  • BEFORE you paint upholstery and fabric with Chalk Paint, watch this video! Learn the process and what to avoid when selecting an upholstered piece of furniture to paint. Plus, answers to Chalk Painting upholstery FAQ’s.
    Leave your questions in the comments below!
    In this video, Deanna used Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan to paint the fabric on a mid century modern slipper chair. It is upholstered with a textured fabric called frieze*. Using the same paint, she also paints the wood legs that have been previously stained dark brown. All with no sanding, no priming, no prep work!
    Watch to the end of the video to hear her honest review of the process and results.

      I tried painting a chair, and it looks beautiful, but its so "crunchy" that no one will sit on it. What did I do wrong? And more importantly - is there anything I can do to save it? But that's just my story...yours turned out great! good video, too.

    • @chiron591
      @chiron591 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Margaret Colasont rub it with a paper bag or a fine sanding sponge. Takes the crunch out. Vacuuming after to get rid of dust.

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Margaret Colasont lightly sanding like chiron591 suggested can help to soften, great tip!! Just be careful not to sand through your paint! As far as what might have gone wrong, in my experience the more you sit in the chair it will start to soften up, however, too many layers of paint or not enough water can create a “crunchy” texture just like the chair in this video.

      Lol, I haven't tried painting upholstery fabric before, but I HAVE painted fabric....I repaint forgotten dolls, more into creepy dolls, lol, and I needed to make one of the clown outfits my dolls was wearing to not be so right and airy, hahaa! So, I just painted it over on one side with black chalk paint and even though the coverage was great, the fabric was VERY stiff. It was fine bc it's a display doll, but I am thinking maybe if I had wet the fabric, it wouldn't have been AS stiff. Next time I need the same outfit but dulled down, I'll def try wetting it first and water down the paint a bit! Thanks so much for this!

    I remember that fabric! I hated it. We had a couch with it and being a child in the 50's I wore dresses and that horrible fabric always hurt and scratched my legs! I'm looking forward to seeing your other fabric painting, as I have a chair with a faux leather seat that my cats have scratched. Watching this and another video gave me the idea to paint the seat.

    Hi Deanna: I painted a thrifted wing chair in French Linen years ago, and waxed it. The wood legs were dark brown, so I painted them with Provence, Florence and a bit of Aubusson, and distressed them showing more of the original brown, and used silver leafing for a metallic edge. Annie Sloan is absolutely the best and you are too. Nice tutorial and a lot of information. Thanks for a clear, concise presentation.

I've never used chalk paint before but may look into it now that I've seen this video. Thanks for a wonderful lesson. Will be following you for more advice. Have you ever painted a canvas dropcloth & used as a canopy over a deck? Looking for ideas & any helpful tips would be appreciated. Love being a DIY!!

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you found this video! Chalk Paint is a fun and easy to use paint! It's primarily used to paint furniture (dressers, tables, accessories, even walls!) There is little to no prep work before you start and so many possibilities when it comes to the look you want to achieve. I have painted a canvas drop cloth before, I even used a stencil to create a fun pattern. It worked great... the only difference is I used this inside as a throw rug. I love the idea as a canopy over a deck but I'm not sure if the paint would hold up in all the elements. I have successfully died fabric with chalk paint (watch this video th-cam.com/video/Iy3IVNjS5aw/w-d-xo.html ) and it has held up in the washing machine. Because I haven't done exactly this idea I can't tell you what the long term results will be, you might get a little colour bleeding or fading over time? I'd suggest a test piece: cut a piece of drop cloth and paint it how you plan on painting the actual canopy. Avoid making your paint too thick, if it's really thick on the surface it may just flake off. Let it sit for a couple days to dry. Iron on warm setting, the heat helps to set the colour. Then throw the sample piece in the washing machine and see how it holds up. I'd love to hear how it goes, please let me know if you end up doing the project!

    I wish I had seen this video before I tried to chalk paint the exact type of fabric!!! All the lessons you mentioned were the same for me and now I know how to scout for undamaged fabric, choose tight smooth fabric not like this with the large pile, and use darker paint than the original fabric- first hand. I was frustrated thinking it was my lack of skill, but since you had the same experience yay it wasn't me!

Since it's too much work to take the entire thing out, the chalk paint appears to be a fine solution although it will definitely take longer. Your presentation and sweet smile made this as easy to follow as any video I've seen.
    The review was extra helpful as well. You're a wonderful & knowledgable professional. Keep up your great work and thank you Deanna.

      Hi Bonnie, Good luck with your RV dinette cushions! Sounds like a large project but lots of people have done entire sofas before so its doable, just may take longer like you said. If you can flip a cushion over you can start with a test patch to see how well it covers, get a feel for the process and decided if you like the results. I didn't apply clear wax in this video because it's not the best option for very textured fabrics, however, on fabrics that have less texture I like to apply the clear wax after the paint has dried. The clear wax seals the paint and gives a leathery feel. I'm glad you found this video helpful and I appreciate your kind feedback :)

    Hi Deanna! Your video popped up on my newsfeed or whatever that is that makes videos pop up. LOL
    I had to click because I once painted all of my furniture in the early 80s when I had absolutely no money and I was just beginning my art career.
    I used flat house paint. The furniture was always a bit scratchy. I had to see what paint you used out of curiosity. I might try this.

    Awesome thorough video, thank you! Would I be insane to attempt a whole loveseat with this technique? It has some kind of soft, low pile synthetic fabric which sounds like it may be an ideal choice for painting, but the cushions are deep and soft which seems like it could take forever to paint (and require lots of paint too)...the original color is a bold medium red and I would like it to be a caramel brown or tan color if possible, but have you done or seen any red upholstery successfully painted? I’m also wondering if I could modify the technique by using the watered down paint in a spray bottle and working it in with a brush, and also removing the cushion covers and submerging them in the paint solution, similar to how you’d dye fabric. Any suggestions would be so appreciated! Thanks again for your great video and channel!!

    Hi Deanna, just found your channel and subscribed immediately! Excellent tutorial, concise, detailed and thank heavens, no crazy background "music"! I just have one question, please. • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christie 1231 thanks for watching and subscribing! I don’t have a specific ratio of water to paint as every fabric is different and you really just need to get started to find the right mix for your fabric. You might want to start by pouring out a small amount of paint, maybe a half cup and add tablespoon of water. Get your fabric wet like I show in the video the give it a try. Adjust your ratio of paint to water as you need, make sure it absorbs into the fabric but not to watery that it soaks all the way through. Please let me know if you have more questions!

    I have painted various fabric chairs and sofas…I painted a cotton flat fabric love seat that had a white background with light blue pinstripes. The fabric only had the pinstripes printed on the top and the underneath fabric was plain white. I thought this would be easy to paint over….nope! 5 coat and 3-4 days -And you can still see the printed blue pin stripes.
    I don’t skip steps as I am ocd! What I realized is that a lot of fabric furniture that you purchase new or used is scotch guarded (water repellent) to protect against pet stains and kids. This is why people including myself are struggling with getting the fabric to take the paint. After much trial and error this is a simple test that I’ve come up with;
    1.) spray a small area of your fabric w/water. If it beads up or sets on top of the surface it has been scotch guarded or protected with a similar chemical.
    2.) if you have painted wood furniture -you know that scuff sanding gives better results as it helps with paint adhesion … so lightly scuff sand the scotch guard off IF your water beads up on surface when you test it on a small area. (Prep work is everything just like cleaning a old dresser with TSP and rinsing the residue off.)
    I know this seem like more of a process but it will save you a lot of time, paint and money.
    I have learned this through trial and error. Hopefully these two simple tips will save someone from the Headaches & frustration of your paint not covering.
