Drei Lilien [German soldier song][+English translation]

  • The Lilienlied seems to have originated only around 1830 as a song from old fragments, and was first sung by students in Heidelberg, Jena and Göttingen. Probably after a drinking originated mix of older songs from Thuringia and Saxony; also in Swabia, on the Rhine and in Upper and Lower Hesse known and still much sung. Melody and large parts of the text come from the hunter song "Es blies ein Jäger wohl in sein Horn".
Blooming flowers on the graves of early deceased are mentioned at the end of many songs. According to ancient folk belief, the souls of the departed loved ones passed into flowers (lilies).

    Drei Lilien, drei Lilien
    die pflanzt´ich auf mein Grab
    Da kam ein stolzer Reiter
    und brach sie ab.
Mit Juvi valle ralle ralle ralle ra
    da kam ein stolzer Reiter
    und brach sie ab
    Ach Reitersmann, ach Reitersmann
    lass doch die Lilien stehn
    Die soll ja mein Feinsliebchen
    noch einmal sehn
Juvi valle ralle ralle ralle ra
    die soll ja mein Feinsliebchen
    noch einmal sehn
Was schert mich denn dein Liebchen
was schert mich denn dein Grab
    Ich bin ein stolzer Reiter
    und brech sie ab…..
    Und sterbe ich noch heute
    so bin ich morgen tot
    Dann begraben mich die Leute
    ums Morgenrot
Juvi valle ralle ralle ralle ra
    Dann begraben mich die Leute
    ums Morgenrot.
    Ums Morgenrot ums Morgenrot
    will ich begraben sein
    da schläft ja mein Feinsliebchen
    so ganz allein
    (anderer Schluß:
    dann kann mich mein Feinsliebchen
    noch einmal sehn)

I taught high school German for 17 years. I had one class of sophomores, mostly boys, who loved singing this one on Friday afternoons with gusto. The French teacher across the hall would slam her door shut when we got going. I think the song is much older than the two World Wars. It likely dates from the Romantic Period in German literature from late 1700‘s to mid 1800’s. Themes of soldiers leaving a girlfriend to go off to die in battle were quite common. Remember that there was no united German Nation until 1871, so the different German states struggled against each other as well as against Napoleon’s armies. There wasn’t much peace in those days.

    • @stephenscull901
      @stephenscull901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +110

Indeed, I just checked. This is listed as a Volkslied. The text is from the 1830’s. There are several verses. The overall message of the song is the Stolzer Reiter( the proud rider), a metaphor for death, which has no respect for the lilies. At the same time, it reflects the resignation of the soldier to death, and being buried at Morgenrot(the red of the morning at dawn).

I'm not a German nor am I some kind of Veteran Soldier, but this song is just so happy and cheerful that I've pretty much gotten attached and fell in love with it so easily while listening helplessly to the beat that literally has the same Tempo as the Epic Marching of Soldiers which makes this song a hundred times better, and I simply found this song because of a meme I saw on YT about Girls and Boys having their behaviors or reaction compared for wearing the same outfit where this song starts playing when a bunch of German Soldiers Marching appeared in the video. *German Marching Music is truly the Finest in the World.*

The Germans have an incredible talent to turn melancholic & romantic songs into cool battle millitary marches. :-)) People who do not speak German would never guess that it is about a grave with flowers, sweetheart girl and what was done to them one brave warrior - in other words, everyone can die at the end. But such people would think that the soldiers' choir was singing something life-affirming, joyful, brave and martial.
For example I have noticed that the majority of people (although I can no longer guarantee that it is majority) in our country and in all countries, especially those hard hit by the WW2 (or Great Patriotic War in our country), still believe that all German military marches and songs only talk about war, Hitler, invasion and how the Wehrmacht will smash everybody to pieces! And no one has any idea what romantic lyrics there really are!

I was in the 5th Army Band from 65-68 and one of our Warrant officer band directors used to do German Marches. He came in at the tail end of WW2 but had no problem with German marches. One of the commanders of 5th Army when I was there, a WW2 vet, loved “Lili Marlene.”We did both in German and English

Damn I remember reading a diary from a Hitlerjugend Member who lived in hildesheim (my homecity) during the war. This song is a primary theme that follows him through the years 1941-1945. Even the book is named after a passage of it, „Da kam ein stolzer Reiter“.
Basically at the start he needs to write an analysis about this song in his school. He interprets it that the lillies are german citys and the rider is destroying them as an analogy for the bombardments.
In the beginning, 1942 it‘s just a nice analysis, his teacher gives him a A (or a 1 in germany) for that. The following years are pretty happy because Hildesheim was not bombed till 1944.
On the 22.3.1945 he witnesses the Firestorm of Hildesheim where british bombers reduced it to rubble, 90% of the Altstadt (like the core area) is destroyed, Hildesheim is burning.
The diary ends with the words: „In the end, the rider came and brought destruction“

That sounds so sad :( Even worse when cities were unharmed until 1945 but weeks or days before the end they get destroyed to a moon landscape.

    • @JS3E
      @JS3E ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@dr.ludwig Yes it‘s truly sad. Hildesheim was such a beautiful city with a lot of old Fachwerkhäuser. Because the Fachwerkhäuser were made out of wood, the city still burned for days after the initial bombing.
What‘s even worse is that Hildesheim had no important infrastructure that supported the war. Like no factories that produced weapons, tanks etc or a large amount of soldiers. The bombing was meant to break the morale of the germans.
