I was in school and walking to the basement when suddenly a Shambler (the Cyberdemon of Quake so to speak), a fiend and an Ogre (not Shrek) started chasing me. An imp is sulking in the corner: "This monster is like an imp but stronger, that monster is like an imp but faster, yada yada. But can any of them losers gib like me?!"
In relation to height, this is what irked me about about Game Theory's video about Doom being 2D. The game clearly functions in a third dimension. It's not perfect (can't overlap rooms, infinite enemy and explosion height, hitscanning can aim far above where you're aiming, etc.) but it clearly follows a Y axis. It's why you can't scale a cliff by just walking into it. And I see NOBODY point this out against them.
I wouldn't take GT's stuff to heart. His theories are riddled with holes, lack of research and misinformation. I debunked several myself. His one theory about FNAF 4 was perplexing. I couldn't find a single thing to back up his claims at all. Believe me I tried. I looked for an hour. Everything I read pointed against him. I pointed this out and his sheeple fans turned on me going so far as to make false claims about him. It became increasingly clear he just does it for the fame and money. He just claims any old thing and people claim it as fact. I wouldn't be so irked if he just presented them as theory instead of fact. I hate him cause he has a superiority complex. Reportedly he belittled people for not liking Coke and acted superior cause he did. Also he deleted one of Scott Cawthorn's (creator of FNAF) comments saying his theory was wrong and everybody defended him for doing so.
@@ZombifiedBuizel He even called a quirk of a big workaround of most 3d games (interpolation, and immediately moving large distances still viewable) "running through objects". I'm still in disbelief that he made something worse than even that shitshow.
@@realPurpleOrb What baffles me is that people cite him as a credible source. The guy is worse than wikipedia. One fact check is usually enough to see how wrong he is. Also I'm not sure what interpolation is or immediately moving long distances still visible is. However running through objects is commonly referred to as noclipping. A common glitch in games is being able to pass through a wall or object that under normal circumstances would not be possible otherwise known as clipping through an object. I'm not entirely knowledgeable with programming but I understand a few things.
I'd really like a Doom 64 enemy video, but since they would be so similar, maybe you could go into how the demons were changed. In both design and attributes! I'd love that.
Grand Pacino? Is that like a talking grand piano with Al Pacino’s voice? “Hey, Dollface! Why don’t you come sit on my bench and play with my keys? HOO rAH!”
All these years I've been playing Doom like a boss and somehow I (embarrassingly) was not aware until just now that the Spider Mastermind was immune to splash damage like the Cyberdemon. I always love watching your stuff! Always informative. Keep up the great work, sir!
I actually never knew that some of the Revenant's missiles weren't homing. I just thought I was using the architecture to neutralize them before they could turn towards me and seek me out. But I guess it's not worthwhile to base strategy on a random chance that a missile won't be homing, rather than just treating all of them as if they are. What an endlessly fascinating masterpiece it is, this Doom.
I love this stuff because I never even really thought about how the hit boxes of enemies probably aren't 2D and are probably cubes, doom is extremely old but it still amazes me how much is in such a old game
i remember watching a 20 minute video talking about how thicc doom monsters are and now i'm watching decino do the same thing in an even more literal sense. what a time to be alive.
I've never played any room game ever. But I've watched every one of these videos. If I ever play them I can take pride in the fact I forgot everything and just shoot things till they die.
What I'd love would be for John Carmack to sit down and reminisce about the development of Doom. Imagine the stories he could tell, the anecdotes, the insights! Something similar to what he did for Wolf3D would be awesome
I'll never get over how unbalanced Doom is. The same attack can either do close to 0 dmg, to the point where you won't even feel that you got hit or leave you two steps away from death..
@@amaruqlonewolf3350 Its TOO random though. Its simply unreasonable for it to work like this. A mistake should always be more or less equally punished, not range from being irrelevant to almost insta-ending your life.
@@amaruqlonewolf3350 Revenants, barons, arachnotrons can do a crazy amount if they combo you.. Also did you really apply "real life logic" to a video game??? Pretty poorly too... There are better ways to make this comparison.
@@panthekirb7561 You may not have been alone in thinking that, as Duke Nukem 3d did make damage from projectiles or hitscan the same, with randomization being things like if a trooper fake dies But I won't call randomization good or bad design. This is probably the best and most informative doom video you have ever made please never stop having these amazing ideas. Doom is such an important fps.
Fun anecdote about the Mancubus: I remember reading that they went with its distinctive firing pattern because Romero figured that players are biased towards strafing right when instinctively dodging projectiles. The idea being that you'd see the Mancubus firing, dodge then whoops you actually just ran into his other fireball. Admittedly though, I can't 100% remember the veracity of this; possible that I'm misremembering some analysis I read as being from John.
I feel like you should do this with every enemy in each doom game that introduces a new enemy and if you cannot find Its proper health then just measure it accordingly.
I feel the Spider Mastermind was a bit underwhelming as a boss (of the original three episodes), compared to the Cyberdemon. Pity she didn't get boosted a little more to be more scary and intense.
Little tidbits of enemy information like this was always a really big interest of mine for video games. I always hoped that game strategy guides would have as much information as possible for me to read up on.

You can never beat the OG imp because there's so god damn many of em. Also he can gib :)
In short, the guy will ultimately never catch on, just like Spy Kids, a lot of Ubisoft games, and Channel Awesome. There, I said it.
Got some news for you then.
I'd really like a Doom 64 enemy video, but since they would be so similar, maybe you could go into how the demons were changed. In both design and attributes!
I'd love that.
Good news!
These kind of videos really put into perspective how complicated and interesting programming and coding really can be. Great video man.

Seeing that yellow background fills me with joy.

Me too.
To be honest, the thumbnails are the biggest reason I subscribed.
Its just a very lovely yellow. I appreciate it immensely.
Someone threw jarate at the backround
It kinda reminds me what happens if you open the menu while outside the map with noclip
The Mancubus fireball attack is very clever, cuz if you try to dodge, you might run into another fireball
Very clever!
The Revenant sharing the same height as a zombieman isn't an oversight. It's to add to the spookiness.
23:31 poor decino trying to keep his channel PG13
And yet in most videos he reads off Cappabitch no problem. Maybe he doesn't see it for what it is. lol.
He usually says Heck instead of Hell
But has no problem reading “Beaks make me coom”
new game category: "Imps-like"
Understanding the technical backstage of the game really does help a lot. Like knowing enemies fire in bursts, I had not noticed that.
No matter how much I play this game, and no matter how much I learn of its development, I still can't fathom that it all happened in the early 90s.

All these years I've been playing Doom like a boss and somehow I (embarrassingly) was not aware until just now that the Spider Mastermind was immune to splash damage like the Cyberdemon. I always love watching your stuff! Always informative. Keep up the great work, sir!
"It's like an imp, but..."
Can be used for other games too. Like Earthbound, "what's Gygas like?" It's like an imp, but disassociated a bit. Sephiroth? Imp with a sword.

The chart in the end is surprisingly a full-blown fuel for doom waifus construction

Your simplistic and straightforward explanations are very pleasing to me both as a doomer and an engineer.
Freaking fantastic video as always man. Doom is such a gem and I hope it will stay with us for generations to come.
I love this stuff because I never even really thought about how the hit boxes of enemies probably aren't 2D and are probably cubes, doom is extremely old but it still amazes me how much is in such a old game

Doom, a game nearly 28 years old, still providing us with top notch content.
I've never played any room game ever. But I've watched every one of these videos. If I ever play them I can take pride in the fact I forgot everything and just shoot things till they die.
The Room series sucks I recommend Doom instead.

@@basedSkeleton Knowing good game design makes a guy salty. Typical youtube gamer moment.
@@panthekirb7561 You may not have been alone in thinking that, as Duke Nukem 3d did make damage from projectiles or hitscan the same, with randomization being things like if a trooper fake dies
But I won't call randomization good or bad design. I'd like to think of not getting damaged as bad as consolation prizes, that way you always respect an enemies' attack as you won't know if the next hit is fatal or not
