3:47 "Is this death metal?" Not only is this death metal, this is OG death metal. Besides Possessed's Seven Churches (which coined the term "death metal"), Death's first album is considered the genre's pioneering album. This track is from their 5th album, Individual Thought Patterns, after they'd evolved into progressive death metal. It's amazing to think that the same band (really the same guy, Chuck Schuldiner) pioneered two different metal genres. Anyway, Hoglan is definitely one of my favorite metal drummers; you should definitely check out his work with Testament and Strapping Young Lad too.
I think it's crazy that Posessed and Death practically both came up with the term separately at the same time, the demos Death Metal and Death by Metal were made pretty much at the same time.
Possessed didn't coin the term. There was a compilation with Running Wild, Helloween, Hellhammer, and Dark Avenger that came out well over a year before Seven Churches. Death's first album is an important first album in the genre, but not one single album created the genre; it was a multitude of bands "pioneering" the genre. We might as well say Venom was Black Metal because of the album/song name -- but they aren't.
Yes it's OG death metal, but as Death evolved their music became its own thing so I don't blame him for asking the question. Towards the end they started playing almost something like technical thrash with death metal vocals. Like I said, Death really became their own thing.

This song is perhaps a bit more straight forward than some other songs Gene has played over the years but he's one of those drummers that is on so many records you can basically find examples of him playing anything that's remotely related to metal and basically owns the shit out of any of the styles really.
Fantastic... He may not have been interested in blasting very often, but his technical approach and fluid movement around the kit is something to be inspired by.
Other Gene Hoglan excellence: His pioneering thrash metal drumming in Dark Angel ( oh yeah, he wrote not only drum parts, bur most of the music on ALL of the other instruments, AND played almost ALL the other instruments on the recorded tracks on the albums). Gene was playing so many beats, patterns, fills, polyrhythms, and novel instruments for new sounds, before many drummers playing metal today were out of diapers, before some were born. Many things that are common in tech and prog metal today didn't exist before Gene Hoglan brought them to metal for public consumption. Up until recently he not only wore boots, he would play warm ups, and the first five or six songs WITH ANKLE WEIGHTS ON! Try it sometime, play his stuff in boots and ankle weights. Dethclock, a TV show about a death metal band that is... hilarious. But cool metal. His videos and instructional recordings, where he talks about the fact that when he is not playing or practicing with one of the metal bands he is in, most of the music he plays is Funk, and he is by the way, it's a fantastic Funk drummer. He is currently in a band called Testament. Testament is one of the original thrash metal bands from the Bay Area that helped found and pioneer the earliest days of thrash metal. They were more progressive than most of the other thrash bands of the time, and they have always retained that ability to bring other influences, especially jazz and some classical, into their music. Testament's last two albums, which have featured Gene Hoglan on drums, have been in my opinion their best albums of their career.
Legend has it during his days in Death Angel, he wore leg weights to ensure he was properly warmed up for the 1st half of the set. Apparently, so I'm told, he used "alternative" items on his kit, such as a hovercraft fan blade and an artillery shell casing.
Met Gene at a Testament/Anthrax concert in New Orleans (my first ever show) and he signed a show used stick for me. Absolute humble person and he’s super light hearted!
Understand that the founder of this band, Chuck Schuldiner, passed away nearly 20 years ago. This band helped found the genre of Death Metal, but by the third album they were moving away from Death Metal and more towards a progressive metal sound, which also had not yet really been created. More importantly, understand that Gene Hogan created this drum part for this song in the early 90s when it was recorded. In the early 90s nobody was doing what this band was doing and I had not heard any drummer doing what Gene Hoglan was doing at this time. It seems like solid metal drumming now, but at the time it was written it was completely Innovative relative to everything else that was going on in the metal world at that time. And, at the time this was written and recorded much of the music world was wearing flannel shirts, and playing Ultra simple grunge tunes
Nah dude. Death wasnt really moving away from death metal until the last album. Everything else was was still firmly death metal but incorporating new elements with each album. Also cynic and atheist were doing similar stuff around the same time
it's been great watching your channel explode, great personality for it. I've been streaming and I often find myself commenting on my gear changes in the pursuit of "good sound" which is doubly weird since we're not talking drum gear.

To answer to your question : Is it smooth death metal or is it death metal at all? Actually, Death is the first Death Metal band, that's where the name ''Death'' metal come from !!
Ok, so who have we got in line next? In terms of death metal I'm thinking Pete Sandoval (ex-Morbid Angel), Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy), Sean Reinert (Cynic). Or an absolute thrash metal classic: Dave Lombardo (Slayer) :)
Also Adrian Erlandsson during his days in At the Gates (e.g. th-cam.com/video/0QlW7DNuOwI/w-d-xo.html), Martin Lopez during his time in Opeth (e.g. th-cam.com/video/U67VBZwdJtg/w-d-xo.html), and Petter Karlsson (Correction: Richard Evensand) during his stint in Therion (e.g. th-cam.com/video/r9ZuXiQtxeU/w-d-xo.html).
Death was quite a special "band" or basically Chuck Schuldiner playing musical chairs with a pool of really good musicians who are incredibly influential and who are very much well acquainted with jazz music. Probably metal drummers are much more into jazz than jazz drummers into metal, or at least that's my perception. It wasn't only Death. It was also all the related bands and projects. Sadus, Cynic, Atheist, Gordian Knot, Control Denied. They might not be so well known, but they are quite groundbreaking, especially in terms of bringing metal and jazz closer together.
I loved Atheist..Unquestionable Presence is great. Death, Cynic, and Atheist were extremely influential to myself as a guitar player, because of the fact that I was really into jazz improvisation and odd time signatures, but also loved Florida death metal from that time...good shit!
Oh God yes. Although my favourite video of him is the Hail Murder one at Wave Gotik Treffen. No technical stuff, just nonstop, mindboggling blistering speed. 280 bpm for four minutes straight.... Love it.
Death was going more progressive at this point in their career. Just because you're not doing bomb-blasts at 210 bpm doesn't make it any less metal. Gene is a beast of a drummer and a cool guy to boot. A role model for any musician.

What an awesome Drumming🤘🤘🥁🥁‼️
Exactly, there’s no triggers..just old school metal drumming and huge dimension of balls. 🔊
Marco R. Huge dimension of balls??? What?
I know this is old but I seriously enjoyed this reaction. Love your personality!!

Not sorry to necro this comment because, Andy.

Absolutely love this, you have got to do some more Gene Hoglan videos, he is the ultimate metal drumming mercenary because he's drummed for a crap ton of awesome metal bands throughout the years.
"This is hip" not something I ever thought would be used to describe Death.
It's exactly what should be used to describe Death. Hip.
Gene Hoglan, one of my favorite drummers, saw him live once and he is INSANELY accurate
5:26 "He's not running out of ideas" - Ofcourse !! Its Gene Hoglan one of the TRUE MASTERS!!
Gene Hoglan is a living legend, he's been going hard for decades. Skeksis is probably one of my all time favs.
Evolutionary sleeper by Sean Reineart (Cynic)

Thiiiiiissssssssssssssssssssssssssssss X 3

Sunless Rise - Recovering The Truth Drum Clip
YES PLEASE
Cynic - Adams Murmur is better
Or Uroboric Forms
This song is actually on of my favorite songs rn. And btw love your content.
This song is perhaps a bit more straight forward than some other songs Gene has played over the years but he's one of those drummers that is on so many records you can basically find examples of him playing anything that's remotely related to metal and basically owns the shit out of any of the styles really.
Fantastic... He may not have been interested in blasting very often, but his technical approach and fluid movement around the kit is something to be inspired by.
legend and one of the Top 10 in Metal, hands down 💀
Gene is without a doubt one of the sickest people to ever sit behind a drum kit he can play anything
Other Gene Hoglan excellence:
His pioneering thrash metal drumming in Dark Angel ( oh yeah, he wrote not only drum parts, bur most of the music on ALL of the other instruments, AND played almost ALL the other instruments on the recorded tracks on the albums).
Gene is a beast. One of my faves in metal. I first saw Gene with Brandon Smalls on the Dethklok album and became an instant fan. Liked and subbed
He also plays with ankle weights for the "slower" double bass songs then takes them off for the fast ones
matthew renfro THANK YOU for mentioning this!!!
Hoglan earned the like, your description earned the sub. \m/
oh i got one for you, "the gardens all nighters" by the number 12 looks like you
Yes!
Yo thanks for your killer tutorials.
Carrying the flag and putting some goddamn respect on these drummers who have gone underappreciated for way too long. Cheers!
Gene is Death Metal Vinnie Paul basically.
Legend has it during his days in Death Angel, he wore leg weights to ensure he was properly warmed up for the 1st half of the set. Apparently, so I'm told, he used "alternative" items on his kit, such as a hovercraft fan blade and an artillery shell casing.
You mean Death, he never was in Death Angel
We need some black metal !!!
Exercises in Futility V - Mgła (Dumcam)
Hey, I just discovered your videos and I've already seen a couple of them, I recommend you react to something from the first two Megadeth albums (Killing Is My Bussines... and Peace Sells But Who's Buying) the drummer on those records was a Jazz drummer too! Anyways cheers from Argentina
Met Gene at a show and such a humble and good dude. One of the greatest of all time
To answer to your question : Is it smooth death metal or is it death metal at all?
Actually, Death is the first Death Metal band, that's where the name ''Death'' metal come from !!
I'd say possessed were the first
Tronci most people consider Chuck Schuldiner the godfather of death metal. He never liked that name though
@@patrose7742 yeah but possessed released music before Death and it's very death metally
Possessed was the first death metal band. Then Death and Pestilence came shortly after. They're all amazing bands
Watched strapping young lad 22 years ago in Melbourne for the 'City' album tour. Never seen a gig anywhere near as good since. Gene is a beast.
"Robotdick in my face" got me giggling :D
I could listen to Death - Symbolic just for the drums! Love his enthusiasm and creativity in every track I’ve ever heard him on!
Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan! 🤘
The amount of times I listened to this song and other death songs when I was younger is just unreal haha
There is a reason they call him " the Atomic Clock"
Mr Gene Hoglan brother!!!!! Sick drummer and sick band!
I didn't think I'd like this, but was pleasantly surprised! Cool vid dude, I like your insight.
I play death metal..black metal..and fusion.. I like the fact that u dont judge the music but more on the technique and power of the player
Jared Klein - Rivers of Nihil. There's a nice playthrough of Death is Real.
This is such a fantastic piece of old school death. His drum phrases on the bridge like parts and the end are incredible.
Check out his Strapping Young Lad play through of SKESIS. 🤘🏼😏
you are correct - Old school HEAVY HITTER !!
If you enjoyed this, particularly as a jazz drummer, I think you might find some stuff to really dig into with records from Atheist.
In fact, here, give this a go: th-cam.com/video/9JaH0TbSxR4/w-d-xo.html
I loved Atheist..Unquestionable Presence is great. Death, Cynic, and Atheist were extremely influential to myself as a guitar player, because of the fact that I was really into jazz improvisation and odd time signatures, but also loved Florida death metal from that time...good shit!
Not enough videos of Steve (or any Athiest) drumming
i love how you are getting more happier as you go with more reaction vids
How about a Nils "Dominator" Fjellstrom reaction?
yeah, i wanna see that too. And Bobby Jarzomber (Peppered cancer and school)
Oh God yes. Although my favourite video of him is the Hail Murder one at Wave Gotik Treffen. No technical stuff, just nonstop, mindboggling blistering speed. 280 bpm for four minutes straight.... Love it.
Love thsi dude, humble and delivers
Just continuing my campaign for Lille Gruber
yessss
i caught DS live last year, blew my fucking mind!
Yessssss continue it
I also requested him via mail tho
Really enjoying your channel! Keep it up
Cheers from Canada
"Is this Death Metal?" Yes, Progressive Death Metal to be more precise.
@Johnny Dong prog tech melo speed death metal
One of the best, if not THE best drummer in metal!
Death was going more progressive at this point in their career. Just because you're not doing bomb-blasts at 210 bpm doesn't make it any less metal.
Gene is a beast of a drummer and a cool guy to boot. A role model for any musician.
Todd Williams, this song is very fast. It’s written so brilliantly that you only feel the speed when you count along to it and try playing it.
Yaassss! Thank you 🙏 😁 Love Gene’s drumming, got to meet him when he was on tour with Zimmer’s Hole, just the coolest dude, super chill! Definitely check out his other groups especially Strapping Young Lad! Also check out Billy Rymer from Dillinger Escape Plan, he does a play through of Prancer on Drumeo which really showcases his mind boggling style!
Requesting that you take a look at Maciej 'Darkside' Kowalski from Mgła. /watch?v=wcsTJ1n2jkE (Good video from Brutal Assault Festival 2019)
Also, on your comment on drumming in combat boots - look up Pete 'Commando' Sandoval from Morbid Angel. He got his nickname because he always plays/played in combat boots.
Also, also, Death is the fucking truth!
HAH - just sent him an email with the same recommendation. Residual Blight should also be mentioned in here. It's fucking insane.
Thanks for reviewing Gene! Great song. Inventive Metal drummer.
Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan!
This song is a piece of history.
Nice vídeo, great reaction.
Dude... Check out Ken Bedene of Aborted, anything from Bryce Butler, and Nick Yacyshyn of SUMAC.
gene hoglan is the embodiment of metal drumming man.
the mix is kind of funny how the bass ''solos'' come out compared to the original
Love watching your channel! Keep up the awesome!
You should react to Jamie Saint Merat, he's a beast of a drummer...
Maybe if we compare his slow grooves and fills to Chad Wackerman then Garrett will take notice.
YES! Definitely one of the best technical death metal drummers out there
ULCERATE 🤘🏽
I love your videos man! ;) Keep the coming and thank you.
"he's playing in combat boots?" Just wait until you get to Hellhammer...
Gene is a beast, his parts through strapping young lads - skeksis are unreal, the syncopation is perfect
