Welcome! This recipe is inspired by Lebanese Mujadara and a combination of few Mediterranean recipes. However, I have added Ginger by choice because of it's various health benefits essentially with digestion. Hope you enjoy the video! :)
I would like to try this recipe but I am not sure what ‘strained tomatoes’ are. Is that a plain tomato sauce? At the store, what product would I look for? Thank you for your help!!!
I just love this type of video where nobody blabbers on , where everything is clear and concise , the photography beutifly filmed accompanied by calm music, well done.
Everyone prefers something else. For me the music is disturbing, beacause it is emotional, and I find it inappropriate for a cooking video. I had to watch it on mute. Also, when I cook/prepare ingredients, I cannot look at the video nonstop. I prefer when the cooks are saying what they are doing so that I can do what they say without actually having to have my eyes glued on the video the whole time. And I don't care about photography or how beautifully it is filmed. I just want to cook a meal, I didn't come here for a cultural experience. Just saying :D
I like that the ingredients and quantities are listed and that the photography is good but I would much prefer to hear the instructions, makes it much more accessible for people with visual issues and for those of us trying to cook along. I will never make this because I’m a beginner cook and I need to hear the instructions while I’m following. Unlikely to subscribe.
This is the best-made cooking video I've ever seen. No talking, just clearly demonstrating every step. It even shows you what medium heat and low heat flames look like. Well done!
In India we make this dish very much same way 😮 we add turmeric and garam masala too and finished with fresh coriander pour some ghee and it's taste heavenly 🤤🤤
The combination of beans and/or peas with grains like rice and quinoa can give a person all 9 essential amino acids needed for building protein in our bodies. Unfortunately, some of these amino acids are in limited quantities. Spinach and quinoa have all nine of the amino acids but still need to be eaten in enough quantity and combination to receive proper nutrition. Fortunately it’s not that difficult! It doesn’t require a college degree in nutrition. There are lots of sources (online, nutrition booklets, library books etc) to guide individuals in making good food choices- and save money while improving their diet. I am much healthier since getting off meat and reducing my dairy intake. I will eat it occasionally for special occasions but I’m convinced it’s an inferior protein source- too much fat and cholesterol. My body makes plenty of cholesterol on its own- over 325 while on a strict vegan diet!

Thank you for sharing that! I appreciate how Indian food incorporates lentils and tomatoes and other healthy things so much. I love legumes and Indian food so I will have to make this sometime!
One major reason public health in India is so bad is this sort of food. Rice and lentils are best avoided. Lentils are full of anti nutritients. Phytic acid for example. Phytic acid blocks the absorption of iron, zinc and calcium.

This is a new staple for me. I've made it three times and it is absolutely delicious! I add the parsley fresh, per serving. It freezes and reheats well.
I have tried your recipe and found it so delicious and easy to prepare and cook. Lots of flavour through each bite. Didn’t have brown lentils in the shops or my nearest supermarket however, I used orange lentils which is just a best! I soaked it over night. I used only half a spoon of salt and coriander; due to sodium and having Dyalisis 3 times a week. Again very tasty and quick. I also lightly fried chunks of quorum to compliment the lentil and rice dish for the grandchildren. I suggest if anyone is going to try this recipe do all the preparation before you start cooking.
PLEASE NOTE: Soaking time of lentil depends on it's quality. Some brown lentils are more dry than the others and will therefore need more soaking time. How to know if the lentils are soaked well? You should be able to cut a lentil piece with your finger nails, effortlessly. If not, then soak it for longer. It's really important that the lentils are soaked well and tender for this recipe.

While visiting Jaffa a couple years ago, I remember buying a bag of mixed rice, lentils, spices and - I think - dried onions at Suk HaCarmel. After cooking, it turned out to be a really nice and hearty meal, but I could not for the life of me remember what was it called. So easy and yummy! I made this, I of course added more spice, cayenne pepper. And I also added chopped dates at the end because I like the contrast of sweet and spicy. This is one my top cooking channels I use regularly…thank you for not taking 20 minutes to show one recipe and without all the incessant talking and showing of cutting the vegetables… Your videos are so easy to watch. ❤

I do so enjoy your videos, delicious food with clear well explained instructions but no unnecessarily long drawn out scenes of vegetable chopping and pot stirring and constant requests to hit the subscribe button and best of all, no misleading click bait subject line - the food says it all !!!! Thank you !! (P.S. I did hit like and I am subscribed 😁😘😘)
I made this last week and it was absolutely delicious. I’m thoroughly enjoying your recipes and was happy you uploaded this new recipe. Thank you for all your hard work!
I made this recipe for dinner with a dish of marinated tofu and peanut sauce. Delicious, filling and comforting. It cooked beautifully with no mishaps. I used powdered ginger (since I didn't have any fresh), mustard seeds, extra addition of curry powder and brown rice. Leftovers with salad tomorrow. Thank you. 😊
This is very tasty . Thank you for the recipe. I used a can of lentils, frozen onions already chopped, frozen ginger, frozen parsley. Because I’m on the slimming world diet….I used 10 sprays of olive oil to fry onions and only 1 tbs of olive oil at the end. It was delicious.. Next time I will use less cayenne as I don’t like my food too hot.
Awesome, loved it , showed your recipe to my mom & she said that she had it in her childhood days only & she calls it brown lentil chaat .I asked her , would she like to have it again. She is very happy to hear it. I am happy as this dish reminds me of chick pea lentil pulao& I love it❤❤.
Another homerun recipe, I just made some for dinner tonight and am definitely making again! Serve on top of finely shredded cabbage, too, for some nice crunch :)
I made this tonight and it’s my new favorite - so flavorful! Never been a fan of lentils before now. The lemon and parsley at the end take it to the next level.
Making delicious dishes with what I can afford is hard. It is really inspirational to see how easily and with so few basic plant-based ingredients I can cook amazing food.
I will do it today - my wife and me are looking forward to it. Your videos are great - no blabla and show off - just focus on cooking and ingredients. Great job.
We braise chicken or meat with all the spices with the yogurt and then add rice and lentils and let it cook together. We add fried onions and corriander on top when cooked. We call it breyani. Love your recipe. Will definately try it, GReetings from South Africa.
I love this recipe I put a little modifications to it and it taste divine! Instead of paprika I used a little bit of Ethiopian berbere and instead of coriander powder I used fresh coriander leaves ❤
I tried this recipe for the second time tonight. This time, I didn't omit any ingredients. I did however, do some chicken breasts that I pre-cooked before adding it to the pot. Was probably the most taste filled dish I've done in a long time. Definitely one to do often. One mistake I made - I probably had too much tomato puree (you have a different name for it) and along with the water, made it too much water in the pot, making the rice a little mushy. Great recipe.
This randomly popped up in my feed. (no pun) Sounded like a good dinner, so I grabbed the recipe. I didn't even watch the video. A few days later, looking for something different for dinner, I made this. I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS WAS! I didn't add parsley, which I think can sometimes overpower everything else. And I added just olive oil and lime juice over the plated dish instead of mixing it in. I think that might actually be the better way to go, rather than losing the flavors by mixing it in. It wasn't quite as good as leftovers, but pretty close, and well worth making enough for that purpose. I will definitely make this again.
I made this today, after looking at recipes yesterday read several of them used your foundation to cook them.House was smelling amazing put yogurt on top and had a cucumber and tomato salad was amazing thank you so much the recipe is a keeper
That looks delicious! I've made something like this in an instant pot without caramelizing the onion or adding ginger or tomato sauce. Your version looks better than mine. I will cut it in half and cook it tomorrow, remove oil, add carrot and celery with the garlic, and then add spinach and zucchini with the parsley. I like lots of veggies. Thank you.
Cooked this. So simple and easy yet tasted amazing . This is now our go to staple on the nights we are really tired but need a wholesome home cooked meal. Thank you.

I'll be making this dish this afternoon and will be bringing it to the lake tomorrow morning. I have been making a version of this delicious Lebanese dish for years, but I love the idea of adding ginger!, the strained tomatoes and the juice of a lemon at the end... what a great idea! Thanks for your great recipes!
In Bangladesh, We call it 'khichuri'. But here we use 2:1 ratio for rice and lentil. It gives a nice balance of carbohydrate and protin. And also tumeric is very essential in this dish.
Unfortunately I have lost my smell and taste thanks to covid but I am definitely making this as soon as I can taste again!! It looks DELICIOUS!! Thank you 🙏🏻
I made this last night. What a wonderful recipe. It was quick to prep, the measurements were perfect and it tasted divine! This recipe makes a good amount and is enough for myself and my partner to have tonight too. Thanks so much.
Thank you. That looks very interesting. I need some simple dishes I can batch cook and this looks to be right up my alley. And thank you SO MUCH for giving quantities in grams! I'm a terrible cook and knowing how much to REALLY put in helps. When they say "cups" I wonder if we chopped it the same, how much is piled on top, and other silly things. Helps my confidence enormously to be able to say "This much is RIGHT!" and go from there.
I tried it with disappointing results. As I said above, I'm not much of a cook and I didn't use either oil or salt which is how I normally cook. Otherwise I stuck to the recipe with fresh spices and weighing quantities carefully. Before adding the parsley there was virtually no flavor, just warm mush. After adding the parsley and lemon the strongest taste was that of the parsley with just a hint of lemon. The rice, white basmati rinsed and soaked, was definitely over cooked. The lentils were perfect. I took the finished product and added a lot of salsa and I could eat it. Perhaps beginning with tomato paste instead of strained tomatoes? Rice and lentils don't have strong flavors, perhaps more spices and herbs? Maybe carrots and celery? If nothing else something should be done about the texture. Perhaps I ruined the rice but within my skill set I don't think I could have done better.
I add a large handful of finely chopped dates. You could also add raisins and chopped apricots. Love your channel, I want to eat less meat and your recipes are so wonderfully flavorful and delicious . Your videos are very well done. Paradise food. Keep it coming.
I liked it very much. Just a suggestion- since you care about health I would suggest you to take a plain pot( not a non stick) and a wooden spoon to mix ingredients with. I grinch when see a teflon coated pots or any of the new coatings for for that matter.
Hi, great recipe, the first I had anything like this was when I visited Lebanon for the first time about nine years ago. Boy, that was a revelation! That country makes some of the world’s best food. But the best part of my one year stay in Lebanon ( I was studying at the American University of Beirut) was to experience the homemade Lebanese food. It was out of that world. They beat the Italians, the Greeks, the French and the Spanish anytime. And that’s based on my experience after having lived, studied and worked in these countries. Greetings from an American living in Norway.
Thank you for this recipe - and all your others. It looks delicious, beautiful, and very adaptable. It’s so nice to have tasty, healthy comfort food like this waiting in my fridge after the first serving, too. Please keep posting your great ideas. I’m going to soak my lentils now! :)
This looks so delicious! I love rice and lentils and will be cooking this very soon. Thank you so much; I'll be looking at more of your recipes. I've been a vegetarian and sometimes vegan since the 1970's, when I realized I was free to eat (or not eat) what I believed was right. Rarely eat out because Americans don't cater much to non-meat eaters.
There is an almost similar dish in India called khichri. It can be made with other lentils or combination of lentils as well. To get its Indian version use clarified butter or ghee. And coriander at the end.
This looks so good that I had to try it - with a box of leftover Chinese takeout rice I never know what to do with and (always on hand in the pantry) quick cooking red lentils so I used the same process as Food Impromptu with the same spices plus black pepper (as well as cayenne), fresh parsley and cilantro - delish! Hearty is the word that came to me as well, I want to make this today and have a hearty dinner😃
Yes indeed
So easy and yummy! I made this, I of course added more spice, cayenne pepper. And I also added chopped dates at the end because I like the contrast of sweet and spicy.
This is one my top cooking channels I use regularly…thank you for not taking 20 minutes to show one recipe and without all the incessant talking and showing of cutting the vegetables…
Your videos are so easy to watch. ❤
Thank you! So Glad you liked it 😊
Did you use dried dates?
Guess what I'm making for dinner tonight !!
Thank you! 😊
I appreciated that the onions and garlic were already chopped. We didn't have to waste time watching her chop those.🎉🎉❤
I made this last week and it was absolutely delicious. I’m thoroughly enjoying your recipes and was happy you uploaded this new recipe. Thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you for trying this recipe. So glad to hear you like it :)

Thank you. 😊
that combo doesn't sound right
@@cherylzaccone9685 It does sound rather unusual, but it worked out well. :)

Thank you! So awesome to hear that :)
Great idea!

I made this tonight and it’s my new favorite - so flavorful! Never been a fan of lentils before now. The lemon and parsley at the end take it to the next level.
So great to hear that! Glad you enjoyed the recipe 😊
Really good poverty meal, no complicated ingredients nice and simple and cheap to cook in bulk. I added a stock cube.
Making delicious dishes with what I can afford is hard. It is really inspirational to see how easily and with so few basic plant-based ingredients I can cook amazing food.
Nice soothing music, no talking and not too long.Thank you looks super healthy and tasty, going to add this to my list.
Thank you! 😊
Same here. Cooking it right now and it smells wonderful!
Wow. Delicious!!! I added 3/4 tsp and Paeyah spice at the end . It became a Spanish dish with so much depth of flavor ✨
Not a Vegan but with the spiralling cost of meat I eat more and more lentil and rice dishes, this is making my list of tasty dishes. Thanks.
Thanks! Would love to hear how it goes :)
The addition of the chicken sounds really nice. I assume you fried it?
I am orthodox & it's the time of fasting , it's avery important food for me
Thank you ❤❤❤
Basmati rice is really nice with lentils, potatoes carrots and some meat ❤ mmm love it
This randomly popped up in my feed.
Fantastic! We tried it and also added a little spinach that we had, after the onion. Delicious!
I made this today, after looking at recipes yesterday read several of them used your foundation to cook them.House was smelling amazing put yogurt on top and had a cucumber and tomato salad was amazing thank you so much the recipe is a keeper
So great to hear that! Glad you enjoyed this recipe 😊
Thank you.
This sounds exactly how I want to make it - no oil and more veggies! Yum!
I have made this for my friends during dinner, and they really enjoyed it! Thank you very much for publishing this recipe.
So awesome to hear that! Glad you enjoyed this recipe 😊
Cooked this. So simple and easy yet tasted amazing . This is now our go to staple on the nights we are really tired but need a wholesome home cooked meal. Thank you.
So awesome to hear that! Glad you liked it 😊
This is a great video, and recipe. So glad that there is no annoying banter or endless time watching someone chopping veggies or whatever. And the fact that you include all the ingredients in the description box. I hate it when you have 2 go to someone's website or blog spot to get the full recipe. .😊
Absolutely adore your recipe. Exactly what I am looking for and the way I love to cook : simple, healthy and vegan. Many thanks !!!!
Thank you! :)

I made this dish (March 2022). I reduced the cayenne pepper to 1/8 teaspoon. (I don't like food that's too spicy.) The result was delicious !
Thank you for posting this recipe. :)
Thanks! So glad you liked it :)
You were inspired by our mdardara... it is a very classique dish of our Lebanese cuisine .... we don't put garlic or ginger.... it is nice to see that our cuisine inspire other culture... 🤗
My mother was Lebanese and my father was English.
He loved the Lebanese cuisine!
I was going to make lentil soup the usual way but I think I'm going to try this 😊 thank you very much for putting this together and out there for all!
I can make a big batch of that Sundays and have it for lunch a few work days per week. I think it will be great when paired with boiled eggs. Delicious, nutritious, filling. Thanks!
Listen!!!!! I am in Jamaica and have been trying to have more plant based foods for the past few months. I saw this recipe and just decided to give it a try... I may not have had all the ingredients but did some substitution and oh my days! This meal is amazingly rich and comforting. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks! So glad you liked this recipe 😊
Everything that this lady makes it's amazing. Simple and delicious. I've made many of her recipes and I certify that are really good!
Thank you so much. I am so glad you enjoyed the recipes :)
This is one of my favorite dishes in the world. I am salivating watching you make it. My only addition would be a spoonful of harissa. Otherwise, this is perfection!
I’ve been making this every week since I found this video. It’s become a household staple.
we made this yesterday and it was just so tasty! as always, thank you for the clear video and written instructions, it makes a big difference...
Thank you! So glad you liked it :)
Yes that's so important
Caremalized onion and home grown tomatoes made this dish soooo good.
In Bangladesh, We call it 'khichuri'. But here we use 2:1 ratio for rice and lentil. It gives a nice balance of carbohydrate and protin. And also tumeric is very essential in this dish.
How much turmeric would you add?
@@iamkasilein For 2 cups of rice I will add 1/2 tsp of tumeric

Thanks! Would love to hear how it goes 😊
Watching your beautiful videos is so relaxing, it's a form of meditation.
Mntryjoseph - Thank you! So nice to hear from you. Hope all is well :)
Fantastic! I will suggest only 1 slight twist to this recipe. Try it with ghee instead of olive oil for a slightly different variation on flavor.
4:58 very simple recipe yet it causes my mouth to water!
Same with me. I'm definitely going to try it.
Excelente receta! Gracias.
I made this last night. What a wonderful recipe. It was quick to prep, the measurements were perfect and it tasted divine! This recipe makes a good amount and is enough for myself and my partner to have tonight too. Thanks so much.
So great to hear that! Glad you liked this recipe 😊
This is very tasty 😋 I tried it don’t forget to add lemon it enhances the taste even more
I don't have much money so i eat lentils & rice a lot, this is gonna be my new standard method. so delicious. thanks :)
I add a large handful of finely chopped dates. You could also add raisins and chopped apricots. Love your channel, I want to eat less meat and your recipes are so wonderfully flavorful and delicious . Your videos are very well done. Paradise food. Keep it coming.
Thank you! So glad you liked this recipe :)
I liked it very much. Just a suggestion- since you care about health I would suggest you to take a plain pot( not a non stick) and a wooden spoon to mix ingredients with. I grinch when see a teflon coated pots or any of the new coatings for for that matter.
Did I just drop acid. That was beautiful!!! I will now watch all your videos to relax and gain inspiration.
Nice one. Will try.
No matter what rice or lentil cooked together is kichdi, cooked separate is daal chawal😀
I absolutely love Lebanese food. One of the best cuisines. Greetings to you too :)
Lebanese food is amazing!! 😍😍😍 One of my all-time favourite cuisines!
I have a recipe from Aunt who lived in Morocco that's very similiar. But she used cous cous with lentils and vegetables.
Thank you for this recipe - and all your others. It looks delicious, beautiful, and very adaptable. It’s so nice to have tasty, healthy comfort food like this waiting in my fridge after the first serving, too. Please keep posting your great ideas. I’m going to soak my lentils now! :)
Thank you! Let me know how it goes :)

Looks delicious 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Love these recipes ! Keep them coming with lentils...would like a vegan simple dipping sauce
There is an almost similar dish in India called khichri. It can be made with other lentils or combination of lentils as well. To get its Indian version use clarified butter or ghee. And coriander at the end.
Oh yeah...I was looking at the parsley while changing it to coriander in my head. ~~Love~~ me some cilantro/coriander.
Ghee would turn this into a non vegan recipe

This looks so good that I had to try it - with a box of leftover Chinese takeout rice I never know what to do with and (always on hand in the pantry) quick cooking red lentils so I used the same process as Food Impromptu with the same spices plus black pepper (as well as cayenne), fresh parsley and cilantro - delish! THANKS!
