I first heard this as a student aged 18, now I'm 77 and still in love with the music of Bach. This is one of his most captivating tunes! Others come and go, Bach will live forever!

It's a shame that the microphone distribution is not correct. The flutes eat up all the sound and you barely appreciate the enormous work of the harpsichord, which is practically the main instrument.

Thank you. I wanted to know whether the recorder parts of Brandenburg Concerto No 4, had been replaced by flutes. According to this version they still played by recorders.

And its much easier as they play in the home key of F major.

      It's this concerto's 2nd movement in d minor (BWV 1057, II)

The music hand written by Bach himself marks it as "Andante" in 3/4 time.

The harpsichord is reduced to a basso continuo here, a background instrument. All I hear are woodwinds

In BWV 1057, the principal violin part from the supposed "lost" Brandenburg Concerto #4 BWV 1049 is the left hand part of the harpsichord. Bach found his supposedly lost concerto and transposed it down a whole step so that the highest notes of the principal violin part can be played on the harpsichord. He also adapted the principal violin part to the harpsichord idiom. FYI, BWV 1049 is scored for principal violin, two recorders, 1st ripieno violin, 2nd ripieno violin, ripieno viola, cello, violone and continuo.

Played at Baroque era pitch of A415. F in Bach's day was therefore sounding as an E per our modern pitch standard of A440.
      You have very good ears!🙋🏼‍♂️🎶

    • @herrickinman9303

Get with the program. The piece is played in F@A415. The wind instruments in Bach's time were designed to be played at a415 ("Chamber pitch") or a392 ("Deep chamber pitch" aka "French pitch"). A440, the so-called "concert pitch," didn't become a standard until 1950s, and then only after decades of lobbying by American wind instrument builders.

@@rosslewchuk9286 There were several pitch standards in the Baroque. Choir Pitch aka Organ Pitch (A462), Chamber Pitch (A415). Deep Chamber Pitch aka French Chamber Pitch (A392). In royal and noble courts in Germany in Bach's time, the preferred pitch was A392. Most organs were tuned to A462, though some were tuned to A415. Since this concerto was composed for the Leipzig Collegium concerts at Zimmerman's, the pitch was likely A415.
