Bach - Harpsichord concerto in A major BWV 1055 - Corti | Netherlands Bach Society

  • The basis for this Harpsichord Concerto in A major, BWV 1055, was probably a concerto for oboe d’amore, as suggested by the key and the fact that it is only really the right hand of the harpsichord that plays concertante. Apart from Bach himself, listeners at the time it was written would probably not have known that the solo instrument was originally an oboe. And if you had not read this, you might not have suspected it either.

    The Dutch are the very best Bach interpreters i have ever come across, they seem to always play bach so natually, i heard the first performance of Bachs christmas oratorio in the westerkirch in Amsterdam and left me absolutely spellbound, they really are the champions of bach performance, yet bach never visited Amsterdam, he never left his native Germany!

      Corti, the harpsichordist in this NBS performance, is Italian. Sato, the NBS concertmaster/solo violinist, is Japanese. The conductor/harpsichordist in the NBS performances of the concertos for 3 harpsichords is Danish. Many of the singers in the NBS performances of Bach's cantatas are not Dutch.

I don't think I could even register the highs and lows as fast as yall can probably scan the whole sheet. Had toy pianos in the cradle maybe and never stopped playing? Well, I admire the skills.

    The first and third movement are a bit much and I got really fatigued by them. I never understood the need to fill up every space with sound. The larghetto was a welcoming relief. Still, wonderful execution!

    • @valobarroco
      @valobarroco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's right: one harpsichord in the continuo part and the other as cembalo concertante.

    Is the Netherlands Bach society for J.S. Bach alone or does it commemorate other members of the Bach family such as C.P.E.

    • @bach
      @bach  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Netherlands Bach Society also performs other repertoire from the seventeenth or eighteenth century, as well as music which has a link with Johann Sebastian Bach in any way. For our project All of Bach we record all works by Johann Sebastian Bach and publish them on th-cam.com/users/bach

      @@bach that is such an audacious and worthwhile goal. I hope this succeedes and eventually branches out to other forms of social media somehow, bringing more attention to Bach's work from younger audiences...

    Why 2 harpsichords? This was written for 1.

    • @bach
      @bach  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      BWV 1055 is written for one solo harpsichord. The other harpsichord is part of Basso Continuo-section (together with the cello and violone) and has an accompanying role. In this video, Francesco Corti is the soloist and Siebe Henstra is the accompanist.
