The failure here isn't the kids, it's the adults who thought it'd be cute to sell inappropriate jokes to kids. They thought, 'Isn't it cute how little girls and boys hate each other? As an Asian American, I wonder if the reason as to why the really racist shirts didn’t get as addressed in the public eye is because racism towards Asians in white america is kinda seen as “acceptable”.
Faux Asian accents, China man jokes, and racist t shirts kinda just… happen and when I try to explain why they make me feel uncomfortable to my white people I know it’s definitely a bit of an argument. I think there’s a sentiment that you “can’t” be racist towards Asians in America. I’m not really sure why, but it’s just something I’ve noticed. I’ve had to explain to people my age why you shouldn’t call actual humans “oriental”.
The response usually isn’t embarrassment or “Oh shit ok”. It’s usually more “Well, the orient refers to the west,” or “Well Asian people call themselves that”. Well I’m Asian and I’m telling you I don’t :/

I doesn't surprise me that during that time the more concerning t-shirts (like the heavily racist ones and the one with "except when I'm drunk") weren't the ones to recieve backlash. It may only have happened in my circle, but I remember the 2000s being really mean-spirited, in the sense that unlike nowadays corcerning yourself about certain subjects like consent and mental health made people call you exaggerated or too sensitive. Only a person who is already controversial during that time would've made people notice other problematic stuff. That's why this story disappoints me but doesn't surprise me either. It was two decades ago but the contrasting differences to what's considered sensitive nowadays make me loose a little hope

I take it more as a sign of progress, personally. Most of us KNOW this stuff isn't good now, and the majority of peoples' reactions are gonna be a similar amount of discomfort or disgust, and those whose reactions are anything else are seen as in the wrong. What was once seen as just "edgy" is now seen for what it actually is: gross and insensitive attempts at humor under the guise of dark comedy.

This reminds me of something I went through in middle school that is honestly so stupid that it feels like something I made up. On my first day of middle school, I wore one of those Happy Bunny shirts that said, "I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter." Apparently, one of the cheerleaders in my class block somehow took offense to my shirt and made it her life goal to absolutely ruin my life. She befriended me, himg out with the group of friends I ate lunch with, and then slowly poisoned the water by spreading rumors about me and talking behind my back. By the end of the year, I was a social pariah with no friends, and it was bad enough that no one wanted to be my friend the next year either.
    👏Over 👏a 👏Happy 👏Bunny 👏Shirt! 👏

i think the shirt is not a good message for kids, i think we should teach that any sexism is bad obviously. but also i think its worth mentioning that if a boy wore a "girls are stupid, throw rocks at them" shirt, there WOULD be a difference since little boys are genuinely likely to throw rocks at little girls (happened to me LOL) but growing up it hasnt really happened the other way around, because a girl would get into so much more trouble over it than a boy would.

@Raphe9000 its bad both ways, its not worse either way. girls in my elementary school would get put on the same "plans" just for being talkative that boys got put on for being genuinely violent. boys would never get punished properly because it was seen as something that was unavoidable and part of their nature, and thats the same reason boys were expected to just "suck it up" whenever it happened to them.

Every weird girl tween at that time knew about the “Come to the dark side, we have cookies” t shirt - I had one, another than said “come to the dork side, we have video games” and a plethora of “quirky” stuff. I still wear some of it as pjs! I remember wondering where it had gone in recent years but had no idea about the brands past. They did a good job, at least in the UK, of distancing themselves from it and just being seen as off-beat. I feel bad about dropping so much money on a brand that still makes offensive stuff, even if I didn’t know until now!

That's the thing. Todd did for clothing what Eminem did for rap, and that was having a penchant for controversy. But by the mid 2010s, D&G was steering more towards 'kawaii' designs that, while they still maintained a sense of quirky postmodern humour, it was a far cry from the halcyon days of being ultra-edgy to the point that it exploited stereotypes. Cakes With Faces is similar to the later, less-controversial cutesy D&G designs, but does not have the same baggage, and has designs that are even properly inspired by Japan and their kawaii scene.
