    Her father is a brave and good man. He is a dreamer. He risked it all to give his family a life of freedom, even though he went through the brainwashing himself. He saw through it. And now his daughter’s life (and all his future generations) are forever changed for the better. I’m so happy for them. Good job, Dad!

    I was wondering how she got to watch all kinds of tv show while in North Korea and then she said her father was a smuggling. hihi Good for her and her family to have been out. His father was a smart man for saving up and having a connection with smuggling so they had a connection outside to help them escape. I can't imagine being in a place where you're basically told what you can and cannot do. So happy that she and her family have well adjusted.

      North Korea is currently awful but I think we shouldn't forget we all still live in a (capitalist) world where freedom is a joke. I work 6 days a week for less than 600€ per month (I live in Europe so no, that's not a lot of money for us), I don't have a house, I currently live at my grandparents' place. (I am 25, have a university degree, masters, job experience, speak a few languages...) and still I can't even dream of freedom and independence, since housing where I live costs more than my current salary and food is getting more and more expensive every day, and the government forbids limiting or controlling the food companies' benefits, meaning every company is free to raise the price of basic products as much as they want as long as people will buy it (which we will because we need to...eat...and that kind of stuff). Don't forget reality is not "communism=bad because Stalin and Kim Jong-un, capitalism=good because freedom".

    • @ilovesushi7311

      @@putosguirisThat's so true. To be fair, I believe that it doesn't matter where you go (be either north korea or any capitalist country), if there's a bad leadership, then you have a bad life. Although, any communist country is doomed to a degree of struggle because there will always be a certain country that will make sure to butt in and not let their capitalist empire is threatened. (I'm talking about you, US)

    • @ilovesushi7311

      @@ilovesushi7311 i'm not a native english speaker so my english my be bad but here goes. I see your point though i think there's other reasons. The US is willing to support communist regimes i.e China, Vietnam, Laos. All trading parners of the US. China and the states do speakagainst eachother. But despite there political and millitary hostilitys they trade a lot. So does Vietnam and Laos. The US is less about ideology (even if they talk about it a lot) and more about intrestes. They US will overthrow a democratic and or capitalist regime (they have before). And replace it with a communist one if it's in their intrests. And they will suppourt communist regimes if it's in there intrests. foreign politics is about your nations interests.

    It's really cool to listen to different people from North Korean and how they escaped. I also basically went with my parents' plan, I wasn't old enough to have a say anyway, and I didn't experience much hardship when leaving the USSR. It was only later that I found out how much more difficult it was for other people, including many members of my family. It's so amazing to hear real people tell their real stories and how different they can be.

      I'm from Russia...
      Sometimes I am afraid that our country will become like this, although we live a life that is completely different from the USSR and I am glad that I was born at this time, but I would never want what is happening now to happen...

    • @misterflamingo

      @MiYuma404 Russia does indeed appear to be headed towards a more brutal form of dictatorship. The problem when you start a conflict and people begin to lose family members, friends, lovers, when these people start coming back terribly scarred from the conflict, you generate intense hostility. And that makes you paranoid for your life, which, in turn, causes you to become more brutal to root out plots (real or imagined) against you. The thing is, you never know who might one day be believed to be a threat because it is entirely subjective. Even supporters can be targeted. I don't think Putin has a long enough lifespan to reach the levels of Pol Pot, but he definitely will cause a lot more damage before he is replaced - regardless of the cause. This is why Russia has seen an increase in repression and brutality from the regime.

    I grew up in vietnam and I also have to wear red ties when going to school, we had school guards, either teachers or other students that checked if the students wore red ties or not. If not, I could get "conduct" deducting points and do trivial jobs like sweeping etc. Almost all public schools in Vietnam had to hang the Ho Chi Minh picture in the class, so I sympathize with Hyun Kyung a lot. But I think she made a mistake in this video, Vietnam has no land borders with Thailand, so it maybe Laos instead.

    • @logicalpiano

      nope. Laos doesn't allow north korean defectors coming in. Thailand allows. They make a fake passport and smuggle into Thailand from China and they go straight to the korean embassy in Thailand. Since Thailand isn't a socialist country they are allowed to enter and apply for refugee. Then, the South Korean embassy accepts all north korean defectors to enter South Korea. Yes Vietnam has no border with Thailand, but since Vietnam is also a socialist country, they definately ban north korean defectors.

    • @realandre199

      They probably would’ve passed through either Cambodia or Laos. She might’ve just skipped it for brevity but most of the stories say Thailand is the last stop where you need to be legally “arrested” and then the government will deport you to South Korea.

    If anyone else is confused by her saying they crossed from North Korea to China, they did in fact go to China. I was confused cuz I didn’t think China was anywhere near S/N Korea, but if you google it both South and North Korean are actually only separated by China by what seems to be a river. So they might have crossed said river to get to the border. So we may need to brush up on our geography because I thought China and Korea were separated by a much larger body of water.

    Foreigners may not know well, but the South Korean and North Korean governments are incompatible, but there is no reason for Koreans and North Koreans to hate each other and fight. Can they be close? That's a stupid question. South Korea and North Korea were one country and one people. It is not a question of whether we can get close, but a correct greeting is to stay healthy and well until we are unified.
