    Sometimes a cheap camera will shock you with how good it is. This 80's Canon AF35ML is a surprisingly great shooter that takes very capable images.

    This was my fallback camera, worn on a breakable chain around my neck to preclude strangulation, during serious photojournalism in Asia back in the '80s. Its autofocus worked when my eyes were blinded by tear gas in demonstrations, it never ever failed me, and when my trusty "professional" Canon 24mm 1.4 came in half in my hand as I prepared to shoot a large group of men carrying guns, assembled for the image, the AF35ML saved the day. That image ran banner above the fold in a Sunday "Philadelphia Inquirer." Nobody EVER complained about film from this camera.

    Awesome camera. I've shot one for about 10 years and can't remember anyone turning around and looking because of the noise. If you shoot it enough you get use to it and really enjoy the feel etc. It's a good camera if you want to take great photos. It's addictive.

    I owned one from 1986 to 1999 and took some great pictures ...one of the best point and shoot from Canon

    Just saw this! My hidden gem contribution is the Minolta Riva Zoom 135EX (will have another name in the US) - use only at the wide, or at a push up to 50-60mm , and it gives cams costing 10x it a run for their money - coupled w XP2 Super, I have never seen such detailed and almost 3D rendering of textures.

    The Nikon L35AF is a great camera and fun to shoot with. It was released during the same time period of the Canon AF35ML.

    I got my hands on a Minolta Hi-Matic AF-D. Haven't got my first rolls back yet but seems very similar to this camera.

      Yeah seen a couple of shots of it. Look very similar, let me know if the pictures turn out good.

    I use a Ricoh 500RF I stick it in my bag and use before and after work. it's a great camera, cost me £18. I also try and alternate between that and the Canon Demi EE17, which cost three times more. But both a great size and affordable

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuart Herrington never heard of the Ricoh but sounds promising. I've always wanted to try the EE too.

    I just disassembled one of these which was just lying round my dad's garage so i could use the lens as diy macro lens. also, it tuned out that it is a 'limited edition' variant that goes as high as 1000 iso and with the mechanism that adds date stamp. im jus wondering if i just destroyed a collector's item lol

    Nice video! Maybe its a stupid question, but how would you compare this camera to the Olympus Trip 35? I'm torn between these two thought I know they are completely different and serve different purposes... but which one would you go for?

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the trip. The AF is loud AF on this thing.

  • @tapiopitkaranta7667
    @tapiopitkaranta7667 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love everything about the clunky, crappy design of that camera, I hope I can find one. I have a couple of Olympus zoom point and shoots and they are both excellent. I also have a Yashica T3 and I feel the focus is a bit more hit and miss.

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tapio Pitkäranta same. I had the T3 and the focus wasn't great, Olympus has much better AF overall.

  • @aperturecollect
    @aperturecollect 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Under rated tool in my opinion. I have 5 of them and I think 4 of them were about $20 each. 2 of them looked about new when I bought them and had the original cases with them. You get use to the noise and enjoy the camera after a while. Remember that's a 1:1.9 lens.

    • @devontayman3584
      @devontayman3584 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can I buy one!

  • @MikesVoyagesAndDrives
    @MikesVoyagesAndDrives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Well, I guess the days when you could buy the camera for $5 are over. Here in Europe, you can rarely get them for less than €50 on eBay. If you want to try a good and very cheap camera, try the Olympus IS-3000. It's available on eBay here in Europe for about €20. The camera has a very good lens and is well made overall.

      It’s crazy, 5 years ago I would of skipped this camera because thrift/second hand stores had so many of them. I’ll have to look at that Olympus.

    Just got one for $5! When I turn it on the flash does not seem to be working /: little reluctant to put a roll in it. Have never used a point and shoot and I don't want my film to get crumpled. Great review man!

    I love my Ricoh FF3. It's a clunker but takes really good pix. I Just picked up Olympus Infinity. It's not the stylus. It's a small Brick with auto flash that doesn't turn off. Has a 35mm 2.8. Gonna drop off film later but won't be able to see them til I come back from Austin trip. Btw, where's a good place to take photos there?

    Any ideas on how to clean one that has had battery corrosion. I cleaned the battery terminals with apple cider vinegar but did not get any noise. You think it’s dead or should I try adding more vinegar deeper inside?

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use an eraser on a pencil, it’s the safest way to do it. Wear gloves if you can. Could have corroded the wires but try that first.

      @naracruz5778 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pure_Glee 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@naracruz5778I just got one and it was a little corroded, I’m gonna leave it over night to see if it’ll clean with vinegar. However it seems that the internal battery connector in the camera has a part that is flat and loose compared to the other side (positive inside) which is bouncy.

    I like the aesthetics actually. The noise is eehhh but shit man even professional plastic fantastic canon slrs have noises like that. Lens good, aesthetics pretty Leica-y slick. Noise I’m used to already from my canon film eos t2 but is annoying. I think I’ll be looking for this to give to the young siblings on walks

  • @ffrreeddyy123456
    @ffrreeddyy123456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hey sorry to ruin your 69 comments, but i am watching your video to figure out how to make mine turn on. the dial knob thing wont turn to on or bc, and my finger nails wont grip it enough to know if its ceased up from rust or something or if i have to put film in it? i put batteries in it to see if that is the key

    • @ffrreeddyy123456
      @ffrreeddyy123456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just reliezed i moved it. but its still hard to move! when we press a certain direction or apply force in the wrong area, it seems to cease up and only turns when the right force is applied in the right area.

    • @ShawneeUnion
      @ShawneeUnion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would try dripping some 90% isopropyl alcohol along the edge of the dial. Like 2-3 drops max, and let it seep in a bit. Could be that the dial is a little gunked up and needs to be loosened.
