I made this video to try show what I do in order to be successful with anti-aircraft vehicles in War Thunder (SPAA). I will go over several topics that should help you become both more effective and able to survive longer in matches.

I’d actually look to upgrade so I can get the qualification, dump 1 point into everything and get targeting up to lvl 3. then focus the commander, and loader.
@@constantinstruckmeyer7769 That is also a good way to do if your crew is high enough lvl. I am also a fan of upgrading the Commander early in general.
@@8BitDane yeah this helped a lot. Also, I like to bait planes into a confrontation with me and because they will fly straight most of the time i can you just insta kill them
i start play spaa whit the armored car low tier whit two 50 cal . now i can most of the time hit and destroye stuff in the air , my crew suck so i dont have the best lead . the gun dont follow the target fast enough to hit accuratly because of the skill . but whit time my gunner will be better and i will be even more deadly . but when im lucky and plane are in a distance where i can shot them accuratly i can do more than 5 plane kill in a game
How do I correctly lead targets? I end up spewing hundreds our rounds that seem to ALWAYS be too far or too short even when they are moving very slow, it's only when they dive towards me that I can effectively hit enemy aircraft.
Hi Igzilee, it really depends from SPAA to SPAA, even though the stat sheets states very similar muzzle velocities and you thereby would think that the point of aim is the same, it is definitely not. The Wirbelwind requires much more lead that you would think and if you step up to the Ostwind you have to lead much less to hit the plane. The distance to the plane also plays a huge role, why I always suggest to wait with firing at planes until they are much closer. I would suggest that you go into a test drive with your SPAA. Set the game mode to Arcade, thereby getting the lead indicator when you aim at the planes and spend some time learning the different Lead you need to apply for various SPAA's. Good Hunting !
@@8BitDane though you gotta be careful with AB due to high repair costs on some SPAA's (Ostwind, Ostwind 2, Kugelblitz for instance around 25-30k)
for sure, especially if you do not run a premium account, at rank 3 and above it starts to get painful to lose vehicles in matches.

word of advise for new players using AA:
1-never fire on enemy planes when they are far away using AP or HE rounds,the chance u hitting them when they travel 600 km/h is 0 and not 0/1 more.
2-never fire on enemy planes if they are more than one sniping your camp...they can perfectly see everything in the sky,by the time u firing on another plane,they getting ready to dive at you knowing you are top open and have no armor to stop them.
3-enemy planes cant make hard turn at low br since they crew are low level and cant sustain that much G-force so they go up and push the nose down little by little to turn...this way they dont get much G-force but it will drain their speed which give you a really high chance to kill them even with AP rounds.
4-if your ammo belt is more than 50-70 round...always trick them fire 30-40 rounds and stop,they think you are reloading and instead of dodging they come directly at you which is the most stupid thing a pilot can you now thats your window to shoot them down since you still have some ammo left and they dont know,try to shoot up and down so it would be so much harder for them to dodge your fire.
5- always fire on the move,some AA have good speed and when you fire on the move,you can avoid being killed by bombs and some of their MG cannon are going to miss,its so much easier for them to shoot at a stationary than a moving target.
6-never fire in front of the planes or behind them or on them,all of this going to miss and they will eventually kill you,you have to guess where they will go next and fire there or create a path so they cant dodge it.
i mostly play AA in any br and i been playing for 5 years,this is what i learn so far so i hope it come in handy for you.

@@squidy4082 HE (high explosive will literally shred the plane to pieces and maybe even kill the pilot with 2-3 rounds AT MAX, this is something AP rounds could never do with a single burst of fire especially with such low number of rounds fired.
-Whenever you unlock a new SPAA, always go for these: elevation mechanism, horizontal drive, crew replacement and HE rounds then go for other upgrades like tracks, engine, filters and stuff

Been taking some of this advice into account, I just started with the M13, it isn't a bad little anti-air. Enough to get seven kills in one match. I definitely appreciate sinking points into targetting. I noticed everything is snappier and way more accurate.
best video on SPAA use i have seen. definitely having an effect on my playstyle. was one of those guys who desperately would fire at the black spec in the sky. time to learn better haha.

My current SPAA doesn’t have a 40mm gun but has 3 machine guns that have a very fast fire rate and I’m not sure if I should use that or go back to my old 40mm. And this is a definite sub
hi Sailor, I think it depends....the smaller caliber SPAA's in the lower ranks tend to have faster turret rotation than the larger caliber ones and are better at closer ranges both with the faster turret, fire rate and easier to hit with due to the sheer volume of fire you put out. The larger caliber ones tend to have a lower rate of fire and slower turret traverse, but a single hit is enough to bring down a plane and they have much better armor pen if you use them in the tank destroyer role. It really comes down to your personal preference and your playing style - and thanks for your sub !
I think I’m going to stick with my current SPAA until I get enough for the one I’m saving for but I personally do like the larger ones more because I’m tired of being out of range. And yes I’m broke in silver lions.

I agree, my br is 5.1 and my SPAA is 4.0 and yes it’s harder and very annoying.
@@slysleuthsailor7714 You will suffer with the French tech tree. Even if the AMX 13 DCA 40 is a very good vehicle, having it from 4.7 to 8.0 is very painful in the last steps...

I like to park in a shadow close enough to the action for my arty to be useful, near solid wall between me and the enemy, and from where I can scoot into cover, preferably downhill. With a vehicle with a low ammo count, I also try to sit on or near a friendly CAP.

Speaking strictly from experience:
1. Be patient. Don’t expose yourself until you have to
2. Get to know the vehicle you play, the firing rate, shell type velocity, capacity, turret rotation speed
3. if you strike you better kill, if you failed you must relocate, fast
4. Low to mid rank SPAAs are most effective when the targets are within 1.5km of distance, no more than that
5. Always save more buffer space between your targets and where you aim, you will need it
Lastly, learn your enemies, deal with them accordingly
I love to just shoot at planes wich are distractes them watch them look where im at, dive in on me and then pretty much snipe their pilot. I doesn’t work often bit when it does its really fun. I guess most people don’t seem to like this but im playing this game purely for fun I honestly don’t care if o get lit up and just enjoy trying to learn the different aa’s, for example i just started with france, played for a bit and unlocked the truck with the big single gun (don’t know what it’s called) und just absolutely sniped someone who dove in on me. Absolutely missed every other shot i took on any other plane but still had much fun. I just cant get hits in on planes that move any other direction then directly to me. Still i love this game and the fun it gives me
So.. my problem isn't not getting my cross on the enemy planes.. but while my cross is perfectly in that little circle most of the time i don't seen to hit any aircraft that doesn't come straight for me..
hi Neko, its the leading and predicting where the plane is going that is the problem, the only way to figure it out is really to just keep doing it, getting better over time. As a complete noob to war thunder can I spawn in a AA vehicle as your first vehicle at the start of the game or do you have to use a battle tank sorry if my question sounds completely stupid but I honestly have no clue but would like to learn thanks
Hi Pepper, you can easily spawn in the SPAA as first vehicle if you want, it is the cheapest vehicle to spawn in as well. Usually people just wait with it, since there are no planes up for the first few minutes of a match. I have made some tips videos you might want to check them out, probably something in there you can use :)

Sometimes if a plane is being too timid and keeping its distance I'll unload a shit load knowing I'll miss then just stop and wait knowing Ive painted a target on myself, they'll assume I'm out of ammo and go into a pretty exposed dive thinking it'll be an easy kill. It doesn't work all the time, but it works often enough.

The Sdkz 221 is prob the vehicle i feel most secure with leading shoots. I can't for the life of me read the tracers of the automatic guns what so ever.
the 37 and 40 mm guns are more difficult to figure out for sure, also because the single barreled versions are slow firing, so you need to be pretty accurate and that takes a lot of practice.

as if not firing anything makes you undetecable by them, they alawys spot you first when im not even firing anything

@@8BitDane Thanks, I have watched both. My problem is alot of times that I don't know if I lead the aim too much or too less. So I end up deliberately leading too much and hoping the plane will fly into it - which is just as stupid as it sounds. And watching you just popping the plane with 2 to 3 shots is like watching magic happen.

if I were an SPAA I would go with my team to a capture point because that's just plane's paradise. every plane goes to the capture point as soon as someone tries to capture it.
Nice video, however I gave up. I ended up hunted 4 light tanks with my zis-12 last game. 0 planes, however.
It does take time to learn for sure, in the end experience is the best teacher.

You're also right about the experience stuff, at some point you get used to the range/leading stuff. You just know when is the perfect time to shoot. There are still a lot of factors though like angular velocity and the pilot's variable throttling.

I must be the only R3 player that uses it as and AA vehicle, that and a mobile repair vehicle for my squadmates. I do rush cap then fall back right away though to help the friendly team with some tickets. I only become a degenerat when the game is coming to an end.

I only play the mobile version and any spaa is practically useless. The air battles don’t last long enough and aircraft are so rarely used effectively that you’re practically just an easy kill for any other players.
I tried the mobile game for a couple days, but its not for me.

I want to know why my ZSU 37 is such a crappy AA? My wirbelwind has a better chance of taking down a plane then the ZSU . The fire rate is soo slow and only has 2 barrels compared to 4. Just think about it. A 3.7br AA is better than a 8.0 AA. I would rater just use it to take out tanks

I play arcade because I can't see the person that kills me. What I have done playing spaa is buy backups. In chat I tell them all, this is my airspace, if you are an enemy, you will be shot down. 😂😂 They come to me and that's easy kills. 😂😂
That is pretty funny. I mostly have a 2nd SPAAG in my line ups with the countries I play the most as well. It does take up a crew slot, but buying them is worth it to me.

How can you play air defense?
Follow your team mates at some distance, but don't over extend unless you have an SPAAG able to double as a tank destroyer. Find cover and be air defense for your team mates, i'd say maybe a couple hundreds meters behind them. Also, remember that your tracers will attract enemy tanks as well, so don't lead them to your team mates :)

You are not able to, only aircraft are allowed.

@@Heafsickle you can also use them as tank destroyers with the HVAP belt, especially in the lower ranks
How do you become an aa turret?
If you mean aiming without using the gun optic, its the same button you use when zooming in a gun optic (square for PlayStation, and shift i think for PC)

They are more difficult to aim with since most of them have much lower rate of fire, sadly
Lead wise though, they are much the same as lower caliber shells since most of them are just as fast
Might sound absurd but I've managed to shoot down shot tons of planes with panzer II. It's flexible 10 rounds main gun/mg.
oh for sure, the 20 mm gun is great. If you have the Puma with the 20mm cannon, that too can double as pure SPAAG, the turret rotation is slow, but the shell is super fast so not much lead is needed.

load the shell, then range the target and you can see the fuse being set in the reticle.
