Oh wait... Sorry, I answered the wrong question. The video today was about orchid bark and I just noticed that you asked this about epsom salt. But yes, you can use the garden kind. It should have the same magnesium content in it that the orchid needs, but to be sure, always check the label. With so many brands, its always better to check.
Hi Bobceepookie, Thank you for that comment. I appreciate it. Unfortuneately, I only have an orchid channel. Other plants don't do so well under my care. LOL
Great video, so much useful information. How much water to Epsom salts would you use, if mixing it with 3 gallons of water to give your orchids? Do you pour it on the roots , plant or on the medium ? Thanks for sharing, god bless and stay safe!
Hi Michele, I don't usually go by measurements because everyone's potting medium and water is different. I usually use a teaspoon for every 2 gallons, so I'd add a little more for 3 gallons, around 1.5 teaspoons. I pour it on the roots and over the potting medium, too. I use a lot of sphagnum moss that absorbs more elements than just bark would, so if your media is not one that absorbs a lot, you might want to use more.
Hi Ajimol's World , I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my TH-cam. Thanks for commenting on my video. I appreciate it and was glad it helped.
Hi. I've never used Epson salts in my orchids. How would I mix it with rain water. What would the quantity be tp litres of water. Many thanks. Teresa from South Africa.
Hi Rosemarie, I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my TH-cam. Thanks for commenting on my video. I appreciate it and was glad it helped. About Epsom salt, I didn’t include the measurements or how I use it because that will depend on a lot of different factors. For example, how much water you use, what kind of potting media your orchid is in, how fast your media dries out, how big of a pot your orchid is in…and so on. There isn’t one easy answer for measurements, so that’s why I left them out of the video. To start off, you can use one tablespoon per gallon (4L) of water. If you have orchids that are sensitive to minerals, then start with a teaspoon. That is usually too little, and I must use more in time. From this starting point, if your orchid adjusts well and the leaves don’t turn yellow or have brown tips, then use a little more. So in short, I use it mixed into the watering cycle and rotate the times I use it with other fertilizers.
Hi Amanda. I'm a newbie with Orchids since 2019, so do not have a good idea what I'm doing. I've seen some interesting videos on the use of MSG, MonoSodium Glutamate. I've got hold of some and used it as a mist spray on my orchids. I'd like to hear your take on it. Here in South Africa, Pretoria, it is summer and growing season, so I cannot really say that the sudden new air root development I see is because of that, but it does seem like my random lot of orchids do look more lively and happy. Even some Cattleyas that I have given up on suddenly develop roots and new growth. I did replant them and just placed them on top of some rock chips with a bit of bark mixed in, and placed some sphagnum moss soaked in a 4 teaspoon to a gallon mix of MSG next to them. They had NO roots, and it seems like they may just be saved. I kept the moss damp with water alone, and once a week some MSG water. I've stopped the MSG now and just observe. My plants are watered with bore hole (well) water (Ph7) with a auto sprayer system. Our environment is high temperature, up to 36 deg C (97 F) and higher and low humidity Winter just above 0 deg C(32 F) I do then use frost netting to protect against wind in winter. Because of the non tap water , my fertilizing regime is basically something like, "when I feel like it, get a chance or remember". Obviously some types of Orchids will do better than others...... but some do better than what experts expect, and then the "easy growers" for beginners just don't make it with me. I'm NOT friends with Phalaenopsis, they hate me.
Hi Johannes Nel, I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my TH-cam. Thanks for commenting on my video, especially about your experience. I appreciate it.It's funny how we have some orchids that love us and others that are a struggle to grow. I share your feelings about Phals. I prefer Cattleyas a thousand times more...and your regime for applying fertilizer, "when I feel like it, get a chance to remember," it's perfect! Had me laughing because even though I teach a lot about orchids, I'm kind of like that too.
Hi again Amanda. I enjoyed this one and found it useful. I tried a flush with Epsom a couple of months ago. I've since had a problem with some of them developing what looked like chlorosis to me, yellowing leaves, spots and cicles and some leaves falling off. It has happened on several different types of orchids, particularly Den Phals. Perhaps it's just the time of season where old leaves are dying but it put me off using it. The tds value was about 150ppm, was that too strong? Perhaps I should try again or even foliar feed with it? If I do foliar feed what dilution is best please? Do you think it might have reacted badly with other feed which would have been given a week previously?
Hi Carole, Thanks for the comment. The tds at 150 shouldn't have been the problem since most orchids do well with up to 175. The reaction they had seems like a very typical one to overfertilizing. Depending on what you already use as fertilizer, you may not need to add any Epsom Salt whatsoever. If you decide to go ahead and use it as a foliar feed, you can use the same concentration as a soak, which would be a teaspoon per gallon. Except since they reacted like this even to the soak, I wouldn't attempt the foliar feed. It seems like they have what they need already with your fertilization regime.
@@Orchideria OK thanks for the reply. I was using it in place of my feed (around weekly) to try to flush out extraneous salts in the medium. I guess I will watch another of your videos to see how this works 😊. I saw people do this in the AOS.

So for a few days only, I have 2 blooms. Then I whip out my camera... LOL
Hi Rozanne, I would just stay with the roots. Even though orchids absorb water and nutirents through their leaves, for the most part, the leaves are hydrorepellent. Water will trickle down the leaf and not have any effect at all. Some might get absorbed, but through the roots are the best method.
Lol i guess u meant an edible salt. Lol it it is a salt tho as in ionic compound. I'm glad i ran across this vid bcuz I use it in my garden & have been wondering if orchids can handle it

Hi I'm on my 3rd phalaenopsis. I bought my first used that fertalize with two measurements by miracle grow no flowers since had to remove bad roots dropped three leaves one is now growing at the top. Very upset. 2nd was given had black spots all over it I got rid of that but it died. Now my fiance bought me a big one from target in a week my flowers are drooping. That I attributed to heat. It was nice out than got really cold out so I had to change my heat to hotter and it's dry in here. So I realized that gallon of water And bought the spray I sprayed under and on the tops of leaves I see signs of rot on my first leaves not drooping anymore. I'm so frustrated so I'm learning now what to do bc I'm usually a saver of plants I have tons in my garden and I bring my tropicals in bc I'm in CT. Humidity is best in June to Sept here. Help lol I am so worried! I am going to be composting and I bought one that allows the tea to pour out so I'm hoping to help boost all of my plants. Can I get some advice on the best orchid mix for the pots the best fertalize method and how to correctly care for them. I'm sorry to be a pain. I'm not into killing plants though. Thanks for reading my incredibly long message. Btw I just subscribed and you are awesome.
Hi Nicole, Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. There are a lot of separate/unique topics in your comment and I can't answer them all with a comment. I suggest looking at my website www.orchideria.com and on the LEARN page, there are topics split into groups. This probably would be the best way to start trying to answer your specific questions. Start with the potting media, and how to select the best one. Then you can look at the fertilizing group. I hope that helps. :)
Hi Willem, You need to find a product that has calcium carbonate that is plant soluble. Some products that say they have calcium can't be absorbed by the roots.
Hi Muhhamed, Epsom salt does not contain any calcium or iron. It is magnesium sulfate (MgSO4), which is magnesium and sulfur. Orchids will need extra calcium and iron, so be sure to fertilize with a fertilizer that contains both those, along with Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. I am not sure about the grams per liter, so I had to do some math. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I use 1 tablespoon per gallon, which is 4 L. 1 Tablespoon has around 14 grams, so 14/4? Is that right? It's not much at all. Start with a little and gradually add more with time.
Hi Chad, I have never used lavender epsom salt, so I don't know how to answer your question honestly. My guess would be that it wouldn't be good just because of the other ingredients in the mix that may (or may not) be harmful to the orchid's roots. Again, this is my guess. Maybe someone else can chime in and leave an answer. If you can, try to use the regular epsom salt.
Hi Donna, Thanks for asking. I mix mine with 1 tablespoon to a gallon of distilled water. Some articles say to use 2 tablespoons, but everytime I've done that, the results weren't so great.
Hi Robert, Excellent question. When I made this video I stated that it decreased the pH, making the potting medium more acidic. Since then, which hasn't been that long ago, I've read a couple articles saying that has been disproven. I'm still checking into that answer and the validityof the authors who wrote it, so for now, I still stand by my answer. If I read some more and get a convincing article or proof that this is in fact a myth, I will go back and change my answer.
Oh, and one more thing... Use Espom salt by itself, on a non-fertilizing day. Some fertilizers interact badly with Epsom Salt and the outcome isn't as good as expected.
Thank you for all that information! I love your videos! If I fertilized my orchid today with eggshells, when can I fertilize with epsom salt? How can I combine those two and is it enough for the orchid? I don’t want to over fertilize it
Hi Yulia, Whatever you do, don't add 2 fertilizer supplement together in the same watering day. Since you added eggshells, I'd wait 2 weeks and then use Epsom Salt. It won't hurt if you water with Epsom salt earlier, as in 1 week, since the eggshells will remain in the pot a long time. They will eventually react with each other, but if you can give them the 2 weeks, it's better.
Hi Helen, Thank you for watching my video. I appreciate it. I didn't include a fixed amount of Epsom Salt because this will depend a lot on your type of potting media, how big your orchid pot is, how often you water and a whole bunch of other stuff. So I didn't add that part. You can start with 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon of water and move up from there (if your orchid reacts well).
Hi Robert, The exact amount will depend on the size of your orchid and what medium it is in. Usually you can dilute 1 teaspoon into 2 gallons of water and use that to water your orchids. See how the orchid reacts and adapt the quantities from there. You can also soak the orchid in this for a few minutes.
Hi Josh, For semi water culture, you don't want to let the orchid sit in the water that has the Epsom Salt (or any other fertilizer) for a long period of time. So the idea is to use epsom salt, let it soak for 20-30 min then change the water to distilled, rain, RO, or any other water source that doesn't have minerals. That way the orchid can still hydrate but without the risk of overfertilizing.
Hi Krista Choi, For slugs, you can use 2 methods. One is more natural: crush up eggshells (but not into a fine powder). Leave a few bigger pieces that have the sharp edges on them. Since the slugs have to slide over them to reach the orchid, they avoid it. This works well for orchids outside, too. The problem with this method is that it doesn't eliminate the slugs, rather it prevents them from coming back. To eliminate them, you can you diatomaceous earth. But that is very harmful to animals and also to your lungs, so take precautions. It works, but be very careful.
What do you think of this recipe? Medium for orchids Sphagnum moss Perlite Shultz larger perlite if you can find it. Vermiculite 1/2 cup Wood charcoal pcs 2 cups bark 1 cup sphagnum moss 1 cup vermiculite 1 cup perlite Mix well
Hi II, it would really depend on the orchid, your watering regime, how much humidity is in the environment, what pot they are in and items like that. It looks like a solid mix, but I really can't say yes or no.
Hi I I, In this case double up on the sphagnum moss. You can almost do without the other material growing in pure sphagnum. It might be a challenge when you water, which you'll have to cut down a lot, and mist every other day or even every day. I prefer to have some bark and perlite inside just for stability, and you can certainly add those. Just be sure to keep the sphagnum over 50% of your mix.
I have a lot of favorites... LOL. I can tell you one I don't buy though. It's called supermoss and comes in a "purple-ish" blue label. It's way too dry and didn't absorb/retain anything. Any other brand is decent. If you can, either get one from New Zealand or Chile. They are a lot more in cost, but hold up very well.
Hi Cheran, I am not sure what you mean by thread, but if it to grow new roots, you might want to try the sphag-n-bag method video. If you look at the videos on my channel, find the one with the title sphag-n-bag method, or how to care for a rootless orchid.
Hi Suseela, I use 1 -2 tablespoons per gallon (4L) but the ratio will depend on a lot of things, mostly what your potting media is. Start slow and use little by little.
Hi Rhonda, I mix one teaspoon in for a gallon of water, and adjust from there. It will depend a lot on your potting medium. If you use sphagnum moss you might use less, if you have bark, you might want to add more.
I have a moth orchid that I have had for about 13 years. It has bloomed every year. I may have fertilized it about 12 years ago. It has numerous aerial roots on about a 4 inch stem. I say it's not the most healthy plant, I'm kind of surprised that's even alive.
Hmmm. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, MgSO4. It's fun to try supplements and it shouldn't so shouldn't be necessary if you are using good orchid fertilizer.
I meant to say, "It's fun to try supplements BUT they shouldn't be necessary if you are using good orchid fertilizer" (that is, have sufficient magnesium). :-P
Hi Sherman, You are absolutely right. If the fertilizer is a good one, it will have all the nutrients that the orchids need. I've found out that, unfortunately, the most common fertilizers on the market only have NPK and a tiny bit of calcium, if that. But if you can get hold of a good quality fertilizer, that's awesome! No need for the supplements.
@@OrchideriaThat's a good point, that even a good fertilizer may not have all of a nutrient you need. I have grown a (non-orchid) flower for years that really needs calcium supplementation for hydroponics here where our water is very soft. I should have thought of that. Thanks again for your help. (I had a cattleya that grew on my kitchen windowsill for years but never bloomed. This time I'm hoping the two withered Phalaenopsis I rescued from a busy friend's windowsill will do better.)
Hi Paula, I didn't mention the quantities because that will depend on a lot of factors. You can start out with a teaspoon per gallon and work up (or down) from there depending on how your orchid reacts.
Hi E E, That depends a lot on the type of orchid, potting media, climate, etc... I usually add 1/4 teaspoon up to a a full teaspoon per gallon of water. I don't really measure... I just take a pinch. It's not exact... Start with 1/4 and see how your orchid reacts. You can increase the dose up to a full teaspoon if it reacts well.
7:05 , yes, i gather rain water for my orchids and house bound tropicals. Summertime they all go out and get rained on.
You did not say how to mix the Epsom salt, but thanks for the information.

It should have the same magnesium content in it that the orchid needs, but to be sure, always check the label. With so many brands, its always better to check.
No ospson salt the one that you for garden or different kind
You can use the garden one. Many garden stores sell epsom salt because its good for other plants too.

I would use orchid fertilizer! Michigan State University orchid fertilizer. MSU fertilizer you can find it under any brand

Hi, do you do only orchids? Just asking 'cause you explain things clearly.
What if you use destilled water? And how and often should you use epsom salt?

Hi. I've never used Epson salts in my orchids. How would I mix it with rain water. What would the quantity be tp litres of water. Many thanks. Teresa from South Africa.
How do you apply the epsom salt? Sprinkle over medium, or disolve in water? Thank you.
Thats very interesting. Why though, are the orchids in terracotta pots. I wouldnt be able to see the roots

Hi Tammi, I appreciate your words. Thanks
Thanks Amanda. Should I spray Epsom salt water to leaves as well or is it only for the roots
Hi Rozanne, I would just stay with the roots. Even though orchids absorb water and nutirents through their leaves, for the most part, the leaves are hydrorepellent. Water will trickle down the leaf and not have any effect at all. Some might get absorbed, but through the roots are the best method.
Thanks

Hi Nicole,
Thank you for the comment.
which type of calcium the one you sprinkle in the garden?

I have some questions first epsom salt have calcium n iron?
2nd the dose 1table spoon? How much in gms per litr
Kan u use lavender epsom salt that comes mixed already yes or no??
Hi Chad, I have never used lavender epsom salt, so I don't know how to answer your question honestly. My guess would be that it wouldn't be good just because of the other ingredients in the mix that may (or may not) be harmful to the orchid's roots. Again, this is my guess. Maybe someone else can chime in and leave an answer. If you can, try to use the regular epsom salt.
@@Orchideria thanks 🙏🏽

Hi.
How to use Epsom salt to Orchids. As you didn't mention. Please let me know
diluting 1 teaspoon of magnesium sulfate per gallon of warm water
How do you use the Epson salt? Do you put right on plant, mix with water & how much of each??
Hi Donna, Thanks for asking. I mix mine with 1 tablespoon to a gallon of distilled water. Some articles say to use 2 tablespoons, but everytime I've done that, the results weren't so great.
Does the addition of epsom salt increase or decrease the pH of the orchid fertilizer.
Thanks so much for you info..
Hi Bjak, Thank you for commenting. :)
@@Orchideria thank you!! And thanks for the quick reply!
what is the ratio? How much do u use for orchid? thanks
Hi Helen, Thank you for watching my video. I appreciate it. I didn't include a fixed amount of Epsom Salt because this will depend a lot on your type of potting media, how big your orchid pot is, how often you water and a whole bunch of other stuff. So I didn't add that part. You can start with 1 to 2 teaspoons per gallon of water and move up from there (if your orchid reacts well).
how is magnesium sulphate applied to orchids
Hi Robert, The exact amount will depend on the size of your orchid and what medium it is in. Usually you can dilute 1 teaspoon into 2 gallons of water and use that to water your orchids. See how the orchid reacts and adapt the quantities from there. You can also soak the orchid in this for a few minutes.
How much Epsom salt in how much water?
how would you use Epsom salt on semi water culture orchids ?
Hi Josh, For semi water culture, you don't want to let the orchid sit in the water that has the Epsom Salt (or any other fertilizer) for a long period of time. So the idea is to use epsom salt, let it soak for 20-30 min then change the water to distilled, rain, RO, or any other water source that doesn't have minerals. That way the orchid can still hydrate but without the risk of overfertilizing.

I keep getting slugs on my orchids.. problem is i cant change the pot coz i think new flowers will come out soon..what should i do?
Medium for orchids
Sphagnum moss
Perlite Shultz larger perlite if you can find it.
Vermiculite
1/2 cup Wood charcoal pcs
2 cups bark
1 cup sphagnum moss
1 cup vermiculite
1 cup perlite
Mix well
Hi II, it would really depend on the orchid, your watering regime, how much humidity is in the environment, what pot they are in and items like that. It looks like a solid mix, but I really can't say yes or no.
@@Orchideria I have absolutely no humidity. I live in upstate NY in the mountains. I have to put seedlings heating mats and grow lights on my orchids.
@@Orchideria what's your favorite spagnamum moss? Do you soak it for an hour before you add it to the orchids?
I have a lot of favorites... LOL. I can tell you one I don't buy though. It's called supermoss and comes in a "purple-ish" blue label. It's way too dry and didn't absorb/retain anything. Any other brand is decent. If you can, either get one from New Zealand or Chile. They are a lot more in cost, but hold up very well.

What is the mixture of epsome salt
What amount of epsom salt should be mixed in water to water orchids?
Could you show how much to use?
Hi Paula, I didn't mention the quantities because that will depend on a lot of factors. You can start out with a teaspoon per gallon and work up (or down) from there depending on how your orchid reacts.
How much Epsom salt do you use to apply to orchids or how much to a gallon of water?
Hi E E, That depends a lot on the type of orchid, potting media, climate, etc... I usually add 1/4 teaspoon up to a a full teaspoon per gallon of water. I don't really measure... I just take a pinch. It's not exact... Start with 1/4 and see how your orchid reacts. You can increase the dose up to a full teaspoon if it reacts well.
Ok, thank you so much
