I'm sure the first time I saw Rush was on the Grace under Pressure tour in 85. Marillion opened for them. At Radio City Music Hall. The funny thing was this was one of the first rock shows to play at R.C. The ushers were all old geezers who were accustomed to dealing with Christmas shows and lighter family fare. They were yelling at the fans not to stand up during the show! Guess who won out. I actually saw Dire Straits at the hall later that year or perhaps 86 and the ushers had obviously been told my management to knock off their bully tactics. Both great shows and the acoustics in that hall are phenomenal. Better days,(sigh).

Another amazing factor is the age of the audience. Teenagers and all others rocking to music made 40 years ago and played by artists in their 60's. There will never be another rush like Rush. RIP Neil.
That was 2003. They were 50 then and 22 years had passed since Moving Pictures. But even in their last live concerts in 2015, they still delivered. So in a sense, you are right.
You rarely ever saw the guys in Rush react or vibe with the crowd. They were always so locked in to what they were doing. But here they were blown away. Even Neil was watching the crowd.

Yup. I remember going to the record store to buy the vinyl album of Moving Pictures when it was released. I have seen them in concert three times and am just reminiscing a bit. Definitely a legend and influence to many of us, Peace.

I challenge *anybody* to find another video where the crowd and the band were anywhere close to being this much in sync, lost in the energy, giving absolutely 100% to each other. Not to mention that Rush nailed this live performance far better than their recorded one. Love these guys. And to be able to live the rest of your life, however short (RIP Neil), with this memory... just wow. /edit: OK, I was wrong. Metallica playing in Moscow was beyond this. But I still give it second place. 🙂
The only one that comes to mind was Metallica playing Enter Sandman in front of 1.6m people in Moscow towards the end days of the Soviet Union. That was in the midst of people tasting relative freedom after 40+ years of anti-west sentiment and oppression. And it still wasn't as good as this!

I saw AC/DC in Paris during the same tour, and for me it was the most disappointing crowd I've ever seen, the show was great, but I was just in the middle of old dudes just standing there like they were watching TV... The opposite with what's recorded at River Plate. I just think Parisians are dickheads, and paris isn't rock n' roll, South America is not a natural place for this too, but at least people there know how to have fun.

Saw Rush 13 times. While I don't think everyone just "sat there," I can tell you that American crowds changed after the Rush in Rio video dropped. Best live album ever. Best live convert video ever. These are clearly football fans. Go to a football match, you'll see fans going off like this. (Not American football, what the rest of the world calls football and we call soccer).
Nothing like going to a rock concert in South America, especially Brazil. I had the great experience of living in Brazil for three years. I saw show sin Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo and the crowds were always amazing.

Honestly, there’s almost nothing in the world like South American rock fans. This show, Alice In Chains at Hollywood Rock, Queen back in the day, Argentina coining the “aguante megadeth” chant. The artist appreciation down there is so explosive and pure.
Never have I seen a fan base of this magnitude all bounce and go nuts at the same time in sync. Dead fans are hard core but this rio concert blows everything out of the water.
Nope! Brazilians love or hate bands/musicians. Regarding canadians, Drake and Nickelback are not popular here and the later got kicked from stage. Raining bottles on Chad Kruger and the band left after just 18 minutes.

I used to watch this every once in awhile, because it always gives me goose bumps. 60,000 singing along to an instrumental in a country RUSH had never visited prior to that tour. Now, I watch with the same goose bumps, along with tears in my eyes, and the feeling of my heart being ripped out of my chest. I challenge *anybody* to find another video where the crowd and the band were anywhere close to being this much in sync, lost in the energy, giving absolutely 100% to each other. Not to mention that Rush nailed this live performance far better than their recorded one.
Love these guys. And to be able to live the rest of your life, however short (RIP Neil), with this memory... just wow.

Acacio Siqueira Me neither! The closest I’ve ever seen was AC/DC live in River Plate, and even the crowd at that show isn’t even on the same level as the crowd was at this show. Too bad I wasn’t even born in 2002.
I saw AC/DC in Paris during the same tour, and for me it was the most disappointing crowd I've ever seen, the show was great, but I was just in the middle of old dudes just standing there like they were watching TV... The opposite with what's recorded at River Plate.
I just think Parisians are dickheads, and paris isn't rock n' roll, South America is not a natural place for this too, but at least people there know how to have fun.

Well I have seen them a few years ago in Birmingham, UK and the crowd was fantastic, but who can compete with the Brazilians?
A lot of it is because of the venue style. Rushed stopped doing general admin and switched to seated which is a lot harder to have fun in
Saw Rush 13 times. While I don't think everyone just "sat there," I can tell you that American crowds changed after the Rush in Rio video dropped. Best live album ever. Best live convert video ever. These are clearly football fans. Go to a football match, you'll see fans going off like this. (Not American football, what the rest of the world calls football and we call soccer).

Nothing like going to a rock concert in South America, especially Brazil. I had the great experience of living in Brazil for three years. I saw show sin Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo and the crowds were always amazing.

But honestly it means nothing - fans of Rush know the deal and that's all that's ever meant anything to Alex. Rush transcends "top lists" and other mundane BS.
EVH once said Alex Lifeson is one of the best, or his favorite. I forgot which.
I mean any guitar player I know adores him.
He may not have that mainstream household name like an EVH or even Carlos Santana
But Rush is very much a musician's band, yknow.
He's easily in my top 3 biggest influences to even play guitar in the first place. I'd put him above Iommi

@Old man this people arent poor, but this was the first rush show in Brazil, so that is a factor. But brazilian audience was like that on every show, not only on big international ones. Rich or poor.

Honestly, there’s almost nothing in the world like South American rock fans. This show, Alice In Chains at Hollywood Rock, Queen back in the day, Argentina coining the “aguante megadeth” chant. The artist appreciation down there is so explosive and pure.
I saw YYZ a few times live. Don't remember a crowd this crazy. It defiently game them some extra energy.

Never have I seen a fan base of this magnitude all bounce and go nuts at the same time in sync. Dead fans are hard core but this rio concert blows everything out of the water.

Nope! Brazilians love or hate bands/musicians. Regarding canadians, Drake and Nickelback are not popular here and the later got kicked from stage. Raining bottles on Chad Kruger and the band left after just 18 minutes.

I used to watch this every once in awhile, because it always gives me goose bumps. 60,000 singing along to an instrumental in a country RUSH had never visited prior to that tour. Now, I watch with the same goose bumps, along with tears in my eyes, and the feeling of my heart being ripped out of my chest. RIP to the GOAT, The Professor, Pratt, Maestro, The Great One, Neil Peart. My hero!
Also worth mentioning- official sales of Rush albums in South America had been low and most of their popularity had been down to unofficial copies of albums and bootlegs.
Maybe their best performance of YYZ in the 21st century....unreal.
Every time I see a clip from this video, and see the audience reacting they way they do, I want to cry with joy.
I was 16 and saw them play this in Houston in 1981, I've been hooked ever since.
