The "pad" with the drumhead on it is a Korg Wavedrum. It is electronic, but it's not a trigger-based solution. It takes the actual tone of the drumhead and processes it to make different sounds. This means you can play it with hands, brushes, sticks, mallets, etc and get completely different sounds. It's a really cool unit.

It's the ability to insert a fluid fill inside of an utterly ridgid time structure, it's not a constantly wavering time due to a drummer's variance without a click vs with a click.

His power and physicality are crazy good for his age. 58 isn't really "old" these days, but it's still pretty damn unusual to be doing what Danny does here at nearly 60. Most drummers will experience something of a drop off in some facet of their game once they reach their late 40s to early 50s (akin to how someone in their mid-to-late 30s will often begin to noticeably drop off in combat/contact sports) but Danny is still killing it and doing so much better than a lot of aging drummers....

Žiga Petrič I’ve seen some debate about it. The beat isn’t strongly anchored. It does feel more like syncopation to me, with evidence such as it flowing naturally out of 4/4 at 5:57. I guess it also depends on how used you are to beat displacements. Gavin Harrison does it sometimes, for example. In his case they’re definitely syncopes (at least a temporary offset which invariably returns to normal), and if you don’t anchor on them they hit you again and again.

I love watching drummers' brains turn to mush trying to figure out the time signatures/polyrhythms. It clicks, then they smile. Every time. It's great.

If a reactor doesn't mention Danny's time signature in the first 30 seconds of him starting, I start judging like a British aristocrat looking at a roofer from Mississippi who just walked into the study and interrupted tea time

This is BY FAR the best reaction to Tools "Pneuma". No Bullshit, just honest and well-founded criticism about the drums.

I believe what you're asking about @3:09 is a Korg Wave Drum, Danny refers to it as "the toilet seat" and yes it's a programmable electronic drum.

@@Salomon_G Before you go running your mouth on the internet. You should fact check shit.
"Maynard is currently the only person on ears and he is using JH Audio earpieces with Sennheiser G3 transmitters. For Danny we have a left and a right stack of two d&b Q subs and a single top. Justin has two d&b M2s in front of him and one J-Sub with a single J8 top to the left of him. Adam has three d&b M2s in front of him and a J-Sub with a single J8 top to the right of him."
"We were actually playing live. It's a sad thing when almost every band you see isn't playing doing that, it's the clicks and backing tracks that are keeping time. I've never played to a click on stage in my life..." -Danny Carey
Again. Only Maynard is using an IEM. Idk what is in Danny's left ear but it certainly isn't a monitor. You would know if you watched them try and hold the end of Descending together.
