We're Going to Hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line is a song intended to boot morale of the British Expeditionary Force during the Battle of France. It was written by Royal Artillery Captain Jimmy Kennedy OBE, and composed by Michael Carr in 1939.

My mom was in her 20s and working in a war plant in Montreal, nearly 2,000 miles from her home in Saskatchewan. She told me that while working, there would always be someone humming, whistling and even singing the song as they went about their work. Sometimes it even graduated in the entire line joining in one giant chorus! She sang or hummed the tune often, probably when thinking about those times.
