    I am a real estate Photographer, this camera Canon AE-1 Program was a given to me yesterday as a gift by homeowners who wanted to thank me for helping them sell their home. The camera is literally in mint condition. Very grateful and thankful.

      I just bagged one for 120 quid it's fully functional,mint condition and came with a bunch of accessories like flash guns , lenses , viewfinder B so you can look down into the camera rather than forward it's like a little periscope thing and got the screw in shutter button on a wire too along with various lense covers , over the moon is an understatement

    My grandpa gave this exact model of camera as a present to my mom and her brother like in the early 90s. They just passed it on to me. I’m super excited to start snapping photos of the family so that I can one day pass them on to my children. Thank you for your tutorial. It took a lot of the guess work out of it!

    I just picked one of these up for $40 earlier today! 9/1/22
    Didn’t come w/ a battery and no department stores had any in stock. So I negotiated the price down to $40, leveraging the fact that I couldn’t test any of the functions. The mirror was clean, the light seals weren’t disintegrated, hardly any cosmetic scuffs and it was clean af. So i took a chance. Put a battery in it and BOOM it came to life! All the dials and buttons work properly. Haven’t had the chance to run film through it yet. Fingers are CROSSED! It’s going to be my first experience w/ a film camera, coming from a Sony a6000 w/ a Sony G 18-105mm f4 and a 7 artisans 35mm f1.2. Wish me luck!

    My grandpa had a film camera that he gave to me but it was broken without him knowing and a friend of mine gave me his to try out and was broken as well. Long story short the local photo shop owner gave me his old AE-1 program for free and also all the bells and whistles for it to work and I didn't even have to pay $100 out of pocket for it. I'm glad that I have one now and can't wait to develop my first roll of film soon.

    I just got one of these handed down that was my grandma's many years ago. It hasn't been used in a very long time, so this was a useful reference for hearing what the shutter should sound like. as much as I've seen about this model potentially having shutter issues, mine sounds like it should be okay. I just dropped off my first roll of film I put through it to see how the results look. I'm anticipating there will likely be light leaks

    Great you enjoy using this body. My main film bodies for years were A-1, T70 and T90. I have also used AE-1P but was underwhelmed by it. The T70 is functionally similar but has an incredibly easy to use exp lock button which AE-1P/A-1 also has but is slow and inconvenient in comparison. The T70 also has a partial metering option which saved me on many occasions.

    The AE-1 was the camera we used in the Army CID. It was a strange beast with its shutter-preferred system. It also wouldn't tolerate rough handling and had a very delicate lens mount compared to the beastly Nikon construction. But, the optics were excellent. The AE-1 replaced the far more expensive and bulletproof Leica and Rollei cameras. I remember turning those cameras into the PDO (Property Disposal Office) only to see them begin destroying them. They drove a #2 screwdriver through the lens and film back with one whack? Reason? Flooding the market with so many cameras was detrimental to company sales. Although I doubt the taxpayer would understand.

      You can use any 35mm sometimes referred to as 135 film. Color or black and white. The palmist popular one nowadays is Portra 400 by Kodak. Just make sure it’s 35mm/135 film. A cheaper option would be colorplus 200. My favorite black and white film is Tri-x by Kodak and Hp5 by Ilford. By locally if you can otherwise b&h photo has the best online prices. Avoid Amazon. It’s a rip off.

    • @forsterl.stewart414
      @forsterl.stewart414 ปีที่แล้ว

      not too easy, you need to remove the entire top off the camera, then slide then pin out..avoid it if you can... unless you are good at fixing things.
      if you live in the UK, i will fix it for free if you have a new door ( they are hard to find )

    So I just purchased this camera. Unfortunately I am having trouble with the original lens. I can't get the cover off the bottom of it. I have looked for multiple videos and can't find any that are helpful, or that show the original lens. I was wondering if you had any tips on how to get it off?

    Hi. A question.
    When I use the light meter it only changes when I change the speed, but not when I change the aperture. I can have an exposure at 1.4 and 1/250 and the light meter shows me the same exposure as 22 and 1/250. It only changes when I change the speed.
    The light meter only works properly when I press the stop down lever. There you can see when the aperture changes in the lens and there the light meter varies with speed and aperture.
    Only the lightmeter changes and recognise the aperture and speed shutter when i press depth of field button.
    Do you know why it is? my lens is a fd 50 1.4

  • @jaredjds2011

    So I get that you set your ISO depending on the film speed you’re shooting, but how do I know what my shutter speed should be to balance it? Just guess? I know people now days use light meters but how’d they do it back then?

    • @DaveMontejano
      @DaveMontejano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. I’ll try to answer it as best I can.
      First with this camera. This camera has a built in light meter so it will tell you, or if using the program mode will choose these settings for you. That’s for this camera specifically.
      Now if we go back a couple of decades there was an era without light meters. So there were rules that you went by depending on the light that was available. For example the sunny 16 rule. Or the f11 if it’s cloudy rule just to name a few. These rules made it easy for situations where the light was plentiful. This was also the era of one use flash bulbs. These usually came with a guide for recommended settings for a certain distance away for the camera. It wasn’t always perfect because sometimes folks would misjudge light and distance but for the most part things were ok.
      Now if we go back even more to the beginning of photography, there was a time when only professional photographers had cameras. These folks used cameras so much that it was easy to judge light by sight and make the right decisions. Which is a skill that could be developed in any era of photography. You take so many pictures that you begin to have a feel for what settings to use with trial and error.
      I hope I didn’t fall of track there and that answered your question. Let me know if you have anymore.
      Thanks for stopping by!

      VIIVI H well the battery button for this camera should be beeping sound. Not sure which camera you have. But if the battery is dead on this camera then you can’t fire the shutter and the film advance lever will not open all the way.

    You put your film type onto 400 asa. Is this what you use most often?
    Also the lens on my AE-1 is slightly broken, I’ve never used it (so I don’t know if it still works). What lens would you recommend I buy for it that’s good for all round jobs.

    • @DaveMontejano
      @DaveMontejano  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you would set the film speed to what film you are using. For example, Porta 400 you set to 400. Ektar 100 you set to 100. Buy a 50mm. It’s the best all around lens especially when starting out.
