Sonically sealed can be simulated with solvents. Most of these plastic cases are made from styrene. Mek can be used to fuse the case. It will look like a sonically welded box. I think weight might be one of the best ways to check for a fake clamshell. Next use a caliper to measure the case and coin placement area.
How to fix the industry? Use plastic formulas with a trace element in the mix. Would make testing easy. Change the formula every year or more. Make serial numbers cross reference that trace marker. So many things that can be done. Easiest way to talk them into changing is pitch it to them as another service a person can buy in advance of getting a grade. Case marker verification. Have a overnight authentic check service. Makes it easy for the seller to ease someone’s second thoughts.. also let the grading company make some scratch on the side.

I prefer my coins graded in slabs mainly because I know exactly what they are worth and I have a solid starting point in negotiating the sale of the coins. Plus the added advantage of the coins being protected. And I’m not a fan of toned coins whatsoever. Raw coins are fine and I have a lot of them but it’s anybody’s guess what they’re worth without a 3rd party grading service certifying them. NGC is my favorite because I like their holders the best but I have my share of PCGS slabs too.

It's a lot of thinks you need considering before You Buy a coin no matter what if is graded by pcgs por ngc.
Not because the pcgs, ngc holder say that the coin it's in a ms64 You will pay the price. Espacially if You Buy a rare coin.
Ejample : if You Buy a common Morgan cc ms65 low end probably You are pay for a ms64 high end cc.
But the pcgs company give a ms65 beacuse de eey appeal not because it's a ms65.
Thats what we call over grade.
They are more conservative when they grade a rare coin .
Thats why i allways Say ,Buy the coin not the holder. It's a lot of places (like this chanell )
You can learn to spot a well graded coin.

@Blake I mean right, that's why I said "it's getting harder". Gold Shield has been around for a while, and both NGC and PCGS have photos of coins for a bit extra for quite a while. Fakes are usually pretty easy to spot. I've only been paying attention to coins again (for the first time since I was a kid) for about 6 months, and I can pretty easily spot most fakes they show in vids, even for coins/products I've never seen before.

Sometimes the older slabs even get a premium because people say they graded more conservatively back then.
So what might have been given an MS64 grade back in the 1980s might get an MS65 today.
Sometimes that one grade can increase values by ALOT of money.

The biggest value I have seen for purchasing slabs or having raw valuable coins slabbed, beyond what was stated, is family understanding if something were to happen in your life. Example, let’s say Johnny established a solid future based upon his expertise and collecting over many years. He has many coins! If his significant other, family or some type of executor has no clue or knowledge of any value. The investment can potentially be lost due to that lack of knowledge. Whereas, if the majority were slabs, it provides a much simpler version of investigation and valuation which could be the difference in that investment. It is strangely like an insurance that some valuables won’t be misinterpreted or lost in translation to collectibility or potential value. Do it for the family who rolls their eyes every time we make that purchase! They will appreciate it later, hopefully, much much later!

Your forgetting a couple other reasons not to slab. First, slabbed coins are NOT for collectors. They are for people who don't know anything about coins!!! Those who need others to tell them if it's real and to grade it for them. Collectors don't need any of that. They can grade it themselves and that $30 piece of plastic is just in the way! Plus, you can sell your coins for $40 less if they are not slabbed and make the same money!!! If the dealer wants to drop money on a slab, let him ;) To me, if it's not going north of $150 forget the slab. Even then, if I can get $125 unslabbed and he can get $150 slabbed, I am better off :)

Most people who buy coins don't really know the value of an unslabbed coin. They increase the value of higher end coins and it's hard to sell an ungraded coin over 2x gold value or 5x silver value or more than $200 on base metal. But for me, the biggest problem with graded coins is simply the extra cost that has to be added to offset the cost of grading. If you are buying the coin for the coin, then buy the coin. Slabs are used to hoodwink buyers into buying the markup unessicarily. Whereas from a business perspective it makes sense because that is where the market is, you still are forced to upsell the holder and not the coin.

I know this is an older video and maybe your view has change, maybe not. But I find the most typical person who dislikes slabs are dealers. While I am quite comfortable determining coin grades and don’t require a slabbed and graded coin for certainty,, many people are not and rely on propley graded coins in authentic slabs from reputable grading services that typiclly provide an accurate assesment of the coin’s condition.
Now back to my comment about dealers, and please understand I am not saying ALL dealers but many I have personally dealt with over the decades at shows and in shops in my years of travelling to buy and sell coins, I have met an unscrupulous amount of dealers. Dealers who who would rather underpay for an ungraded coin that they insist is a lower condition (when it it not), than rather be presented with a slabbed coin from a PCGS or an NGC for example, and puts a detour to a blockade to their under-assessing coin condition practice.
So for many, I say stack those slabs.

Take a MS70 coin graded by one of the top tier companies and compare it to their MS69 coin and tell me the difference. And if the coin is scarce or rare, the point differential value can be enormous. I've been collecting error coins and you see people selling a common coin and listing it as rare. I know the difference but there are a lot of relatively new collectors who will pounce on the ad. They can't do that if it's slabbed. Good vid, although you are throwing around terms like dimple, etc. that could confuse new collectors.

I like to hold it, weigh it, etc. I can see where some people might like their coins verified, but then it's in a plastic container never to be held again. It's like a little coin zoo. I went on there the other day thinking, "I've REALLY wanted one of those, so if they are still up there in price, I'll pay it."
Back in 2018-19 I thought $100+ was way too steep, and they would come down. No such luck. I JUST checked eBay before posting this, and the last single PF70 sold was on March 23rd 2020, for $155.50 on a bid auction type. Fml
The current listings show a "lot" of 10 slabbed PF69 First Day NGCs for $550. But something seems off with them. They all look as if they are excessively "dished."
And the colors are off, as well. The maple leaves seem as if they are too light all over. The leaf should have distinctive silver veins, with the Lamina of the leaf having a dark "silverish" tone, in contrast. These don't. Pass.

I assembled a set of PR-66 Liberty Nickels 20+ years ago. I have watched them steadily decrease in value over this time, one, because the market hasn't been great for non-gold or non-silver coins AND two, they are finding more high grade coins that increase the population and decrease the value. I do believe there is a fair amount of "churning" where folks are removing coins from slabs and resubmitting them, which increases the population count (but not the actual population.) And, my pretty PR-66 coin is nice but it isn't CAM or several of the other new "premium designations" that are popping up. So, they remain in the bank vault for some future generation.

    • @richardweil8813

That's too bad but these sets can be cyclical and return to popularity; a long view is frustrating though. Classical silver commemoratives (1892-1954) collapsed from their highs in the 1980s but may be coming back. If you set includes the key dates (1885, 1886, 1912-S) those should hold up over time.

But slabbed are the hardest to authenticate due to the fact you can't physically examine the coin. Also with all the super duper computer technology why have they not come up with a computerized coin grading software program? This would eliminate human grading differences.

At least not that I’ve ever heard of anyway. And I hate the fact that if you want the best value for your coin you need it slabbed. Auction places don’t like raw coins either. What if some guy shows up to work at PCGS Monday morning and had a horrible weekend. He’s all upset and possibly hungover and really just doesn’t want to be there. You want him grading your coin? I surely don’t. And because there are human beings that work at the grading companies you know damn well it happens.

You have to know your seller. For instance I deal with many sellers. I want to get to know each one. As one fine seller has said many times, "if you don't trust your seller, say so long." It's that simple and if the price is too good...RUN. It's all common sense, just like it is buying a car or home. Do your due diligence. I am not a grader and there are too many counterfeits, flooding the entire hobby. NGC, PCGS, PSA/DNA as do others honor the value of the item if it gets by and is counterfeit. There human an may have forgotten to weigh the raw coin. Slabing is not 100% accurate but raw coins can be very deceiving. Happy hunting.
