  • Here's another Rush song for you guys. I'm sorry it's taken me 11 days to post another Rush reaction. I just didn't want people complaining that I am posting too many reactions of the same band. Although, I'm enjoying Rush, so it doesn't matter what people think. We have listened to Tom Sawyer and The Spirit Of Radio so far, now we've got YYZ.
Here is my first reaction to Rush - YYZ. I hope you enjoy it!

I love that version! I have seen a lot of bands live, but Rush was on a whole different level. No opening act. A 3-hour show with an intermission in the middle. And damn, they were note-for-note perfect. I feel blessed to have been able to see them what few times I did. I really miss this band.

It is Y, Y, Z ('Yizzed' is just a joke). Watching this live in Rio is an experience (do it on your own, if you must, but DO IT) ... EVERYTHING Rush does is spectacular!! La Villa Strangiato is another instrumental that is outstanding. 2112( Twenty-One Twelve) is a long one, but it tells an entire story and is worth the time. Rush sounds different in every era, but is always identifiable as Rush ;-)

In Canada we pronounce it YYZED like you do in Britain.
That was Geddy and Alex at the end jokingly calling it Yez.
Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a licensed pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy ad Neil heard the indicator code for YYZ (Toronto International Airport)
    and it stuck with them.
The first part of the song is YYZ in morse code.
La Villa Strangiato is an incredible instrumental by them.
It is based on a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had especially when they were on tour. Please react to the Official music video.
    2112 is another masterpiece.
I would suggest watching the comic book version to get the whole storyline.
Working Man LIVE IN CLEVELAND will blow your socks off!
I just turned 70 this year and yes I ageee our generation had the best music and were spoiled for choice.

Everything Debbieplato5107 said above is right on the money. I wish I paid more attention to Rush growing up in the 70's and 80's, but at least I, like you am getting to finally rediscover them now. It sucks Neil is no longer with us so I'll never get to see them in concert so I'll just have to settle for playing their albums on my old Pioneer SX780 through some big old speakers that I can feel in my gut.
Just an incredibly talented group whose music will live on well after we're gone as some of the best ever.

@HEELMACHINE L take. Prog Music is great. it's awesome. But lot of of rap is great and very catchy even if it's cheap to produce. All genres has its greats and terrible music. Even prog has some crap. I listen everything. Metal, Punk, Rock, Rap, Trance, Pop, and Worship. It's not hard to find something objectively good even if you don't like it.

    • @HEELMACHINE
      @HEELMACHINE 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@doublewhat07 Rap has its place in music but not as popular as it is….. I don’t think the popularity of it is organic…… rather socially engineered. Music industry doesn’t make money selling albums anymore due to free internet. Fact is music acts are not as great as in the past because more money is made from samples and computer generated music. I learned that from a producer “Rick Beato” that has his own channel. Not as many people involved in the recording process. I’m not that much of a prog fan as much of it is too mechanical sounding but Rush does it right.

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's airport which was Home for Rush, and they would say zed. The repetitive rhythm at the start of the song is morse code for YYZ It is Y-Y-Z not yyz that was a joke at the end about people saying what is yyz. That was Alex and Geddy talking in the end.

I was 14 in 1984...a girl I knew gave me a copy of a Rush album to listen to before she left to tour Germany. A week before she gotback I still hadn't listened, but I wanted to give an honest review. So I listened to the entire album for two days. I'd never heard anything like it, before or since. There have a been a few bands that made my love of music grow beyond what I expected...like the first time hearing the Pixies, or Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, or David Bowie, or even the Pogues...but there was nothing like Rush. So many songs are worth a deep dive that its challenging just to pick one. This one was a good pick...legendary...but even their weaker songs are moderately amazing. The truth is, even if you really do envy people who saw stuff like this live...we also envy you...because there is no exact replacement for the first time you hear it. Although I love Rush, I will never be young and hearing it that first time again, it has already permanently changed what I expect from a song. Your journey is just beginning...its really we who envy you. Enjoy every second of it.

I first saw Rush at The Glasgow Apollo in 1978; they blew my mind then. And they still do every single time I hear them.
I recently walked into a shop east Fife, Scotland, to the strains of a live version of Xanadu.
I immediately exchanged Rush pleasantries with the shop owner before going with my friend to start buying local produce.
Before I could get back to the counter?
    ‘Damn,’ I thought initially.
The door opened and a bustle of excited primary school children came in with their teacher.
Andy, for he was the proprietor, announced ‘hey kids!’ ‘What’s the most important day in December then?’ Of course I expected them to holler ‘Christmas!!!’
No, they all responded in unison ‘2112, Andy!!!’
Hell, my jaw dropped and I have rarely been closer to tears of joy in my entire life.
A whole generation of Scottish kids are now growing up listening to Rush. Because of one band, and one man.
Hats off, Andy, wherever you are now.

As much as I like Lee and Peart's performances in this song, I'm all about Lifeson's work.

Dude, I was born in 66, I appreciate your videos and your appreciation of music from "my" time. I did grow up in a wonderful music era. 1977 was an amazing year for rock n roll, really wish you could have been there and seen it. Imagine everyone in the audience focused on only the music, no one had phone's recording or flashing constantly. It really was wonderful. Todays "music" is NOTHING like it used to be.

I was 14 when I saw my first concert ever in '77. It was in Chi-town at the old Comiskey Park. It was called "Summer Jam" and AC/DC (w/Bon Scott), Aerosmith, Foreigner, and Mahogany Rush played. "Rocks" came out not long before so "Back In The Saddle" was pretty new at the time. Angus was jamming on either Malcom's or Bon Scotts shoulder's, I don't remember. He was possessed playing on his back, driving everyone crazy. Foreigner was absolutely brand new to everyone so that was cool. I was looking for an exact date earlier and I guess Walter Magnet & Steel Egan was also there but I do not remember him at all. I guess even the weak $30 a "lid" Columbian poopie weed (4% thc) still did its job :)

Getting older with music is sort of a spiritual thing with me. Like, I've been listening to YYZ for 43 years. It floored me the first time I heard it and it still speaks to me every time. The composition mixed with all the memories gives me a feeling I can't fully define. But it is joyful. And it's like that with all my favorite music. I hope you have the same experience in the future with the music you love now. I dig your enthusiasm. Hello from Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

Torontonian here ... Radio here in the 1980s was essentially infused with Rush as a mandatory ingredient. You couldn't go a single day without hearing at least one of their songs. It was pretty great, especiallly anticipating their new releases and how they'd change up their style. And they changed it up with every single album.

There is so much to love about Rush: their willingness to evolve over time, the deep lyrics mostly written by Neil Peart, their sense of humor expressed in their stage sets, Geddy Lee's unique voice. But most of all, the fact that they were three virtuosos on their respective instruments who together formed a synergy that always inspires the reaction "I can't believe there are only three guys in this band". For that reason, I really think they are at their best during instrumental pieces and sections of songs (though I do love Neil's lyrics, and I can't imagine life without them). We are so lucky that these three monster musicians were so humble that they could stay together for 40 years and give us so much of their talented music. My only reaction these days is "thank you Rush."
