finagle them and get them tight again.

The Gibson Deluxe tuners are horrible and should be replaced if you want good tuners.

News flash tuners don’t keep strings in tune . Lubed properly cut nut slits do

Dude, if the tuner housing loosens up like on the newer Gibson deluxe tuners, then it’s not going to stay in tune, lubed and properly cut nut or not. With this design, you have a weak staked tab that keeps the cover in place, which keeps the worm gear in place.

Not talking about loose tuners though . If they are not loose they work perfectly fine

Gibson Deluxe tuners made by Ping. Cheap hardware on Gibson Standards. Come on, man! Fix it, Mark!

Not true, the ones in the video has "made in germany" stamped on them, so made by Schaller.
I have a set that came on a Gibson Flying V that are stamped "Made in Japan", so they are made by Gotoh. The "Kluson style" tuners are a flawed design, never very good, and go bad easily whomever they are made by.
The Gibson Deluxe tuners tend to be made by Schaller, Gotoh, or Grover, they've used all of these companies over the years. Never heard of them being made by Ping in China. Ping used to make good stuff including a version of the Floyd Rose, so I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand either.
Do you have any proof that the Gibson Deluxe's are made by Ping now? Are they actually stamped "Made in China" on the underside? 🤔 If they are now indeed made by Ping then that's yet another reason to not buy a Gibson!!!

Yes, they are Ping, if you have a recent Les Paul Standard ‘50s. They’re marked PW on them. It’s a bad design period. Better metal may help. Matchbox cars of old were made the same way. Staked pot metal.
The cheap metal Ping uses won’t hold for long after this fix.
You need to look at recent tuning machines used. They’re square backed, so they don’t help hold the worm gear in place. Complete trash.

@@rjake61 That's disgraceful Gibson using Ping tuners on their guitars considering what they charge for them!!! Like you said if they are marked PW then that means Ping Works which used to mean they were made in Taiwan (which is part of China, I know), but I don't even know if they are made there any more.
They had a decent reputation, but if they've moved to somewhere else and are making rubbish, there is no way on earth Gibson should be using them. Even some of the Epiphone's use the Wilkinson stuff which is made in Korea, and are decent quality. I think the Epiphone Deluxe tuners are made at the Jin Ho factory in Korea where the Wilkinson/Gotoh stuff is made, and they are decent quality in my experience.
I know the Fender tuners, even the locking ones are stamped "PW", and it's just not good enough. These companies are using cheap hardware to save money despite putting up the prices all the time, and we all get ripped off, and I'm sick of it. 😡
I think I've had my quota of musical gear for this lifetime, and once I've got my guitars into shape with the best parts, I won't be buying any more, especially as prices are now ridiculous!!! 🤔😬
