The story of Steven Universe fans driving a girl to suicide is fake, but the fact that the Internet used this story to make the fandom look bad is pretty malicious. Same can't be said with Undertale's "cupcake needle" incident. Boy, I do feel bad for the fact that Steven Universe's reputation got destroyed by the Internet, specifically for those rant videos.

From the reader x human!bill fanfics i've read, I think being an evil demon is such an integral part of his personality that if you for some reason wanted to remove that you could just project whatever ideal personality you want on him and it wouldnt feel any more out of character. One controversy I def feel bad about is the Peter Pan craze on tumblr where so many of us got a crush on the cast member of Peter Pan at DisneyLand that someone ended up finding who the actor was and he ended up losing his job since Disney is really hard-core about cast members not revealing to the public their real names in order to 'keep the magic alive'

Yeah I think a lot of the criticism got very personal very fast. Like, it’s fine to say that you don’t want to read a teenage girls story written by a man, because it’s kind of creepy or you just don’t feel like he can do it justice. But to call him a p*dophile over it and accuse him of brainwashing young girls, especially when it was based on his real life friend (who was a teenage girl), is super personal and crosses a line in my book. I also felt the same way with turtles all the way down. Obviously, you don’t have to like it, and if you don’t like how he writes mental illness that’s a perfectly valid opinion. But a lot of people accused him of trying to gentrify and glorify mental illness and take away from stories from real authors with mental illness. And when people corrected them to say that John does have OCD, people started accusing him of lying or faking it. Like i’ve said, you don’t have to like his books, and I don’t want to be one of those people who are like “oh you can’t dislike a book it’ll hurt the authors feelings”. But if the only way you can critique a book is by personally attacking the author, you’re not critiquing the book, you’re harassing someone.
I also think his response to the copypasta was super mature and it called out the kind of double standard that I found on early tumblr where it was both “uwu gay rights super progressive!!” but also “haha you’re gay” was a common insult. I don’t know how widespread it was, but I definitely remember being frustrated with it back then. And I find it funny that his response included a line that was basically “get a better insult”

The bone witch one gets even worse because the bones they were "gathering" were displaced human remains from people who had been buried in the ground. It is very hard to keep bodies in the ground in Louisiana due to how wet and marshy the soil is, especially the closer you get to the Mississippi Delta. A lot of the people buried in the ground tended to be poorer PoC who couldn't afford or weren't allowed to have those fancy above ground mausoleums that New Orleans is famous for, so unfortunately a lot of times their remains float to the surface and get washed away.

The weird thing is, I loved Tumblr pre-ban. Tumblr was active, people were normal and it was a great way to find people to Connect with. After the ban, all those people seemingly left, and now there’s only sugar daddy-bots, creeps and men thinking Tumblr is the same thing as tinder, other than that it feels so dead. Pre-ban, people would ask me what music I like. Post-ban, people wil start a conversation asking how many dildos I own.

My fav controversy was the sudden interest in 'meth tumblr' and specifically the user 'methedupsamurai'. He was a semi-attractive guy who fronted a metal band. Visually not people's idea of a heavy drug user, so he got totally woobified for some reason despite being a literal crackhead and totally acting like it. (Maybe he was a bit of a real-life tumblr sexyman.) He was huge for several months sometime in the late 2010s and then everybody turned on him when he started saying extremely transphobic things. Shocker lol

@@---nobody--- no, they didn't go back on it -- closest was that they they added "mature content flags" or something a little while back, which I think are supposed to act as a way to opt in to seeing some more mature content if you're an adult. They don't seem to do much, at least not for me as someone who is an adult. Posting nsfw stuff can still get people's posts or blogs shadowbanned in the tags, but because the site is held together by dental floss and staff seems more concerned with making merch than moderating their site or dealing with the pornbot scourge, people find a way. like how the proana communities izzy mentioned are still VERY active despite being against ToS and just morally reprehensible, people can navigate the restrictions easily when the moderators aren't paying much attention to new tags and censored words.
The bots that handled the porn ban were so badly programmed that, despite Tumblr staff explicitly saying text posts were still allowed and only images/videos would be moderated, thousands of text posts were banned ...Even including the post on the _official staff blog_ announcing the porn ban.

People didn’t get pick up on the joke (reading it back now, I don’t blame them 😅), so I just played into it and replied to hate asks with things like “*hisses at you*”, or “hipster blog 😡”. I’m not mad at all about its infamy- it’s actually hilarious that it’s still floating around the internet pissing people off over a decade later.

Oh, the thinspo and "self harm as an aesthetic" blogs are unfortunately common. Many gore and csa trauma blogs reblog or post pink cutesy images and the nature of the search function makes it super common to see that stuff if you just want to see cute things, unless you use 3rd party blocking features, and even then, it only works if people are tagging things appropriately. I've also been followed or messaged by thinspo blogs right after venting about weight related self esteem issues, almost like some of those people deliberately search for hurting people and try to trigger them.
my favorite fake dashcon thing was someone trying to plant the rumor that someone had a baby in the ball pit, it wasn't a serious or genuine attempt at misinformation but there was a glorious .3 seconds where it made people wonder "wait, the *what*" and i think that's beautiful

I used to be a part of the teacher crush community on Tumblr back in middle school. I got into it kind of late so I think I was spared a lot of the creepy stuff that happened, but it did encourage my behavior more than it did relieve it. The fact that the community was used by adults to talk to kids that could be considered "easy targets" so to speak is very creepy and extremely weird. I do think it's important, however, that we give kids safe spaces to talk about their feelings especially at a time in their that can be confusing and down right depressing for them. At the age "teacher crushes" usually happen, a kid could be going through many changes to their body and self esteem. Not to mention what could be going on at home. In my case, and what I feel like is a lot of other kids cases, this made me seek out any sort of validation. I developed an attraction to someone I should not be close with and that's what got me into the community. I am lucky this never led to anything serious happening, and this teacher was still a genuinely good and caring person to me, but it probably caused my self esteem to completely crash and anxiety to go haywire. Talking about it, not to the tcc but to my irl friends and counselors, helped me get better and out of this cycle of validation seeking. Social media of course isn't a good place to discuss your issues, but I think we need to help kids with these types of attractions and issues find safer ways to work through them rather than just telling them that they're cringe or wrong for really liking one of their teachers. (Not saying that's what they said in the video, just that a lot of people hold that opinion rightfully so) Sorry I know this is kinda late and I understand if what I say sounds wrong. Just wanted to talk a bit about my dark Tumblr experience ^^
Also as a teacher it’s actually quite normal developmentally for kids to develop crushes on teachers. But what’s not normal or okay is for a teacher to encourage it. Or to act on it. A teacher or any adult has the responsibility to protect their students. Children have a lot of changes going on and an adult who cares for them who’s not related to them will often be confused as someone they have romantic feelings for or an attraction. Again it’s normal but as the adults it’s our responsibility to protect the child and make sure we keep them safe.

Hearing about "All or Nothing" gave me flashbacks to the infamous Ace Discourse Era, which shoved myself and probably a lot of other asexuals and aromantics back into the closet. I think pan and bi people were also being discoursed a lot during that era too. All this fighting over who's "queer enough" and whether or not certain types of discrimination/oppression actually count and whether or not certain identities are problematic... It rotted my brain lol. The worst part is that it's still going on today, even if to a lesser extent. Sometimes I wonder if the Tumblr environment around aces/pans would be different, for better or for worst, if All or Nothing actually became a series.

A big thing I remember back when I was a tumblr user in my teenage years, was the Anorexia communities, which were super toxic and encouraged each other not to eat. It was very harmful, I understand the need for communities of people who understand each other but this was genuinely hurting each other 💔
That still exists. The "ED Community" still thrives in its lil pocket and encourages each other to stay sick and continue self harming in pursuit of unhealthy weight. Most of they have bios that basically beg people to not report them (as encouraging EDs is against ToS).
When the Tumblr suggested posts started, they were kind of broken and as part of that glitch, I got a few very disturbing pro-ana posts on my dash. Probably because I liked an intuitive eating post. So, the community still exists, at least as of last year

As someone who has never touched Tumblr and only really got into internet culture stuff by the late 2010's Interwebs is absolutely fascinating to me. The way all these old forms of social media websites are personified and act as time capsules for how those sites and their userbases were perceived at the time. On an unrelated note the choice by the general community to ship Tumblr and 4chan together is interesting to me as despite all the very obvious differences the two sites userbases had and the relative distaste each site carried for the other (at from what I've seen) they share quite a few similarities. They both want to be a sort of weirdo safe space that pushed back against any perceived outside interference, have hundreds of in jokes about all the stupid crap that's happened on their site over the years, and even began waning in popularity starting in the late 2010's in the face of newer and more popular social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and even TikTok.
I had personal experience with "Tumblr Prom"! - I was there in the trenches of awkward and earnest queer teen flirtation - and oh yes, I took part without an ounce of irony in my heart. Back around the 2010s, I "tumblr-dated" a long string of girls, one of whom was a Canadian lass deep into "bandom" who loved cheesy cutesy couple stuff, like prom pics. (Yup. "My girlfriend from Canada" cliche irl. lmaooo) She asked if I'd go to Tumblr Prom with her and I obliged, donning my second-hand blue blazer adorned with airbrushed roses straight out of the 80s, white button up, way-too-big black slacks, and a bouquet of fake black roses I had lying around. Aaaand *post*. A 15-yo emo trans boy in his tentative butch lesbian phase, young Justin Beiber haircut, with all the power and swagger of a 2-month-old puppy, doing his best tumblr sexyman pose & holding fake flowers for his most recent biannual Canadian tumblr girlfriend, a tall glass of ginger nerd grinning eagerly in a blue satin dress. Enough time has passed that the memory has become endearing rather than embarrassing. I mean, how cutely cringe is that? Online prom for baby nerds. No idea if the pics we exchanged still exist in the tumblr aether (blog is long deactivated) but they live rent-free in my head anyway. 💙 Oh, nostalgia.

I don't think anything can ever match that insane energy of DestielPutinElection day for me. one of my favorite things about the whole john green copypasta is in his response he didnt even say "men"- he said "people with penises". kind of every time i hear about john (or hank as well by that matter) i only become more of an enthusiast. I feel so bad for John green, like he honestly seems like a great guy and knowing his history with mental health issues that whole ordeal must've been awful
Yeah I think a lot of the criticism got very personal very fast. Like, it’s fine to say that you don’t want to read a teenage girls story written by a man, because it’s kind of creepy or you just don’t feel like he can do it justice. But to call him a p*dophile over it and accuse him of brainwashing young girls, especially when it was based on his real life friend (who was a teenage girl), is super personal and crosses a line in my book. I also felt the same way with turtles all the way down. Obviously, you don’t have to like it, and if you don’t like how he writes mental illness that’s a perfectly valid opinion. But a lot of people accused him of trying to gentrify and glorify mental illness and take away from stories from real authors with mental illness. And when people corrected them to say that John does have OCD, people started accusing him of lying or faking it.
Like i’ve said, you don’t have to like his books, and I don’t want to be one of those people who are like “oh you can’t dislike a book it’ll hurt the authors feelings”. But if the only way you can critique a book is by personally attacking the author, you’re not critiquing the book, you’re harassing someone.
I also think his response to the copypasta was super mature and it called out the kind of double standard that I found on early tumblr where it was both “uwu gay rights super progressive!!” but also “haha you’re gay” was a common insult. I don’t know how widespread it was, but I definitely remember being frustrated with it back then.
And I find it funny that his response included a line that was basically “get a better insult”

The bone witch one gets even worse because the bones they were "gathering" were displaced human remains from people who had been buried in the ground. It is very hard to keep bodies in the ground in Louisiana due to how wet and marshy the soil is, especially the closer you get to the Mississippi Delta. A lot of the people buried in the ground tended to be poorer PoC who couldn't afford or weren't allowed to have those fancy above ground mausoleums that New Orleans is famous for, so unfortunately a lot of times their remains float to the surface and get washed away.

The guy asking him to tag his gore is actually the lorax, hence why he didn't want to see a cut open fruit, making the Tumblr lore go full circle

This actually prompted Louisiana lawmakers to update their laws on possession of human remains to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again. My fav controversy was the sudden interest in 'meth tumblr' and specifically the user 'methedupsamurai'. He was a semi-attractive guy who fronted a metal band. (Maybe he was a bit of a real-life tumblr sexyman.) He was huge for several months sometime in the late 2010s and then everybody turned on him when he started saying extremely transphobic things. Shocker lol

They don't seem to do much, at least not for me as someone who is an adult. Posting nsfw stuff can still get people's posts or blogs shadowbanned in the tags, but because the site is held together by dental floss and staff seems more concerned with making merch than moderating their site or dealing with the pornbot scourge, people find a way. like how the proana communities izzy mentioned are still VERY active despite being against ToS and just morally reprehensible, people can navigate the restrictions easily when the moderators aren't paying much attention to new tags and censored words.

It was basically the same story as the tubby custard, where I saw a near identical post, but without the last sentence about wasting our lives on the same site. People didn’t get pick up on the joke (reading it back now, I don’t blame them 😅), so I just played into it and replied to hate asks with things like “*hisses at you*”, or “hipster blog 😡”. I’m not mad at all about its infamy- it’s actually hilarious that it’s still floating around the internet pissing people off over a decade later.

Oh, the thinspo and "self harm as an aesthetic" blogs are unfortunately common. Many gore and csa trauma blogs reblog or post pink cutesy images and the nature of the search function makes it super common to see that stuff if you just want to see cute things, unless you use 3rd party blocking features, and even then, it only works if people are tagging things appropriately.
I've also been followed or messaged by thinspo blogs right after venting about weight related self esteem issues, almost like some of those people deliberately search for hurting people and try to trigger them.
my favorite fake dashcon thing was someone trying to plant the rumor that someone had a baby in the ball pit, it wasn't a serious or genuine attempt at misinformation but there was a glorious .3 seconds where it made people wonder "wait, the *what*" and i think that's beautiful

I used to be a part of the teacher crush community on Tumblr back in middle school. I got into it kind of late so I think I was spared a lot of the creepy stuff that happened, but it did encourage my behavior more than it did relieve it. The fact that the community was used by adults to talk to kids that could be considered "easy targets" so to speak is very creepy and extremely weird. I do think it's important, however, that we give kids safe spaces to talk about their feelings especially at a time in their that can be confusing and down right depressing for them. At the age "teacher crushes" usually happen, a kid could be going through many changes to their body and self esteem. Not to mention what could be going on at home. In my case, and what I feel like is a lot of other kids cases, this made me seek out any sort of validation. I developed an attraction to someone I should not be close with and that's what got me into the community. I am lucky this never led to anything serious happening, and this teacher was still a genuinely good and caring person to me, but it probably caused my self esteem to completely crash and anxiety to go haywire. Talking about it, not to the tcc but to my irl friends and counselors, helped me get better and out of this cycle of validation seeking. Social media of course isn't a good place to discuss your issues, but I think we need to help kids with these types of attractions and issues find safer ways to work through them rather than just telling them that they're cringe or wrong for really liking one of their teachers. (Not saying that's what they said in the video, just that a lot of people hold that opinion rightfully so)

Also as a teacher it’s actually quite normal developmentally for kids to develop crushes on teachers. But what’s not normal or okay is for a teacher to encourage it. Or to act on it. A teacher or any adult has the responsibility to protect their students. Children have a lot of changes going on and an adult who cares for them who’s not related to them will often be confused as someone they have romantic feelings for or an attraction. Again it’s normal but as the adults it’s our responsibility to protect the child and make sure we keep them safe.

Hearing about "All or Nothing" gave me flashbacks to the infamous Ace Discourse Era, which shoved myself and probably a lot of other asexuals and aromantics back into the closet. I think pan and bi people were also being discoursed a lot during that era too. All this fighting over who's "queer enough" and whether or not certain types of discrimination/oppression actually count and whether or not certain identities are problematic... It rotted my brain lol. The worst part is that it's still going on today, even if to a lesser extent. Sometimes I wonder if the Tumblr environment around aces/pans would be different, for better or for worst, if All or Nothing actually became a series.
The creator of Interwebs is Jamie Green! They’re and incredibly talented artist with a new graphic novel coming out in their series and it’s really good and creative, I definitely reccomend checking out their current work!

One of my favorite things I witnessed on Tumblr was when the ban on spicy content happened, they rolled out new ads around the same time and the spicy content filter was SO BROKEN it censored an IHOP ad that was a stack of pancakes it confused for something else... like you cannot make this up lol imagine being on the marketing team at IHOP and finding out the ad you're paying for is being censored so people can't see it

That still exists. The "ED Community" still thrives in its lil pocket and encourages each other to stay sick and continue self harming in pursuit of unhealthy weight. Most of they have bios that basically beg people to not report them (as encouraging EDs is against ToS).

Man, no words could ever capture the excitment and fervor on tumblr durring the whole "putin resigns/us election day 3/supernatural series finale". It was truely magical, and i say that as someone who has really only ever been a spectator on the site and hasnt seen supernatural. You had to be there, the energy was unmatched.

As someone who has never touched Tumblr and only really got into internet culture stuff by the late 2010's Interwebs is absolutely fascinating to me. The way all these old forms of social media websites are personified and act as time capsules for how those sites and their userbases were perceived at the time. On an unrelated note the choice by the general community to ship Tumblr and 4chan together is interesting to me as despite all the very obvious differences the two sites userbases had and the relative distaste each site carried for the other (at from what I've seen) they share quite a few similarities. They both want to be a sort of weirdo safe space that pushed back against any perceived outside interference, have hundreds of in jokes about all the stupid crap that's happened on their site over the years, and even began waning in popularity starting in the late 2010's in the face of newer and more popular social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and even TikTok.

Wow, thanks Izzzyzzz, this is quite interesting. I am really not the target demographics for Tumblr and I feel like there is just no jumping in at this point because it all has such a dense and impenetrable sub-culture. I really enjoy how you explain things.

one time i told my friend i liked their shoelaces, and they replied with the "thanks, I stole them from the president" response, and I just got really confused. I didn't use tumblr, they were just cool show laces (they were rainbow :))

I don't think anything can ever match that insane energy of DestielPutinElection day for me. I was already feeling a little loopy that day because I was on new meds and the combined news of Destiel being canon + the anxiety around the election was just... undescribable. Truly the best payoff to being a chronically online ex-Supernatural fan. I was seeing shrimp colours.

Bro the worst part for me was that this was in the middle of the pandemic and I made the absolute worst decision to watch it with my friend from the beginning to the end. We were dealing with our political and death related anxieties by watching Supernatural. I remember laying in bed completely overtaken by the sudden burst of information that I truly felt like I was in super mega hell too

What I find so interesting about your videos is that I saw many of the scandals later on happen before my eyes but not directly, at the time I didn’t have social media and my best friend was chronically on tumblr, so I would see the fandoms and such happen and see her go through that and such while never participating myself

I remember seeing that ball pit for the first time scrolling tumblr in my bed on my old-ass Acer laptop that could barely run the Sims 2 at a solid 20FPS and seeing people attending posting live about how fucked up the whole event turned out.

It's funny which ones of these feel higher or lower on the iceberg for me since I was mostly on witchy and sci-fi Tumblr - for example, sixpence or bone stealing witch feel dang near the surface, but then some of the weirder fandom Tumblr stuff this iceberg has as surface feels damn near abyssal to me

one of my favorite things about the whole john green copypasta is in his response he didnt even say "men"- he said "people with penises". kind of every time i hear about john (or hank as well by that matter) i only become more of an enthusiast. (also, ive legitimately never gotten the hatred he got. it just seems like people were just mad and wanted a guy that in their minds was fit for that role who they could focus on, then proceeded to pull apart every thing hes said or done)
A big part of the people being against him was that people just thought he was cringe. The majority of the people involved in hating him were very young, and it really didn't mean much else beyond that
They hated him because they were losers who wanted their loser friends to think they were more progressive and cooler than they actually were
As someone wise once said: he might be cringe but that is not a moral failing
I was very sad when John left Tumblr, I hope he comes back. And Neil Gaiman never got that reaction which I don’t understand. Not that I want Neil Gaiman to be harassed, I just don’t understand.
@@elif6908 Maybe because Neil Gaiman had his big break before tumblr was even a thing? The fact he already had an established fanbase that hadn't grown up with internet probably helps him a attract more ''level-headed'' people (though he gets the ocasional ill-intentioned ask, most of the time everything seems pretty chill! I love his blog). Meanwhile, John Green solidified his presence on the internet with his vlogs and blog, and attracted a different audience. Or maybe it's luck, who knows?
I joined Tumblr around the Mishapocalypse and it was certainly, uh, an Experience. Also, this is the first of those iceberg videos where I recognise every single thing and I'm both impressed and ashamed of myself
