Regular transmission fluid changes over and above factory recommended intervals are very important on these units, this will keep all sliding parts clean, they have a filter;but it’s installed in away you must remove quite a few components to get at it , so consequently it’s not a in vehicle part change and you MUST use the correct type of fluid .

I'm dealing with this issue now. Waiting on my replacement CD4E for my 2000 mazda 626. Yes I did drive it although it was acting up, then finally giving out. Now know it was most likely the pressure valve being the culprit.

Hard shifts are a sure sign of "runaway" EPC, if you had no forward engagement and/or noise, it most likely broke the 2 sided drum like the one in this video

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I have a Ford E150 transmission that has failed and Ii am considering dropping it and doing the repairs myself. Never didan auto Ronny, but, I am always up for a challenge.

That's the reason why I prefer MTX-75 manual trans. 🙌
Good video, good explanation by the way.

The CD4E is not a Ford transmission,It is a Mazda transmission. Most transmission repair shops refuse to rebuild this transmission. This transmission was put in the Escape also

I am no idiot.Have replaced one in an all wheel drive Escape with a Jasper reman which comes with a new cooler that is mandatory to replace part of the warranty.

well also the trans used on Tauras and windstars freestars is junk too a lot of problems with second gear slipping, this trans is called AXOD

  • @robdamechanic
    @robdamechanic  13 ปีที่แล้ว

@pupdogluv sounds like the filter is clogged, most likely torque converter is coming apart causing this, time for a rebuild!

I have a problem with a 1995 Ford Contour. The transmission went out at 77000 miles. I put a used one in with 39000 miles, along with valve body kit and Transmission cooler. The fluid only seems to last about a year, and then it starts a delayed shift form 2nd to third , or will be searching for 3rd. I changed the fluid with Mercon V and Lubegard red And it came out of it. Initially it had a pretty hard shift from 2nd to 3rd , but now the shifting doesn't seem to be as hard. The Transmission is quiet and no noise. You mention the pressure regulator. Is that something I should look into or do you think changing the fluid like I have been doing will take care of it? I've never had a transmission be so hard on the fluid. Comments appreciated. Thanks .

Hey, all. I've started a page devoted to this nasty transmission on Facebook. Do a search 'ford/mercury cd4e transmission.' It's a place where we can meet up and discuss our collective misery caused by this thing and how some of us solved the issues.

I have no idea if this happened to my transmission, but i got mine replaced with a hefty bill of $2500. it was giving hard shifts, and the garage said that the oil pan rusted through and pissed all the oil out. -.-

i think the people or man who invented the automatic transmision was a genuis! and also the people that thought of how to cast and make the parts were all epic also! so in the used replacement tranny did you replace the epc? to prevent this from happening?

Verdict is in, the pump housing rusted away and blew. $2000 repair estimate. Never heard of a transmission rusting out! What crap.

Continued: By the way, my car is a 97 Mercury Mystique. It's a great car. The engine is a dual-overhead Zetech inline 4, which is a great engine. It's all electric inside and rides well. Unfortunately, it does have the CD4E tranny, the transmission of death. I sure wish it were a 5-speed manual.

Some tauruses (taurii?) came with an AX4N. Basically those equipped with the 3L Duratecs. And the SHO models from 96-99. Basically the only thing you can do is maintain your tranny fluid. I have 107k on mine and no major issues although I pushed my first fluid swap to 67k.....

Doesn't seem to be the same issue that occurred in my 1999 Merc Cougar. Basically, it lost 2nd and 4th gear.

My transmission just one day started shifting hard then just went out. Got it home and the next day started it up let it warm up then ran it through the gears they all caught but had to rev it up for it to start moving. What would I have to rebuild in it?

I'd like to switch to synthetic, but do I need to totally have it flushed, or can I just drop 4qts and put 4 in, and have a mixture? I am not sure what is in there now, but I know it is not synthetic, Aamco did it last with the rebuild. Also, any recommendations on the synthetic?
    thanks

Mr. Rob. I'm looking at a Ford Contour for $400. Its a nice car, but the pump in the trans has failed. How big of a deal is this for a relatively novice mechanic? I've done transmissions/transaxles in Mazda/Ford truck/SUVs, Ford Tempo, and some Ford Taurus experience as well. I am just not wanting to bite off more than I can chew.
I'd appreciate any answer you can give as soon as possible, the man wants to sell the car ASAP and I'm sure it'll go quickly if it's a fixable issue. Posting on 5-20-2014
    Thanks!
    John

John R transmissions on that car are pretty expensive to repair for a car that is only worth about $1000 it isn't worth it.

Speed of clutch engaging shouldn't affect gears. Plus constant mess mean anything?

I know this video has been up for well over a year, but let me post my testimony of late, as I now am unlucky enough to have a car with this transmission, one of the absolute worst automatics ever put in a car, in my opinion. When I got my car, a nice car I was able to get cheap, it wouldn't shift correctly. It would shift up and down on the highway from 4th down as lows as second, with sometimes shifting into neutral and 'giving up' until I pulled it over to the park, and started again. Cont'd
