    Crawl control seems to be an option if you're actually stuck, not to avoid getting stuck.

    Crawl control is for getting un stuck ...driving in sand takes some experience, like going uphill on sand you need speed.Bury your truck to the frame in 2wd then try crawl control

    Why does everyone think Crawl control is for getting unstuck? If it was actually designed for getting unstuck it would be called "UNSTUCK CONTROL". A "benefit" of crawl control is that it "might" get you unstuck in certain situations like being stuck in sand but is not "designed" to do that.
    From the manual - " Crawl control allows travel on extremely rough off road surfaces at a fixed low speed without pressing the accelerator or brake pedal, minimizes losses of traction or vehicle slip when driving in slippery road surfaces, allowing for stable driving.
    So basically, it does your job for you. In my experience, it was very handy for going up or down steep hills with lots of bumps and ruts and the system was constantly making adjustments on power and braking to "try" and keep me at the selected speed.
    The manual DOES NOT say" crawl control is to get me out because I don't know how to drive properly in sand/mud/snow and got myself stuck"

    Crawl Control is useful if STUCK in sand/mud/snow, OR when descending steep trails where you want to focus solely on steering, and allow the truck to control the ABS system to keep speed low and constant. It's noisy, but it works very well. Note that the ABS system can overheat after a while and the system will alarm/self disable.
    I agree the MTS system feels a little gimmicky, but you have to understand what it does and when it does it. But bottom line is the Taco has such amazing capability offroad that most of the time, you'll get by without it just fine. I will use the MTS when climbing steep things, hoping that it may regulate torque/wheel spin a little and prevent slipping. But when I don't use it, I don't slip much at all anyway. If I do slip, I lock the rear diff and boom... climbing again. Also, if you're gonna play in sand, you need to deflate your tires, TacoBro. ;-)

    I understand that you didn't use crawl control exactly for what it was invented for, but seeing it used the way you used it was still educational, and shows that while it's outstanding to have in dire circumstances, it isn't an advantage to getting around offroading. That's what 4x4 & locking diffs are for.
    Edit: almost forgot to mention that this is the reason I hit the like button. Great research you have done here. Keep it up!

    Crawl control high when stuck in sand. 4 low+ MTS Mud/Sand + second gear when going up sand dune is like butter.

    @tab5812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Bury that truck up to the axles in the sand then enable crawl control. That’s what it’s intended for. Seen Toyota demos and it walks right out. Actually it’s pretty effective if used in the worst case scenario.

      yup crawl control saved my ass deep in the hills alone I was able to get unstuck without having to get out of my truck

  • @rodez3106
    @rodez3106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    all my offroading is done at sand dunes and the first major key is to air down your tires (not sure if you did that), in fact everyone here airs down to 8 lbs and that helps tremendously, and you can choose 4hi or 4low depending on the type of dune you are going to climb, but for sure momentum is the second key factor, and the third one is turning off your VSC/Traction Control.

  • @McCoymiked
    @McCoymiked 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I don’t think you tested crawl control properly. It’s meant to get you un-stuck. I’ve been up to the axle in thick mud three times with my taco and crawl control got me out. It’s a weird tool and you shouldn’t have to use it often, but it’s better than getting out and digging.

  • @Shromp-sh7lh

    So what I've learned is crawl control is best for getting unstuck, terrain select and crawl high are for certain situations only, and there's no substitute for just sending it

    Theres a time and a place for the aids and when out in the boonies stuck its just more tools in the arsenal. I personally like MTS especially with the rear locker to get more power to the ground on the front drive train

    Not a Toyota expert but I think the crawl control is meant for getting unstuck and not for climbing hills at a slow speed it would take half a day to do it that way

    I thought the crawl control mode was to be used to help the truck slow its descent when traveling down a bumpy hill

    • @lislebelcher2792
      @lislebelcher2792 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not really good for mud or snow because it's too slow. You need momentum in mud. And when you get stuck you have to be able to spin the tires to get out. Sometimes in snow the only way out is to dig or get towed out.

    Yeah, I think it's only for emergency use. Like when the sand is touching frame, or if you're crawling over slick rocks that could damage the underbelly. I hate the way CC feels and the sound it makes is horrific.

    Crawl isn't for slow driving in sand. It's for foot off accelerator driving in rough terrain and recovering a vehicle. It's also effectively hill descent control.
    This video is a dumb as trying a diff lock for highway driving. It's not what it's for.
