Great work on this video. It's really true. Having to be the only one that's front line and center (well most times) you'll need adjust alot more than worrying about counter swapping.
A lot of the problems you faced happened due to switching to 5v5. Back then, it was a much nicer experience to tank as the second tank should usually cover your weaknesses. Even if they didn’t, it did relieve some pressure off you and you could make things work that you could never get away with in OW 2. The most unique experience was me as Rein with 2nd tank being ball. Normally that doesn’t work but ball messing up their back line meant I could charge in more to add chaos. I played dive Rein and it worked beautifully!
i miss it so much. it was reassuring and hilarious at the same time. we had each others backs. i always played dva, but in ow2 i feel so out of place, so i pretty much gave up my main. still trying to make her work though, just need to rewire my brain to play like a solo tank.
It's so funny to me how tank players have now decided OW1 tank was so fun despite the role being so fucking dead it had insta queues while DPS and Supp would get regular 30 min+ queues in gm. Where were all the OW1 tank enjoyers when I was sitting in queue for hours of my life lmao

Kinda crazy I'm watching a video of you "finally reaching GM" on Tank. And literally just 2 days ago I "finally reached GM" on Support. We love to see it ❤
I've been having alot of bad tanks lately and the way i used to deal with it is by playing tank, but as Flats said, it gets boring after a while, and nobody else wants to do it. The only ones willing aren't very good in my experience.
Ive mained Rein since 2016 and have done pretty well. I'm currently diamond 2 and stared 2nd maining Orisa. Turns out that most counters to Rein, orisa matchs up well against.
My honest experience with tank is just whenever you get counter swap the play is just to ignore the player that just counter swap you. an easy example is winston with reaper. yes reaper deletes winston but a good winston is not trying to 1v1 the reaper, a good winston tries to create space by denying players space on the map so you can just ignore him and dive other players instead and if he does try to peel for his team then just jump away or just don't dive in general and play a somewhat poking playstyle with secondary fire and the reaper looses a lot of value. another great example is when I get told to swap of rein because they have a bastion. surprisingly enough a better shield than your own is just cover. once you hear the bastion go into turret mode, get to cover, try to find a new angle or a new place where the bastion cant hurt you and that's it. just because someone swaps doesn't mean the game is unplayable, it just means you have to play it way differently and if you swap the second you even get slightly countered then you'll never learn to adapt your playstyle to these tough scenarios
very good video. I have experienced quite the same things on my journey to gm. I even main zarya 😂. But tbf i haven't reached gm yet. Stuck in high masters.

I agree that a smurfing damage player is hard to deal with, but I feel a smurfing tank is hard to deal with, since they will mess up your plays so much.
I think a big problem for tank players - especially for us silver/gold tanks - is that everyone knows how to counter pick a tank. This is what Flats keeps saying. Even if you pop as a tank, you are immediately countered, meaning you need to play at a different level which is not in our skill set as metal rank tanks.
True, but this will make you better in the long run. I’m a t500 doom player, and I would rather play some tougher matchups because I have so much experience for them. You might have to put more work in, but it will make you better
@@Chugmaballz totally agree with you. Maybe I am just not that determined enough or busy with life in general, so I just gave up on comp & just play unranked. No stress there that I am hurting my teammates by getting countered.
Honestly. When you get counter picked the best thing to do is keep a mental note of your counter’s cooldowns before committing your own cooldowns. Example: If you’re playing Queen and they pick Junkrat to counter. He has two mines that fuck up your carnage. So what you wanna do is wait for him to use both of his mines then shout to close the distance, carnage and kill him. Sometimes I'm not in the mood but I'm still going to learn way more than I could though any other match.
Had you picked any tank other than Zarya I think your experience would be significantly different. The counter swap meta is much more punishing when youre not Zarya. Her cleanse is a game changer, and adds a lot of agency to her that other tanks just dont have. Im not trying to imply that you wouldnt make GM on another tank, but I must insist that you would have had much different things to say about the Tank experience in this video
I would very likely not being able to play any other tank at a GM level at the moment, and I don't doubt that I would have more, or different things to say had I played other tanks. I'll probably try learning more heroes in the future, but I only have so much time for Overwatch, and for me one-tricking is just the most efficient way to learn a particular hero.
That was the case for the entirety of OW1, they changed it for OW2. You can test it in-game by changing the ratio and you'll see that the top and bottom objects are still in view.
The Tank experience is simply unplayable if you want to play Ball or Doomfist. It takes all enjoyment out of the game since the entire enemy team will swap to counter you and win off of that alone.
That's just playing tank in general. When I play tank I play rein and I consistently get 3-5 people on the enemy team countering me. I just let them counter pick and still stomp them tho. the best thing to do when you get countered from my experience is to stay with what you're playing. 9/10 times the enemies that swap to counter you don't actually play them so sure it makes it a bit harder but they still usually suck at them
@@altfemboy3109 That usually doesn't work for me. I main Ball in GM4, and when the enemy goes Sombra, Brig, Orisa, Mei, I have an impossible time to make things work. I need to pull the most extreme plays out of my ass just to get a single engagement. I can try to force it, but swapping will make the game 10x easier.
You have to be Chazm or Zbra to really know how to make it work at the highest levels. It's definitely possible, but you will need a lot of experience, and even then the effort to value ratio is not particular in your favor.
@@dark_matter8420 I don't play Ball so I can't speak to that. I have played against many good ball players tho and even when my team swaps to counters the ball still has a decent chance to stomp. But that's my perspective as someone who doesn't play ball
As a Beta OW 1 tank player you used to have 50-60 tank combos. Now it’s 2-4 meta picks. If you’re playing the wrong tank on wrong map vs wrong comp with wrong comp you are a massive liability and need to swap. There is no counter play on these - as you put it “one dimensional heroes” - that can overcome 2-3 soft/hard counters of equal skill. Sure you can change up your gameplay some but the extra weight falls to your team. You one tricked Zarya which has a way to deal with most tanks biggest problem - Anti Nade. You then don’t have to rely on having a Kiriko or counter nade. Try one tricking Rein into nade/bastion with no cleanse to GM. Sure you might be able to do it. But I doubt you will have any fun whatsoever.
I will be the first to admit that I probably could not figure out how to one-trick Rein to GM as easily as Zarya, and I do not dispute that the experience probably wouldn't be particularly enjoyable unless you're LHCloudy.
"if youre doing well, you can expect multiple people to counterpick you even though there are 4 other people on your team" 4 other people on my team? Where? All i ever see in gold and below is widowmaker with 20k damage but 5-6 kills, soldier 76 running in and dying, and 1 support hurriedly going to heal that widowmaker while the other support is struggling to juggle healing 3 other people.
congrats you are now about the equivalent of an overwatch 1 high diamond player what you said about counterswapping in 8:25 is only partly true, the correct way of dealing with counterswapping on tank would be to pick sigma
I'm not gonna lie and say tank is a great experience but, by god, there is nothing that makes me feel better in OW2 than diffing a cow (Orisa) player as rein.
Beating your hard matchups will always be satisfying. I play the cow (sorry spear is too fun) and there’s no better feeling than watching someone swap to Zarya only to keep rolling them.
You can bind 2 keys to one ability in the settings, but the HUD only shows the first key bound. Since I never changed the default controls, and just changed the second bind, the HUD doesn't show my left-handed bindings.
That smurfing Soj vs smurfing Winston example just goes to show how little exp this channel has on tank play. Which makes sense considering zarya is basically just another dps
I'm not saying you're wrong but I would be curious why people think tank has better carry-potential than DPS. For me it's intuitive that the role that can one-shot you from infinite distance has the better theoretical carry-potential. Keep in mind by potential I'm referring to maximum possible potential without respect to difficulty. If you had an aimbot it would most likely be better to pick Sojourn than Winston for example.
My man said tank has the lowest carry potential but acknowledged that an AFK tank teammate is worse than having an AFK DPS teammate. This man lying about tank. I know 2 top 500 tank mains that swear up and down that tank is the most important and tank is how you carry.
Yeah for some reason non-tank players never seem to consider the fact that they can also pick to synergize with their tank, rather than demanding that the tank synergize with them
also 5:11, no, no, just NO. You can absolutely carry as tank, maybe get some exp as sigma/doom/ball/dva even winston, and not the slow damaging "wait for my beam to get charged" zarya, bruh, your other videos are so good, this one just NAHH, learn tank more before making these blanket statements
I think you may have misinterpreted what I'm saying. You can of course carry teams as a tank. What I'm saying is that given equal skill in all roles, any game you could have carried as a tank, you could have carried even harder on a different role.
As a tank player since season 1 of ow1 I disagree completely. Tank is the easiest role to carry on. You don’t think that, because you don’t counter swap and one trick. Your zarya won’t do shit to my rein or monkey.

But that's my perspective as someone who doesn't play ball
heeeeeeey qué tal. Buen video.
You don’t even have to be good to have 4 people swap to counter
I will be the first to admit that I probably could not figure out how to one-trick Rein to GM as easily as Zarya, and I do not dispute that the experience probably wouldn't be particularly enjoyable unless you're LHCloudy.
damn what pc u got ur quality is better then my eyeballs
i9-13900k + RTX 4090, but I turn up the saturation when I play, so that's probably what you're seeing
"if youre doing well, you can expect multiple people to counterpick you even though there are 4 other people on your team"
4 other people on my team? Where? All i ever see in gold and below is widowmaker with 20k damage but 5-6 kills, soldier 76 running in and dying, and 1 support hurriedly going to heal that widowmaker while the other support is struggling to juggle healing 3 other people.
Everything you mentioned in the video is why I don't play OW for 4 years now hehe, glad I didn't missed much.
congrats you are now about the equivalent of an overwatch 1 high diamond player
what you said about counterswapping in 8:25 is only partly true, the correct way of dealing with counterswapping on tank would be to pick sigma
ego
I'm not gonna lie and say tank is a great experience but, by god, there is nothing that makes me feel better in OW2 than diffing a cow (Orisa) player as rein.
Beating your hard matchups will always be satisfying. I play the cow (sorry spear is too fun) and there’s no better feeling than watching someone swap to Zarya only to keep rolling them.
I get Rein/Winston/Ram swaps a lot since I play Zarya, and it is indeed satisfying when they get outplayed anyway.
How is your FOV so wide ??
the default is 113
the max is 113……
wtf are you on abt
@@aplacewherefunandfunkythin705 look at the screen?
Its a wider screen so the obs recording can be a bit jank
Overwatch gives you more fov if you change the ratio to 21:9. I play on an ultrawide monitor so I'm on 21:9 by default.
@@Casual314 good to know thank you!
Is this even your gameplay? The mousecam shows your right hand on the right side of the keyboard, but your abilities show left shift and E still
You can bind 2 keys to one ability in the settings, but the HUD only shows the first key bound. Since I never changed the default controls, and just changed the second bind, the HUD doesn't show my left-handed bindings.
@@Casual314 I learn a new thing everyday. Never knew you were a left handed player
When in doubt, blame the tank 😂
Might as well put that in the game's Terms of Service
Great video! You can just mute the voice and text of the toxic person. It's not all or nothing.
My man said tank has the lowest carry potential but acknowledged that an AFK tank teammate is worse than having an AFK DPS teammate. This man lying about tank. I know 2 top 500 tank mains that swear up and down that tank is the most important and tank is how you carry.
Imagine telling your dps and support to swap as a tank player. 💀
Yeah for some reason non-tank players never seem to consider the fact that they can also pick to synergize with their tank, rather than demanding that the tank synergize with them
yo
This guy watches too much spilo
Never too much Spilo
Zarya? not interested youre elo inflated playing that champ
People still think Zarya is overpowered?
also 5:11, no, no, just NO.
