As a fellow GM rein, 10/10 guide. I went from bronze to GM, and virtually anyone can on rein. What got me to climb us the the only thing I think he missed. creativity. Maximizing value on rein requires killing squishies, NOT THE TANK. Pinning a squishy makes the tank have to peel you, creating space for your frontline because the tank isn’t there anymore. So be aggressive, take an off angle and get access to backline. Players like LhCloudy do this all day, it’s the most fun way to play rein, and imo the way to get the most value.
I totally agree man! I tried to cover a lot of the basics, and kinda emphasise playing that solo-queue and pin-heavy Rein. I think it's so easy for new tank players to focus on the upfront tank battle, whereas focussing squishies is almost ALWAYS more value - and that's something I'll always promote on this channel :) appreciate the feedback though dude. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and congrats on hitting gm!
Typed this out then realized you aimed for a more basics guide lol. Other techs, as a GM1 rein: -Corner/double swinging, getting two hits in the time of one, is the counter to a perma-swinger or quick peeks against a full charge sym. This requires time to setup, so I'd say double swing then cancel with FS. -Jump pinning or 180 pins, so you pin someone from the side or back, in order to pin them into your team or wall-playing a rein v rein practice code in the workshop demonstrates this a lot -Pin jump-cancelling pin and jumping at the end, to get to higher ground, like 3rd point Kings Row upper areas. -Beat goes on for longer than an instant, so when blocking it, keep the shield up for longer than usual, and cover an enemy. -Third person peek to scout -Crouch FS after shatter -Save FS for swing-FS, shatters, or windows -FS above zarya's head to bait bubble without feeding it -pin cancel shatter, 180 shatter, third person cancel shatters-just get creative with it -Don't push sig if they have slow -Flat's cradle-left shoulder sucks, right shoulder boops on pins -Rein is a dive hero, he goes in and out to squishies. Pin in, shield out -unbind S key -tape down pin key
hahaha yeah, I try to aim these guides to teach the basics and the general playstyle. there's SO much techy stuff on EVERY hero, that your comment could actually be an entire guide video in itself :')
nice video. onw small thing you missed is the hammer knockback direction manipulation. since hammer swings knock back enemies to the left or right, you can use this to your advantage. if u dont hold attack and wait a little until ur next swing, it comes from the right to the left again. can be useful to box enemies in and dont help/let them escape sometimes (really miniscule thing, but it is a tech that helps a little, and can be used often)
The primary thing for new reins is to NOT HOLD YOUR SHIELD. When your shield is broken it puts you at such a bad matchup against everything not in swing range. Like he said, use it selfishly. Its YOUR resource.
very true! the main problem with shield is that it stops you from using your most valuable tools - hammer and pin. it's great for the reasons I mentioned in the video, but is definitely NOT Reinhardt's focus as a hero :D
Does this also apply in cases like when Bastion is in his Sentry configuration? He gets turned into a sitting duck, and I always feel urged to keep him safe but also kinda feel like I'm obstructing his line of sight.
@@Vorexia hold it until you get to a safe spot or have someone be able to force the bastion out. I misunderstood the comment, if the bastion is playing right, he shouldnt need your shield. He should be playing cover and it is his own fault he dies. Not your job to correct poor positioning. But still There are circumstances where you need to hold it to be able to stall for your team, things like High Noon and other things where its hard to position correctly or make it so they are forced to run away instead of burst down the Cass. And now a year later and the many buffs to the shield health, you can hold your shield a little longer to stall for your team to do damage while keeping you safe.
I kinda have a hard time agreeing with this bc what if my bastion is in sentry mode and we need to poke them back he goes sentry and I hold it in front of him that and a few more things like advancing while my team lays down fire with my supports as well untill I gets around 600-500 health I drop it start swinging and fire striking

Awesome guide for every rank, I just wanna put some other tech options on it Against a ulting doom, try to pin the ult, not block it, because will disposition the doom and he will have to back out To block the ram ult, you HAVE to communicate with your teammates to stay behind your shield, because if someone is peaking outside your shield it will not matter And in sniper maps, use your shield until the health is low, because it will allow your widow/ache to get a early peak without have to worry about cover

Nice guide bro, this video will give you a basic knowledge of how to play as Reinhardt, you will gain further knowledge only with experience. I speak as Reinhardt Onetrick , who has 500 hours on this hero
thank you! I totally agree with you. guide videos can only take you so far - actually playing and grasping a good sense of the hero is how you truly master them :)
seriously your commentary, gameplay and way to explain everything is top quality, i thought i was watching some big channel until i saw the views and subs count. 100% one day you'll be a BIG channel, 1+ sub
people always seem to forget mentioning body blocking. rein is very powerful at just normal body blocking but he has an improved version where he tilts his shield flick, similarly to how you offset hammer swings, so that the corner of your shield goes through the enemy and denies them heals. also, orisa doesn't counter good rein players. orisa lacks the ability to create pressure outside of her cds, which is completely converse to reinhardt. this means that orisa, in a matchup will always have to expend her cds first; this should be giving rein the advantage. i'm not going to say its heavily rein favored, because its not, but orisa is no where near a hardcounter to reinhardt. only reinhardts who don't respect her cds and play proactively in the matchup will lose. lets say orisa needs to push the last choke on 2nd point king's row. the cart is in the middle of the hallway/street, with a rein having the cover of the cart and the corners on either side to LoS with. for orisa to push this point she will have to move into the open and initially hide behind the cart, but she will still take damage due to defense having the high ground and either corner still being able to shoot behind the payload. orisa will have to expend either shift or e to move beyond this point. expending e means that the rein is freely swinging on your approach, followed by flame strikes that will clip your whole team in the choke. now that you're in melee range of rein and in LoS of his whole team, you will be forced to shift. rein by this point still has full shield and can still throw out flame strikes while he gives up minimal space waiting out your slow shift; space that you're taking with now only e coming back up and spear. rein swings on you/team forcing out spear which he can block into a pin due to no shift; while continuing to flame strike your team to death. we can take this example to pretty much every map and even where things like open point control would naturally favor orisa, she will have to always expend cds before rein; then it just becomes a snowball effect in rein's advantage. we could also take into consideration things like how dps/supports will effect the matchup, but most things that are oppressive to rein are infinitely more oppressive to orisa with the exception of sombra hack/sym.
Great guide! Even though I knew most of these things, you explain them so clear that it was refreshing to watch. One little tech/thing you missed is that you can jump after a pin cancel and climb some elevated surfaces or jump over some gaps. Cloudy has a video about it explaining the tech.
thanks man! Rein has sooo many small techs, I just didn't think they would fit into this style of video too well :') I think yeatle posted a great video on broken shatter spots too - all very useful advice for sure!

Amazing guide, definitely earned my sub. Just one question though, how high can a terrain be before rein's shatter will be negated? At 11:07, I wasn't expecting the shatter to climb its way up to enemies on a higher terrain.
eyy thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed! that shatter was probably one of the highest points in the game you can reach :') I think the official maximum height is 0.5m - yeatle made a super interesting video on this a while back th-cam.com/video/VptsxjqVDMw/w-d-xo.html
Good video! I got to silver 2 as a Reinhardt one-trick after watching another guide, but have been struggling in the past few days. This gives some good tips that I could use to get myself out of that dip!
thanks man! Moira ult is definitely a tricky one. I think you definitely have to use your general game sense to know when to pin this, but thought it was worth mentioning in the video for sure :)
thank you man! I'm glad you enjoyed :) I actually use light green for teammates and red for enemies in game - the replay viewer is just a bit buggy with colours :')
Oh I always play Reinhardt differently I just tried to eat up as much projectiles and stuff and have the DPS is take care of most of them and then if they get close that's what I use my hammer otherwise if they're far away I use fire strike
Hard to play rein when everyone is so against him. Anytime I try to play him (he is one of my favorite tanks) I instantly get no support from dps or support. Feels like i have to always change because nobody ever wants to work with a rein and forces you to switch to give any heals or backup from dos
I been maining Rein since ow1 and let me tell you, I have a sixth sense for pins. Worse how I can steer and cancel in ow2??? *cue the freight train horn*
Sheild botting to me is allowing free passage from corner to corner with a massive open feild I tell my team to group up for from one corner to the next holdable corner with sheild I do walk and not jump but I use my sheild as a life saver for my team I’d die before I allow my team to die if I can help it
I dislike the dogma of always ignoring mobile enemy tanks, like winston ball and doom. It's actually insane how many of them are constantly feeding, even in low GMs - one pin and they die, free space free tempo free win. Rein has significantly lower survivability then them, so sometimes holding the line 1v4 as Rein alone is not the play. Enemy squishes will attrition you out while your backline is gonna try to fight back unsuccessfully. Huge pins win games, always punish the enemy for being too cocky.
I think there's definitely context to when pinning back is and isn't the right play. As someone who started out maining Winston, dive tanks will often be prepared to escape when they hear the long charge up of a Rein pin. If they get out, they've done their job in making the Rein give up the space he was holding. There are obvious situations where pinning back IS good, but in other situations you can be playing into the dive tank's hands - just be wary of that :)
How is Reinhardt vs rammattra easy when you say you have to fight him in a 1v1 but it’s only winning if your team supports you?? So it’s not a 1v1 your team just has to do better than the enemy’s.
apologies if you thought this video didn't deliver. I think it contains most information you need to play Reinhardt - making that into a catchy youtube title is kinda difficult tho :')
Then make your own video... I swear everyone will find something to complain about, stop complaining and hating and do something productive. If you think you know more and can do it better then make your own video... Hating and complaining for nothing... This video is fine and explains a whole lot .
@@BaileysOver 7:13 is just not good tips, this is very situational and i hope i never see my fucking rein pin a bob 10:25 again completely situational, most of the time this is even bad 14:30 hes literally dogshit most of the time, especially in ranked 16:30 again wrong, you want a mobile tank like monke or dva theres probably more i dont wanna watch it again
hey man! I didn't get a notification for this reply, apologies for the late response. lemme reply to each point real quick :) 7:13 - situational? yes, agreed. bad plays? definitely not, if used in the right situation. pinning a Bob out of the Ashe player's intended position is a good thing. not to mention that Bob cannot shoot whilst being pinned, and you can shield Bob from dealing any damage after you reposition it. same goes for the other ultimates listed there too! situational, and up to the player to extract value from 10:25 - not only as a Reinhardt player, but as a Winston player too... I would heavily disagree with this being a bad play. you're creating a 4v1 situation where the enemy team cannot do anything except shoot into your shield. it's situational, of course, and things like a Moira ult can disrupt this play, but as a general gameplan it is 100% the best move to make here on Rein :) 14:30 - meta change all the time, and Overwatch is a super nuanced game. the gamemode, map, team composition, and even enemy composition play a LARGE role in the effectiveness of Reinhardt. it was really just a sentence to transition into the next segment - but he is definitely not an unusable tank in a general sense 16:30 - ideally, yes, you would be able to play more than 2 tanks. is Sigma a bad secondary tank to learn? not at all. and it's a super clean plug into my previous video :) I appreciate feedback on any of the stuff that I make, but a few of these were definitely nitpicky and possible not contrived from the actual content within the video. I can understand having preconceptions about how the game works based on your playing experience, but I try to make these guides without any preconceived notions. if you have any questions on why I chose to make any of the points in this video, I'd be more than happy to answer them here or on any of my socials! @baileysover if you would like :)
yup, that's definitely one of her weaker matchups! I don't play much Zarya, but if you really wanna play into a Rein, I'd probably say to focus on building energy and ult charge, and get real aggressive if the Rein ever moves out of position :)
Do you know if you can reflect another Rein's firestrike as Rein? I think I saw a message pop op on my screen when I launched the game that mentioned a new ability like that. Maybe I'm trippin haha.

Great GP😊
It sucks if you don't have good support that why ppl probably are sour about this tank I know I was
Bonus: Listen to "Sabaton - Ghost Division" while playing Reinhardt for MASSIVE TANK ENERGY
With the meta rn rein is really annoying to play, i always get shredded by their dps mainly by bastion and soujourn
oh yeah, this meta is totally over for Rein :'))
Ramatra can just punch through his shield, so... Idk
You sound like the overwatch version of grrt
LOL I can actually kinda hear it. his accent is a lil different but I see the comparison :')
big slam
FOR THE CRUSADERS
@@BaileysOver HAMMER DOWN 🔨🔨
Lots of pin talk, no talk of the left/right side pin.
There's a LOT I had to cut out of this vid, as it was already long enough :') but I think it's a good starter guide for anyone learning the hero :)
@@BaileysOver You did a good job,dw.
thank you! :)
bro thinks ramattra counters rein you are a robot my frien
It's definitely one of the softer counters, but it is definitely a favourable matchup for Ram imo :)
How is Reinhardt vs rammattra easy when you say you have to fight him in a 1v1 but it’s only winning if your team supports you?? So it’s not a 1v1 your team just has to do better than the enemy’s.
Not a complete guide and not every tech we need to know
apologies if you thought this video didn't deliver. I think it contains most information you need to play Reinhardt - making that into a catchy youtube title is kinda difficult tho :')
@@BaileysOverThis video was perfectly fine, op should make his own video to show us how it's done then. 😂😂😂
Then make your own video... I swear everyone will find something to complain about, stop complaining and hating and do something productive. If you think you know more and can do it better then make your own video... Hating and complaining for nothing... This video is fine and explains a whole lot .
And what if your teammates weren't aggressive or your heals wasn't good 🗿
Yeahhh Overwatch ranked certainly isn't perfect. But, over time, if you keep improving you'll climb... it's just very slow rn :')
quite a bit of misinformation
where? 🧐
@@BaileysOver 7:13 is just not good tips, this is very situational and i hope i never see my fucking rein pin a bob
10:25 again completely situational, most of the time this is even bad
14:30 hes literally dogshit most of the time, especially in ranked
16:30 again wrong, you want a mobile tank like monke or dva
theres probably more i dont wanna watch it again
hey man! I didn't get a notification for this reply, apologies for the late response. lemme reply to each point real quick :)
7:13 - situational? yes, agreed. bad plays? definitely not, if used in the right situation. pinning a Bob out of the Ashe player's intended position is a good thing. not to mention that Bob cannot shoot whilst being pinned, and you can shield Bob from dealing any damage after you reposition it. same goes for the other ultimates listed there too! situational, and up to the player to extract value from
10:25 - not only as a Reinhardt player, but as a Winston player too... I would heavily disagree with this being a bad play. you're creating a 4v1 situation where the enemy team cannot do anything except shoot into your shield. it's situational, of course, and things like a Moira ult can disrupt this play, but as a general gameplan it is 100% the best move to make here on Rein :)
14:30 - meta change all the time, and Overwatch is a super nuanced game. the gamemode, map, team composition, and even enemy composition play a LARGE role in the effectiveness of Reinhardt. it was really just a sentence to transition into the next segment - but he is definitely not an unusable tank in a general sense
16:30 - ideally, yes, you would be able to play more than 2 tanks. is Sigma a bad secondary tank to learn? not at all. and it's a super clean plug into my previous video :)
I appreciate feedback on any of the stuff that I make, but a few of these were definitely nitpicky and possible not contrived from the actual content within the video. I can understand having preconceptions about how the game works based on your playing experience, but I try to make these guides without any preconceived notions. if you have any questions on why I chose to make any of the points in this video, I'd be more than happy to answer them here or on any of my socials! @baileysover if you would like :)
Gold 2 tank here. I main zarya and find rein to be my biggest problem.
yup, that's definitely one of her weaker matchups!
You can't refect anything as rien, although it would be interesting
@@1ceToFire thx bro I tgought I was crazy...now I'm sure 🤣
