I can't decide if I like Neil Peart or Keith Moon best, but both are my favorites. Neil was a fan of Keith also.

I first saw RUSH in January 1979 at the Spectrum in Philly. BLONDIE opened for them that night.
Very fantastic drummer But there was one drummer better Buddy Rich who went back to the big band Era And And Buddy Rich was Neil purt idle

The Professor nickname came about because Neil Peart was, in addition to being one of the best drummers to ever do it, a very intelligent self educated man, very smart, and his lyric writing reflected that. Rush was known as "the thinking man's band", largely, because of him. RIP Professor.
In the 60's, John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Ginger Baker (Cream), Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Keith Moon (The Who), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge) ... were the rock drummers that changed the art of drumming forever.
In the 70's, Neil Peart of Rush took their influences and set a new standard of drumming w/ his innovation and creativity... and he still gave props to drummers of the 70's like Bill Bruford (Yes/ King Crimson), Phil Collins (Genesis) and (later) Stewart Copeland (The Police) and Alan White (Yes)... Neil Peart even studied jazz and electronic beats, as well as African rhythms and world music to bring to Rush's music.
I believe Neil Peart earned the nickname 'The Professor' in Rush because he apparently resembled actor Russell Johnson, who played the role of 'The Professor' in the TV series "Gilligan's island"... and probably because he was so brainy. The members of Rush were intrigued by how many books he read on tour... and how knowledgeable and opinionated he was.
It was no secret that Rush were a trio of geeks who shared a weird sense of humor together... Most rock bands would party after shows and hook up w/ women... but Neil, Geddy and Alex would just go to their hotel rooms and watch TV.

Seen Neil Peart twice with Rush in the 80's. One of the best ever, also John Bonham, from Led Zeppelin. Thanks for sharing!
Neil Peart is considered to be one of the best drummers in its genre, he passed away some years back and Rush is no more but Rush was active from 1973 until.. well, around 2014-15 something like that, Neil died from brain cancer in 2020 I think it was. They had some really big hits in the 70´s and 80´s. Great band, thanks for the video :D
I first saw Rush when they opened for Kiss in 1976. I soon became a Rush super fan. And never gave Kiss a second thought, lol.
I love how Donna's face lit up when she saw the size of Neil's kit.

IMO, there are 4 Next Level Drummers, Neil, John Bohnam (Zeppelin) Solo: Moby Dick, Danny Carey (Tool) poly rhytmn Master : Checkout "Pnuema" Live & Buddy Rich, the Original Drum Master (He actually had a Heart Attack while doing one of his Solo`s & He finished anyway). All of these super elites have videos on youtube for your viewing...The Swing Portion of this Solo is dedicated to Buddy Rich, Neil`s favorite Drummer!

Yeah this man was something else! Saw Rush 2 or 3 times, absolutely great!
And he also wrote Rush' lyrics.
Rush never were in scandals or whatever. A band of friends and decent people.....and 3 ridiculously good musicians.
Usually people go pee or get a drink when a drum solo comes....not with Neal Peart!

Neil was always looking to learn more. He would glean other drummers' styles and blend them into his performance.

The professional on the drum kit!!!!! He is the professor of drumming. His inspiration Came from the late, great Buddy Rich.
This isnt just a drum solo. This is actually a written song/piece. It's called "Der Trommler" (the drummer). I have the sheet music for it, and after drumming for 55 years (I'm 62), I cannot play it. 1-I don't have near enough drums...2- I don't have near enough skill.

Many moons ago when I was a young drummer around age 16 a friend told me about a band called RUSH
I went down to Watts Music in Novato Ca. and purchased some album called 2112 Then proceeded to drop the needle on a very long song by the same name. Holy moly, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from the drummer ,I was hooked
i grew up thinkin the Professor was cause of his talent but it was indeed an old nickname cause of Russel Johnson aka the Professor on Gilligans Island.

Never heard the Gilligan's island reference, Neil was a very intelligent man and also wrote most of the bands lyrics. With both book and drum knowledge, he became the professor. Watch the opening song for this concert Overture, will tell you the other members nick names.
Wrap a thread around your finger and tie that thread to a small nail about 30 inchs long and then shove the nail into a hard apple. when you toss it give it a slight pull down to your open hand. Its not foolproof but with a little practice it should land in your hand every time. Just FYI, it won't work as well with a watermelon.🙄 Good luck. Cheers 😎
Brian R here from Michigan. He is known as the professor because of his immense skills as a drummer and percussionist. Many drummers have been influenced by his talent. Plus he wrote over 90% of the band's lyrics as well.
I'm definitely not comparing Tommy Lee to Neil Peart but check out Tommy's drum solo and his drum kit that is on tracks and rotates in the air.
Neil Peart's Drum Solo....Last poll I saw Neil was listed at #3 all time great. In the early days Neil would get off the band bus and ride his bike as much as a 100 miles into town. In later years he had motorcycle. Although he would talk to people on the bike rides he was actually kind of shy and did not come out from behind his drums until the last show. They were always touring. RIP
Glad I got to see him before he passed away, a very talented man.

Second best drummer I ever seen but if you want to see the fastest drummer there ever was Buddy Rich and he went back to the big band air check out somebody rich with a speed you'll blow you away N Buddy Rich was Neil purt Idle
I still have a hard time watch The Professor. He's considered the best rock drummer ever and who doesn't extend that into the best to ever sit behind a drum kit. The man was simply on a level beyond others reach. Aside from all of that he was a better man than he was a drummer. The pain he went through with losing his wife and soon after his step daughter. Those losses darn near killed him From what I read, he got on his motorcycle and wasn't heard from for 3 years. Then there's his writing not only lyrics for RUSH songs but the books he wrote. For a man of his caliber, talents and sheer humanity to be taken with brain cancer is still heartbreaking. R I P Professor. We all miss you.
