  • On Father's day weekend our family made the short trip over to the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, IL. We had the chance to ride a passenger train led by the Chicago & Illinois Midland (C&IM) No. 31, from the Museum into downtown Monticello, then out to White Heath and back. It was a hot 90 degree day, but it was fun.. (FYI, They run steam engines every 3rd weekend of the month)

They don't put the rideable flatcar behind the diesel locomotives they run there. But they do put it behind the tender of the Southern 2-8-0 " consolidation type " steam engine they run. Which I really enjoyed last October when I was there. Some kid said to his parents, " We're right behind the coal car." I wanted to correct him and tell him that steam engine doesn't burn coal, it burns fuel oil. Also, it's not a coal car, it's called a ' tender'. Which holds both its oil and water needed to run the locomotive. I kept my mouth shut, thinking it's not my place to correct this kid in front of his parents. Didn't want any trouble with them.

It was great meeting you guys Saturday. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you long due to trying to help a lady get M &Ms out of the vending machine! Always great meeting a fellow rail fan!

Likewise. I guess we have your wife to thank for the shirts she had made for you and your children. Otherwise, I wouldn't have guessed who you were. I'm in my late 50's and have four adult children. I was with my oldest daughter and her fiance at the Railroad days. She is the only one of my children who show any interest in Trains. My other kids find it boring. They don't know what they're missing out on. Lol.
