How to Correctly Use Epsom Salt on Cucumber & Tomato Plants with Mix Recipe: Don't Over Use it!

- Epsom Salt is misunderstood and often over used. It is a fertilizer but it only supplies plants with Magnesium and Sulfur. It is not something plants need every month. This is how you mix it and how I use it on tomato and cucumber plants when needed. If your soil gets magnesium and sulfur from other amendments you don't need to use it. Use it with a plan and purpose.

Thank you! This is so spot on! When I first started gardening, I used to use a handful of Epsom salts in the planting hole (tomatoes) and then diluted (as you showed) at least monthly because of the myths you just talked about. Another reason I did it - is because I heard it made tomatoes taste better. 😆 Thankfully, I never ran into an over-use problem. Now, better educated, I can attest - NOT using it hasn't diminished any health with my tomato plants or the fruit I harvest. It's simply one less thing I have to worry about and that's part of your point, I believe. Thanks Gary.
Yeah it really doesn't need to be over-used. And you have a good example of how we learn and make adjustments. Terrible bad things didnt happen with your higher use, but you just don't need that much.

That was my goal. It is a fertilizer but not a replacement for NPK and its only needed in small doses.
My lemon cucumber plant is in a container and the bottom growth has turned brown and has dried out most of its roots. Can u help?

I love how you mention the conflicting info on using it. I hate being a garden newb, it’s so hard to figure out what we should be doing and what's just a gimmick.

I have just started a veg garden. I have a small raised bed. In I have growing. Carrots, beetroot, onions, garlic and peas. I bought two potato sacks and the potatoes are doing well. The tops have been nibbled by slugs. I have not put slug pellets down. I have harvested some potatoes which were lovely. Better than Cheshire potatoes. I will take your advice on the web and start to harvest when I think the veg looks ready. Love your videos.

I use Epson salts at the beginning of planting. I then spray my tomatoes and peppers plants with low dose of aspirin. Since I've started this process my plants produce so much more.

I want you to share your experience and expertise for growing tomatoes, spinach, hot peppers, strawberries. One of my tomatoes plants only got flowers and little tomatoes but the rest two plants got nothing. Also peppers plants have flowers but no fruits yet. Please advise.
@@nkausar1 try using the aspirin water and if you have Epson salt put a 1/4 cup around the plants. Either before it rains or you can water them to get it down in the ground.
I withhold and used absence salt on tomatoes. Because they were turning brown on the bottom. And it did work it makes. I think that's what worked.

Question Gary, we have tons of mulch from redwoods, oaks, and madrones the redwood mulch tends to be very acidic, is it ok for my veggie garden? Also does mulching encourage more earwigs? We tend to get those also.
I cant answer on the earwigs. I use a ton and dont really get them. Probably depends on your area. I think the acidity issue balances with rain and other organic matter as it is a slow decay. But you could alway spring the paths or soil with some garden lime. Just a bit and that will balance worries.

Gary, my tomato leaves are curling upwards, cupping. From the bottom older leaves up. No discoloration, leaves are dark green. I am container growing. Temps are 25-30 celcius. 10 hours of sun. Feeding organic slow release granular. 5-10-5. Help!

Great info! My beans' leaves are yellowish green (not yellow from dryness) They are supposed to be a darker green (from what I see in you tube from other people's plants). I searched online and in some say give them Epsom salt and some say never give Epsom salt to your beans and peas. What do you think/advise?

Yeah, that is probably enough. Especially if you fertilize regularly. I would use the ES in containers even with that but in earth beds, I think it's enough.

How about using Epsom salts for a hanging geranium that is looking just worn out too soon. In Michigan.
Probably needs nitrogen the most. This is just for magnesium and sulfur. A quick feed of ES might help but it is usually nitrogen.

It's just not necessary or beneficial significantly. I dont like putting extra stuff on leaves, especially when I am spraying for pests and disease, The roots get what plant need.

A friend has had great results using Epsom salt + Powdered milk on his tomatoes. Perhaps the calcium addition would depend on the pH of the soil. The milk was tired old prepper-stored. I will ask him how much and how often he applied this.
People have had success with that.

QUESTION: I’m having an issue with aphids on my zucchini but my tomatoes and all my letters I’ve tried insecticide soap and Neem oil, but they keep coming back. Also, I’m seeing white flies on some of my tomatoes and my lettuce. Lastly, some small red bugs on my tomatoes, some kind of mite? I dusted tonight, running out of ideas. Do you wash the dust off 24 hrs later, is that enough time to kill the pests or should the dust be left on longer? Any suggestions?
Looks for peppermint spray videos.
The neem oil is killing beneficial insects. Spray off the aphids with a hose or spray bottle. Put out ant bait if you see ants farming the aphids. And the plants should bounce back.
I dust at night and rinse off in the morning if the plants have flowers pollinators go to. The dust should be effective.

What can I do for knats? I have them all over my plants in my raised beds.
Drenching the soil in neem once a week for 2-3 weeks should help with that, thats what I do anyway when I get them in my pots. Till/disturb the soil regularly too so they can't establish.

Neem will kill lots of good bugs. Fungus gnats aren't usually a problem outside, but if they are fungus gnats, mosquito bits targets those, without killing beneficial insects.

I'm no expert, but with them being young, it could be too much sun, too hot, too dry, too wet, or lacking nitrogen. With the drying leaves, I suspect too much sun or the soil may be compacted and not holding water well.
I dont know really on fruit trees. This low amount is really for garden plants. I would suspect and well balanced water soluble fertilizer for your tree would be the first step.

Epsom salt adds magnesium and sulfur. So they are different. You dont have to use ES. But I would it 1x. It doesn't not have to be a monthly thing.

In a pot or in the ground?
If it is in fact getting the same water, then it might have a disease, I'd replace it.
Are they the same or different types of tomatoes.
If all things are the same with care, let it be. Maybe give it some water soluble fertilizer. But you can correct a problem if you dont know what the issue is. Just give it what they all are getting as you are. You might have replace it.

No dont do that. It is way too much concentration and will cause issues. 1 tablespoon in a gallon of water. Quick soaking of roots.

Yeah I really screwed up. I put Epson salt down for my pear Trees. I put to much down and killed the blooms on one of the trees. Bummer. Be careful using epsom salt.

Nope! You do not need to provide Mg or SO42- in any case UNLESS you have a soil test that tells you that you need these nutrients. To put this in perspective maybe 1 soil test in 100,000 indicates the need for these nutrients. You need to be very specific on this, PLEASE!
I dont agree using very low doses. It is to feed the immediate growth area. You can get a soil test for sure. The issue is over use and over concentration. I do say with compost and amending it is not necessary. It also has benefits in container, but it only needed is small quantities.
