Thanks! Tried a little twist on the typical torched putter by bead blasting it before and after. Will be trying some new finishes like this one in the near future!
How did you get that color with the torch? I am trying to do this to my newport. I want to know exactly how to get this color if possible! Thanks and great work.
Simply torch it until you get the color you want. I use a Mapp gas torch and it takes awhile to turn. Longer you torch, the darker it gets, then will start turning slightly blue.
No. But you would need to remove any weights, sole plates, and paintfill. You need to be 100% certain also that the putter is clean from all oils and debris. Otherwise, the finish will not be uniform.
I purchase them online, or trade for some. Most in pretty bad condition as you can tell. Some I keep, most of them I sell. I usually sell them for a very fair price also so, I don't really make much money on them, as long as I can make a video and try out some new finishes. 🙂
That looks killer, this video just gave me inspiration to have mine done this way. I'm curious, what do you charge for something like this? Another question would be if a single 8lb box of media you linked to would be enough to run in a small blast cabinet?
Absolutely. I have purchased multiple different types of media. Some are 10lbs. Some are 8lbs. And usually I only dump half the box in at a time. No need for all of it UNLESS youre only using that one kind. I only use a bit so it's easier to clean out when I change medias. Also keeps contamination at a minimum. Email me anytime at igolf906@gmail.com for any other questions.
For this finish I use a 240 grit glass bead. And I plan to do a classic style oil can finish in the near future. Similar process, but I will look into the hot oxide!. So far I've only done cold bluing/oxide finishes.
After baking, it's cooled just enough to handle. So then I blast it, and most of the time it's still warm when I torch it. And no, it doesn't affect the feel. If I were to torch it and then quench it in oil or water, it might change the make up a bit.
The color in the video at the end is the actual color. It actually got slightly lighter after the light bead blast. The thumbnail depicts an automated enhancement so changed the color slightly for more vibrance.
Isopropyl alcohol. A trick I learned a little while back to make the paint not only flow better, especially in the dots, but it keeps it bubble free and glossy! Takes a little practice because you don't want too much alcohol in there otherwise the paint will just float. Just a thin film of it.
What paint do you use for the paintfill?? It looks like some version of testors, I wanna do something to my putter and wanna make sure I get the right one 😅
@@igolf906 thanks for the timely response! Ya I’m gonna hideki out a new Scotty Newport I think. Black (don’t think translucent would matter) fill on the dots covering the center silver, and red on the flange line. That part might be translucent so thanks for that specification!
@@jasonmayala7315 Nice! My studio select video from about 4 months ago is sort of designed like one of Hidekis putters. Totally unintentional but, very nice looking!
@@igolf906 would oil quenching affect the satin bronze color at all. This putter is probably my favorite of all your posts. Thanks for the great content.
@@michaelhennig6303 Well you originally mentioned a carbon putter. This putter is stainless. When torching you will get completely different colors with the different steels. So oil quenching stainless steel wouldn't really benefit it at all, and I'm not entirely sure what would happen to the color.
No sealer on these type finishes. So they will wear as normal putters do. Cerakote makes a clear coat essentially I may try out in the future but usually isn't a very requested finish. Also, if you checkout, I believe it was my 2nd video I uploaded, I did a gun blue on an old TP Mills putter that is essentially the same as black oxide. I will definitely do more in the future when I get the proper putters in, to do that finish.
@@jimadams5279 Very cool. I'm actually going to be looking into purchasing an older Art of Putting style Newport possibly to put either an oil can or a gun blue finish on.

Not big enough! I use a 21 gallon 175 psi vertical. Good little compressor but when sandblasting I have to stop 2 to 3 times to let it run just to blast one putter properly. Will be upgrading soon! Looking to get a 2 stage at least 30 gallons. Will last a bit longer but will fill up way faster!
I will be posting my 1000 subscriber giveaway video soon! Putters, golf balls and more!!!
Again, awesome transformation of an awesome putter.

@igolf906 Very nice. I'm curious, did the putter lose any weight from grinding and blasting?

Did you watch the video?
😂 yeah. Multiple times. Didn’t realise it could be done from just heat. You got it a very uinform colour all round. Favourite finish I seen yet
@tomworboys4038 it's not my video but yea. He just torched it.
What grit beads do you use? Could you do a hot black oxide finish video please that would be interesting to see

After heating is it cooled at room temperature? And does the heating affect the hit or performance of the putter at all?
After baking, it's cooled just enough to handle. So then I blast it, and most of the time it's still warm when I torch it. And no, it doesn't affect the feel. If I were to torch it and then quench it in oil or water, it might change the make up a bit.
Did the putter continue to darken after the last bead blast or is it a trick of the lighting?
The color in the video at the end is the actual color. It actually got slightly lighter after the light bead blast. The thumbnail depicts an automated enhancement so changed the color slightly for more vibrance.
What did you use for blast media here? Awesome work!
It's 240 grit glass bead. It has to be blasted at low psi, 50 to 60. And the finish prior, has to be near perfect but, looks nice.
What media, grit, and psi did you use?
240 grit glass at 50-60
What buffing wheel did you use??
It's a convolute deburring wheel. Check my video description for all the tools I use
What grit and type of demurring wheel do you use?

Would torching a carbon putter prevent it from rusting?
Torching and oil quenching is a good rust prohibitor on carbon. It will rust over time though, if not taken care of and oiled occasionally.
