      I tried painting a chair, and it looks beautiful, but its so "crunchy" that no one will sit on it. What did I do wrong? And more importantly - is there anything I can do to save it? But that's just my story...yours turned out great! good video, too.

    • @chiron591
      @chiron591 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Margaret Colasont rub it with a paper bag or a fine sanding sponge. Takes the crunch out. Vacuuming after to get rid of dust.

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Margaret Colasont lightly sanding like chiron591 suggested can help to soften, great tip!! Just be careful not to sand through your paint! As far as what might have gone wrong, in my experience the more you sit in the chair it will start to soften up, however, too many layers of paint or not enough water can create a “crunchy” texture just like the chair in this video.

      Lol, I haven't tried painting upholstery fabric before, but I HAVE painted fabric....I repaint forgotten dolls, more into creepy dolls, lol, and I needed to make one of the clown outfits my dolls was wearing to not be so right and airy, hahaa! So, I just painted it over on one side with black chalk paint and even though the coverage was great, the fabric was VERY stiff. It was fine bc it's a display doll, but I am thinking maybe if I had wet the fabric, it wouldn't have been AS stiff. Next time I need the same outfit but dulled down, I'll def try wetting it first and water down the paint a bit! Thanks so much for this!

    Hi Deanna: I painted a thrifted wing chair in French Linen years ago, and waxed it. The wood legs were dark brown, so I painted them with Provence, Florence and a bit of Aubusson, and distressed them showing more of the original brown, and used silver leafing for a metallic edge. Annie Sloan is absolutely the best and you are too. Nice tutorial and a lot of information. Thanks for a clear, concise presentation.

I'm looking forward to seeing your other fabric painting, as I have a chair with a faux leather seat that my cats have scratched. Watching this and another video gave me the idea to paint the seat.

    We recently bought a used RV. I want to change the outdated gold/velvet on the dinette bench area. Since it's too much work to take the entire thing out, the chalk paint appears to be a fine solution although it will definitely take longer. Your presentation and sweet smile made this as easy to follow as any video I've seen.
    The review was extra helpful as well. You're a wonderful & knowledgable professional. Keep up your great work and thank you Deanna.

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bonnie, Good luck with your RV dinette cushions! Sounds like a large project but lots of people have done entire sofas before so its doable, just may take longer like you said. If you can flip a cushion over you can start with a test patch to see how well it covers, get a feel for the process and decided if you like the results. I didn't apply clear wax in this video because it's not the best option for very textured fabrics, however, on fabrics that have less texture I like to apply the clear wax after the paint has dried. The clear wax seals the paint and gives a leathery feel. I'm glad you found this video helpful and I appreciate your kind feedback :)

Have you ever painted a canvas dropcloth & used as a canopy over a deck? Looking for ideas & any helpful tips would be appreciated. Love being a DIY!!

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you found this video! Chalk Paint is a fun and easy to use paint! It's primarily used to paint furniture (dressers, tables, accessories, even walls!) There is little to no prep work before you start and so many possibilities when it comes to the look you want to achieve. I have painted a canvas drop cloth before, I even used a stencil to create a fun pattern. It worked great... the only difference is I used this inside as a throw rug. I love the idea as a canopy over a deck but I'm not sure if the paint would hold up in all the elements. I have successfully died fabric with chalk paint (watch this video th-cam.com/video/Iy3IVNjS5aw/w-d-xo.html ) and it has held up in the washing machine. Because I haven't done exactly this idea I can't tell you what the long term results will be, you might get a little colour bleeding or fading over time? I'd suggest a test piece: cut a piece of drop cloth and paint it how you plan on painting the actual canopy. Avoid making your paint too thick, if it's really thick on the surface it may just flake off. Let it sit for a couple days to dry. Iron on warm setting, the heat helps to set the colour. Then throw the sample piece in the washing machine and see how it holds up. I'd love to hear how it goes, please let me know if you end up doing the project!

Do you have videos to paint piece furniture and applying a transfer. My question is applying the transfer and using clear coat for seal and wax. I get mess up on those two things

    • @DIYDEANNA
      @DIYDEANNA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do have a video about applying a transfer, I'll leave a link below! In my video I did not put a sealer on the transfer because it wasn't a high use piece so I wasn't too concerned about it getting worn off. I also don't mind on this piece if it wears away a little and looks more distressed. If you want to make your transfer more durable then yes you should apply a sealer. You can use either a clear coat or wax on transfers, I have used both. Since the wax is usually rubbed on you have to be careful not to rub too hard or you can rub off your transfer. I suggest looking at the instructions on the transfer package, they usually tell you what is recommended for that brand.
      Glad you are enjoying my videos, here's the one about how to apply a transfer. Thanks for watching!

    It could have been amazing but...the pointers were there... The type of fabric and the fact it was worn so badly should have told you... But; Thank you for showing us.... Mallorca. Spain.

I have a follow-up question though: I want to paint my bright red armchair in a dark emerald green. Should I use one or two layers of white (or a different lighter colour?) in between or can I just gor for the green right away?

    I was thinking of painting my dining chairs but after seeing this I think reupholstering would be a lot less work, plus prettier! I can easily remove the chair pad and the way my chairs are made is very different than most but It has a fabric covered panel on the front and one on back that I think I could remove, if not cut to fit then pull up edges then add fabric and glue back down. Have you ever tried the spray fabric paint? Just wondering how that works. If so many layers didnt have to be done this would not be a bad way to go especially since you could match paint with wall color!

    • @epavek
      @epavek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used the spray fabric paint. It end up being very expensive. I did a chair with a small ottoman and used 6 cans. The fabric really absorbs the paint which is why you use so many cans.

    Awesome thorough video, thank you! Would I be insane to attempt a whole loveseat with this technique? It has some kind of soft, low pile synthetic fabric which sounds like it may be an ideal choice for painting, but the cushions are deep and soft which seems like it could take forever to paint (and require lots of paint too)...the original color is a bold medium red and I would like it to be a caramel brown or tan color if possible, but have you done or seen any red upholstery successfully painted? I’m also wondering if I could modify the technique by using the watered down paint in a spray bottle and working it in with a brush, and also removing the cushion covers and submerging them in the paint solution, similar to how you’d dye fabric. Any suggestions would be so appreciated! Thanks again for your great video and channel!!

      I have not so I can’t give advice based on experience…. I had a paint student chalk paint hers, no wax, waited a full 24 hours before putting outside and she said it worked well. My only concern would be if something got really soaked by the rain, maybe it would reconstitute the paint and cause it to run. I don’t know for sure. I’d probably bring the cushions inside when not in use. Thanks for watching.

      Christie 1231 thanks for watching and subscribing! I don’t have a specific ratio of water to paint as every fabric is different and you really just need to get started to find the right mix for your fabric. You might want to start by pouring out a small amount of paint, maybe a half cup and add tablespoon of water. Get your fabric wet like I show in the video the give it a try. Adjust your ratio of paint to water as you need, make sure it absorbs into the fabric but not to watery that it soaks all the way through. Please let me know if you have more questions!

    May I ask, I'd it your preference to use chalk paint over another kind of paint for fabrics? Thank you.

      I get a lot of questions from chalk painters about this, they maybe already have some at home leftover from another project and wondering what else they can paint with it. This video shows the versatility of the product, one of the many things you can do with Chalk Paint. I made this video to answer some FAQ’s about the process and to show pros and cons. Fabric paint is a good option too, just different.
