Because "boys" is the only targeted group he and his mostly white male audience used to be a part of. He never was or will ever be Asian or Native, and meninists don't usually see anorexia or intoxicated rape as a problem that can affect men too unless it can be said as a gotcha in response to women talking about these issues. Most of the guys offended by the boys t-shirt would likely call women and POC overly sensitive for being anywhere near that offended by any of the other shirts. I agree that the shirt is dumb and adult humor applied to children, but have you y'all *seen* the aggressively gendered baby shirts and onesies with boomer humor quotes like "Ladies, I have arrived" or "Does this diaper make my butt look big?" printed on them? It's dumb, but pretty normalized even today.

If an adult gave you that journal, a kids' reaction is usually, 'If a grownup approved of this, it must be okay.' The failure here isn't the kids, it's the adults who thought it'd be cute to sell inappropriate jokes to kids. They thought, 'Isn't it cute how little girls and boys hate each other? Let's make merch of that?' Never considering that, maybe there'd be LESS of that if it wasn't intentionally normalized.

theres a very ironic pattern ive observed with a lot of racists where theyll appear to love aspects of another culture, but then also belittle the people the culture is from. an example being there were a few guy students (they all knew each other) @ my old high school who were Sooo nauseatingly immature. i'd overhear them make comments about the asian girl students, calling them all sorts of names including the c slur, but at the same time they loved reading manga and would obsess over anime girls? ??😭😭shit used to trip me & my friends out BADD LMFAO.

As an Asian American, I wonder if the reason as to why the really racist shirts didn’t get as addressed in the public eye is because racism towards Asians in white america is kinda seen as “acceptable”.
Faux Asian accents, China man jokes, and racist t shirts kinda just… happen and when I try to explain why they make me feel uncomfortable to my white people I know it’s definitely a bit of an argument. I think there’s a sentiment that you “can’t” be racist towards Asians in America. I’m not really sure why, but it’s just something I’ve noticed. I’ve had to explain to people my age why you shouldn’t call actual humans “oriental”.
The response usually isn’t embarrassment or “Oh shit ok”. It’s usually more “Well, the orient refers to the west,” or “Well Asian people call themselves that”. Well I’m Asian and I’m telling you I don’t :/

I doesn't surprise me that during that time the more concerning t-shirts (like the heavily racist ones and the one with "except when I'm drunk") weren't the ones to recieve backlash. It may only have happened in my circle, but I remember the 2000s being really mean-spirited, in the sense that unlike nowadays corcerning yourself about certain subjects like consent and mental health made people call you exaggerated or too sensitive. Only a person who is already controversial during that time would've made people notice other problematic stuff. That's why this story disappoints me but doesn't surprise me either. It was two decades ago but the contrasting differences to what's considered sensitive nowadays make me loose a little hope

I take it more as a sign of progress, personally. Most of us KNOW this stuff isn't good now, and the majority of peoples' reactions are gonna be a similar amount of discomfort or disgust, and those whose reactions are anything else are seen as in the wrong. What was once seen as just "edgy" is now seen for what it actually is: gross and insensitive attempts at humor under the guise of dark comedy.

This reminds me of something I went through in middle school that is honestly so stupid that it feels like something I made up. On my first day of middle school, I wore one of those Happy Bunny shirts that said, "I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter." Apparently, one of the cheerleaders in my class block somehow took offense to my shirt and made it her life goal to absolutely ruin my life. She befriended me, himg out with the group of friends I ate lunch with, and then slowly poisoned the water by spreading rumors about me and talking behind my back. By the end of the year, I was a social pariah with no friends, and it was bad enough that no one wanted to be my friend the next year either.
    👏Over 👏a 👏Happy 👏Bunny 👏Shirt! 👏
Bro, cancel culture today has nothing on how we treated each other in the early 2000s. We all just kind of low-key hated everyone while picking who this week's Villian was. Glad we've evolved since then, even if it's just by a smidge.
