    Supplies:
    Fab! Tinted and All in One Primer/Sealer: heirloomtraditi...
    Chalk Paint in Basque and A La Mode: heirloomtraditi...
    Chalk Paint Brushes: heirloomtraditi...
    Other supplies: Kraft paper bag, fine grit sanding sponge, vacuum
    Directions:
    1. Apply a coat of Fab tinted primer on clean and vaccuumed fabric. Let dry and sand with a paper bag.
    2. Apply a coat of chalk paint, do not dilute with water. Let dry.
    3. Sand fabric gently with a sanding sponge, then follow up with a brown bag.
    4. Repeat sets 2 & 3 if desired. I did one coat because I liked having the strips show through.
    5. Apply one coat of Fab! All in One sealer and let dry. Finish with a light paper bag sanding.
    ALWAYS vacuum after sanding and before proceeding with another coat of finish.
    Project estimates:
    Large couch:3 fab kits (more if porous materiel) 2 quarts paint
    Loveseat: 2 fab kits, 1 quart paint
    Chair: 1 fab kit, 1 quart paint (you will have leftovers so make accent pieces!)
    If you have a set of chairs with upholstered seats only a quart of paint and i FAB! kit should suffice.
    Let me know if you have questions in the comments below and good luck!

    "White has more pigmentation" No it doesn't. Also, you should have wet the surface prior to staining the fibres (Not painting) Having the surface wet would have used much less product, dry much quicker and also prevent the fabric from hardening and/or potentially cracking up.

    • @malia9420

      Wet with what if you don’t mind me asking? Just water?

    • @RooibaardBoerseun
      @RooibaardBoerseun 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water

    • @RooibaardBoerseun
      @RooibaardBoerseun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mist and area with water.
      Do this again for the second coat.
      Not soak it but wet enough to help fabric absorb the stain (paint)
      Once you're satisfied with the colour and everything is 100% dry you can seal it with a thin layer or wax and polish it. You can find fabric wax but any wax will do. This will give it a leather appearance

      White paint and white Base are two different breeds of horse in the race here...
      White paint does actually have more "white color pigments". Base paints only look like "white" paint before they are tinted and are actually not a heavy white pigment like a white paint and if used without adding tinting pigments would dry much less white than a white paint.
      The reason for this is that Base paints are by design to be tinted with color pigment only. For example let's take a primary red paint (let's say for tinting the Base paint requires 1 fluid Oz of red pigment) 1 fl oz of red pigment added to an actual white paint would result in a more pastel pink-ish and less of the deep primary red that the Base that is designed to be tinted results would be. That is because the tinted Base paints "whiteness" dries as "less white", (similar to how Elmer's White School Glue is white but dries more clear and not that same in the bottle color of white)...This is why the tinted Base type of paints will look much differeny (light/whiter) in a second coat over a dried first coat.

    can anyone else see the pattern after painting

    • @HHpantalaimon
      @HHpantalaimon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but that's the drawback with painting/dyeing upholstery, rather than just reupholstering the piece of furniture

    • @joannecarroll5504
      @joannecarroll5504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      You're SUPPOSED to see the pattern, didn't you hear her explaining? This type of fabric is known as a self-patterned stripe - woven into the upholstery fabric, creating glossy stripes & matt stripes (or smooth & rough) on the fabric. Paint only changes the colour on the outside of the fabric, it doesn't change how it was constructed 30 years ago. The pattern will continue to show light & shade now as the light hits the rough & smooth separately, just as she already explained to you.

    I like the pattern peeping through, the color block effect, and the overall final product. it looks very chic, and I could see that piece of furniture in a decorating mag. also, with the painting... you could always reupholster if you didn't like it. old furniture with wood frames..worth reworking, for sure.

    I really enjoyed this vid & would love to see you do more of this type of thing. As well as being a crafter, I'm an avid DIYer & I really don't watch a lot of DIY vids because I often feel disappointed in them - you see, my pet peeve is people doing a half-assed job & calling it a "hack" (probably has something to do with being the daughter of an engineer) instead of researching a job & doing it thoroughly so it lasts. I love that you put real effort into everything you do, you gave valuable insight with this project. Many thanks.

    I love this and the awning recommendation. Perfect! Also completely agree with your thinking on disposable furniture. I had begun looking for replacement bedroom furniture after 20 years when mom pointed out it was "real" and not particle board. So repairs and decoupaging it is and this video inspired more! Thank you so much, as a non-creative person you, patioelf, and CraftKlutch are invaluable!!
    ps: oh! A collab between you three would be so very cool! Maybe your individual takes on renewing patio furniture for the summer?

    I had no idea you could paint furniture, great video. My mom always took dye and used it to change the colors of fabric in her house, from curtains to throw rugs, lord help me if she ever had known about painting the furniture. We would never have had anywhere to sit. If I did this, I would get a lint roller to go along with the vacuum cleaner. I also wonder if there aren't some ways to make low cost chalk paint to save money. thanks again!

      Except it's almost impossible to control the knife if you do that. It's always important to be very conscious of where the knife will go if it slips but cutting away from your body is likely to result in a dog's breakfast. It's just down to care and technique.

      I know this video is two years old but I'm just seeing it. 👀 but child yes,you can paint any fabric or surface with chalk paint. Paint will change your life. I did my entire kitchen with chalk p and acrylic paint. Even painted the ugly gross wallpaper,cabinets,too.
      Kitchen looks like I spent thousands of dollars. Probably only cost me about $100. Also use Dollar Tree plastic placemats for a backsplash border type thing. It looks amazing. And all u have to do is staple them to the wall and cut them to fit. It looks so neat and very easy. Also if you want to change the color just spray paint them to any color you like. Or get new ones and start over. Or just use the pattern that's already on the placemats. So many different uses if you put your mind to it.
      Now on to painting my sofas. Gonna be way better than replacing it on a tight budget.
      I have nothing to lose...the sofas was given to me so, I've saved money already. 👍
      My entire old apt was DIY thrift store finds❤

    Do you think it would work on a velvet wing chair? I have an antique pink velvet chair that I would like to refinish.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple of ways to approach velvet. You can flatten the nap or try to preserve it. Preserving the nap is more challenging. I think I would (and I am going off-brand here) mix the paint and clear fab so the paint will be flexible, spray the velvet and fluff up the nap with a damp washcloth and use a rag to apply yhe paint/fab mix with a rag. Keep fluffing the fabric as you work. Or you can seal it first with fab and flatten the nap and paint like I did and you will have a smooth fabric when you are done losing the velvet nap and texture. In any even try and test in on an area that will not show first.

I'm wondering (hoping!) if you think the CRUNCHY wing back chair I chalk painted yesterday will be salvageable...I didn't water down the paint. (I watched the wrong vids before putting on the paint. I DID remember to spray down the upholstery. So what'd'ya think about using a sanding block, or an old bristle hair brush, or fine wire brush, or.. sledge hammer lmao to try to soften it back up.???.. I still need to put a second coat on but maybe I should just move on to my next project and screw that one up, too!! Grrrrr.

    You made the MOST used part of the couch the lightest? NOT a good idea. First to get dirty. Painted so VERY hard to clean. You should have gone solid green same shade & lightened it with toss cushions.

    Who would have thunk you could paint a couch? I'm not in love with this idea but it sure would save some money and it would definitely repurpose some old furniture. Good for you for trying this out and I hope you get a few years out of a well loved piece of furniture. Lord knows it is an investment these days when you buy new furniture.

    Hi wonder woman!😉 My gosh!! You sure put in a lot of work into this. And it shows!
    What a marvelous job you did and your couch turned out gorgeous!
    I'm pretty sure I'd never be able to take on such an enormous project.
    I sanded and painted my kitchen cabinets - ONCE and that's all I need to say about that😀 Never again! LOL!
    Thank you for sharing this process and how cool is it that fabric-covered furniture can be painted?!? Just awesome!!😊

    Is there a way to paint/dye a darker couch a lighter color safely without the original color of the furniture seeping through?
    I have a sage green set that id really like to dye/paint a lighter color light gray or even a yellow.

    You say it still feels soft, but when you hit it, it kind of sounds like outdoor furniture sounds. Does it feel like the kind of vinyl of outdoor furniture? I'd love to do this on my chair, but my husband would HATE it if it felt like that haha.

    It cracked me up when you said it wasn't like painting on a canvas~ have you ever stretched your own canvas? It's EXACTLY like painting on canvas that has not been primed yet... The priming is to seal the fibers so it doesn't drag!... LOL

    You mentioned scotch guard.... Would you recommend using scotch guard first to make a highly absorbable material less so in an attempt to cut down on paint used? How well does the fabric paint hold up on fabric that has been treated with scotch guard in the past or does it make a difference?

    I had to watch this because it was just so out of the norm for me. I didn't even think about painting a fabric sofa. I'm not into the ombre look as I think that will look dated very quickly but I do like the 2 toned look of the original fabric underneath. Not a project I'd undertake right now but still glad I know it's a possibility.

    What a great way to spruce up a well-made couch! I absolutely agree - they just don't make furniture like they used to!! Unless you want to spend serious money, and even then you have to really do your homework and check out the company and really look at the furniture. I think yours came out just wonderfully! And I love, love the color! I would have probably thought of doing this but would have immediately discounted the idea because I'd know it would be stiff and "crunchy"! But you've proved it possible!! Great job, great tips! Thanks!!

    It turned out beautiful! I have a solid oak framed Thomasville couch with springs in the cushions. It has lasted me 26 years and is just beginning to show wear. It's identical to yours with a different fabric. Want to visit and do mine? Lol! I am contemplating reupholstering it because it is way too nice to toss. I love older furniture.

    Wow, who knew you could do this?! Thank you for showing us the process so thoroughly. I have a high-low upholstery where the high part is bumply, and it's probably synthetic. Is that paintable? I'd paint the arms and front, then sew slipcovers for the cushions using the homemade fitted sheet method (see tutes on YT).
