  • Mega Man is best known for his games on the NES and the X series on the SNES and PS1. But, the Mega Man games on Game Boy are the ones I probably played the most as a kid.
And they left an impact on me, too - when I started Stuff We Play a few years back, taking a look back at the Mega Man games on the Game Boy was one of the first videos I made. But I think I've improved as a TH-camr over time, and I felt like it was time to finally give these games a proper deep dive!
This is RETROspective, the series where I look back at the games from my childhood to see how they stack up today. Today's video: The Weird Mega Man Game Boy Games - a look at Classic Mega Man 1-5 on Game Boy, the Mega Man Xtreme games, and even the Mega Man game for Sega Game Gear!
    Time Stamps:
    Intro: 00:00:00

Didn't understand until recently how rare GB MM 5 was, and how lucky I was to get that for Easter of '95, since that's not only my favorite MM game, but probably my favorite video game of all time, if I had to pick.
I really wish MMGB got more respect, especially when talking to someone who thinks P-chips originated in MM7.

While Xtreme 1 is a pretty barebones affair, Xtreme 2 is one of my favorite games in the franchise.
For one having an MMX game on the go made the first passable, but 2 had playable Zero with bosses from games where he either wasn't playable or couldn't fight (most) bosses. The part system let you make things as easy or hard as you wanted, it gave you a dedicated boss rush mode where you could start with full armor or go in fresh, including a second one with the bosses from the first game so Zero got a shot at those too. Zero actually got his own armor upgrades in Xtreme 2 as well despite that making no sense.
Iirc it was also the first game in the series to let you switch characters in real time during a stage outside of the one per stage Zero switch in X3. While the portability factor is a moot point now, I'd say Xtreme 2 is definitely worth a try.
It's kinda funny that Wily's Revenge was my first MM game and in retrospect after this video, it's probably the reason I always disliked the classics for most of my childhood. X4 was the game that got me hooked on the series but Xtreme 2 was my second favorite non Legends game until Zero 2 came out. Still is come to think of it, nothing pre Zero series is as fun to me as Xtreme 2 and X4 despite the high quality of so many games in the franchise. Also Xtreme 2 has the least aggravating ride chaser section in the series I think which is certainly a point in its favour.

I can confirm that Rockman Shadow & Quint aren’t one in the same as in the translations for Rockman & Forte: Mirai Kara no Chōsensha, Rockman Shadow refers to himself as an prototype of that self upgraded. Plus he only came into the rise of power in that timeline Quint was from because Mega Man was no more (since that Mega Man became Quint)
But on a side note, Mega Man V is one of my favorites from the Gameboy series. Love the soundtrack, the new robots, all of that.

I think I had one of the GB games briefly when I was very young. I say briefly because my parents got it for me when the only other Mega Man game I had played was X1, and I was very confused by how different it was and I didn't like it. Not sure which one I had--I thought I remembered fighting Guts Man, but he's not in any of them, so *shrug*.

I really liked Megaman Xtreme honestly... It was kinda surreal seeing entire MMX levels and bosses in 8 bit form! I really like that kind of thing... Also, if you use an emulator, you can set the Start button to Dash and map it to a shoulder button (or a free face button on the controller if you prefer) and voila! Dash-jumps are a thing again! But I have to agree on Xtreme 2, although it's even more impressive than the previous game, it just doesn't click as much, and isn't as much fun to play... In large part because Zero sucks in it...

Nice video, Jamie. I didn't know that much about the GB MegaMan games outside of knowing they existed, so it's nice to see someone's take on it. I played MM2 growing up but I really like the MegaMan Legends games because they have more of an Action RPG feel to them. They have good stories and comedy, almost with an Anime-style feel. Got in a huge mega man binge lately, and I stumbled upon this video! It seems I haven't noticed you in my sub box for a while, so hopefully watching this in full will fix that on YT's end. Definitely a good time and I've been replaying the GB I-V lately as well. GB I was my first full MM game ever, after bouncing off 64 as a kid, and yeah, it definitely is an extreme in difficulty. I just thought at first "oh, that's why they say Mega man is hard", but now after having no problems clearing 1-8/10/11, I easily think MM1GB is waaaaay tougher than even 9. The sprites are just too darn big, and I'm glad they fixed that in later games, lol
Xtreme on 3DS is a bit of a funny story too: I remember the GB MM games got bulk revealed for the 3DS VC, and they'd release them in chrono order but push one to the front of the line depending on a vote for Mega May: I eagerly voted for Xtreme 2, but was fine with everything else... Except Xtreme 1. Which won the poll as most desired MM GB game, so it got released first, LMAO. I think that was due to people expected it to be more of a portable MMX game than it really is, and compared to Xtreme 2 (which I personally dig due to all the fun content and replay value), it's pretty buggy in spots too.
Also, congrats on coming out! Noticed on twitter for a long while, but I just noticed in this vid that it was the official debut.

My only nitpick with your awesome overview is that you acknowledged MMIV's improvement to Ring Boomerang finally giving it a reason for existing outside of bossfights, but didn't give 2 and 3 credit for similar improvements over their NES counterparts (and MMII needs all the credit anyone can scrape together)
In II, Leaf Shield is altered so that when thrown, the 4 leaves each get knocked out one hit at a time, meaning you can actually hit Airman with it through the tornadoes (well, barely). In NES 2, it may as well not be his weakness, AFAIC.
My favorite tweak to III, even more so than Shadowman's newfound weakness to Gemini Laser, is that Spark Shock is finally useful outside of Magnetman, Airman, and Bubbleman's fights: you can actually paralyze enemies with it, then switch back to Mega Buster and slaughter 'em, great for taking on the bigger opponents in the MM4-insprired stages!
Also, although Mega Man/Rush Spaceship only use it in final cutscene, the end of II is the first time he's absorbed the power of a WilyMachine, right? Makes it seem like he should've also absorbed Darkman's power in NES 5.

Megaman 2 gameboy has my favorite soundtrack of any of the classic series, the pitch is bad but there’s patches to fix it. I got used to it over the years so I don’t mind the high pitch anymore. The compositions are amazing, but the developers didn’t know how to convert it to the gameboy soundfont properly when the composer sent the ost over so it’s super horrible with the pitch.

Extreme 2 does have the best shop system out of any of the x titles for some reason, featured zero's first playable version where he actually used his saber like he should've over his heavy reliance on a buster unlike x3, and they did remake most of the level design of the levels for each of the bosses, and even the character swapping before x7. That said x1,x2 and x4 are still better titles for sure.
Also megaman game gear is just an outright acid trip. You go to cossack's castle where you fight toad man (whos weak to water wave????) And then end up in quick man's stage, dont fight a boss and then kill wily, the end.
Favorite gameboy games are probably mario land 2, wario land 1 and mmv gb

Funny that u didnt mention that Dr Wily machine's fight in Rockman World 1 has the audacity to lock you out of the fight winning it when u use the Enker Mirror or whatever it was called again either before the fight and it isnt completly refilled or when u "miss" one of the shots from the mirror to do damage even once, as u can only damage the boss with the mirror AND u need it at full ammo to defeat Wily. Without say savestates or knowing that this is a thing, u are basically lead into a deathtrap of painful gamedesign for a final boss :/
Also smth I feel like is important to note for this game: You have a lower chance of getting health drops then ammo drops from enemies, which makes this staying alive thing uneccesary harder then needed which was luckily later resolved in all future Rockman World titles.
Lemme tell ya: The person who did the Rockman World 2 OST was new to the team, apparently this was his first work and that through conversion for GB styled music those high pitches came about. I personally am totally fine with it, tho some of them are really high and can be annoying, so its totally a matter of preference. THO: Most of the "fixed" versions, be it the Rockman World 2 Remade OST by Rushjet1 or the other guy which name I forgot, arent that great either, or to be precise: they miss something in nearly all tracks of them, and its not the high notes! Heck the boss theme sounds so middle of the road now in the "remade" OSTs that I dont feel as pumped or stressed in a positive way anymore because of it.
Also funny how u criticze Rockman World 2 being too easy when this is MM2's whole schtick, being the "easiest" in the whole series.
I am also not a fan of Rockman World 3 for a smilair reason as you are, I especially remember the final (or final 2?) Wily fortress stage where I noticed some rooms and enemy placement being unfair to react to or repeating even maybe to stretch gametime? Overall it didn't stick with me, despite Punk being my favorite Rockman Hunter of the three, mostly due to his theme.
I really wish you would have shown your favorite Rockman World tracks in this video while you talk about those games, not just in the background playing. I do say that Rockman World 4 & 5 are mostly tied for my favorite GB MM games but out of originality Rockman World 5 takes the cake for me. Also did you seriously took the MM10 DLC Cameo from the Rockman Hunters for real? It's as real as the Bassman Cameo story campaign, don't count on it if you wanna do some "story" review for the games. Like the Rockman World 5 reappareance of all 4 GB exclusive Mega Man antagonists happened due to them being copied/blueprint saved by Wily to use them again for one final round, just that neither of them have a change of heart of offer something new to the fight aka Wily hasn't learnt anything to adapt to Mega Man, sadly.
42:05 either u used the wrong footage, which by the context u talk about isn't the case, or u have the wrong label attached to that segment, cuz this is from MMX4 Zero's past shown right before the final boss as a cutscene.

I played Mega Man 2 on NES at someone's house. I enjoyed it and wanted a Mega Man game of my own. Mega Man II GB was the first Mega Man game I owned. I got it at this retro game store back in 2007. I thought it'd be the same as the NES version as that was the first time I've ever seen the GB version, only to find out that it wasn't. I still enjoyed it at the time, but eventually, I got Mega Man Anniversary Collection later on. Looking back at Mega Man II on GB, yeah, it's a pretty bad game. I still have it, but I hardly play it for that reason.

Why do you think X6 is terrible? I hear a lot of people say X5 and X6 are terrible? I'm 31 and my first console was the NES so I played the original American released Mega Man games then moved on to the SNES playing Megaman X1 and X2 then once the PlayStation released I had X5 and X6 and both were absolutely amazing, keep in mind this was middle of Elementary School beginning of middle school and in the United States this was like the peak timing for Adult Swim Toonami anime such as Dragon Ball Z, Trigon, Inuyasha, Tenchi Muyo I don't even think the original Dragon Ball was being aired on American television yet flcl and Paranoia Agent can't forget those two but yeah the animated cutscenes I thought were amazing and really drew me in but that was only the tip of the iceberg something about X5 and X6 just really drew me in and they were actually the reason I bought the Legacy Collection I really wish Megaman Legends was included in the Legacy Collection bro even though it was Nintendo 64 exclusive Megaman Legends is probably my favorite Megaman game just because of how different was never got the chance to play Megaman Legends part 2 but I've played every single other Mega Man games including the turn-based titles for the handhelds I have to say X5 and X6 are definitely still both my favorites

Describing the Game Boy Mega Man 2 stages in one word as: "safe"? Dude! The FIRST TIME I played Mega Man 2 on Game Boy, I Game Overed on Metal Man's stage where you have to fall down at the end of the first screen, and if you don't move correctly, you fall on spikes and die for THE NEXT THREE SCREENS! Very cheap, and not at all "safe"! Ha, ha! But yeah, once you get to the fifth screen, it is kind of smooth sailing after that. :)

    • @bardinblue9830
      @bardinblue9830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As for the third Mega Man Game Boy game, I did enjoy how it not only brought back the music, physics, and graphics from the NES 3 and 4, but also had such awesomely detailed backgrounds! The second Game Boy game did not even TRY to use any of the original NES stage music... except maybe Bubble Man's (?) for Air Man's stage, and Dust Man's (?) for Hard Man's stage. 1 was definitely higher quality than 2, but 3 blew both of the previous Mega Man Game Boy games out of the water! Speaking of water... I agree about the ramped-up difficulty in the later stages. I did find those stages challenging, but Dive Man's stage was the bane of my existence at the time. I also agree that 4 was even better than 3! Not only was it more fun, but it actually remixed the NES Mega Man 4 boss music to actually sound GOOD!

    • @bardinblue9830
      @bardinblue9830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Also, a note about the "boss rehashing"... Before Game Boy, unless you count the godawful Tiger Handheld of "Mega Man 2", there really wasn't a portable Mega Man game title. I actually enjoyed fighting against the old bosses in new stages with modified weaknesses when I was a kid - and was pleasantly surprised by the Ninth Bosses (a.k.a. Mega Man Killers) from which I didn't know what to expect at first! When I was looking forward to the Game Boy Mega Man 5, I "knew" which bosses would be selected from NES Mega Man 5 and wondered which ones would be chosen from 6... Ha ha!! But of course, I was wrong! The way cool completely original new bosses and stages did take me a little while to warm up to - especially with Mega Man trading his signature Mega Buster for... a chargeable Hard Knuckle?... But all in all, I agree, 5 was the best of the five games! Oh! And did you know this little tidbit? In both 4 and 5, if you Game Over a certain number of times, Dr. Light... er... Right... will speed up your Charge Shot!
