This is a great advice - glad to see this old advice still being passed around. I have done my furniture and rugs this way for many years, and the Clorox 2 is great; in the old days I used something they don't make anymore because it is super toxic - Clorox 2 is better. The key is the rinse in the end, that soda (carbonated) water and vinegar at the end and dry absorbent (cotton) rags at the end to do the final clean up with. Super important.
I cleaned my upholstery dinning room chairs. Your video was so helpful, I'm cleaning almost everything that need cleaning. I even clean my mattress. You are a lifesaver. Great Video.
I am on bended knees to you. I have two chairs that are covered in linen someone got chocolate on it. I searched for two.months trying to find someone to clean it. I however used water and dawn big mistake. Anyway cost me $115.00 for.one chair. Then I found you! Yesterday I actually got spaghetti sauce on one of the chairs. Attempting to clean a beautiful old fashioned couch today. You are an inspiration! Thank you for posting your video. Cheers, Francine from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Canada
THANK YOU!!! What sold me on this was the fact that you said your family owned a Professional cleaning and upholstery business! I take professional work seriously👍 I got all the supplies and I was SO happy with the results! It worked just like you explained step by step. I hope I can load the photos of before and after. I think the stains were dog vomit🤢 gross, I know!!! But I tried everything even steam Cleaner which actually SPREAD the stains!! Nevertheless, I am so happy for this educational video. Thank you once again! I will only use this method for future upholstery cleaning👍
Thank you so much! Your method saved my fabric headboard - I had previously treated only the stained area and thereby increased the size of the stain 🤦 Your method was cheap, easy, and required no special equipment. Your video is organized, straightforward, informative, no bs. Thank you very much.
This has saved me!!! I’m telling you people, This Works!🎉 I had my white couch in storage and the movers did not cover it properly. One side was exposed and got really dirty. I saw this video and followed the instructions, and never looked back. Forever grateful ❤❤❤❤
This did miracles for our car's upholstery, too, as well as the carpets. YES! THANK YOU! Tip: we had carpet inserts on top of the floor carpets. Those, I washed and drained a couple times in our shower, then used the same technique. Amazing refresh. Wish I'd known this years ago. 🙂
Thank you. I’m moving and my husband wants to keep his favorite couch. I didn’t want it because it’s filthy. I look forward to cleaning it now and make it look brand new!!!!❤ I’m very grateful!
Just watched this video today. We owned a fabric couch and then got 3 dogs, which as everyone knows it’s not a good mix. We had no clue how to clean it, but thank the Fabric gods for Rachel Pereira! Our couch is squeaky clean and look brand new. #FabricGoddess #RachelPereira #CleanCouch #CleanUpholstery #CleanPillows #ThankYou
I have to thank you SO much for your video! I followed your concise, easy to follow instructions and my upholstered wing back chair now looks amazing! No change in color to the upholstery. It was really pretty soiled; especially the arms, the headrest area, and the top of the wing (that's often been used as a handrail) :) I should have taken "before" pictures... Thanks again!
Got be so careful of bedbugs on secondhand soft furnishings.....My new mattress ended up with them due to being in a van with a secondhand sofa! Please check it/ treat it as it’s a nightmare to get rid of them.....❤️
Brilliant! I have two beautiful custom tub chairs in a light fabric that got heavily soiled over time. I was considering spending a small fortune to reupholster as I never thought I would get them clean, but I tried your method to the letter and they look like new!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! (And I have a pill shaver on order😊)
Rachel!!!! My new friend!!! Oh my goodness...you have made my day!!!! Had been looking for a way to clean a futon I purchased used and this was AMAZING!!!! Thank you dear heart for sharing!!!! While taking a break, I watched your video about adding doors to a bookshelf. OMGSSSH!!!! Just yesterday I wished there was some way I could add "real" doors to my new bookshelves!!! You are a treasure!!! Thank you! Happy weekend! 💖🌈☺️ Wishing you every success and more!!! ❤️❤️❤️
WOW! I wish I took a before and after pic. I used your method on a light beige ulphostered chair. It's a small bedroom chair, $300.00 and I loved it when I bought it. Over the last couple of years it's gotten dirty on the arms and center of seat. I called a company to have it professionally cleaned and they gave me a estimate of $180.00! I that's more than half of what I paid for the chair. So I went online and watched several videos. All looked good but yours stood out to me. The chair looks GREAT and will look brand new once I get a lint trimmer. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:). ps I had everything in the house except for the detergent/stain remover. I use Dawn blue for many things and used as a substitute. It worked great too.
IT WORKED! Our couches were so gross - white with 2 rough collies and a lot of coffee spills. Our couches look brand new. I am so stunned. Thank you so much for this!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Even though you showed a Scotch-guard spray, I don’t feel like you were trying to sell me anything. So many TH-camrs are trying to soft sell everything now that I stopped trusting them. Thanks for keeping it real!
Hi Rachel. I used your cleaning method today with great success. It is a lazy boy with lots of loose fabric. It was hard to do but ... It was so dirty before and now looks so much better. Thanks, David
Hi. Just came in to say thanks. I have this upholstery chair and it was so dirty I was wondering how to clean it, was a tossup between getting an upholstery cleaning wet vacuum which costs as much as the chair or to clean it by hand. I had this can of 3M Upholstery cleaner for a long time but the instructions were unclear, I had no idea I had to wipe off the dirt. So I followed your video about the hot water, used the 3M Upholstery cleaner and the sparkling water (I could only find lemon sparking water but it worked well and chair smells lemony!). Oh boy, what a difference, so much dirt came off!!!! Thank you from SIngapore! Oh and you're very pretty also!!
This worked great! I was a bit nervous but then figured I had nothing to lose as the chairs would have to get covered or be replaced. So happy with the results. Wish I had done before and after!
I recently delivered a chair to my client and we want to change the fabric to grey, I told her to wait first to let me look for what we can use to clean it. I am glad I stumbled on your channel. I seriously pray and hope it works well. Thank you
This is my first upholstery cleaning video and i am surprised to say that it was very enjoyable and informative! Thanks and i can't wait to try it out.
I used your method today and it worked on my sectional. A lot of elbow grease but well worth it. We have dogs and sometimes they use the bottom half of the furniture for a napkin after dinner. Drives me nuts. TY for the info Rachel.
Thank for making this post. I just bought a recliner and plan to use the tips you gave to make it look brand new. Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!
The carbonated water & vinegar…god damn… Vinegar has been one of my “secret” ingredients for cleaning, along with baking soda, but I never thought about the carbonated water. And the way you explained it… wow…just wow 🤯 Like your smile, this video is a true gem 💎
Excellent information and I appreciate that you use easy to find products. I don’t have an upholstery cleaner and needed a simple approach. Can’t wait to see how my,new to me ,couch turns out.
omg where were you two weeks ago. i have two fabric chairs(covered in 60%cotton/40%linen) someone dropped food (pasta sauce) on one of the chairs seating area. a spot about the size of a dime. i paid $80.00 to have it cleaned after 4 cleaning companies said they wouldnt touch it. i am soooo trying this thank you.
Hello, came across your video and I guess I found the solution to my problem and that's how to clean our couch....I have tried some methods but to my dismay it didnt work...im excited to try your method and by reading the comments they're really satisfied and happy with the results....thank you for this video and i hope i will get this right....
@@Wolf-ct8ny The first part went great - I bought all the items she used, including that little battery-operated pill trimmer. The second part - actually using them per her instructions - I haven’t gotten to yet! 😂 In my defense, I’m getting ready to move and am leaving this until the end because my young kids will get everything dirty again.😏
Hi Rachel!! I’m so happy we came across your video. Hubby and I bought some used Pottery Barn chairs yesterday without realizing how bad some of the stains were. We watched your video, went to the store to buy some of the supplies, came home...we were up until about 1am cleaning the chairs.....OMG!! THEY LOOK LIKE NEW AND ALL THE STAINS ARE GONE!!🤩🤩🤗. Do you have any recommendations on how to get rid of pet stains and smoke odor? Thank you!!
Rachel- Great video. thank you! Was wondering of you have a back up for Clorox free and clear. Tough to find the small size locally or even on line. Thx!
I recently thrifted two beautiful 70s vintage arm chairs with velvet cushions. Have you had any experience with chairs like this? Or do you know how I should go about cleaning them? Great video!
Lizzie Beatty velvet cleans up great and you can use this same method, just make sure to use a soft bristle brush to brush the fibers gently when it’s dry- otherwise it will feel stiff.
So happy I found this video! My grandma has nearly the same ottoman & we’ve been trying to figure out how to clean it. I’ll definitely be trying this method out!
Thanks much for the video. It's a lot of work for me as I can't use my hands like that but I truly appreciate knowing the method. The shaver...wow! I have one too. Again, much needed video. Good job.
Thank you for this great video- question I’m looking to do an overall refresh on my covers- general discoloration in the seated area- if the upholstery covers are removable - would you recommend a simple gentle soak (with hand wash soap) and rinse? spin?
This was great information. I have a couple of questions. 1. Did you skip the step of wetting the back of the chair with plain hot water? 2. Are there different types or “grades” of fabric trimmers? I bought a “sweater trimmer” at my local Wally. I used it to trim my friend’s towels that were full of string pulls. So, I guess now the blade/s is dull. I haven’t been able to find replacement blades or a way to re-sharpen them. My sweaters are full of pills now and no way to shave them! I’d hate to keep buying the same little appliance because it seems so wasteful. Surely somebody makes one that has replaceable blades. Can you help? Thank you for your video; the instructions are very clear, and the results are wonderful!!
Love this video and eager to start cleaning some of my upholstery. Clorox2 Free & Clear appears to be discontinued. Do you have a recommendation on an alternate stain remover? Thank you.
I'm using your video to guide me on cleaning beige tuffed nailhead chairs made of a blend of linen and polyester so far its worked out great I got one chair done im waiting for it to dry to apply the scotch guard. I couldn't wait to try it so i only used one white rag( because thats all i had today) and rinsed it and wrig it. Tomorrow i will try with lots of white cloths and see if it makes a difference on the other chairs I'm hoping that because i used one rag i don't get water marks
Question: I bought an old velvet (velour?) tufted chair that has what looks like years of deep dust/dirt around the buttons of each tuft. What tools, cleaners, method do you recommend for cleaning this? Thank you so much!
hi! wonderful video. i just thrifted some chairs and want to try this method on it. this might be a stupid question, but is flavored sparking water a bad idea? it's all i have in my house. the scent wouldn't be a bad thing either since the chairs do smell like a thrift store. thank you!
In the UK the spray bottles don't seem to have a spray option it just comes out like a hose, result the fabric is very wet, also nothing seems to work on my settee even a vacuum wet and suction won't touch the stains, decades of pushed in grime I guess will not come out in a few minutes !😅
What can I substitute if I don’t have sparkling water handy? Btw, that trimmer is amazing! I didn’t know they sell those! I’m definitely getting one! Thanks for your post :)
Such great advice! Simple, direct and do-able. New subscriber here. Am definitely going to give this a try on a chair that can use a very thorough cleaning. (I previously tried to remove a dark "spot" on a tomato/cherry red chair using Woolite laundry detergent but found that it was lightening the color. I will follow your instructions carefully and KNOW that I will get the results I wanted. Thank you.
holdawait... There is an thing that shaves furniture?! I thought I knew stuff. Now I do. And I want one of those. Also, you said you have "a couple of sitting chairs in (your) living room". What other kind of chair is there? Standing chairs? Kneeling chairs? Laying-down chairs? Only teasing because your video is awesome; I did exactly this and it worked brilliantly: cleaned our "S"-tagged chair brilliantly. Thank you for the explicit, staight-forward video!
wish I would have thought to check youtube before hiring a upholstery cleaner. Spent $80 and now I still have to clean my own chair all over again. Og well, lesson learned
Question - I clean move out, residential and new construction. A client of mine asked if I could clean a chaise lounge. This is a service I’ve never done. But willing to add on.
Hello, my mom has a power lift recliner and Coke Zero or sugar free tea was spilled all over the arm and I thought the best idea to clean it was a immediately putting a saturated paper towel with water and made it ten times worse. There is a huge several inch wide water spot circle thing across like two feet down the whole arm and across the sides and a couple other spots all water spotted. It’s a weird smooth fabric that got wet but I couldn’t get it to try by blotting at all. I think I changed the texture of the arm. It’s nearly new but no warranty. Now I found out the code is S. I called the company and they were zero help and couldn’t tell me what to do. I feel so bad about it! So it is saying no water for code S, but they couldn’t tell me any cleaner to use and I already put water on it. 😢 I live out of state and already left but I need to know what to get so I can go down and try to fix it next week.
Thank you, thank you for posting this video and educating me. I was able to salvage my 2-beautiful dining chairs. They are sparkling like new. Now to teach my son to properly use a napkin and not the chair.😜
Alicia Patterson if it was my piece of velvet furniture, I would do the same process- when I’m extra cautious, i start with the sparkling water solution first to see how much I can remove with just that- then use the stain remover solution and finish again with the sparkling water/vinegar to remove any residue. Just scrub gently as to not damage the velvet fibers. BEFORE it’s dry, use a bristle brush to remove all lint left from the rag and to bring the velvet fibers standing up again- that way it won’t damage them or leave it looking matted when it dries.
1. Spray bottle filled with hot water - spray entire fabric surface till sufficiently wet
2. Spray bottle filled with 3:1 water and stain remover - spray the dirty areas
3. Scrub and remove dirt with white cotton rag - switch to different areas of the rag as you go
4. Spray bottle filled with 2:1 sparkling water and destilled white vinegar - spray entire fabric surface
5. Repeat cotton rag scrub till the rag is clean
Optional: when dry use lint trimmer to remove pilling + spray with 2 light coats of scotchgard fabric protector
What if you don’t have sparkling water handy?
Thank you for typing this out for us! So much quicker than having to rewatch a few times. :)
Thanks for taking the time to type out. God bless you!
Curious, what if the sparkling water is flavored? Will that affect the performance?

This is a great advice - glad to see this old advice still being passed around. I have done my furniture and rugs this way for many years, and the Clorox 2 is great; in the old days I used something they don't make anymore because it is super toxic - Clorox 2 is better. The key is the rinse in the end, that soda (carbonated) water and vinegar at the end and dry absorbent (cotton) rags at the end to do the final clean up with. Super important.

Thank you so much I got a grease stain out of my chair thanks to your advice
Nice touch with the trimmer!
This is a great tip!!! Can I use the first option to clean polyurethane fabric? I have a chair that looks pretty bad😢
Super helpful and motivating. Thank you!
I have some antique chairs that I will try this on. Looks like it may work!
Love this video and eager to start cleaning some of my upholstery. Clorox2 Free & Clear appears to be discontinued. Do you have a recommendation on an alternate stain remover? Thank you.
Thank you!!!! So helpful!! I love cleaning this and your method is absolutely perfect! Keep posting!!
Wow! I was just going to watch and do the same but once your brought out the trimmer I said she deserves a comment and a subscription 😂
This is a great video! This method works extremely well for me!!
I forgot to mention that the chair looks brand new again.
Very helpful. Great video. Now I'm going to do this on my living room couch!
Question: I bought an old velvet (velour?) tufted chair that has what looks like years of deep dust/dirt around the buttons of each tuft. What tools, cleaners, method do you recommend for cleaning this? Thank you so much!
This video needs a ton of views!!
hi! wonderful video. i just thrifted some chairs and want to try this method on it. this might be a stupid question, but is flavored sparking water a bad idea? it's all i have in my house. the scent wouldn't be a bad thing either since the chairs do smell like a thrift store. thank you!
The sugars will attract roaches no flavors plz.
Thank you!! Have you tried it with dark grey fabric? I want to try it, but scared of lightening my couch
In the UK the spray bottles don't seem to have a spray option it just comes out like a hose, result the fabric is very wet, also nothing seems to work on my settee even a vacuum wet and suction won't touch the stains, decades of pushed in grime I guess will not come out in a few minutes !😅
Excellent video! Your expertise is so needed. Please make more videos😃
What can I substitute if I don’t have sparkling water handy? Btw, that trimmer is amazing! I didn’t know they sell those! I’m definitely getting one! Thanks for your post :)
Can you skip the first part if you don’t have stains? Awesome BTW. Impressive results!
Wow! Excellent demonstration! Thank you!!
Love your rug and pillows where from 😅 bought a new home and would love to get pieces like yours 😍
Garcia, Maite thanks! Check out my blog- I often link decor and furniture in posts! Www.shadesofblueinteriors.com
Thank you.
I love this! Does it work with carpets?
holdawait...
Literally saved my chairs in time for Turkey day. Took me about 45 for 8 chairs.
Rachel: Should you always start with the clorox stain remover? If it's overall dusty, can you just use the carbonated water/vinegar mix?
Great question!
Thanks for a great tutorial! Safe for use on polyester upholstery fabrics?
Hi Rachel -- thank you so much for this video. Would you change any part of the process is the upholstery is made with a velvet fabric?
Alicia Patterson if it was my piece of velvet furniture, I would do the same process- when I’m extra cautious, i start with the sparkling water solution first to see how much I can remove with just that- then use the stain remover solution and finish again with the sparkling water/vinegar to remove any residue. Just scrub gently as to not damage the velvet fibers. BEFORE it’s dry, use a bristle brush to remove all lint left from the rag and to bring the velvet fibers standing up again- that way it won’t damage them or leave it looking matted when it dries.
