Great list! And yeah I agree with Tales of Arise and to the point, I have my brain wired to the game’s (my preferred one, as it does have good remap options) combat and controls. That, if I come to back to it after 1 or 2 years has passed since I played it. I’ll still remember all the details, mechanics and cool combos I can still do
Glad to see you championing Romancing SaGa 2 remake. It does my heart proud. We really missed out on not getting it on the SNES back in the 90s. I hope it sold well and they'll remake 3 as well, and hopefully bring some of this stuff to new entries in the series too.
Great list man! I'd say Xenoblade definitely has one of the most unique battle systems in a JRPG with its hybrid of real time combat and turn-based elements with special arts.
oh hey I've actually played most of these and for the most part I totally agree. I was very pleased to see Romancing SaGa 2 remake at the beginning and on the list! also Atlus has amazing "game feel" in Persona and Metaphor. it makes turn-based feel SO lively. also not to have recency bias but Unicorn Overlord also had the most addicting gameplay
I don't agree because the Academy becomes quite the slog on consecutive playthroughs. Not nearly enough to do there in terms of activity variety, it's largely just tea and meals.
damn... my man here put together one of the most solid list I've seen in a long time, regarding Jrpgs. The only one I feel like contesting, and it's only by a little is, Dragon Quest 11. I love that game but the combat is too easy, even with all the draconian stuff. But the rest of the games are all near flawless examples of top Jrpg gameplay.
I just finished sinking 75 hours into Metaphor. It had excellent gameplay. I love the spin it placed on the SMT/persona gameplay formula. It really streamlines the persona confidant aspect and reduces the combat grind through overworld battles. My only criticism would be in the game's fairly mid pacing, but overall it's still very easy to recommend.
great list i agree on persona 5 , metaphore , xeno 3 , dragon quest 11 , here my favorite gamplay jrpg : n1 is STAR OCEAN 4 it has the most technical system in any action rpg out there the best gamplay in the series n2 is VALKERY PROFILE 2 the best way is to play it is on emulator n3 LEGAIA 2 this rpg is very unique it plays like a fighting game on every attack you have to chose direction up down left right and creating combos every input can make a special move or super its very fun to play. n4 GRANDIA 3 N5 XENOBALADE 3 but THE DLC it has better gamplay... n5 FINAL FANTESY 12 N6 BATTEN KAITOS ORIGINS n7 METAPHORE REFANTASIO N8 DRAGON QUEST 11 N9 SHADOW HEARTS 2 N10 SHINMEGAMI TENSEI 5 V
legend of dragoon and shadow heart series also have the best gameplay. it let you engage in the gameplay itself instead just pick your action every your turn in traditional rpg. and almost forgot final fantasy xii, the gambit system is also amazing.
yea FF7 Rebirth is the best FF for me too. gameplay is really good, but sadly back in FF7Remake i cant fully appreciate it because of bit disappoint because they change the story. now need to give it credit where is due. both FF7R have amazing combat and multi layered, further more for FF7 Rebirth, it feels like if KH4 combat mechanic done right, everything in FF7R feels special, every character is special, summon is specials, limitbreak is special, synergy is special, even synergy skill is special too, and every mechanic wont be overshadowed by the other mechanic. and the rest is similiar to other JRPG turn based where every magic and skill have its own purpose. but of course because their mechanic is multilayered, we can even brute force every battle with the right set up. really good mechanic. it even have hidden mech to stall the boss similiar to other combat system who use time based mechanic like grandia, FF X, child of light, Xenosaga, the good part is you can fully stall the boss from first turn until the end of the game, you cant do this on old jrpg game. make the 30minute boss battle end is just under 2-3 minute
btw, KH 3 have tons of form, keyblade moveset, combo from form layer 1, layer 2, layer 3. magic, summon, attraction, combination attack, a lot of things that cant be remember or barely use in the span of the game. but there is no uniqueness in every attack because they just do one single damage, no weakness exploit or things that need to use specific move. thats why learning/mastering new form didnt feels that meaningfull. i mean like, why use "that" if i can do damage with "this" and then start button mashing everything
I would recommend FE Engage rather than FE 3houses because of the game play itself. Obviously Engage's story is devastating, but the simulation part is one of the best from SPRG genre. so I strongly recommend FE engage if you wanna play great simulation game.
Great art style, outdated graphics, even when playing it at native 4K some areas look pretty underwhelming. The likes of persona 3 reload looks so much better
I love Metaphor but it's no secret that the graphics aren't up to standard. It was built on a PS3 engine and it shows; said engine also seems to be impacting performance optimization during development with constant FPS drops. I hope Studio Zero drops it for a more streamlined engine both to speed up development and to reduce problems like this. The art direction on the other hand is still leagues ahead of most of its contemporaries imo. Atlus are the frontrunners of making really cool looking games.
I have a tough time with some of these more action-oriented games. Not Ys--it knows it's action and leans into it. But combat systems where you control one person, switching around, and the game kind of plays itself, I don't know. I tried so hard to get into Arise and couldn't. Really disliked FFVII Remake's combat (but that was comparing it to the original). I'm worried I'll hate the Xenoblade combat too. But it's okay if I do. It's not like there isn't plenty to play. Definitely played and loved all the turn-based stuff on this list (and loved Ys 8 as well).
great list. i loved the art of tales of arise. absolutely stunning. however combat felt very boring to me and i often turned the voices off on maps or grinding. characters were also boring except dohalim. for the gorgeous art alone it is worth to play though. for story and characters i prefer berseria and there are great upscale graphic mods.
P5 Royale is one of the best game i've ever played that i also hated it. its one of the games that makes boss fights boring and uninteresting simply because the bosses got no weaknesses and can't inflict any status ailments. there is no buff debuff stacking too (only prolong the duration) where once you get debillitate or cadenza or neo version its basically use and done. you're stuck hitting the boss with your strongest move over and over again. thank god metaphor have great boss fights mechanic.
I think this list misses the JRPG with the best Gamplay ever done, Shing Megami Tensei Vengeance. It is not the best JRPG but it is by far the JRPG with the best Gamplay
You will probably not like what I'll say and I wanted to take this video serious because most of the picks are great but you literally wasted a slot on #6, why? It's the most bogstandard JRPG gameplay/combat that even fans agree is comfort food that has barely changed since the 80s-90s versions of the game. It is barebones JRPG combat bread and butter. Also #5 and #2 should absolutely be swapped, #5 combines everything great Atlus into probably their nicest gameplay systems TO DATE. And if anything #2 should be SMT5: Vengeance, that game is like 90% combat and exploration yet I found the combat to be so much more fun than the Persona series.
Strong list. I played 7 rebirth and then Metaphor. I feel like the two games does similar things where every character can use any skill, and two characters can combo. Bu the way it is done in Rebirth is just way better, and easier to experiment with,.
i had diffrerent take on tales of arise, while the party member gameplay feels unique i dont like how they handle boss battle. all bosses got freaking super armor, its ruin the game for me. tales of arise is the only tales of game i didnt finish. for best gameplay tales of i choose tales of graces/berseria/vesperia hell even the older tales of destiny ps2 got better gameplay than tales of arise, easily the worst tales of on my list i like to add some jrpg with great gameplay from my perspective valkyrie profile lenneth and silmeria, my top 5 best jrpg of all time. lightning returns got alot deep than it looks, you could create cool combos if you know what you are doing. the all time stinky the last remnant could be fun with some modding great game with great soundtrack but the br system is soo complicated
Terrible lists. Tales of arise is easily the worst tales of game of all time. Rebirth was shitty Remake why tf did costs del sol take 4 hours of mini games to get a bikini and progress? Wtf was Gongaga? Joke game. Persona 5 was mediocre at best. Xenoblade chronicles 3 was the only good take here and easily sweeps your list solo
Sorry to say it, but Three Houses is mid gameplay wise compared to other FE games. And the monestary keeps you from playing battles, which are the most fun you will have in that game. Story is decent, but it takes too much time from game I actualy want to play. Same issue, but in lesser extend, I have with Engage, but that games hub was much more bearable. Story as much as people complain about it, was serviceable and didn't ruin the game for me, but simplified combat of TH kinda did. And all the reused maps.
@@karmenion I feel the complete opposite. To this day I haven't been able to finish engage because of the story and characters being so annoying. I really liked the mix of getting to know characters leading to the combat and job switching in three houses. The one thing I do miss about the series though is the relationship and off spring system of fate

Some people play a game for the story and some are just looking to shut off the mind and have fun. It is personal preference at the end of the day, but I think Nintendo has proven over the past few years that making fun games is more sustainable than huge story narratives.

Fire Emblem Three Houses has hands down the best gameplay I have ever seen in a JRPG. What an absolute masterpiece!

getting to know the characters was the reason I enjoyed 3H so much, so no I would not say battles are the most fun part of the game imo

I don't necessarily agree but I think great gameplay can save a bad story in a way a great story can't save bad gameplay
If I want a great story, I'll watch a movie. If gameplay is bad, I just can't get into a game no matter how good the story is
