I finally made the switch to Apple Notes after trying every other note taking app under the sun, especially for someone with ADHD. There are so few distractions that the entire screen is your note with only the few formatting options you need to structure notes. I've tried going back to something like Obsidian or Notion, but the sheer amount of customization of every aspect of your note-taking process, it made me realize that I spent more time working on structuring my notes than I did actually focusing on the content of my notes and found it to be incredibly distracting overall. With Apple Notes, you just dive right in and start writing.

I love Apple Notes. I’m not exactly sure when I started using them on a regular basis but I have 300 notes now. I never had a good memory and at 68 years old it’s getting really bad so Notes keeps my life in order. One of my favorite feature is the ability to share Notes. My travels a lot and I worry about him so he created a note and shared it with me. He enters all of his itinerary in the note so I never wonder where he is. Technology is wonderful!

I very much enjoy how clearly and deliberately she speaks. Makes it easier to follow along since we are listening, looking at the screen, and absorbing new material all at the same time. When people race through instructional videos, it's not helpful. Excellent videos and teacher.

@@diegoantoniomz I don’t have a channel on YT but I’m planning to do so. I’m an attorney working in the field of data and IT security and am therefore a very linear mind. I like long numbered lists, so my need for hierarchical structures doesn’t go beyond five levels and that’s what Notes offer. My notes are numbered list items and the sorting capabilities of Notes are great. I worked a lot with Notion but abandoned it again for Notes. Linking comes with the iOs update tomorrow so this will give Notes another boost.

Not being able to change the font, color, size quickly and easily using iPad or iPhone really sucks! When using Notes on an apple laptop (MacBook Air) you are able to click on FORMAT > FONT and you can change font size, color, etc. This needs to be implemented on the iPad. Plus the ability to save a note as a PDF and print it would be great, as of now trying to print a note really sucks

When I was a student I scribbled notes from lectures and organized these typing in my typewriter. I still use the same process during corporate meetings. I scribble using Apple pencil on my iPad Mini on an app that allows scribbling. Then, I use a word processor to assemble the scribbled notes to my liking with emphasis on structured organization.

Brooke, I'd like to see a video from you about how you use tags.
Because the search function of Apple Notes is so fast and effective, I don't use tags very much. But, when I do, I have narrowly defined how I use tags. I think of tags as “meta” data. That is, they are information “about” a Note and not part of the “content” of the Note itself. Here are examples:
    * Type of Note (Article, instructions, invoice, map, receipt, etc.)
    * Status (Planned, Active, Completed, etc.)
    * Format of Note (PDF, Excel, JPEG, etc.)
    * Locations (San Diego, Home, Farm, Ohio, etc.)
    * Sources (Email, boss, teacher, Internet, etc.)
    * Retentions (DeleteAfter2023Q2, DeleteAfter2023Q3, DeleteAfter2023312023, etc.)

Brooke, I'd like to see a video from you about your folder design & structure. Over the years, I've come across only 4 approaches. (They are listed below.)
I believe that most people, particularly beginners, seem to fall into the structure of their folders by evolution, rather than by design. That may be effective for the first 200 notes, but when the notes get up over a 1,000, I found that a pre-established design is helping in finding notes.
    Types of Folder Designs/Structures
    * Topics (Art, Equipment / Parts, Family, Food, Investing, Medical, Politics, etc.)
    * Life Roles (Son, spouse, father, businessman, teacher, chef. Etc.)
    * Tiago Forte’s PARA Method (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archive)
    * Days of the Week (Monday, Tuesday, etc.)

But for my use case, I use a leather cover with a field notes, 1 moleskine cahier and some index cards. I needed smaller notebooks because I lost track of my tasks in the thicker exceeds. I read yesterday that you can start a note in the notes app and if you want more editability, you can edit the note in Pages (Apple's word editing app)... ? I haven't tried it but I'd love to test that out too. I'm not suggesting you stop using emojis...but maybe other title edits would be fun. I still have to test it myself.

The right tool for the right job... and your way is your way but Apple Notes seems great if you use stickies for everything. But if using paper, a notebook format would be better with sections and even subsections. But you do you. Cheers! I've also gone through 4-5 note taking apps and for personal use Goodnote is my choice. For work, OneNote is the tool. A shout out to the Remarkable 2 note taking tablet can be an option for some.

People here need to realize that almost all Apple Apps are intended to be the most basic starter apps. They will never have all the features you want, that is what 3rd party apps are for. Apple apps are basic, easy to use for pretty much everyone and are free with your device. “Pro” users should look to 3rd party but expect to pay for those extra features. But for 98% of the population the Apple apps are more than good enough.

Hi Brooke, I use bolding, italics, colour fonts all the time. Catch is you cannot do it on iPhone. You can add these formatting via MAC. As your notes sync between devices. Your iPhone app will now have notes formatted.

Thanks for making this app approachable! It looks very practical.. Is there any updates to Apple Notes that provides the user with a monthly calendar and task list..? Free of course.. 😉

I still think Good Note 6 folder concept is still better. It makes it look like books and easy to find, folderise and it also syncs to icloud. I only use Notes for quick notes and thing i need to do quickly and forget. But real work for clients and actions; i use good note 6.

Collanote has much better spacing between written and typed content. Collanote also has much better and least process intrusive way to switch different pencil modes.

When I try to write in notes with my Apple Pencil, it only moves the page around. It won’t write. How do I solve that?

it's the sync voice recording to notes that is insanely important for note taking (while interviewing or recording a lecture)....if they'd bring that to this program, I'd be right there with you.

There’s a quicker way to get perfect shapes in Notes. Make your shape but don’t lift the Apple Pencil or your finger and it will snap to the perfect shape. That’s faster than lifting then doing a press and hold followed by selecting from the menu.

TQ That's the most important thing, because he's still 19 years old, he doesn't deserve to have that burden imposed on him just because of the electronics and electronics he holds, it doesn't complete Google's example... because he's still in school.

I have iPad and iMac but android mobile platforms. I do think it’s a nice app especially with tagging and smart folders. But if you need to operate across eco systems it’s problematic since there is not a cross platform option. On my mobile, I have to open a proxy app, complete a sign-in process to my Apple environment, then wait for the notes to load-up. It doesn’t take long providing you’ve a good connection or on WiFi…so, it is mostly ok. But often I find myself needing to quickly refer to my Notes app whilst on my phone or in a queue for instance… then it is a complete pain.

Making things complicated is very easy….but making things simple takes a lot of thought and work.
