- An easy way to replace missing or add eyes to soft plastic fishing lures.
Adding or Replacing Eyes on Soft plastic Fishing Lures
Tools and Materials List
35-50lb Monofilament fishing Line
Gas lighter either cigarette or kitchen type
Scissors
Small forceps
Black Marker
Cocktail stick or toothpick
Sequins
These can be bought online from ebay or in sewing or hobby stores in small quantities for one of two dollars which will probably last the average fisherman a lifetime. For the larger part of the eyes I use holographic sequins and black for the Pupil. There are a vast range of sizes and types available. I have used yellow with black pupils on perch style soft plastics and sometimes domed sequins which give a 3d look. If you a prepared to go the extra mile adding a drop of five minute epoxy or uv cure really gives that professional look.
I agree with Dieter! Typical "why haven`t I thought about this" idea :). Thx for sharing it with us Paul !!
i am sorry we do not have barracuda in the uk and i have never made a barracuda tube lure. I am glad you like the videos
this is so tight! i could listen to you talk all day about making lures. cheers paul, cheers!
Without doubt the most ingenious lure maker, problem solver ,on you tube .Why can we not have politicians of the same calibre . Bloody brilliant I have now started to make lures partly inspired by you and solar mikko ????? should be at your level in about 200 years .Bravo keep em coming Paul.
I live less than a couple of miles from where Ringo was born and grew up, cheers
Great video I have noticed that on bad days out fishing the predatory fish they investigate more when using a soft plastic with eyes it makes it look more realistic , even on the good days you get more strikes ,it is a advantage absolutely in my mind...
i used them on some 1" drop shot soft plastic worm/fish things, the line in the middle is great for keeping them on the hook. thanks for taking the time to comment
I added some eyes to very small drop shot fish/worm things and did quiet with the perch. But i do like it when the pike rip them up. cheers
Perfect, no more fishing with eyeless soft plastic lures for me. Thanks!
Neat idea Paul that could be used on all sorts of plastics.
You are the best at making lure
Well done and thank you for posting. I have used sequins as eyes in the past on hard and soft lures. I super glued them in place and used a paint marker or permanent marker to make the pupil. I think this method that you have shown makes a more 3 dimensional and neater eye on the lure. A little more time and effort this way, but a more appealing result. Perhaps the fish do not care, but I like it.
Thanks, I sometimes forget I have made these older videos, but I still find I use these a lot on soft plastics because I use jigheads with a keeper hook on to hold the lure and this can be hooked around the line that joins the eyes so it never slides off or down the hook. Also sometimes i just use a single treble and hook it around that piece of fishing line to give a really random action when retrieving
I admire your work very much. You sound a bit like Ringo Starr...in a good way. Keep 'em coming.
Bloody great tip Paul thanks for sharing. Excellent idea. I wish i had seen this video before i bought 300 stick on eyes. Oh well i'm sure they will come in handy one day.
Excellent Paul. Can't wait to watch your next vid
Hi, Paul. Yes, I did it and I have 3D eyes. But you are very good for explaining these things. Greetings from Venezuela.
I use Envirotex lite epoxy to coat balsa lures and have never given them any coats of uv protection. I have never had a problem as i suspect they would only get damaged if left stored in sunlight for long periods. I have five year old lures that have not yellowed at all but the uk is not the sunniest country we tend to make a lot of rain Cheers
Nicely done! Exactly what I was looking for. You can do the same with the stick on yes if you put a hole in them. They are slightly nicer than the sequins, in my opinion. They have a round shape. That's about it.
nice video,i usually use pretty small size plastics like 1.5" most the time.sometimes they will last a while before needing replaced.but if a pickerel gets a hold of it,sometimes it's totaly destroyed
Thanks
Paul , you always amaze me with your ideas , so simple , but yet so effective !
Only bad thing for me is , that such lures often don't last for very long in our local river , .......lots of zander , but also lots of snags , probably not even worthwile this simple effort ?
thanks
Thanks for sharing the video.
Nice job. Plain and simple - always the best way to go if you have the skills. :)
This mans videos are fantastic!!
I use envirotex epoxy on my hard lures, it is often sold as envirotex lite, Thanks
great idea here. For long term protection of the eyes they make a really cheap super easy to use product called Sally Hansen hard as nails polish. It dries completely clear and as named is hard as nails. Take your plastics and swab the eyes with a dab of this stuff and they basically will not fall off for the life of the plastic. This product will also touch up any scratched finishes and restore luster to old lures. Mostly any store that sells nail polish carries this product and its only $3.99 for a bottle.
When i grow up i want to paint like Mikko
Cheers
Hello Paul. I have some siliconics here, but they hasn't eyes. Then with this idea they wont be more blind. Thanks.
Nice video paul!
i like when they get their tails bitten off i used to have a collection of the wounded until i melted them down,
Cheers
Hugs from Brazil. I really like your videos.
simple but genius argain nice!!!!
i think it is because i uploads them as private and then add the annotations and stuff before making them public, just a glitch but thanks for letting me know. Cheers
Another great video Paul! Someday I need to get a video camera and post some videos of the stuff I have made.
Tight lines.
Scott
Don't like fishing these plastics too much , but they are almost the only way to attract the zander in that tidal "Elbe" river , ...but very frustrating to lose 5 lures within half an hour , if you're unexperienced or you've hit the wrong spot , .....you're re-tieing most of the time rather than fishing .
Hence my little aversion for plastics , I reckon , LOL .
Greetz , Dieter
i keep saying i am going to get a proper camera, i am using compacts at the moment and it can be a bit of a nightmare.I would say film it with what ever you can hands on and worry about the rest later. Thanks
Paul. Pańskie pomysły są świetne. Dziękuję i pozdrawiam.
