Hi Mike, My wife uses Epsom salts with the purfume smell in her bath water everyday so I bucket it out to my house plants and outside plants, works great and doing my share of recycling.

When I moved to SC in 1972 from California, I knew nothing about growing plants in the south. My 100 year old neighbor stopped by one day while out for his walk and we had a lengthy conversation. He recommended Epsom salts to me to put on all my azaleas, hollies, camellias and dogwood trees and my oak leaf hydrangeas. Let me tell you, my yard went from looking scraggly from neglect to being the most beautiful yard you can imagine. I too use it on my potted plants, raised garden and to feed my flowering shrubs too. It is just amazing. Thanks for the good advice on adding it to fertilizer mixes and how much to use. All my plants love Epsom salts!

Hi Mike! Auntie Bagel in Northern Va here. So, for all of my adult years (I'm 65 now) I have tried to keep a potted Gardenia. I grew up in Hawai'i so I miss my tropicals, and Gardenia is my favorite. But for all those years, my gardenia died on me! Auwe! (Hawai'ian for darn it!) I always got the small, bush-type. This year I decided to give it one more try but this time I bought a topiary-like tree. Guess what? It's doing fantastic!! I put it out on my screened in porch in a really large pot. I set the pot into an even larger round clay saucer filled with aquarium gravel. I water it every other day, plus I put water in the gravel, & at least every other day I mist the leaves with plain old well water. After it recovered from the initial shock of bringing it home from Home Depot & repotting it, all those buds that it came with fell off but now it is LOADED with new buds & 2 of the buds are now full-fledged blossoms complete with amazing scent!! I couldn't be happier!! Here's my worry...it freezes and snows here, so obviously I'll be needing to bring VA-Denia indoors for the winter. Is THAT when my beautiful tree will die? I will likely put her in my dining room where two walls have windows for light. But never having one live this long (so far 3 months & counting) what do I do to keep her healthy till next spring? Obviously Empsom Salt will help, but what else do I need to do? I look forward to whatever advice you have to offer. Thank you sooo much for all you do to help us gardners...you are truly a God-send!!

Thanks so much, Auntie Bagel! I really appreciate the support. I love Hawaii, been to the North Shore twice, once while in the Navy in 1999 and once with my wife in 2007. As soon as the plane touches down in Honolulu, I get out of Dodge and head for the North Shore! I love the plants and trees that grow in the Waimea Falls park. Anyway, just make sure that your Gardenia has access to plenty of light through the winter and keep the pot moist. You may want to supplement with lighting as well if there isn't enough coming through the windows. It will still be actively growing while indoors so you may need to supplement with fertilizer occasionally as well. Are you in our Facebook Group (I Love Plant Propagation)? You should consider it and then you can post photos of what the plant looks like and we can help with any problems. Just make sure to answer all the questions when you request to get into the group or it won't let you in. Good luck and I'd love to hear an update from time to time.

I gave up on gardenias, they were such high maintenance. I agree with Mike and I think slowly migrating him away from his "happy place" out on the terrace may help him adjust the the new area better. Yes? Make him think the seasons are changing, like week by week put him to his new location. I bet that will help him not drop buds again. Plants, pets, humans, we all aren't crazy about sudden changes. It tanks our immune system and we get sick. Makes sense the gardenia feels it too. If you are from Hawaii you grasp the idea of subtle energies because the islands have intense electromagnetic fields there. So maybe the gardenia is just highly sensitive too to vibrational changes, etc.
Try to go gently to the new spot and did you know that gardenia flower's aroma opens the heart chakra/center?
      🙏

@@dannac_8888 , mahalo for your response about my gardenia. She surprised me with 3 buds bloomed...I was so excited! I like the idea of moving her gradually to where she will live through winter. And mahalo also for the info about the heart chakra...I did not know that, but I'm always grateful to learn something new.

I've had a lemon tree in my garden for twenty years and it produced the most amazing sweet lemons, it was suggested that I treat the tree with 75g of Epsom salts 3 times a year. I did this for many years. I started noticing that my lemons were getting very bitter but did not relate this to the Epsom Salts, my friends that used to love my lemons started making excuses why they no longer needed them, especially those making lemon pickles. After much head scratching I decided to stop using Epsom salts and it took a good two seasons for the bitter taste of the lemons to go away. I also went through the same process with my lime tree which is now also back to normal and my friends are all happy again. Some food for thought, take care, rgds Peter South Africa.

It's about time! (lol) I've been using epsome salt for years here. The soil where I live is deficient in magnesium that was discovered when cattle the Oregon settlers had were becoming sick. They discovered it was from lack of magnesium, so I add it every year. It is one of those things that does wash out of the soil with our annual rainfalls too. Especially good to use around roses, clematis and other flowering plants appreciate the annual application.

Hi Mike. Faithful follower, I got 15 rose cuttings and 20 hydrangea cuttings potted up and rooting due to your videos lol. I had put a little tutorial earlier in the year on my Facebook with instructions to my friends for putting it on your roses when doing your spring pruning like my grandmother taught me. Well the next thing I knew I had people sending me videos of other people on TH-cam talking about how toxic it was towards plants and soils and not to do it. It was disheartening cause I was just trying to help my friends out. Long story short, I still did my roses, my grandparents roses and some of my friends roses after I pruned them for them and..... They are amazing and just as perfect as they always are. And bonus some of my friends who had super overgrown and way past due pruning needs, well I did some serious cut backs and added the Epsom and boom, fresh new canes , totally revitalized plant. W the improved airflow and the heat down here In Beaverton this year I can proudly say there was no black spot, rust or mildew on a single plant. Thank you sir for being an inspiration to us and staying w the old tried and true ways. Also I have an old heirloom Scotch rose I dig up from a field in Maine and transplanted here to Oregon 12 years ago that always sends up new shoots that I would love to send you. It's a bullet proof plant w tiny foilage and the coolest white/yellow single/double/triple blooms all on the same plant. Let me know if you want me to send u some.

I have used Epson salt for many years and have noticed that when used on my peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants the plants are more vigorous, green and strong. There is a con, however. The skin of the peppers, tomatoes, and egg plants are thicker and that can inhibit their use.

Thanks Mike! You can even drink some too for detox it has to be the kind that can be ingested also it's very good to soak in the tub and add Epson salt an lavender essential oils to relax, it would be nice to have filtered water for your bath to eliminate chlorine(Chloramine is less volatile than chlorine, so it stays in the water longer than chlorine) and fluoride and other crap they put in our water which is not good for us because the skin absorbs it. So Epson salt is good magnesium for the skin. We also need a lot of magnesium as well which is used in hundreds of functions in our bodies. We need more organic gardening to build back the soil we depleted of nutrients with our chemical fertilizer, shampoo, and a lot of uther stuff. No crowing? Hugs🤗💜
