They were considered "too hard rock" or "not mainstream enough." Now they're "old." I think they are timeless and masterful. I still remember reading Omni magazine and listening to them as a kid.

It's so refreshing to just watch craftsmen deliver their creation without all of the histrionics around 'selling' their song; makeup, running, jumping, screaming...spare me. Rush was so unpretentious yet so impeccably gifted. So Canadian.
I started listening to Rush back when this first came out in jr high now as a grandfather I’m still playing on my head phones in my man cave…seen them in concert in Little Rock and OKC..Neal played a drum solo..you could hear a pin drop between licks.RIP sir

Never has there been in my humble opinion a greater guitarist that incorporates rhythm, riffs and musical harmony all combined with song writing as great as Alex Lifeson. As a Torontonian when i was young my first experience going to a concert was at Massey Hall to witness Rush on the second night of their first live album "All The Worlds a Stage" ... my jaw dropped and i was never the same again ... Alex makes me so proud to be a Canadian.

ThE Herbivore You sound like your were born in the wrong generation. Also the video was probably disliked by people that noticed the bad syncing in the video to a different recording.
Can't get enough of the bass groove 2min in. That little drop down back to his groove - right after the pinch harmonics at the end of his 3rd solo (2:14). Freakin brilliant. Adds so much momentum. Little touches like that throughout that blow my mind.
i honestly can say that ive seen alot of bands in my time but Rush is the absolute best band ever...timing, guitar both alex and geddy, neil peart...so happy they walk the Earth with their music. TOTAL control of their instraments and there will never EVER be a 3 man band like them in our lifetime...GUARANTEED. How could there be? lyrics, talent perfection of thier instaments..wont happen
I think what's happening is that they're actually playing, but the live sound is muted and the album track is overlayed on the video. Example: at 3:06, Neil Peart clearly hits the cymbal on his right (our left) but no sound is heard.
Best band of all time. They came up with so many complex beats and patterns and grooves. They combined all kinds of music together.. No one else sounds like Rush.. at all.. not even close. I Usually say stuff like.... Geddy was the best basist ever or Neil was the best drummer ever... But Alex is the best guitar player ever.... And im talking about over my favorite guitar player of all time , Randy Rhoads. I love when i was just getting into Rush... i had to listen to a song like 100 times to finally understand the beat and how they had so many different parts to a song... making the song a story.. taking your mind of a journey of thoughts and feelings... haha .
So many comments saying that one of these guys or two of these guys or all three of these guys are underrated or didn’t get the credit they deserve. I don’t know who people hang out with but everyone I know say these guys on list of top musicians. They may not have got the radio play as much as people think they deserve but that’s because they didn’t make music that was “radio friendly.”
uh no. Lester B Pearson is in Mississauga, Ontario. It's close to Toronto, but the Airport is physically located in Mississauga. The Billy Bishop Airport is in Toronto.
Yes, technically CYYZ is in Missisauga, but it's called Toronto Pearson International Airport. YYZ VOR/DME is called Toronto VOR/DME (where the song and the rhythm originally came from). Rush is from Willowdale, North York.
I love Rush, they are my all time favorite band, comprised of 3 of the best musicians of all time. That being said, I am certain the music I am hearing in this vid is the original recording. There was even one cymbal crash that Neil did in the vid that you couldn't hear on the audio. Every single note, every nuance, every tone, every harmonic, even the feedback was spot on exact to the original recording. There is no way they could replicate every single thing so perfectly. I'm sure they were playing the song, but I'm sure what we were hearing was the original recording. Anyone with me on this?
Agree. When Geddy's synth parts dominate, the video only shows Neil drumming. Only after the synth part does the camera cut back to Geddy, and he only has his bass, synths don't seem to be there.
RUSH always placed their expert musicianship above all else. That's what sold their albums. Not tight pants, big hair, cheesy love ballads... They were (ARE) FN musicians. Experts at their craft. Peart is up there with Bonham and Buddy Rich. Geddys bass isn't a support instrument, part of the rhythm section.. NO he plays that MFer hard enough to make Flea smile. And Alex has to be the most underrated guitarist ever. He can sound like Santana, Page, Gilmour and Van Halen all in the same song but more importantly he has his own sound that is as clean as it gets. RUSH ROCKS.
Ces trois musiciens sont de vrais virtuoses, je les aie connus dès 1974, dommage que leurs concerts en France ont été rarissimes ! Dès que j'entends Rush, c'est toute une partie de ma vie et de souvenirs qui réapparaissent. These three musicians are true virtuosos, I have known them since 1974, a pity that their concerts in France were extremely rare! As soon as I hear Rush, a whole part of my life and memories reappear.
Have seen them live several times. They can play this. There's a reason why Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are considered by many to be the best ever. And Alex is WAY under-rated on leads.
Pikaboss hmm...this is odd...I remember seeing another video I was responding to and somehow I apparently accidentally put the comment on here. Obviously I know there are no lyrics...lol.
Dorian Samaniego its obvious that someone copied and pasted the studio recording over this which was a special little "inside the studio's" thing that rush did. no bad editing, just bad copying skills
The first time I hit the tarmac at the Detroit or Toronto airport I looked for the luggage trams and sure enough - many were tagged with YYZ!!! I tried to always sport my Rush tees and hollered out a big hell yea!!!
These three complete virtuoso's are too easy to fall in love with. I was playing along with their songs from the first album foward (Well, after falling in love everything they wrote and played on the All the World's a Stage live album). True Rush fans probably have a difficult time naming one song that isn't appealing in some way shape or form (often appealing in many ways). From a guitarist's standpoint (as I am) Alex has always been one of the most creative writers for the instrument but Rush fans know all of this. In this particular song and many others the thing that really stands out is that Alex and Geddy do their expected magical things at the highest level of creativity and technique but Neil doesn't sound like he is playing variations as you listen along....Neil somehow sounds like he's expressing three songs (or more)...not just one (or is it just me?). Thanks again Rush! They've always been so awesome!
Not sure if this has been dealt with in the comments below but.....YYZ is properly pronounced as yy zed in Canada and its the tag for Toronto's Airport.
And I can’t believe I have loved this song for like 40 years and just found out the very beginning is morse code for YYZ lol… then it’s like DUH….. I should have known that 😂😂
As a kid I was blown away by what I was hearing with Rush but had no idea about the technical aspect of these songs. As an adult guitar player I am still blown away by Rush!
Alex is one of the truly unsung guitar heroes. Very few guitarists could have hung what THAT bassist and THAT drummer. Alex was a beast in his own right.
A friend and I were listening to this song waaaaay back in early 1990's. We were smoking up and enjoying songs. YYZ came on so my friend blasted it. When the song high the very high note, two glasses that were one sitting stacked one inside the other literally shattered and flipped us out.

TOTAL control of their instraments and there will never EVER be a 3 man band like them in our lifetime...GUARANTEED. How could there be? lyrics, talent perfection of thier instaments..wont happen
theyre so good they look bored.
nacho aaron The song is probably too easy for them haha!
Not sure Neil is miming those drums
I think what's happening is that they're actually playing, but the live sound is muted and the album track is overlayed on the video. Example: at 3:06, Neil Peart clearly hits the cymbal on his right (our left) but no sound is heard.
Dude, this is the original recording, lol, it's mimed or lip drummed, or whatever you might call it...
Everything they do just comes so natural to them it's un fucking believable.. They are the best at what they do....
RIP Neil! You’ll always be a legend!!
It's fantastic when older players still care, practice and play their music the way it was originally done, not coasting through the set.
Did you know melody starting from beggining till 0:34 means "YYZ" in morse code. You can check with a translator.
cool fact!
Also the airport code for Lester B Pearson Airport, where the boys are from (Toronto).
uh no. Lester B Pearson is in Mississauga, Ontario. It's close to Toronto, but the Airport is physically located in Mississauga. The Billy Bishop Airport is in Toronto.
Agreed. It is in Mississauga, but it's also called Toronto Pearson Airport and has a Toronto area code (416).
Yes, technically CYYZ is in Missisauga, but it's called Toronto Pearson International Airport. YYZ VOR/DME is called Toronto VOR/DME (where the song and the rhythm originally came from). Rush is from Willowdale, North York.
It's unbelievable how bad ass this song is!! I have to listen to it everyday
RIP Neil. GOAT rock drummer in my book.
Ged plays melody on that bass. Can’t say enuff great things about this outstanding band!!! Long live Rush.
RIP Neil Peart
"the best drummer in the world"
RUSH always placed their expert musicianship above all else.
RUSH ROCKS.
R.O.A. Absolutely agree ;)
Four words: Seemingly effortless sonic perfection. One word: Rush!
Soooo under rated. This bands music was so influential and full you would never guess they are a trio!!
Musical Gods. Putting these 3 guys together results in complete perfection.
Valeu Lito,ótima música!Aviões e Músicas é top!!!
this song always reminded me of a song that could have been on sonic the hedgehog 2.
Lol, for me it sounds like f-zero on the snes or burnout of the ps(2?) Early console music anyway!!
I was looking for a comment like this
Reminds me of the doon theme song
MY mate just bought an old mega drive with sonic 2, the lion king and Aladdin. We're just looking for another controller - feeling excited!
I always got a Pokemon legendary fight vibe from this
rest in peace neil peart :(
Pure musicians like Rush never fail to put me into musical heaven! Such an incredible band.
My mind was just blown and I am a life long RUSH fan !
To the letter !
Lito e suas recomendações geniais..
How can anyone NOT like this?
If they have absolutely no understanding of music whatsoever. That's the only way.
Easy. This is "lip-synced"
Have seen them live several times. They can play this. There's a reason why Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are considered by many to be the best ever. And Alex is WAY under-rated on leads.
LudwigSC93 uh it has no vocals... genius
Pikaboss hmm...this is odd...I remember seeing another video I was responding to and somehow I apparently accidentally put the comment on here. Obviously I know there are no lyrics...lol.
St. Louis loves you guys and will miss your (mere words do not describe) fantastic show!!!!
Damn! I always fu**ing loved Rush! These guys are the most talented Canadian musicians of all time. Agreed?!?
Man, Tom Hanks can really kill it on the drums!

Neils first drum fill on his tom was clearly a snare sound, bad editing, but that is not their fault. these guys are the best ever.
i didn't notice that at first, i wonder if there are any other editing mistakes...
Dorian Samaniego its obvious that someone copied and pasted the studio recording over this which was a special little "inside the studio's" thing that rush did. no bad editing, just bad copying skills
RIP Neil. A true inspiration.
The first time I hit the tarmac at the Detroit or Toronto airport I looked for the luggage trams and sure enough - many were tagged with YYZ!!! I tried to always sport my Rush tees and hollered out a big hell yea!!!
Alex on the lead guitar was astonishing to watch in this video. So clean. Incredible!
can it get any better than this?
hint: no
No.
No Moe-no Moe.
yikes.
Lost one of the BEST drummers Neil Peart rest in peace.
I bet in one of the upcoming seasons Dr.Krieger will master it!
That's why I came here! Watching that episode now.
Lol me too
I'm so hoping they do this at the Taylor hawkins tribute. Drums and guitar on point, dave will man the drums
You got your wish brother!
Saudações aeronáuticas! Tudo bem com vocês?
Bela recomendação do Lito 🎶
Aviões e musica me fez saber a história dessa música, a música em si eu conhecia, mas como ela foi criada não. Muito show, a história e a música.
Esse trio é assombroso! Que time!! =]
As an adult guitar player I am still blown away by Rush!
this is the first Rush song I've learned on the drums.... RIP Neil
Alex...the master at play...
The fact that YYZ was conceived out of an afternoon of jamming is absolutely incredible
Originally it was just gonna be a bass and drum gig
it was conceived from the morse code tapping of the Toronto airport code (YYZ).
Alex is one of the truly unsung guitar heroes. Very few guitarists could have hung what THAT bassist and THAT drummer. Alex was a beast in his own right.
Simply, AWESOME. Seriously Talented. Thank you for years of great music.
Vim pelo Aviões e Músicas!
If Mozart formed a Rock band !!!
I's so sad. Rest in Peace, my friend.
Form of this song is a painting itself...What a talented group.
A friend and I were listening to this song waaaaay back in early 1990's. We were smoking up and enjoying songs. YYZ came on so my friend blasted it. When the song high the very high note, two glasses that were one sitting stacked one inside the other literally shattered and flipped us out.
