Try as I might I just cant call this art. It is more engineering and physics and fluid dynamics. the better you are at those things the better your lures come out. Even colours get scientific when you look at the interaction with water colouration and such. it is for sure science over art.
I’m 75 living in a small apt and no room for a shop or equipment. You gave me the gift of participating in this project with you. Thank you so much. If I have to pursue hobbies vicariously I delight when a craftsman like yourself brings me along via media. What a wonderful day in the shop, and how beautiful the results! Thank you again.
Just wanted to share something with you, I really enjoy your channel and the info you give us. I live in Fla. and now I'm 63 yrs.old my father was a avid salt and fresh water fisherman and in the early 60s started using a injection molding machine to make clear 2 part fishing lures which he would mold from live fish i.e. Pinfish and other Baitfish. the 2 sided body's were clear and he would put different insert's in i.e. silver foil and sometimes glitter and glue the body's together and then add the line tie and hook hardware. I always felt that he was way ahead of his time because i'm not even sure if Mirrolure was doing that at that time. Sadly because of having children and having to raise a family he was never able to expand on what he was doing or even market it. Remember at that time almost all lures were made of wood. He also dabbled in make plastic worms but the plastic at that time was not that soft but he still made some. I still wonder to this day what would have happened if he had the financial resources to continue and expand. It brings to mind the old saying that everything that is old is new again. Thanks for letting me share.
If you published a book on all your engineering calculations for building lures, I'd be at the front of the line to purchase one! I know what you're doing is simple for folks who have Degrees. But, I find it quite amazing how one can know so much about applying weight, and balancing a lure, before even so much as whittling the first notch!

You answered the question perfectly franco thank you 👌 the duplicate lures look brilliant, would be interesting too see a video on making the same lure but scaled up to like 6 or 7" and then another video on how to adjust the new scaled up version into a jointed swim bait 👍👍 3 different baits all from the one original design 👍👍 keep em coming great content!

Best channel for those looking to start with lure making. Great watch. Thank you! Can you give a few more details on how you actually do the silver plating?
Just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos. I build custom flyrods, rebuild vintage (bamboo) fly rods; tie bass, trout, and salmon flies, and have been making bass lures for about 30 years now. I know quality work when I see it. I enjoy your work. Good on ya!

Brother you are the king. you have solved all of my problems. I have spent a good 200.000 NZD on purchasing lures. Thank you brother LOVE your channel. Your channel does not deserve a like, It deserves a LOVE bro. Honestly
I would so love to do this with a fire tiger husky jerk. They are so hard to find in stores anymore. But my painting skills just are good enough to reproduce that one of a kind color scheme. It's probably a confidence thing, but I can out fish just about every fire tiger variation with a rapala. I've tried the cheap lures I've tried the expensive ones, rapala fire tiger always wins, typically by over 5 to one, all other things being equal. Maybe someday I'll get the painting process figured out. That's a fantastic replica, you have to update us after on the water experiments and see if it fishes as well as the original. Great job!
Can't believe I stumbled across this particular video of yours. The Rapala Twitching Rap is my absolute favorite juvenile tarpon lure. They love it! I am dumbfounded that Rapala quit making such an awesome lure. The biggest problem with it is that I think it is made of balsa wood and is easily damaged. Especially by such an aggressive and hard fighting fish as the tarpon. Since they don't make it anymore it is the only lure in my box that I won't share. I've never used the chrome version though. If you want to test the effectiveness of your lure compared to the original send me a couple and I will put it to the test! Super cool and informative video.
Simply brilliant, I loved the Rapala Glidin Rap for Pike I have a green chrome, 12 years old had dozens of fish also discontinued would love to make a run with some nature pike colours.
Before this video got into it I want to say that I'm a person not too much into detail. Detail is something I've always not been too good at. I have engineers as relatives and I know there's much detail involved.
awesome just what i wanted to learn about, i fish and have 3D printers it just occurred to me i could make my own lures when i lost my favorite lures and they didnt make anymore. thank you
Definitely subscribing to this channel! I’m not an engineer yet, but studying mechanical engineering and I love to fish and am old enough to have seen some favorites discontinued. That being said, I just took Statics last semester and I’m trying to think about what little I learned regarding fluid displacement in that course to apply it to understanding your volume calculation. In that class, we only used that concept to focus on the forces applied to the submerged body by the water column above it and the water surrounding it by integration. How does the displaced water volume directly correlate to it’s weight on the scale? It seems like it would be pushed in all directions, not just the -y-direction measured by the scale.
It must be this: “Buoyancy and flotation are based on Archimedes' principle, which states that the force, called the buoyant force, that lifts (buoys) upward a floating or submerged body in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid that would be in the volume displaced by the fluid.” The body of the lure is equal and oppositely pushing against the upward buoyancy force downward to the scale. That’s why you say you’re holding it as steady as possible, to get the most accurate reading. The reading is most accurate when the lure is held completely still. Very cool.
Awesome video, Love using a variety of lures... So much work to make them' I did not know what was intaled... So I will from now on appreciate my lures by remembering what went in to them.... Fantastic video.... LOVE IT..... and subbed.... 😊❤
Excellent instructions and clear know how. Only advice i would give is your video is very "bright" or really white. Try darken it a little, it hard to make out some of the details in the cups and lure when your making it.
I haven't gotten into making molds yet, but I am tucking away information just in case! I've seen you do that water volume displacement before, just haven't figured out how to plug it into my process to be able to use it. Starting to use your density per CM to calculate weight though.
Any chance of trying out that hollow body frog? I think I went I little hard trying to sell the idea before before, but I really do think it would be a great video and it's a cool process. Really enjoyed this video looking forward to the next one!

Hello sir, first and foremost i love your videos. Have you tried SB paint on plastic? i purchased every color that Lureworks sold. I'm hoping that the SB airbrush paint that is designed to work with plastisol will work. I need that bright aluminum or chrome color for the internals of baitfish.
Hey, I always appreciate your videos. They are very informative and detailed. But I am having trouble finding Allumilite Microballoons. And I was wondering while I am searching for another product, if there is a difference between Glass Microspheres and Phenolic MicroBalloon? Just wondering because, I don't see either name on the Allumilite container you used and I don't want to spend money on something wrong. Thanks in advance.
Good as always, thanks so much! About polyuretan resin density, 0.9 x ml, How did you get this info, resin "user manual"? About spraying Chrome, could you please explain in details all ingredients Needed? Sorry to mind here where i am living we dont have easy products reperibility as over there in Florida, I found a spray Chrome set that works with the gun that you show, that takes 4 different chemical ingredients, 3 of them come with hardener. What about your system, how many ingredients, how many of them come with hardener? Thanks so much for your excellent work!!!!!!

You can’t buy that badger ghost golden yellow anymore in USA. Any other suggestions for a gold chrome? I’m literally buying every gold on the market and can’t find one I like.
Hi Franco, Basically you showed as 2 main ways to calculate lures volume: 1-By math, through the density of a given material 2- by weight, submerge the lure in water, weighting the water displacement. In your videos you did this 2nd method in 2 different ways, as you are showing in this video or through a "pipe system". I tried to experimenting a lot doing multiple times volume measurement of the same lure through the above mentioned 3 ways and I always end up with differences of 1.5 to 2 grms between these 3 different methods. It sounds a lot, I was expecting smaller numbers, differences of less than a gr, my tests repeated several times proved wrong. "Big" differences like this are normal? Probably the volume calculation through material density is the more reliable method, what do you think? Thanks 🙏 a lot is never enough!!!!!!!
There can be quite a bit of variation when you use the overflow water displacement method. I have found that the calculated density/volume method is most accurate if (big if) you are accurate with your measurements and have a good scale with a display to two decimal points (1/100 of a gram). I have been showing the weight in water method lately because I think the average craft person can get the best results that way. But, you have to be carful with surface bubbles and touching the bottom or sides of the container. And, again, a good scale is important.
Thanks, I got good scale, 2 decimal points and I use a large deep container, touching sides or bottom is not a problem. bubbles I don't know, I don't see any, in any case I always add one drop of soap as you told. One final question sorry, Cause the most reliable method should be through material density, how do you calculate it in case of resin lure: Do you cast a cube of ONLY resin? measuring then volume and weight or Do you cast a cube of resin and microbaloons then do measurement? Thanks 🙏 so much!
I sometimes search on chinese market sites to find a cheap lures even though it would takes a long time to deliver. But unfortunately they don't copy those , or I can not find them.
is this a "FOAM Bait"? Or something else? I went whole hog on foam baits and couldn't make a single one I could actually Paint because of the continuous gassing and bubbles...even after weeks it just would not hold paint.
Hi Franco, About micro baloons and the quantities that you suggest, 8-10%. Here i cant find plolyuretanic resin as the One that you use, 2 components 1:1 ratio. As a fast cure I commonly find and use polyester resin (if i get It right plolyuretanic and polyester are practically the same, same main chemical Comp, differences in clarity, hardness, how they can stand scratch, etc). My polyester resin must be mix with 2% hardener, After several test i commonly use 1% cause the hot weater that we have here in Thailand. The fact Is, mix 8% of micro baloons Is practically impossible, more than 5% the consistency of my resin turns too tick, impossible to poor, By the way my resin Is not dense at all , i wonder how your mix it turns? How you can mix 10% of micro baloons and still be able to poor? Thanks
Thanks, i tried 3 different brand of polyester, all are rated for casting, low viscosity and still, more than 5% of micro baloons, almost impossible to poor, if i manage to do it they trap Bubbles cause to tick. One more question Sorry, the polyuretan resin that you use, without micro baloons, does It float? The 3 that I tried, without baloons, sink
@@lannabulls yes...it has a specific gravity of around 0.8. When you look for a casting resin try find one with a specific gravity less than 1 or as close to 1 as possible.
I can't copy the favorite bait or find another one. It was made in the late 80s by strike king it's a buzz bait with a clear 3 blade prop out of clear plastic. I don't see any clear props on the market anymore. I still catch fish on it but I'd hate to loose it and not be able to get another one. Any help?
After watching the vid I saw someone last week suggest adding a second ring between the lure body and hook I know this would change the weight but that could be calculated in when you're making a custom lure like this. The reason they said to add these was it of course makes the hook hang lower but also makes it so the hook can rotate almost 360⁰ and therefore the fish tend to stay on the hook better. What do you think about this?
I don't agree. Most fish shake the hook and they can do it using the inertia of the lure. They instinctively know to get their heads out of the water so they can shake their heads with a powerful acceleration. Extending the lure out from the point of connection can increase the inertia of the lure during the head shake and result in the fish throwing the lure. In fact, I use short shank lures to improve my odds.

Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, good info. Lure test was missing!
Some under water shots would have been nice...
Thanks for sharing this video with us Franco :)
Buenas tardes señor, que material usa?? Le pregunto porque no se inglés 😢
Utilizo una resina de dos componentes para hacer los señuelos. Lo puedes encontrar aquí:

You can’t buy that badger ghost golden yellow anymore in USA. Any other suggestions for a gold chrome? I’m literally buying every gold on the market and can’t find one I like.
Createx transparent sunrise yellow.
Thanks so much I have that and will give it a shot 🙏 love your channel keep up the great content
What is this microbaloons and what is this A and B components? Thanks

Hi Franco,
Basically you showed as 2 main ways to calculate lures volume:
1-By math, through the density of a given material
2- by weight, submerge the lure in water, weighting the water displacement.
Thanks,
I got good scale, 2 decimal points and I use a large deep container, touching sides or bottom is not a problem. bubbles I don't know, I don't see any, in any case I always add one drop of soap as you told.
One final question sorry,
Cause the most reliable method should be through material density, how do you calculate it in case of resin lure:
Do you cast a cube of ONLY resin? measuring then volume and weight
or
Do you cast a cube of resin and microbaloons then do measurement?
Thanks 🙏 so much!
That silver finish is wicked cool. Have you done a video showing that?
Yes I have
@@EngineeredAngler Adding that to my watch later!
I like yours more than the original.
Great video ++
Interesting do the rapala originals have silver on them or is it chrome?
They use chrome...but that process is much more complicated.
@@EngineeredAngler Cool I’m guess this is the same process they used back in WWII to silver plate? I’d like to have a few guns silver or gold plated.
@@EngineeredAngler Is it possible for you to show us how to do the chroming process?
I sometimes search on chinese market sites to find a cheap lures even though it would takes a long time to deliver. But unfortunately they don't copy those , or I can not find them.
Çok güzel emek ve bilgi dolu bir çalışma olmuş.
Kutluyorum.
Mümkünse 9.6 gr yapılan ile avlanma videosu görebilir miyiz?
Selamlar
is this a "FOAM Bait"? Or something else? I went whole hog on foam baits and couldn't make a single one I could actually Paint because of the continuous gassing and bubbles...even after weeks it just would not hold paint.
Two part casting resin
@@EngineeredAngler so casting resin mold and casting resin bait/lure?
The mold is silicone.
@EngineeredAngler, How different are those lures made of Balsa wood or even a similar wood?
sorry not sure what your asking...
Can we use epoxy primer as base coat on lure
Dose it leave a perfectly glassy finish? If yes then you can use it.
Hi Franco,
About micro baloons and the quantities that you suggest, 8-10%.
Thanks
Resins that are formulated for casting have a lower viscosity and can handle the added micro balloons and still pour.
Have your ever painted a Paul brown corky, if you have what paint do you use and how do you seal it ?
No I haven't...
I can't copy the favorite bait or find another one. It was made in the late 80s by strike king it's a buzz bait with a clear 3 blade prop out of clear plastic. I don't see any clear props on the market anymore. I still catch fish on it but I'd hate to loose it and not be able to get another one. Any help?

How does the silver plating process work?
I have put several videos on my channel demonstrating the process
Thank you Sir! Really good one!
Countdown to 30k! LFG! (Should be 100k)
It should totally be 100k! Right?
Stunning work.
Thank you! Cheers!
I think the Vaseline is making my silicone mold sticky. Any suggestions.
It's probably not the Vaseline...but you can try mold release spray.
Wow I didn't know about the 3m sand paper👍
