Metaphor is my JRPG of the year, not just because of the amazing storytelling and world-building, but also makes me wonder how a sci-fi mecha Metaphor would go down.
@ZephyrK. well first monster hunt hunt, I killed the dog. But an elite bird out there and worms. So grinded for gold and to max all unlocked jobs. Was lvl 42 by 2nd main city Then 58. 76, 92, finaly 99 all unlocked with m att. Prob is overworld encourages mage, and kinda promotes you grind d to lvl jobs to 20. Thus you out lvl all. And mage 1 mp return. If I fight a trash mob. Most will use 4x mp vs just mage overworld kill, or merchant. Then again I out lvl all bosses as well. The game would been better if it was isotonic like Oninaki, and 1 mp all 2mp mage. Even the dragons died in 3 rounds.

Definitely a few I gotta get to: Metaphor, SMT V Vengeance, Persona 3 and Octopath 2! I don’t mind if something is long if it’s awesome!!! Great list! Glad to see some of my favs on there like DQ11 and Infinite Wealth!

yup yup gotta agree with everything on this list! I'd throw all the Xenoblade games in there, I spent 100+ hours in all of them (300 in 2... 200 in 3 with the DLC...) and loved it all so much. I will say I only ("only") spent like 70 hours to 100% OTII, as opposed to like 220ish for DQXI, so I don't consider it super long but still highly recommended!
Metaphor is one of the greatest games i have ever played. I’m just blown away by how they managed to take everything good about Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, and combine them into the perfect JRPG.
I love the jRPGs from SEGA. I played and loved: - Persona 5 Royal - Persona 3 Reload - Yakuza: Like a Dragon - Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth And I ordered Metaphor: ReFantazio to play it next week.
Triangle Strategy has to be one of the best long games I've played in the last few years! I was completely immersed in the story + I love games that allow you to make choices that effect the story 👌🏾Chained Echoes is another one that deserves a mention 💗
I love Dragon Quest 11, it's my favorite of the series. I want to try Persona 5 Royal. I loved Octopath traveler 2, it's very re-playable. The Fire Emblem games are my favorite series, going back to my Gameboy Advance, I own own seven games.
I'm about 35-40 hours into Persona 5 Royal but game time is like 90 hours. With the baby now, I have such a bad habit of putting my portal or steamdeck down and it just sits idle :/
My problem with Three Houses, is the monastery sections just become a slog on repeat playthroughs since not enough changes regardless of which route your on. This is especially noticeable in the first half of the game, where the chapters, and monastery sections are 100% identical regardless of route. So the stuff that does change isn't until around the half way mark, about 20-30 hours in

Great list, Metaphor, P3R, P5R, Fire Emblem Three Houses, DQ11, SMTV-V I loved them all. Fire Emblem Engage was also okay but I like Three Houses better
If you love octopath like I love octopath then give bravely default 2 a try. I wasn't sure at first but after completing the game, I can say it's right up there with octopath traveler 2 which we all know is better than octopath traveler 1.
My all time favorite JRPG is Suikoden 2 because the story is real af Instead of being a story about magical beast its just an incredible story about war with a magic system included and it has 1 of the best villain of all time.
I think what Atlus has picked up on, in general, is the idea that there's nothing wrong with being accessible. There are games out there where the devs' attitude is clearly one of "git gud, n00b." Atlus respects my time and my backlog, and I LOVE that. I don't have time to, for example, figure out which magical mystery combination of parts I should install on what bike, before running laps ad nauseum around Monza, trying to shave those last few thousandths of a second off my lap time, in order to get the gold I need to advance (yes, Ride 5, I'm looking really hard at you). Grinding, repetition, and details, strictly for the sake of grinding, repetition, and details, is not content: it's just artificial length. But that's just my 2¢. So, yes, "Safe Modes" do have a place in gaming, especially on long-by-design games. Atlus gets that, God bless 'em. By all means, have Merciless difficulty available for those who really want to sweat the details. But for me, if a game gives me the ultimatum to either work on my skillz, or work on my backlog, backlog wins.
A decent list, pretty modern though. I've played a few of these but most I haven't. Feel that there are quite a lot of older games that are missing from this list: few Tales of games, a few FF games, and even a few Wild Arms that can easily make a list like this. There are so many great JRPGs.
Good video. I see your passion in this. A few pointers from a fellow lover of JRPGs. It’s better to be honest on how much time you spent playing a game instead of saying you played for a very long time. Also there is no musician class in Infinite Wealth.
another banger video. i have tried three houses (being a huge fan of older FE games), but found i couldnt get into it back when it first came out. I would definitely like to try it again soon! Another one i want to get to eventually is infinite wealth! i put about 18hrs into like a dragon, but stopped to go back to replay the series from kiwami 1. i felt like the game, while it can def be played on its own for sure, was throwing a lot of callbacks to the series in general. and i think id get a whole lot more enjoyment meeting certain characters prior to playing Y7 and IW.
Xenogears. First playthrough, without a guide, is super long… crazy when make that it had to be condensed. Would have been a 100 hr JRPG in the 90s! As it was, took me 75 hours first time without a guide
I'm not a JRPG guy, and I'm especially deterred away from the anime-styled JRPGS but Ive played Fire Emblem 3H as it was early in the switch's life cycle and I was trying out most of Nintendo's First Party releases at the time and HOLY SHIT this game caught me off gaurd. Did not expect it to hit as much as it did.
I never played any off the atlus games and i love jrpgs but i got metaphor refantazio for my steamdeck and its making me feel like i need to play their other games in the future game of the year no doubt
@denko1240 I wasn't comparing them in any way other than time spent to complete the game. I'm well aware the differences in story telling, gameplay, and other factors. The only relevant factor for what I said is the fact that they're both games that take time to play.
Haven't played all of these but I have played most of them. I mostly agree, but... only mostly. Persona 5 Royal is legitimately one of my favorite games, 2nd only to Chrono Trigger and even then... not by much. It's literally impossible to do everything in one playthrough. It insists on a 2nd one as some things are only unlocked in NG+. Doing a true 100% probably takes 3 full playthroughs but it is so worth it. DG11 is the best in the entire series. It's difficult without being unfair. The fact that some elements are locked behind being 2D while others require being in the 3D world makes the game so much deeper than people realize. SMT5V is great, and for people who want that sort of "git gud" level of difficulty in a JRPG, this game is perfect for them. Godborne Mode makes any Merciless run in Persona games feel like a breezy jaunt by comparison. The latest Like A Dragon games are bonkers but in the best way. It's like if someone played Dragon Quest while on drugs and said, "Why isn't there a game like this?", and it WORKS. Octopath is the one game where I'm going to really disagree. Story is kind of bland and the gameplay really just comes down to "grind to get bigger numbers" up until the very end, when it becomes brutally unfair for the sake of "difficulty". Sorry, but when a game has to break its own rules to be a challenge, that's unfun to me. I put it down and I won't be picking it back up. FF7 is great. Remake & Rebirth are both very solid games. I just can't wait for them to get through the entire series and have it all packed into a single game. It'll happen... eventually. I'm so glad Fire Emblem is getting love in the West. It took a VERY long time but now people are seeing how great it is. Some of those old FE games are a bitch though.
No DQ7? i'm still playing that game, since last november, I already put over 100+ plus hours and i'm 3 quarters of the way there! And FF12, ive over 180hrs plus and i'm still looking for unique monsters
1. Legend of Heroes series (all of it) 2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 3. Final Fantasy 9 - best final fantasy game for me 4. Fire Emblem: 3 Houses 5. Persona 5 (original) 6. Final Fantasy 7 5. Nier: Automata 6. Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes 7. XC3: Future Redeemed 8. Valkyria Chronicles 9. Final Fantasy 4 10. Triangle Strategy This is MY list of favorites. You can disagree, that’s completely fine.
So I picked up persona 5 Royal on switch recently and was really worried that it was going to be a bad experience because of the limitations of the switch. I was wrong. Although I would prefer to see it a little brighter in some of the darker dungeons.. other than that, The gameplay was smooth and I was very impressed with how well it performed.
Please please please play 1 and 2 before 3 not only because of its major connections but also because you NEED to know the entire Klaus story for 3s expansion to make sense
Metaphor Refantasio....would of love for you to put the name of the game in your shortcut links instead of "Fantasy " since I might of skipped it. Aside from that good video.
There is pretty much almost any jrpg is long. Would been amazing to see short and good ones, what takes like 8-25hrs. Nothing obvious doesn't come to the mind
I love Dragon Quest 8 more than 11. Story wise, they are just as incredible. BUT DQ 11 made the game easier than traditional DQ. I was always happy to find new towns in 8 to find new wares and search all over the map. Making powerful items from the alchemy pot. It made exploration important because every advantage you can get matters in DQ 8. In 11, I don’t think i died in the whole game. (Probably died a few times but can’t remember) Didn’t care searching towns and all over to find new gear and weapons because it didn’t matter, the game was easy.
same. i got to skyrunner dungeon and was like, theres way too much to do and little time so i just put it down and never went back. im bad at decision making and time management. need to get back into it eventually
Which game of this list would you recommend to a Christian?? I tried SmtV, but it’s definitely not my cup of tea. I already have persona 5 royal though
@@Dwight1295 that's a very interesting question. I think in all of them you will witness some form of perversion. I would suspect that dragon quest xi it is very pure overall aside from 1-2 characters you run across
I recently just best persona 5 royal. Did the 3rd semester and everything, and when i beat the game......i was well over 200 hours. Like, what the f*ck was I doing in that game? 🤷🏾♂️🤯 Started new game plus right after i beat it and now I'm literally at the hoky grail for the kast battle.....already over 300 hrs. I love this game haha.
I thought Yakuza 0 was amazing. I beat Kiwami but it wasn’t nearly as good. I tried Kiwami 2 and never finished it. I tried like a dragon and I found the combat ridiculously tedious and boring. Loved persona 3,4,5, dragon quest 11, and currently loving metaphor. I feel like I SHOULD love like a dragon but I couldn’t get into the first game. Do you think i still may like infinite wealth? I partially want to get it but im nervous I’ll get bored of it quickly again.
The first Like a Dragon has a bit of a slow start and Infinite Wealth ramps up combat wise quicker. It also has some mechanics with positioning that make it feel more action focused. It definitely is more Like a Dragon but if you felt like you should like it then Infinite Wealth could click for you.
Xenoblade series i couldn't get into cuz of the auto-attack gimmick it has. Shin Series i never played because im more of a Persona player, and Fire Emblem i never liked Tactical RPGs! The rest of em, i definitely enjoyed playing, but the only game i finished was Infinite Wealth! That game had me hooked! The others i barely did 20% of it yet. 😂
I’m so torn on getting rebirth. It’s not the story I’m worried about. It’s the bloat and padding and time wasting that’s been a big criticism for many reviewers. I’ve never been a main quest only gamer but not feeling like a game respects my time or when in game activities become chores more than meaningful things to do has really impacted gaming for me. Especially as a gamer dad. I’ve tried a few demos of some other games but many games are also slow starters
Get it, it’s the only game that deserves to be on this list, there’s so much side quest and games that make it non-repetitive, changing the pace of flow for every chapter, the only downside is, if you want to truly understand the games lore you have to play ff7 crisis core-ff7 remake- ff7 rebirth, all in that order
I love fire emblem and I beat three houses and enjoyed it but I think the company is going in a wrong direction with the fire emblem series including three houses.
Metaphor is my JRPG of the year, not just because of the amazing storytelling and world-building, but also makes me wonder how a sci-fi mecha Metaphor would go down.

Hey, yep great list, now I just need the time to play those games lol
Thank you!!
I would change Fire Emblem with Unicorn Overlord. Great recommendations regardless
The only reason I buy future Switch 2 is if Xenoblade Chronicles 4 or other related story release
No DQ7? i'm still playing that game, since last november, I already put over 100+ plus hours and i'm 3 quarters of the way there! And FF12, ive over 180hrs plus and i'm still looking for unique monsters
1. Legend of Heroes series (all of it)
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
3. Final Fantasy 9 - best final fantasy game for me
4. Fire Emblem: 3 Houses
5. Persona 5 (original)
6. Final Fantasy 7
5. Nier: Automata
6. Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes
7. XC3: Future Redeemed
8. Valkyria Chronicles
9. Final Fantasy 4
10. Triangle Strategy
This is MY list of favorites. You can disagree, that’s completely fine.
Octopath 2 is so goated. Unreal gameplay, soundtrack and stories.
yea persona 5 is 100 hours long only problem is that 80 of those hours are dialogue and cut scenes same with metaphor.
I agree with all of these picks!
Nier automata??!!?!! Best game ever imo
Mentioning Fire Emblem gets a like from me 👍🏾
Please please please play 1 and 2 before 3 not only because of its major connections but also because you NEED to know the entire Klaus story for 3s expansion to make sense
Metaphor Refantasio....would of love for you to put the name of the game in your shortcut links instead of "Fantasy " since I might of skipped it. Aside from that good video.
Not out yet, but Xenoblade Chronicles X definitive edition coming march 20th SHOULD be SSS tier. The original on the Wii U was fantastic.
I already love Metaphor more than Persona.
When I do greatest games to me of all time I had to not say Lufia 2, SH2, and Dq11 because they always top. Metaphor is top just absolutely amazing.
I can proudly say I beat Lufia 2 including its "hardest puzzle in the world"
Since you've included a CRPG (Three Houses) then I might as well recommend Triangle Strategy and Tactics Ogre. You could play these for months.
Great list but i 100% all of those already. I guess i need to keep looking for new ones.
Sword of Vermillion. That’s what’s up meow Sega Genesis! 😂
I took 109 hours to beat Trails SC. Its awesome!
Cant wait for like a dragon to be on sale
Great list! YS series is great too, you should try it
There is pretty much almost any jrpg is long. Would been amazing to see short and good ones, what takes like 8-25hrs. Nothing obvious doesn't come to the mind
@@Jolerty727 I linked my video for short JRPGs at the end. Check it out for some recommendations.
What... what is the game that started being shown halfway through the Three Houses segment? 😭
My fav is World of Final Fantasy, I really recommend it
I still need to play like a dragon! This is a great list. Gotta show persona the love.
Always!!
Id add if you like Infinite Wealth, try Like a Dragon: Yakuza which is the prequel to Infinite Wealth.
I instantly thought of Final Fantasy IX after I wrote the titel 😄
I love Dragon Quest 8 more than 11. Story wise, they are just as incredible. BUT DQ 11 made the game easier than traditional DQ.
I was always happy to find new towns in 8 to find new wares and search all over the map. Making powerful items from the alchemy pot.
It made exploration important because every advantage you can get matters in DQ 8.
In 11, I don’t think i died in the whole game. (Probably died a few times but can’t remember)
Didn’t care searching towns and all over to find new gear and weapons because it didn’t matter, the game was easy.
ReFantazio is so strange, i tried so much to like it, i loved P5 royal ... but this game just bores the hell out of me
Atlus was cooking in this list
try romancing saga2 bro, you'll not regret!
For anyone wanting to play ff7 rebirth, if you want to play it I’d suggest playing ff7 crisis core first then ff7 remake
I dumped 40 hours into Re:fantazio but then got burned out... I need to go pick it back up.
same. i got to skyrunner dungeon and was like, theres way too much to do and little time so i just put it down and never went back. im bad at decision making and time management. need to get back into it eventually
Which game of this list would you recommend to a Christian??
I tried SmtV, but it’s definitely not my cup of tea. I already have persona 5 royal though
@@Dwight1295 that's a very interesting question.
I think in all of them you will witness some form of perversion.
I would suspect that dragon quest xi it is very pure overall aside from 1-2 characters you run across
dont watch this if you have kids. you wont have time to finish even one
I keep telling myself I have no more time for games and somehow, ive playes all of these games except 2 which are on the top of my list 😅
What about Final Fantasy 16?
Persona 5 royal had that issues that if you want the full ensing ypu might have to play it twice if you do a blind play through.
three houses is one of the bestttt jrpggggsss
I really tried to get into octopath but man. I don’t enjoy the art style that much tbh.
I love this game haha.
just beat metaphor today 18 days.
I recommend checking out Persona 4 Golden
Elden Ring and Dragon's Dogma are JRPGs, just pointing that out.
Octopath traveler is a grindring nitghtmare
Never agreed with a list so much
I thought Yakuza 0 was amazing.
@ Thank you very much for the response!
fire emblem is my fav sadly its only playable on console
I have like 500+ hours in xenoblade 2 lol
If only they would release a new version for PS5. Sadly daily make jrpgs for the laggy switch.
@@DaveTheeMan-wj2nkI wanna finish the game but also gave up because not only laggy but also the poor resolution bothers me a lot even in dock mode.
So in summary: Atlus.
Metaphor would of got my game of the year. But Infinite Wealth beat it. One of my best games of all time. My man got cancer and all...
I love fire emblem and I beat three houses and enjoyed it but I think the company is going in a wrong direction with the fire emblem series including three houses.
