    Lyrics
    We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day.
    Keep smiling through,
    Just like you always do,
'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.So will you please say hello
To the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long.
    They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go,
    I was singing this song
    We'll meet again,
    Don't know where,
    Don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again,
    Some sunny day.We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again
    Some sunny day.
    Keep smiling through,
    Just like you always do,
'Till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away.
So will you please say hello
To the folks that I know,
Tell them I won't be long.
    They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go,
    I was singing this song.
    We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again,
    Some sunny day.

My great grandfather on my mother's side was a Canadian soldier during WW2. Served in the 7th infantry division from 1942 to 1945, stormed Juno Beach, was shot three times on that beach, barely survived and rejoined his unit once he was strong enough to pick up his rifle. He fought until the war ended and when he came home, the first thing he did was dance with my great grandmother to this song. I remember him asking to have this song play while he laid on his deathbed. This song makes me both sad and happy. Sad because it is a beautiful and powerful song, but it reminds me of a truly great man that I wish I knew better. But, it makes me happy because I know why he wanted to have it play when he passed. He wanted it to play, because he wanted to remember and relive the moments he had with his wife and with the men he served with.
Thank you Great Grandpa for fighting so I could be who I am today. Rest In Peace.

I just showed this video to my 97 year old neighbour, who was in the Canadian Navy during the war. Of course she remembered it. She started singing along, and tears came into her old eyes. She was 19 in 1943, fell in love with a sailor, and this was their song. It was very touching to watch her remember.

This song is a dirge. It is not a happy song. No one should be smiling. The folks singing it here, are to young to understand, and with luck never will.
But it was not ironic. It was self conscious defiance. American air crews were dead the day they reported for duty and most of them knew it. They day they would 'meet again' was in the great beyond were it always sunny.
I am sorry if this shocks you. But it's time we actually grew up and faced reality.
Note : I single out America Air crews, not to detract from any one else, but because of the use of daylight bombing and its impact on attrition rates. Few survived the required missions needed to earn points to go home.
And everyone knew it. Planes could be replaced faster than crews so crews had to be used up.

Some of his stories were horrific, romantic and truly British, used to tear up when he was talking about the friends he lost, as much as I slightly hesitated, he insisted. Sadly he has passed away now, but plane his friend flew was on display at Duxford for some time.
