    Yes it's true. I bought a T7 2TB, installed my old system on it and the old 2013 iMac is now a screamer. 2013 iMac boots in 30 seconds. Photoshop opens in 5 seconds. This is the best Mac upgrade in years. And it's not from Apple.

    last week I bought this Samsung T5 1TB SSD for €99,- on the Black Friday sale.
    3 years earlier I already had bought the blue T5 500GB.
    Those have almost 8000 hours on the counter. And work perfect 100% error free Smart test.
    Incredibly reliable.

    Thank you Tom. Another top review! I just purchased a 500GB T7 (before seeing your review) and it's working great on my vintage Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro, using the USB 3.0 Type A cable. The Read and Write speeds appear to be about half what you are seeing though - time to upgrade my Mac, but I'm waiting on further announcements re Apple Silicon before making a decision. I think the battery is beginning to swell, as the lid on the laptop isn't closing fully - a sure sign of battery problems from what I've read online. However, the battery condition is still showing as Normal and 100% charged.
    I also have a number of other Samsung SSDs - 2 x T1, a T3 and 2 blue T5s. These are all used exclusively for video editing in Final Cut Pro X and work flawlessly with the MacBook Pro. I should really move the completed video projects and media to cheaper external drives to free up space, but never seem to get around to it. Thanks again for the great review and the interesting blog.

    • @TomScryleus
      @TomScryleus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you John. Yeah your vintage macbook probably doesnt have support for usb 3.2 gen2.
      My final cut pro x projects are not getting that big anymore, i dont optimize the video files! instead I only create proxy files in my project, works a lot quicker for my work flow. When im done editing I just use the original files. In comparison, this video project was only 30gb, in the past it would have been 300-400gb.

    • @cogmovies
      @cogmovies 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomScryleus Yes, know the feeling about file sizes when using optimized media (ProRes 422) and having background rendering on as I edit. I'm currently working on editing, plus producing a highlights version, of my niece's wedding which I shot on VHS-C tape 25 years ago. I converted the original media to mp4 using Handbrake - the quality is surprisingly good. I optimized that on import to FCP X to help with editing and have added some effects (mainly colour grading).
      The library size is now well over 400 GB for an 80 minute production, plus 20 minutes highlights - principally due to the size of the render files. I may use proxy media for any future 4k projects, but this one is just standard definition (4:3) that I've brought into a 1080p timeline (showing black bars each side). Thanks for your reply Tom.

    Thanks for sharing your stories, Tom! I myself after a careful searching for the appropriate SSD, had decided to choose the T7 touch. It all because of the purpose to use it in travelling outside of my desk (while I've got WD 2TB at desk) since it is the most light, compactible and minimalistic, which becomes the perfect pair with my Ipad Pro 11 inch. The only function that I have over spend for is the Touch, since it couldnt use with my Ipad Pro, but still chose as the beautiful LED signal to let you know while it is connecting or loading. 😉 And have to say that I am totally happy with my choice till now. 👍

    Question: I own a 2019 MacBook Pro (13”), and I’ve realized the 128gb internal capacity is not enough for my workflow as a musician/producer. Can this product handle the my type of workflow PLUS utilizing it as the sole bootable disk drive all at the same time?

    Tom, how about T5 vs T7 Head-to-Head? I would like to buy one, but T5 1 TB is a bit tempting... or a comparison to SanDisk Extreme?

    • @TomScryleus
      @TomScryleus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think those tests are probably overrated for normal case scenarios. I look at these for regular use. save photos, videos etc.
      if you plan to store things on them, just go with T5. if you plan to edit videos on them, I still think you can use the T5. I seriously doubt I would notice a difference in performance if someone swapped out my T7 to a T5.
      yes the t7 is twice the speed of T5, BUT.. the the T5 is already very fast.

I have a 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 16 GB memory. During the pandemic I have been taking a lot of Zoom etc classes which have been sent to me afterward to keep. I would like to have them backed up on an external HD that allows me to play them directly from the external HD......I don't need to edit them, just store them somewhere other than my MacBook HD or pay Apple's outrageous rates for Icloud storage. Is the Samsung T5 or T7 what I need? If not, can you help me figure what I do need? Thanks for the help.

    • @peckyneckyfilms
      @peckyneckyfilms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there - If it’s just for backing up video files, I would suggest that the T5 would be absolutely fine. Your other option would be the San Disk Extreme Portable SSD - there is an older and newer version. The older version has data transfer speeds of 550mb/s. The newer one transfers at 1050mb/s. I have an older version which I use for storing video files on and it works great for what I need. They are a similar price to the Samsungs and Amazon has regular lightning deals on them.

    Thinking about buying this for my time machine backups. I've been using a 2TB Time Capsule for many years but the damn thing is just too slow. It told me 1400 hours remaining when trying to restore my MBP from it. I was considering building a NAS but iI don't think I can justify the money for one right now. I'd want to buy WD Red SSDs and NVME drives for caching. That would probably be approaching $1000. Maybe in a couple years from now I'll do that and toss one in a rack. The only thing is I am also a minimalist which is why I wanted to do a NAS, one less cable connected to my Mac.

    Hi - Great video thanks. Question please. You are using FCPX on the Mac with a hard drive right and having your library on the Samsung T7 SSD - Is it not possible to have both FCPX and the library on the T7 SSD so everything would work quicker say in 4k? I hear about people with older Macs who boot up via an external SSD for improved start up speed. Would it be an advantage for FCPX? - Hopefully not a dumb question.....

    • @TomScryleus

      In theory I think it sounds right. Should boot Fcpx faster (if your internal storage is slower)
      However once you are IN final cut pro, everything loads to RAM memory. So your solution could make imports, loading etc faster. But I dont think it would affect fluidity.

      no it works fine on my macbooks. (with both big sur and catalina). whatever the problem is, has nothing to do with the macOS or the macbook brand.
      something is either wrong with your SSD, or your macbook. if you want it to work properly on your macbook, format the the T7 to regular macOS file system, not exfat or other.

    IT IS NOT PERFECT FOR MAC! QUITE OPPOSITE! If you need painfully low transfers while copying large files or after over half of drives capacity is filled, And I am talking about really low, like below 100/50 MB/s, which is a fraction of what Samsung promises in ads, the T7 is an option. I have checked it and returned this painfully slow drive. As additional bonus Samsung T7 guarantees PROBLEMS WITH TRIM on the Mac. DO NOT BUY IT!

      you are 100% right of course. But I still think the world is wrong on this. :)
      I think I will make a video and share my extended thoughts.
      I just think that because the first hard drive was mechanical everyone assumes hard drives are mechanical. I think they should be both called hard drives, one is mechanical the other is solid state/flash. They came up with this when they used to make partitons. and so you had hard drives and "soft(ware)" drives. a hard drive was just what we called were you stored data. It could also be a floppy drive. the definition of hard drive should be physical drive. just because the first hard drive happened to be mechanical, it doesn't seem logical (to me).
      Ok, a better example, to me, its like saying a Tesla is not a car. Because it doesn't use gasoline like the previous generation of cars.
      ps. I don't understand your USB comparison. I usually say which USB I mean, because there are so many variants. USB1,2,C etc. please elaborate what you mean. I'm curious.
