Done a decent job, looks fine and if you are happy, that’s all that matters. I fell in love with my Studio Design Scotty 17 years ago and its still a wand . Mine had a few blemishes, so have now cleaned the black coating away and it’s still magic. Great vid thanks!
The paint on the mill you can keep the mill through just braso and some patience and the finish on scotty's is a black oxide finish which should have been redone to keep that gorgious finish
Yeah I had this putter in high school in 05-08. Still have it and still in just as good shape. I have noticed even with restorations through scotty custom shop they never get the finishes like when they came out. The rainbow look is the best and gets so many compliments when I use it. Also have a mint 2.5.
You sanded the milled face 🙈 I'd personally use it and after the paint chips off to a level that causes distraction, I'd send it to the putter room for an oil can finish and the face re-milling👍
Very light sand blasting first then powder coating would last for many years and make for a slightly better finish but in all fairness I think it looks great and its a SCOTTY CAMERON so well done.
A good job. My only concern is that it looked like your refurbisher's grinding was a bit harsh. I would not have expected sparks coming off. But it may have been necessary depending on how deep the damage was.
If the paint doesn't hold up I'd suggest you use a product called "cerakote" it's an extremely durable spray on ceramic finish used in the firearms industry here in the USA. It's a spray on finish that's fairly easy to use and comes in close to 100 different colors and several different sheens, (flat, semi gloss, high gloss, etc.)
My only concern would be whether or not the face of the putter was affected when you ground those “milling lines” off of the face. You’ll find out when you take it to the grass whether or not it rolls “true.”
I had the almost exact same story with the exact same putter except I didn't refinish mine. I bought another one about 3 years ago and vowed to never lose it again.
Should have gone to Chris Finch? Not a bad job but the original oilcan finish is great. Mine is a little worn but still regular use of gun oil keeps it in play. 👍
For me, it is also a Scotty Cameron putter. Mine is a GOLO 6 that I bought new in late 2015 or early 2016. At $410 it is the most expensive club I have ever bought and I still don’t regret it.
To be honest it looks damn fine to me. The paint will likely chip through time as you say unless its been some sort of special chop resistant type, Take note to give it lots of TLC when on the course; swipe it clean before putting it back in the cover. Try not to have it being hit by other clubs when in the bag etc. Cheers
Looks really good Matt, You should leave the cover off of it until you use it because the paint will get harder over time. Maybe even put a shellac cover on it to keep the paint looking great. Ask Mike about the shellac coat over top to see what he thinks.
I have a custom x12 with a welded flow neck I got the company that carried out the work to paint the whole thing black I hated the colour so i have pulled it apart myself and am going to paint the wings back to original colour Im going to use hard stuff enamel paint Very durable
My dad has the exact same studio design no.5 in mint condition! Truly a thing of beauty. He thinks he cant putt with it... Im doing my best to convince him he's right ha! Just out of curiosity, how much is a mint one of these worth today? Seen a few on ebay in the states for as much as a thousand dollars!
Nice work Matt. Whether it lasts or not does not really matter as you will enjoy doing it again next time, maybe change colour scheme etc. It's a trip down memory lane for you too huh? ? Geoff
Matt, you could get the grooves back if you go to a metal machinists, I’m sure they would be able to do it for you with professional milling equipment. Looks good, don’t think the finish will last years but doesn’t take away from how good it looks.
The paint and or clear has to have a hardener in it. 99% of spray cans don't. A 2k clear* (brand name) 2 part in a can has automotive hardener mixed in and when cured correctly would not chip. Other wise this will not hold up. The testers enamel paint used to fill the lettering should have no problem as it hold up really well and is slightly recessed.
What type of putter would you recommend for. 12 handicapper? I use a bullseye now because I like the way they look. But I don't think this is very forgiving for me.
I’d recommend sticking with it until you get down to lower figures. Having an unforgiving putter will make you a better putter in the long run. But if you want something forgiving then any evnroll model
I had the same issue Matt. Bought a Scotty Cameron Newport, an older one. The paint infill was green..... 🤢🤢 I took it to Chris Finch who is of course , the master of refurbs. He did a first overhaul on it. It’s in my bag right now. ⛳️😁👍🏻⛳️
Although everyone seems to worship them, and they have collector value, S.C. putters are simply just putters. In fact, most of them are inferior because for the average golfer, the Sweet Spot is the size of a pencil eraser. The actual truth about putters is a mallet head will feel more solid than a blade type putter. The single most important thing on a putter is the grip. The "flat spot" on a traditional grip must be exactly in the right place to the micromillimeter. If the flat spot is rotated just a tiny bit, you will always miss either left or right depending. The best putters of ALL TIME didn't use a S.C. People who buy the hype on S.C. putters seem to also buy the hype on cars like the BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Advertising does work. Arnold Palmer, one of the all time best putters, used a Wilson 8802 and Bobby Jones used a putter that nobody would dream of using these days. So, enjoy your flat stick. It's just a hunk of metal that makes you feel good and when you feel good about your putter, that's a good thing.
You should never sand or try to refinish the face by hand. It may look flat to the naked eye but is not. Therefore your putts will not roll true consistently. This putter will need a face remill to fix it.
Hey dude, that finish isn’t going to last long. The paint he used is probably for cars, even if it had a clear on it, it would still get compromised. I’m an up and coming youtuber but I mainly do golf club customizations! If you have Instagram go check out some of my work @proamcustoms send it to me and I will refinish it with cerakote which is an extremely durable finish that is actually used on firearms! Let me know if you are interested! Thanks
I hate seeing people doing this, you see them on ebay with the cerakote finish sacrilege. Ive got an original no.5, no pitting on shaft, head still in good condition and always re-grip with original cameron grips, why paint a putter!!! It should be blued, just got an original Spalding t.p mills that somebody had restored and improved by bluing it instead of the original finish that Spalding used, painting is just a big no no
You spray painted the putter... It WILL chip. Getting a putter to a matte finish would be requires you to oxidize it. I would NEVER go to your buddies shop... HE SPRAY PAINTED YOUR PUTTER!!
Yea, but Scotty charges $300 - $400 to refinish a putter like that. I know, bc I've got a 2001 model Scotty Santa Fe. It looks like the Newport. I bought it new in 2001 for about $150. Now I just wish I would have taken better care of it... Its got a few dings in it, and a little bit of rust. But it still puts like it's supposed to.
Cringe. That was a very sloppy refinish and paint job by your friend. That original black pearl finish is one that is longer offered by Scotty Cameron or hardly any 3rd party refinishers. The value of that putter went down $100-$150 from that work but as long as you like it, that's cool.
Powder coating will give you much better durability. Still a nice refresh, and does what you wanted, well done.
Done a decent job, looks fine and if you are happy, that’s all that matters. I fell in love with my Studio Design Scotty 17 years ago and its still a wand . Mine had a few blemishes, so have now cleaned the black coating away and it’s still magic. Great vid thanks!

Nice job. Wonder if a clear coat should have been put over the paint to protect it?
Get the oil can finish put back on it .. try Chris Finch golf he works wonders on them ...
Hi Matt, I use the exact same putter every golf game. It still has the Oil Can finish. The shaft is a little pitted but doesn't effect the use.
If the paint doesn't hold up I'd suggest you use a product called "cerakote" it's an extremely durable spray on ceramic finish used in the firearms industry here in the USA. Looks smart! I was expecting a monster when you took the cover off!
I was when we were doing it.
I disagree. Looks like a 10 yr old did it at school..
Should have just sent it to the custom shop for a proper job
I had the almost exact same story with the exact same putter except I didn't refinish mine. I bought another one about 3 years ago and vowed to never lose it again.
Lajosi had an early stainless putter that struck the ball with so much energy, ideally a Lajosi stainless for wet greens and a Scotty for dry greens.
Have you done a follow up video to this since we have been out of lockdown? Be interesting to see how it feels
Should have gone to Chris Finch? Not a bad job but the original oilcan finish is great. Mine is a little worn but still regular use of gun oil keeps it in play. 👍
My first Scotty was a Studio 5 as well. I had it stolen at my local golf course in the early 2000's.
For me, it is also a Scotty Cameron putter. Mine is a GOLO 6 that I bought new in late 2015 or early 2016. At $410 it is the most expensive club I have ever bought and I still don’t regret it.
Good putter you have there
Looks great!!! Hope the paint holds up!
Thanks William......fingers crossed!
Still using my original. I love the gun metal finish. Oil cloth still works magic.
I used to love putting the oil on and seeing the finish looking great with all the different colours
The putter looks great Matt
thanks Brian, its a nice little putter
To be honest it looks damn fine to me. The paint will likely chip through time as you say unless its been some sort of special chop resistant type, Take note to give it lots of TLC when on the course; swipe it clean before putting it back in the cover. Thanks Joe, I'll ask him about that
That paint won’t last I’m afraid. Cerakote is the best paint to use. We can do it
nice, how does the putter feel after the refinishing...
needs to be re-done , that looks terrible, the white letters are smeared, and the black coat looks like orange peel
I have a custom x12 with a welded flow neck
I got the company that carried out the work to paint the whole thing black
I hated the colour so i have pulled it apart myself and am going to paint the wings back to original colour
Im going to use hard stuff enamel paint

I love the monochrome, looks better than the original
It sure does can't wait to use it for a round
Great look if you want it to last take it to a shop that does powder coating it is much more durable and won't chip. Love the look though!
How is the paint on this a year on?

Looks awesome, love the colour scheme as black and white would be my choice as well!😀
Of course - a Matt finish!
gunmetal finish looks much betta
Looks great. I don’t know what material Scotty uses, so electrostatic painting might not have worked. If so, the paint would probably never come off.
Yeah I'm not sure, will just have to see how it holds up!
Looks fantastic. I just bought an original Scotty Futura off eBay in pretty good condition.
I know a man who could re paint it for you.......
Very good work Matt
Good one !!
'next' time, ya know after this paint job is chipped up, maybe try powder coating, I believe it is a 'harder' finish ...
I"ll keep that in mind, thanks Owen

It look ok... I probably would have love multi color as filler paint at the bottom.
Why do u say u shouldnt have done it? It's brilliant!
By the way Solvol Autosol metal polish is really good on chrome
What type of putter would you recommend for. 12 handicapper? I use a bullseye now because I like the way they look. But I don't think this is very forgiving for me.

The mallets are forgiving. The Cleveland Huntington’s are usually touted as great value

Yeah the stuff he does looks great
Think would have gone for a silver text. White looks a bit tipex on the bottom
Looks decent that mate 👌
Great job Matt.Lets hope it works.
I hope so, time will tell....

That feeling I get is with my Oddysey White Hot 2 ball blade wouldn't get rid of of it for the world
i think you said it best..."i shouldn't have done this" Should have left it raw...
Looks class mate! Very stealthy and sharp looking, giving me ideas for my own ebay putter project 🤣
Give it a go see how it turns out!
Love my scotty to,things of beauty or is that just sad lol
Huh? Im sorry but why did you say u shouldn't have done this again!?? Looks stunning
I'm sure you've heard by now but you should have done a bake on ceramic type paint, like the ones for painting firearms
You done well pal
Any updates?
If Scotty Camerons are so good, why so many for sale on Ebay? People need the money or their not that good? I would like to know owners views.
Looks great to me...hope it works well.
Time will tell wayne, looks good can't wait to get it on the greens.
It looks better than it did but the chips will do your head in. Get it up to Chris Finch to do a proper job on it.
Beautiful Matt!! Very nice job :-)
All Mikes work really I was just the director 😂
Great content matt! Looks class id have had abit of primrose and blue for the mighty wire!
Thats a great idea
@@Mattfryergolf ill be customising mine when i get my set haha after all its always our year 😎😂
Matt if it doesn’t last contact golf irons Uk there work is mega mate
Thanks Jamie, i'll remember their name.
Matt Fryer Golf or Chris finch

brave or stupid same thing right haha
Yep, Scotty Cameron Newport 2 T22
Great putter

Should have powder coated it rather than painting. Powder coating will last for a very long time
Matt rub the pitted shaft with tinfoil it will take away some of the pitting
I'll give that a try, thanks Kevin
Send this to Chris Finch and undo this disaster
I've been considering for years to send my 20 year old Newport Mid-Slant to Scotty for a refurbish but I just can't get over the $300-400 price.
Jonathan Ehlers chris finch at Preston is the man to do it.
@@robertnicholasrobinson9407 Looked him up and he does awesome work but sadly I live in the States.
Jonathan Ehlers sorry Jonathan I should have picked that up from the $!
You spray painted the putter... It WILL chip. Getting a putter to a matte finish would be requires you to oxidize it.
I would NEVER go to your buddies shop... HE SPRAY PAINTED YOUR PUTTER!!
its carbon steel, you should just put gun blue on the raw finish and the metal itself would have turned black, instead of a paint that can chip.
I fear the worst!
I did but it's not turned out too bad!!
Scotty Cameron costs for refurb are ridiculous
Scotty Cameron will refurbish a club. Not cheep but they do.
You should powdercoat it.
Fyi: you completely screwed the weighting of your putter, meaning scotty may not refinish your putter.
Why didn’t you take it to a professional metal worker? I believe the club was anodized?
I never rip my headcovers off that way. This putter is doomed
Shouldn't 'have' done this. Not "of". 😊👍
my grammer isn't the best haha
"Grammar". lol sorry.
Tony Reeve 😂
Should have sent it to me for a gun blue
Send it back to Scotty Cameron bru
I should't HAVE done this
Nearly, Kev. Shouldn’t have.
You should tape it off and sandblast the face.

I love your vids Matt, but you can't have glaring mistakes in the title.
jr golfing with a Scotty Cameron putter= silver spoon life. You have zero concept of what you're pushing, do you ? Brag much ?
