Aww, what an awesome husband. 😊 Were the seats velvet as well or another fabric? Now you have me wondering if my car would look good with pink seats. Hahaha
major tip : brush the paint in with a cat hair brush as you go; the paint brush in one hand and the cat brush in the other. This will work the paint in better and deter the paint from concentrating in areas. Also it will help the upholstery to dry fluffy rather than crusty.

Three years ago, this past Spring I watched your 1st video on how you painted your couch hot pink. Inspired, I painted my couch and matching chair, a shabby chic pale blue. It's been three years, three kids, the hubby, and our German Shepherd ...and the couch/chair are still holding its color. They are easy to clean with just warm soapy water. I get so many compliments, the most recent was from one of my customers 2 weeks ago. She came to purchase refinished painted furniture from me. Ooing and awwing over my shabby chic style. She asked me if she could rent my furniture and decor for her daughter's shabby chic birthday party. Wow! I thought. What a compliment. So it's been three years since you inspired me with that project. Many times in my head I have thanked you, but now, "Thank You Debi! Your ideas and inspirations changes lives and hearts! I know this, because it changed our home and all who enter in." :)
Ok Monique, after thinking about doing this for 2 or 3 yrs your comment has sealed the deal. Hold my beer I'm going in!! I've been chalk painting everything around the house inside and out for several yrs, did my deck pickets black on an oak deck and they are gorgeous and have held up great in scorching heat and snow, 3 yrs and no touch up needed!! Time to wet some fabric..
My sofa and chair came out perfectly, using the chalk paint, wetting the fabric, blending with a sanding sponge, and sanding each coat!! THANK YOU for showing that painting velvety fabric can be done!

+Debi's Design Diary OK. It's February and I'm ready to do this. My chaise is smaller than your sofa- 6'Lx3'W. I'm ordering a 32oz of the black velvet paint and an 8oz tub of the Crystal Clear Chandelier Liquid Patina. Does that sound right? You mentioned sanding in between dried layers - is that different than using the sanding sponge? If so, what grade paper or steel wool do I use. I'm excited to do this and will gladly share results.
This is awesome!! I have some velvet pink chairs that I was going to get covers for but will paint the fabric now. I'm very excited!! Thank you so much!!
This is a wonderful video. I love that you speak fast, give lots of info and are interesting to watch. The music is also a great addition. Some DIY videos are so long and boring. You just want to know how to do it, and the outcome but some people go on and on and on and you just want to pull out your hair as you have to gruel through their story and yak yak yak. So, your videos are just great, upbeat, professional and very helpful. This sofa turned out just beautiful. I use AS chalk paint to paint upholstery and I have been very happy with the end results. I have never heard of the brand you use and will check into it. I also appreciate the tip of using the sanding block to help rub the paint pigment into the fabric. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks.
I've only just seen this , wow thanks! One little tip , since the paint was dilute , you could have used a spray bottle as an applicator , and a new scrub brush (like a shoe polishing brush) to work the paint into the fabric. But nice vid and couch , love the colour!
I tried this on a huge ottoman that I loved! It was like plastic and cracked! I must master this. I love the idea. I’ve saved this. I’m not presently able due to space but WILL!
"That would totally be better." Omg I love you. The facetiousness paired with its plausible deniability shows the profound extent at which your creativity functions. Subscribed.
Haha Debi I love watching your videos. You crack me up!! "If you have thousands of $$$ to spend at Anthropology that would be better, if not- this will work!"
How have I only just found you? I luv you!! You are so real, funny and quirky. I had no idea painting a couch was even an option. I am SOOOOO glad I found you!! I am an immediate fan. I love your stories. Don't change, like a lot of you tubers do trying to be...? well, something. Just not real.
Beautiful color change! I didn't even know you could dye a couch and it be executed without color transfer or water damage to it. Thanks for showing , great job!
Since the paint acts more like a dye, do I need to take the upholsteries initial color into account? for example, if I have a yellow chair and I put blue paint on it, will it turn out green?
Has the color ever come off on someone's clothes? I want to paint a sofa a dark blue (as dark as your green) but I'm really worried about staining guests clothes!
Oh thank you for showing what you sealed the paint with! Will definitely try it. I LOVE painting fabric on furniture. I've tried a few pieces and have them at home, but haven't sealed them yet because I wasn't sure what to use (and didn't really have a need to yet).
I have painted a sofa and chairs before watching any vids. I soon found the crackling and did not know there were any vids so I just started adding water and ironing the couch.....LOL, intuitively. It turned out nicely and I actually sold it. I am in the process of making my own chalk paint and will follow your instructions here. One question, do you rewet the fabric after painting when applying more paint? Thank you for this vid...really gorgeous couch you have there.
Hi rei ~ I WISH I had found this gal's video before I listened to too many other people with upholstery chalk painting videos!! UGG!! Mine turned out just like Debi warned...too thick of chalk paint and now it is hard and crunchy! Glad you have some better intuition than I do and was able to correct your misguided painting instructions before you ruined the whole project!!! Now I have to figure out how to soften the chunky dried paint before I try to finish painting!! Sanding block or soft wire brush, I guess.. And I'd like to know if the fabric needs to be re-wet before starting that second coat, also! But I would think yes. Take care. :)
Yes that's your intuitive self talking and i would also wet and iron...that's what worked for me...do not give up...you'll see, basically you're wearing it down.
Rel, good call! Yes I wet it down every time and worked the paint into the fiber of the fabric so it acts like a dye rather than a paint, you don't want the paint to sit on top of the surface, if it does it changes the texture to a slick or rough surface that will crack and not feel like the original fabric.
Interesting. The "miracles" that can be done with the right knowledge and the right tools are fascinating. I have a Ducaroy Sofa from Manhattan Home Design in a pristine white boucle fabric finish, but if I get bored of white in a few years and decide to change it to an accent color, this technique will probably help me a lot. Thanks for the tutorial.
I am absolutely amazed. I have never seen that done before and didn't know you could actually paint upholstry! It really turned out beautiful! I love it!
@@donnak9258 it might depend on the material, but ive done 3 of these older crushed velvet types, just watered down the dye, painted and sprayed it out let it dry completely and scotchgarded it. No problems. So far ive only done a different shade so i took yellow chair to orange, light blue to darker teal etc. There are tutorials on here try searching it good luck!
I had old patio swing cushions. I heard you could paint them so I just went at it with a can of spray paint. They feel like canvas when you sit on them and they look pretty good. They'll do for now, until next year. I'm happy enough for the time being since I didn't have enough money to buy new ones. I love your work better though. It was beautiful. Perhaps I'll have more time and patience next time.
I can't find outdoor cushions in the colors I need.......I was thinking of using a shower curtain.......if I can't find one, I now have another "customized" option!! Thanks for opening up my imagination!! 🌺 🌺 🌺
Hello everyone. If you want the sofa to be a certain color you have to remember the underlying tone in this case gold...the color of the paint was teal which is a shade of blue green. What happens when you mix blue and gold...you get green. That's why the sofa didn't turn out the same color as the paint.
Not sure colors blend like that when one color is dyed and already dry. Colors can blend and change when both are the same medium. You can’t paint a black car white and get a grey car.
Hi Debi!! After being inspired by your creative Soul, I am painting my first fabric chair TODAY! I have high hopes it will come out as soft and beautiful as your couch has. You are AMAZING! LOOOVEE ALL YOUR CREATIVE SELF!!!
WOW..so glad I saw this. I Just bought 2 grey chairs 25 each..and they are almost mint condition...and CRATE AND BARRELL.... just 1 of the removable seat cushions is faded...and the back side has a rip. ....Cant wait to try this..I have only chalk painted furniture.
a year later, it's in my house and still beautiful with no issues. I had lots of company over the holidays, relatives have slept on it, we've had parties, pets and naps... all good!
My great grandmother had two camelback loveseats that she painted with fabric paint in the 1940s. They’ve been recovered several times since then but I still have them. I might have to try painting them again.

I'm excited to do this and will gladly share results.
hamburger1 So....how did it go?!?
Awesome video! I learned a lot and will try my chair this week!!
This is awesome!! I have some velvet pink chairs that I was going to get covers for but will paint the fabric now. I'm very excited!! Thank you so much!!
Did you paint them? I’m curious how the velvet turned out?
I love that you so show trial and error too. It's never perfect the first time!
u can buy the upholstery tacks that are on a roll - u don't have to measure just roll the out and tack them in with an upholstery hammer

Thanks.
Couch looks awesome!! And you? You're STILL amazing 😀 love what you're doing!! So awesome.
The removal of that skirt made all the difference. Love the new color!
I didn't know you launched your own paint line. That's so cool!
Amazing to see you breath new life into this old sofa. Great effort! Transformed!
I feel like she could be a TV personality
Alchemist Yes
Better yet, she's on the internet, dahling!
God, what's not to love about you Debi! You're my go-to and you just make people feel good!
Okay first of all this looks BOMB, second, you have chaotic aunt vibes and I love it 😂😂
I don’t know how I got here, but I like this a lot. What a pleasant surprise.
You're kind of a nut.. I like that. Nice work!
bahahahah
"That would totally be better." Omg I love you. The facetiousness paired with its plausible deniability shows the profound extent at which your creativity functions. Subscribed.
I would have liked to see the full finished product
+Lolita Antrobus I will have a blog post in a few days with more photos and info :) I'll put the link in the description.
Beginning frames, look at .o8 - .20 that's the finished sofa.
The finished product was shown in the beginning. I can’t imagine why some people seem to have not gotten that?
I would of NEVER thought about PAINTING a couch ! wow very neat !
I'm scandalized! Ripping the skirt off of a lady couch. And I thought this was a respectable channel. ❤️😂❤️
& Treated like a cheap sofa! Where's the *love* seat?
I painted my fabric office chair with leftover wall paint and water. I love it! It LOOKS like vinyl.
😍😍😍😍 Love you to pieces Debbie! I have to paint some furniture now. I am looking at 2 chairs right now. Hugs and 😍, Cathryn
I love your videos! There is no over-the-top, cringey commentary or contrived humor. Your brilliant art is more than enough!
Has the color ever come off on someone's clothes? I want to paint a sofa a dark blue (as dark as your green) but I'm really worried about staining guests clothes!
I’ve painted upholstery with Annie Sloan many times and I’m super excited to try your brand now too! 💞💞💞
WOW! Hadn't thought of painting a sofa!
Take care. :)
Yes that's your intuitive self talking and i would also wet and iron...that's what worked for me...do not give up...you'll see, basically you're wearing it down.
rei Hi rei! Thanks alot ...yes I finally brushed it down and it is much softer, thank goodness. lol But it came out looking pretty nice. :)
Can you paint microfiber or microsuede?
I am absolutely amazed. I have never seen that done before and didn't know you could actually paint upholstry! It really turned out beautiful! I love it!
how about fabric dye?
I've had great luck using just the fabric dye from walmart!
@@casecase6 how would I use it to do a sofa chair
@@donnak9258 it might depend on the material, but ive done 3 of these older crushed velvet types, just watered down the dye, painted and sprayed it out let it dry completely and scotchgarded it. No problems. So far ive only done a different shade so i took yellow chair to orange, light blue to darker teal etc. There are tutorials on here try searching it good luck!
Casey Sloan Thank you for sharing that information 💙
Casey Sloan hi can I use water dye on cloth fabric?
I have painted fabric before but never with this result AMAZING result mine felt like rough canvas brillant found your channel by accident lovely!
Before painting you should wash it ...
Pénélope Eiden In another comment, she said she did.
@S W I would be worried about that.
There are interesting articles on how to de-bug sofas and the household in general with diatomaceous earth, available in the big box stores.

Completely irrelevant but you have like the most perfect hair I’ve ever seen, Jesus Christ.
This is maybe the coolest diy project I have ever seen!
Where do I purchase this paint??? 😲😃😆
i'm in South Africa...could you give us any details of the paint composition ?
Chinonyerem Proud2BIgbo you can find these paints at Jamierayvintage.com
WOW..so glad I saw this. I Just bought 2 grey chairs 25 each..and they are almost mint condition...and CRATE AND BARRELL.... just 1 of the removable seat cushions is faded...and the back side has a rip. ....Cant wait to try this..I have only chalk painted furniture.
is there an update on this sofa?
a year later, it's in my house and still beautiful with no issues. I had lots of company over the holidays, relatives have slept on it, we've had parties, pets and naps... all good!
awesome! I am looking forward to trying this again first time was an epic fail I didn't have a velvet couch.

My great grandmother had two camelback loveseats that she painted with fabric paint in the 1940s. They’ve been recovered several times since then but I still have them. I might have to try painting them again.
When you learn how to clone yourself I'll take a 6 pack!
awwwe
That sofa is the sofa find of sofa finds! Very well done! I haven’t watched the painting part, just love that great score
That's really cute. But I can't stop thinking that no amount of paint is going to cover up 40 years of farts in those cushions.
Same here. I don't even buy upholstered furniture that's new because I find it unsanitary and just magnets for dust.
No Debbie I have never painted a sofa but this sofa is beautiful excellent job I love it so shabby chic!
I LOVE THAT STORE!! Something magical about that place...
Anyway, that couch is gorgeous! I'm here to learn this invaluable skill!
She looks like someone who would put a bird on it
❤❤❤❤❤ I LOVE YOUR IDEA .THIS COUCH TURNED OUT DYN-O-MITE, AMAZING, AND IS ONE OF A KIND--- AS ALL YOUR CRAFTS ARE ❤❤❤❤❤THFS ❤❤❤
Slytherin common room :)
That Bohemian Blue looks emerald to me. I love it!
