This song is Neil Peart's (drummer & lyricist) modern adaptation of Twains original story.
It's about young men like you and me, & how we navigate our way through todays world.
    "Todays Tom Sawyer".
The location was a recording studio in Quebec Canada, where Rush (Canadian band) recorded a lot of this album.
The studio, Le Studio, is no longer there.

    • @erikthompson619
      @erikthompson619 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Well, not exactly an adaptation of Twain's story. Neil started off from a poem by lyricist Pye Dubois, of Max Webster fame, reworked it a little and fit the Tom Sawyer reference in there because he simply thought the character fit in there attitudewise. It's kind of confusing to anyone who is not Neil Peart.

    • @TheRandalltex
      @TheRandalltex ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@erikthompson619 Yes agreed on the Dubois influence 100%, but the opening line & song title, for me at least, cements this as more an adaptation from Twain than anything. I'll go 70/30 :)

Tom Sawyer is an icon. Rush’s song begins, “Today’s Tom Sawyer…” so it’s not about the old Tom Sawyer, it’s embracing what a modern Tom Sawyer might be.

Rush is one of the greatest rock trios in the world and their drummer Neil Peart (RIP) was one of the greatest drummer's to ever live earning the nickname "The Professor" because no matter how good a drummer was Neil could take them to school and teach them new thing's also he played drums with clinical precision.

Rush has over 150 songs, and most of them have deep meanings, or tell a story. Tom Sawyer is one of the few where the meaning is more abstract. I've been a Rush fan since the 70s, and I still am not really sure what the song is supposed to mean, except maybe describing some guy. Mark Twain wrote both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. This song was recorded in Le Studio, up in Quebec Canada, and I'm pretty sure this video was taken while they were actually recording the song. Great reaction, man! I hope you check out more Rush!

The lyrics are from a poem by a friend of Neil Peart's, lyricist Pye Dubois of the band Max Webster. ( Another awesome Canadian party band, led by Canadian Icon; Kim Mitchell )
It's basically about a modern day rebel, but a rebel without a cause.

    • @markastoforoff7838

I think the song represents a young man growing into his own and finding his way. Learning about what the world is really about and how to fit into it. He's a warrior, or at least he thought he was but going out into the brave new world he has to carve his way,

His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. Welcome to the world of Rush….they began in the early 1970s, and only ceased to exist as a band in 2020 after the drummer, Neil Peart (aka The Professor) passed away. Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Geddy Lee (bass, keys and vocals) didn’t want to continue without him. It’s almost a prerequisite for Canadians of a certain age to love Rush 😉😄

Your "Pie Dubious" was actually Pye Dubois (pronounced Doo-BWAH), who cowrote this song with Neil Peart, the drummer. Also, "prog" is short for "progressive rock." The video was shot at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, Canada, where this and many of their other great albums were recorded. It is sadly no more, and last I heard, the grounds are being prepped for the building of a new lakeside residential complex. And it's just Rush, not "the Rush." But as was said before, welcome to the Rush Rabbit Hole. It is by far the deepest rabbit hole you'll ever fall into. But I say that with reverence for these 3 irreplaceable music giants.

    Here's the lyrics
    A modern-day warrior
    Mean, mean stride
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    Mean, mean pride
Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
    His reserve, a quiet defense
    Riding out the day's events
    The river
What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift
The world is, the world is
    Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide
Today's Tom Sawyer, he gets high on you
And the space he invades, he gets by on you
No, his mind is not for rent
    To any god or government
    Always hopeful, yet discontent
    He knows changes aren't permanent
    But change is
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit
The world is, the world is
    Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide
    Exit the warrior
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    He gets high on you
    And the energy you trade
    He gets right on to
    The friction of the day

Peart used to say that once he got through this song how it came out indicated how the rest of that day or show's performance was going to go---it was that challenging to him, even after years of playing it.

Tom Sawyer was an protagonist in the book. He was the wildcard always in trouble. The singer was comparing himself to Tom Sawyer. Rebellious and won't align with anyone. The Spacey invasion was upon us back then. Star wars, Star Trek, Lost in Space, David Bowie with his Ground Control to Major Tom and Billy Thorpe with Children of the Sun. Rush jumped right in the mainstream and did their thing. The singer for Rush was a perfectionist who was seen throughout his career railing inept Roadies and their drummer is considered 2nd best drummer of all time behind Keith Moon. Neil Pert was truly an amazing drummer. Billy Thorpe who performed Children of the Sun died to soon . That song is bad ass.

As far as your opinion that Moon is better than Peart, that is really debatable and certainly not a certainty as you present it. Moon was wild and thunderous and certainly not afraid to take risks while Peart was meticulously clean, savvy, and deeply learned. They both belong in the top 5 of greatest rock drummer of all time, but more often than not, Peart is listed above Moon as his actually drumming abilities exceeded Moon's.

Your statement is inaccurate. Rand was an influence on Heart's lyrics on his first couple of albums with them, but after "2112" he quickly grew disillusioned with the selfishness inherent in Objectivism.

I've never seen anyone comment on the video itself, so I will. As a (hack) musician who has seen the inside of many recording studios around the planet (due to related technical work, not my own talent!) I can't think of another video that really illustrates a typical multi-track recording process, where some parts are laid down with the musicians playing together and then other parts (e.g. Geddy's vocals and keyboards, Alex's solo) are overlaid before the whole thing gets mixed together. This confuses some reviewers as to even how many players are in the band. I'm a bit surprised since multitrack recording has a history going back more than half a century to pioneers like Les Paul.
I have often wondered if this video was actually filmed during the recording session since it doesn't look like a lipsync. The match-up is perfect to my eye/ear.
However I guess what we're seeing here is just top-level musicians who were more than able to play along with their own recording. (Duh.) A lot of drummers might ad-lib their fills more, making it hard to match the recording perfectly but Peart was one of the most disciplined, intentional and precise drummers in the biz. I'm sure he would have no problem playing the exact same fills, to the milliseond, as many times as filming required.
I did a little reading online and found a snippet where Alex said he totally winged the solo. However he did do five takes and the final version was knit together out of these, so that settles my long-held curiosity about the possibility that the video was shot during the actual sessions. Anyone has any further deets - I'm still curious.
The miracle of Rush was of course that they would use multitracking in the studio like most modern acts, but then manage - without backing tracks or additional musicians - to deliver a live experience in which nothing was missing. This was sometimes accomplished in part with Alex or Geddy using the Moog Taurus foot-pedal analog synthesizers so that Geddy could play keyboard parts, or to play some of the sounds with their feet that might've been played with fingers in the studio.
Final comment: I've always been a fan of the power trio format. No room to hide, no slack, no fat to trim... and no room for me. 😂

Google generation, hunffff! Never read Mark Twain, I´m not north american and readed all books in english. That is so dumb!. Tom Sawyer of Rush doesn´t have any relashinship with book, is just a reference in the way that the life of Huckleberry Finn lives and that we cannot follow the rules

  • @t0dd000
    @t0dd000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is "cancelled" because it's hard to teach in grade school since it uses the N-word etc. Teaching it takes a good teacher and mature introspective students. It's a brilliant book. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is even better. One of my favorite books.

The book has nothing to do with this song. They use the name "Tom Sawyer" to represent today's youth (or the youth of 1982, can still apply to today). His mind is not for rent, to any God or Government.

It's just Rush, but The Clash is The Clash. Tom Sawyer was released in 1981, and you're on the right track with Twain and Huck Fin references.
You may have heard some of this song, pieces of it, in a few movies taking place in the 80's. And in some movies from the 80's.
You should look into Riding the Storm Out by REO Speedwagn. I think you'll appreciate it as well.

great reaction the video was filmed in quebec its basically a story about a modern day warrior or everyman in search of fulfilling the richness that life has to offer but that as a free thinking mind that all the popular paths in this live make that not a viable option so they basically have to pave their own pathway to get all the richness that life has to offer. the song was written by geddy lee and alex lifeson and neil peart in collaboration with paul phillip woods mainly which are members of the band except for paul. was recorded in late 1980 and was released in early 1981.

Bearing in mind this was the 80's, I think the song was about the modern youth breaking away from following their parents career path, dad's a cop, son become a cop, dad's a machinist, son becomes a machinist. The modern youth were deciding their own path in life, thinking for themselves, a lot of women wanted something beyond mother and housewife. Their "mind was not for rent, to any God of government. Again, choosing not to follow in favor of creating their own path.

Check out the "graphic novel" video version which includes lyrics. The graphic novel format provides greater clarity on the narrative of the lyrics.
