Penny Blood is absolutely not coming out in 2025. They don't even have a publisher and haven't even been working on the game because there is a lawsuit about them never getting the money from the Kickstarter campaign as well. It's unfortunately looking more likely that the game never sees the light of day, but if it does, it's at least another 2-3 years from now before it'd have any possibility of release. Instead we got that rogue-lite Penny Blood: Hellhound to try to build some love for the IP in hopes it helps add value for any potential publisher.
You're always the best place to go to get my RPG/JRPG fix. I'd have never found out about half of these games if it wasn't for your recommendations! We are eating good this year, thanks for these great recommendations Alex! I never played or heard of the original Freedom Wars but the remaster looks like a lot of fun, and it comes out tomorrow. Definitely giving that a try.
Thanks for the video Alex! I haven't been able to finish too many of the games that I want to play and were released these past few years, so I might try to cut down how many games I get. That said, it's still fun seeing what comes out! Plus I will still grab a few for sure. I really need to get around finishing FF Remake so I can play Rebirth on PC soon. Expedition is the one most promising imo.
2025 is also going to be amazing. I love the retro games in the mix. It's convenient to only need modern hardware for all your gaming needs. At the moment, I'm hyped for Tales of Graces F Remastered. Back in 2012, I spent my time enjoying Xenoblade Chronicles. Now is a good time to finally play Tales of Graces F.
I am hyped to actually dive into the Legend of Heroes games with the remake of Trails in the Sky. Hope they remake or remaster all of the games that aren't available on modern consoles so that I can go properly in order.
An incredible time to start your journey through this absolutely amazing series. I'm sure they will remake the other 2 as well. Im definitely not holding back the money on supporting these remakes.
@@MiamiSunrise They did a remaster of the Crossbell games, but I would not mind if a remake of those games are done too. Then the whole excuse of "primitive graphics" will be put to silence, and there is no reason to not play all the games in the series. Not that I expect it will happen, but you never know... The only thing that makes me a bit concerned, is that the people that made great PC ports of Falcom games in the past (PH3/Durante) are not involved. I hope that this port is a bit decent and up to Durante levels.
I'm just hoping the remake doesn't streamline the dialog too much. There's a lot to take in the og Sky FC. A lot of reading, but a lot of it is world building.
I can't believe Lost Soul Aside is STILL in development after all this time! I remember getting excited for it when it was first announced and getting increasingly jaded over its supposed release year after year. I am not holding my breath for a 2025 release, but I'd love to be proven wrong because it just looks so fun to play, here's hoping I guess.
I would love to ask the creators of Atelier why they decided to do a more normal adventure after putting out Resleriana on mobile. Maybe it was the mobile game's performance or maybe fans said "hey, we dont want a mobile title, we want a fun Atelier game that we love". In the KoeiTecmo survey I said that I am not supporting mobile Atelier games but will buy full games day 1 physically (likely in Limited Edition form). I have to wonder how many others stated that to them too. We have seen a ton of announcements just in the last few months, by the end of this year this is gonna be a brutal year to keep up with all of these bangers. Every one of these games looks amazing to me and I will be supporting as many as I can, especially in physical or Limited Edition form! Thanks Alex, this was a fun video!
I've always had the opportunity to try and interview them, but they always fall through for some reason! But that's a great question that I'll try to commit to memory!
Hoping to see the rest of the suikoden franchise get announced as well as 3 has been my favorite jrpg for ages. Tales of graces f is definitely another im excited for
Well, now you got 2 chances to play wilds: first two full weekends of February, we got a 2nd beta. I just pre-ordered all the games I could that I'm looking forward to. I took a hiatus from fighting games, but after SF6 and MK1 I am super excited for City of The Wolves. Especially since it has an rpg mode.
Omg I cannot WAIT to play Penny Blood. I hope it does come out in that window. I agree Clair is my most hyped game of the year and Sky is my most hyped trails in the sky as a remake. I am one of those people that doesn’t play PC games (I played this on steam because I didn’t have a choice, but didn’t want to and I held out for a looong time) Two DIFFERENT Atelier games is just so freaking amazing!
1st 😅 Atelier Yumia looks fantastic so far. Still need to play Ryza 3 and Sophie 2, both sitting on the backlog shelf 😉 but I'm really excited for the new protagonist and world.
I still have to finish Ryza 3 (I first played Blue Reflection Second Light from the same game developer), but have a fun time with it. Atelier Sophie 2 is one of the very best (if not the best) Atelier games if you love turn based combat. You will have a great time if you love the Atelier series. I am absolutely positively looking forward to Atelier Yumia, and will play it the moment it gets released on the PC. I have a bit mixed feeling about Atelier Resleriana because of that garbage gacha monetization system in the original game (I refuse to play that pile of junk by the way). So - I can only hope they scrubbed the "new" Atelier Resleriana clean, and removed all the garbage remains of that "old" game. I am a bit optimistic about it, but am still in a "wait and see" stage now.
Already another insane year ahead for JRPGs, finding the time for all of these feels impossible, but I'll do my best 🤣 Xenoblade X is the one I'm looking forward to the most though!
I’m waiting for hundred line defense academy and expedition 33, this games are my most anticipated for this year. I’m also interested in Rune factory, never played a game from the series, this maybe be my first game.
Well - I played Rune Factory 3, 4 and the latest - 5. I was not overly impressed by those games (although I liked 5 a bit more), but still have some interest in the upcoming game, because it seems they have gone in a different direction. I will wait until reviewers and other people got their hands on the game and show some game play (I never look at the "scores", because I decide for myself if the game is worth it by looking at the game play from several channels).
Can't wait until next Friday to play Dynasty Warriors: Origins. As a fan of series since the PS2 days I feel like it has really dropped off recently, and I thought DW9 was the end of the series. Playing the demo for DW:O I am so hyped to see this new take on the franchise.
I thought they might kill the series off after 9 too. The 9th game was horrible in comparison to others and it looks like they corrected a lot of the problems they created for themselves. Looks very fun!
I am excited for some remakes/remasters I never got a chance to play. Suikoden, XCX and Lunar are among the JRPGs I would like to experience. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is title that I will pick up day 1!
Already pre-ordered Tales of Graces F remastered, I love the tails series but I missed the PS3 games. I'm getting it on switch! (I hope they port/remaster Tales of the Abyss)
My bank account looks like someone took a machete to it already with all these games coming out. You're right, its gonna be hard to keep up with all of this awesomeness
@MiamiSunrise i cant bring myself to preorder a game anymore. I got burned bad with hogwarts legacy. Although it has been difficult not preordering Tales of Graces F.
Xenoblade X is by far the game I'm looking forward to the most. It was my all-time favourite Wii U game, and still one of the best open-world games out there. Nothing quite beats exploring a densely-packed Planet Mira in a giant mech, getting lost in the weaving side-stories and charting the land bit by bit, with a revamped version of Xenoblade 1's combat to boot. It also has my favourite character-creator out of any game, allowing me to create the coolest sci-fi hero I could imagine, and even customise his clothes separately from his gear! So if I didn't like how one useful armour set looked, it didn't matter, because I could deck him out in whatever looked good without losing all those benefits! I'm disappointed Nintendo still aren't addressing the problems with the original's western release, but in spite of that, I can't wait to dive right back into Planet Mira with my fellow B.L.A.D.E.s, now with extra content, enhanced visuals, and a continued story past the original ending! I'm also hoping for even more co-op features.
I really want the new Dynasty Warriors game to be good. I passed over the last one based on reviews but the new one is looking good! I don't buy many new games the year they release but Like A Dragon and Xenoblade Chronicles X are must-haves for me.
Can't wait for Tales of Graces F, that battle system is immacular, and Dynasty Warriors Origins looks mighty promising as well, playing them back to back gonna be so fun But Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii might just be my Game of the year with how insanely fun it looks Clair Obscur looks beautiful, it might be a sleeper hit for me I can't believe how good Trails in the Sky looks, Falcom actually made a modern looking game, this company has come so far Been waiting forever for Lost Soul Aside, really hoping the gameplay lives up to the hype The new Rune Factory looks very cool, bringing back action gameplay reminds me of the only other game in this series i played on the PS3
as someone who feels extremely similarly about Guardians of Azuma, it has a spring 2025 release date - not just 2025 - so I am pretty hopeful it will be out this year! also this year doesn't look TOO crowded, but I'm expecting an absolute deluge when the Switch 2 officially gets announced.
I still have so many JRPGs from last year that this one will be a little shyer of new releases for me (I hope). The two exceptions I plan to get at release are: Monster Hunter Wilds and Atelier Yumia.
YES. I’ve got my set up on PlayStation. I could play games on my pc, but I have my little gaming throne. I’ve wanted to play trails FC - I even bought it and played it a bit on pc (and adored Estelle) but I just don’t do pc gaming
I use my PC for work and artistic endeavors. I worry that playing games on it (or even having them there) would be detrimental to my concentration. It's why I also watch TH-cam on my phone and not my PC.
Right Now: Phantom Brave: Lost Hero Other Games: Edens Zero, Fate/Extra, Armed Fantasia Tales of Grace F, Atelier Yumia, Trails Through Daybreak 2, Trails in the Sky,Hundred Line Last Defense Academy, Rune Factory: Guardian of Azuma, Atelier Resleriana, Thread of Time, Freedom Wars, Penny Blood, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Just looking at the new rune factory, I'm pretty sure this will release on the next switch. I mean yeah, it's a trailer. But I really doubt the first switch could handle that and look so good. Especially considering the last rune factory.
Sadly, Penny blood would probably never come out. I hope I'm wrong though. I backed the kick starter as a huge fan of the Shadow hearts series, in fact, Shadow hearts 2 is my favourite JRPG. I really, really want to see this game release one day.
Games that I would play instantly if I could : The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II (I'm finishing CS 4 right now so it will have to wait a bit) Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (this one I'll try my best to play day one) Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition (I have Xeno 3 on my backlog, so I'm wondering about playing X first then 3) Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (I haven't played the Sky arc yet and I think I'd like to play the first 3 as they are right now before tackling the remake to be able to see the changes. And also I'd rather play the 3 games in one go rather than having to wait a couple of years at best for the remakes of 2 and 3) Games that I'm curious about : Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana (I loved Ys 8 but I'm afraid Felghana won't be my cup of tea as I really enjoyed the story aspect and the various playable characters) Tales of Graces f Remastered (To my shame I own it on PS3 and have yet to play it, I think I'll play my copy before getting the remaster unless it's better in every way) Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land (never played an Atelier before, it seems like a good time to jump in) The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (depending on how I much I enjoy Master Detective Raincode which I hope to play this year) Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (not sure about this one but it's a Gamepass day one, so I'll check it out there to see if it's a buy for me or not) Pokemon Legends Z-A (I only played one "classic" Pokémon game so this new format intrigues me but I have not played Arceus, so why not try this one. However, consider the technical issues of Arceus and Scarlet/Violet, I'll probably wait for the Switch 2)
12:18 On the one hand you can say whatever you want how to recognize that it is a western game with JRPG influences, about this game and I might agree with you in part or in whole. But on the other hand, I'm sorry but JRPG is JRPG, and that include Wuthering Waves 🇨🇳, After Love EP 🇮🇩, Unbeatable 🇨🇦 and Lost Sound Aside 🇨🇳. At least use the general term "RPG" to use a more general and accurate term.
@@BacklogBattleOn the one hand, I know you mentioned "games" as a general term, but on the other hand you also mentioned "JRPGs". So what is the point? Maybe it makes sense from a marketing perspective, but it's questionable in terms of accuracy. Using "JRPGs" in the title can attract a specific audience interested in that subgenre, even if the content includes more general RPGs. However, for those expecting exclusively JRPGs (Someone like me for example), the inconsistent use of the term might be confusing or disappointing (That's how it made me feel). So, if the video covers both JRPGs and RPGs in general, it would be more honest and clear to use a title that reflects this broader scope.
One thing about those "remasters" that is rubbing be the wrong way, is that while the background and game environment gets a graphic overhaul, the play characters themselves are still almost unrecognizable pixelated. Yeah - They say it's the "charm" to see those pixelated blobs in a shiny environment, but come on! Why not give those characters the same graphic overhaul as the environment? I am from the days that everything looked pixelated and I was happy to leave that all behind. And now it's back under the banner of "nostalgia". Well - All I can say I don't feel any "nostalgia" at all, and frankly will probably have a hard time to convince myself to buy those games. It's a shame that those Xenoblade games will never come to the PC. I would love to play them, but not enough to buy a complete console for them. Yeah - I know you can use a emulator, but that has it's limitations too. I rather buy the game as a official PC port. Sorry if I sound a bit grumpy, but I am actually very glad about almost all games that are released in 2025. For me the highlights are Atelier Yumia, Trails Through Daybreak II, and of course the remake of Trails In The Sky. Let's hope that last one gets a decent PC port, because the people that "saved" other Falcom games (PH3/Durante) are not involved in this port. And I have hopes for Atelier Resleriana, although we don't know much about it for now.
This year all japan game is great. The developer said their want to outrank mobile chinese game for this year. Hope they still continue improvement for their game. And you forgot bleach rebirth soul also come in 21 march
A. It's amazing that we get to play so many games like this in 2024. The JRPG genre was near death during 7th gen, and now it's prospering with dozens of fun, good-to-high-quality releases every year. Many of us JRPG fans feel blessed in this regard. B. Alex has played enough JRPGs recently to know from pre-release material that many of these games will live up to our expectations for them. It's impossible to know which of these 27 games will end up being 9/10 bangers, but several of them will, and many others will be 8/10 great games, others more modest fun. It's just great to have the choice and variety!
Well - To be honest. I don't play the Atelier games because they are game changing, but because of the relaxed atmosphere that's in those games. I also like the Alchemy system. That is the very reason I own almost every Atelier game that is released on the PC. That said - I do not mind if Atelier Yumia goes in a different (maybe darker) direction, although my guess is that the don't stray too far from the original concept, because they want to keep the original player base "on board" while attracting new players.

Ooo I don’t think with all their legal troubles Penny Blood will be coming out any time soon unfortunately!
I'm excited that Phantom Brave got a sequel.
Pirate Yakuza, Trails in the Sky Remake, Legends Z-A, and Fantasy Life 2 are already in my goty list
As someone who has always been into rpg games, this is going to be an expensive year.
People being snapped of existence at a specific age is the major plot line of Michael grants "gone" book series, i highly recommend it..
I'm so curious and torn about the Freedom Wars Remaster. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it when you've played it.
Can't wait for Tales of Graces F, that battle system is immacular, and Dynasty Warriors Origins looks mighty promising as well, playing them back to back gonna be so fun
But Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii might just be my Game of the year with how insanely fun it looks
Clair Obscur looks beautiful, it might be a sleeper hit for me
I can't believe how good Trails in the Sky looks, Falcom actually made a modern looking game, this company has come so far
Been waiting forever for Lost Soul Aside, really hoping the gameplay lives up to the hype
The new Rune Factory looks very cool, bringing back action gameplay reminds me of the only other game in this series i played on the PS3
Alex out here making sure our backlogs grow and our wallets stay empty 😅😊
as someone who feels extremely similarly about Guardians of Azuma, it has a spring 2025 release date - not just 2025 - so I am pretty hopeful it will be out this year!
also this year doesn't look TOO crowded, but I'm expecting an absolute deluge when the Switch 2 officially gets announced.
I still have so many JRPGs from last year that this one will be a little shyer of new releases for me (I hope).
The two exceptions I plan to get at release are: Monster Hunter Wilds and Atelier Yumia.
What's the purpose of the * after JRPGs in the video title?
It's why I also watch TH-cam on my phone and not my PC.
amazing list. JRPG fans eating good in 2025!
Right Now:
Phantom Brave: Lost Hero
Other Games:
Edens Zero, Fate/Extra, Armed Fantasia Tales of Grace F, Atelier Yumia, Trails Through Daybreak 2, Trails in the Sky,Hundred Line Last Defense Academy, Rune Factory: Guardian of Azuma, Atelier Resleriana, Thread of Time, Freedom Wars, Penny Blood, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
i think ff IX remake and ff tactics remake will be announced along at switch2 nintendo reveal; well i hope
expecting for trails remake. Can't wait
Just looking at the new rune factory, I'm pretty sure this will release on the next switch. I mean yeah, it's a trailer. But I really doubt the first switch could handle that and look so good. Especially considering the last rune factory.
2025 is going to be insane! can we possibly play all this in a year? the answer is maybe/probably not but we're damn sure gonna try🤣🤣
Fingers crossed for Clair Obscur and Penny Blood. Nothing else looks that interesting
Who is Recettear HD not coming to console?
Sadly, Penny blood would probably never come out. I hope I'm wrong though. I backed the kick starter as a huge fan of the Shadow hearts series, in fact, Shadow hearts 2 is my favourite JRPG. I really, really want to see this game release one day.
Isnt Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma coming out in March?
Games that I would play instantly if I could :
The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II (I'm finishing CS 4 right now so it will have to wait a bit)
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (this one I'll try my best to play day one)
Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition (I have Xeno 3 on my backlog, so I'm wondering about playing X first then 3)
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (I haven't played the Sky arc yet and I think I'd like to play the first 3 as they are right now before tackling the remake to be able to see the changes. And also I'd rather play the 3 games in one go rather than having to wait a couple of years at best for the remakes of 2 and 3)
Games that I'm curious about :
Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana (I loved Ys 8 but I'm afraid Felghana won't be my cup of tea as I really enjoyed the story aspect and the various playable characters)
Tales of Graces f Remastered (To my shame I own it on PS3 and have yet to play it, I think I'll play my copy before getting the remaster unless it's better in every way)
Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land (never played an Atelier before, it seems like a good time to jump in)
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy (depending on how I much I enjoy Master Detective Raincode which I hope to play this year)
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (not sure about this one but it's a Gamepass day one, so I'll check it out there to see if it's a buy for me or not)
Pokemon Legends Z-A (I only played one "classic" Pokémon game so this new format intrigues me but I have not played Arceus, so why not try this one. However, consider the technical issues of Arceus and Scarlet/Violet, I'll probably wait for the Switch 2)
I doubt Penny Blood is coming out this year. We have seen nothing but the Kickstarter reveal years ago
Atelier Yumia !!! just look at that
13 sentinels mention !!
I don't have enough time to play all of these Dx
LUNAR confirmed 18 April 2025
It is! I updated the chapter markers to confirm it!
Ugh can we get xenosaga back?? Also nah we still got hold outs for wii cuz we don’t have fire emblem path of radiance or radiant dawn yet lol
This comment tells me that you didn't even watch the intro or even read the description of this video
Silence, bank account. A JRPG release video is talking.
After I finish defending my thesis and land a job...I start tackling the 2023 games...smh
Fate/Extra Record!!!
Well there goes my extra money 🤣
How do you know they are amazing if they haven't come out yet? 😀
Hope Atelier Yumia is worth the wait, their older titles have been good be not enough to change gaming
Here for the Yumia clickbait
Too many games!!! My wallet!!! NOoooooo
